Fixing the Reverse Lights in a 1966 Mustang

  • This project was simple once I figured out what I needed to do. My car has a Super T10 Sideloader 4 speed, which is not the original transmission. Thankfully I did not need to remove the carpet to route the wires to the transmission for the reverse switch. In the end, all I needed was the reverse light switch, a new fuse, and two new bulbs! It was great to get these lights to work considering all the loose ends I had to chase down.
    Hurst Backup light switch: # 2480003
    Reverse light bulbs: # 1142 (2 bulbs)
    The car is a 1966 Mustang Coupe with a factory V8 and 4 speed transmission.

    Really good job Andy, I like the way you figured out everything to work with the T5 transmission. About the shrink tubing, when you are forced to go to a size that is way too big, I think it makes sense to wrap electrical tape over the wire first and then place the shrink tubing over the electrical tape. Works for me.
    Thanks Andy

      That electrical tape idea is pretty good, I may use that. :)

    Andy, great job. I often refer to your channel to navigate repairs/improvements to my 1966 "stang." Bravo.

    Andy, that bolt and hole that you mounted your reverse light is going to need some further work by you. The purpose of the hole and bolt on the shifter is to limit the travel of 2d and 4th and 1st and 3d. The bolt comes with a jam nut to hold it in place once it's finally adjusted. You loosen the jam nut and loosen the bolt until there's just a few threads holding it in place. The pull the shifter in gear and hold it in place while tightening the bolt until you feel it make contact (this is a two person job...one person working the shifter and the other underneath working the bolt). I usually then back the bolt out one turn and tighten the jam nut to hold it in place. There are two bolts - one in front and one in back of the shifter housing. For the reverse switch, place the bracket between the jam nut and the shifter and tighten it once you get the bolt to the proper length. Just Google Hurst stop bolt adjustment. Confused yet? :)

      It would have been great if the previous owner had put that bolt in place, it wasn't there when I started. When I was trying to figure out what bolt I needed and how deep it could go, I tell that if it threaded in too far then it would hit the linkage, so I made sure to use a short bolt. Granted, this is not ideal, nor is it the correct way to do it, but it worked and I am still able to shift into each gear without any interference.
      However, this reverse light switch won't be a problem soon, I've got a super secret mod coming up. :)

    Nice Job. Answers a few questions on my 66. On all my bulb exchanges I have converted to LED. A lot brighter and less amperage running thru old wiring harness. Even though I think I changed out most of the harness. You are my go to guy for all things on my 66!

    Thank you for this, My 66 also does NOT have reverse lights... I have an auto but same concept.

    • @AndyKruseChannel
      @AndyKruseChannel  3 года назад

      No problem! While you will likely have a different kind of switch to activate the lights, the wire color should be the same and it should help you track down where they are in the car so it can be hooked up. :)

    It wouldn't hurt to put grommets on those two wires for the lights where they go through the sheetmetal, or braided sleeving. Good video.

    That fuse is 5.7 short barrel fuse not a 14 it is also for the courtesy lights

    I had hard time removing those bulbs.
    My reverse light only work when they want, I think is the neutral safety switch that controls that in auto cars

      Dude, getting those bulbs out was dumb, it shouldn't be that hard. :)
      My previous '66 was an auto, but I don't recall how the reverse lights were triggered. In fact, I couldn't tell you for sure if they even worked.

      @@AndyKruseChannel I swapped them with LEDs from Amazon but I broke install it because it requires so much force.

    Hi, I have a 1968 mustang and the reverse lights don’t work. I have the hurst shifter and I believe I have the same transmission (4 speed) I purchased the reverse switch and I need to install it. But.. when I look underneath there is the old reverse switch but no wires are connected to it, and I don’t see them.
    Do you know if those wires come from the engine bay or from under the carpet?

    • @AndyKruseChannel
      @AndyKruseChannel  Год назад +1

      The wiring will come out of the rats nest behind the instrument cluster, run down the inside of the firewall, and under the carpet where it pokes through the transmission tunnel and out to the transmission.

    Awesome video! This helped a lot, my question is how does it wire to the fuse box on the inside of the car? I seem to be hitting roadblock

    • @AndyKruseChannel
      @AndyKruseChannel  3 года назад

      The fuse at the top of the fuse box is where it attaches. If you were looking at the fuse box, the right-hand wire at that specific fuse should go all the way back to the reverse lights.

    Very thprough. Thank you. Question: How did you know that you needed a 14A fuse?

    • @AndyKruseChannel

      The fuse size is engraved onto the fuse block, just below where the fuse plugs in. You can see it really well at the 5:50 mark. :)

      Thanks!!
      I started researching how the back-up lights work on the manual cars and I knew I had Hurst shifter mechanism and I was hoping they offered a solution. Thankfully they did, it made it easier to just buy the correct bracket and switch. I could have made something myself, but I figured I wasn't the first person to have this issue, so I wasn't surprised when there was a simple solution. :)
