Cracked glass varies in consequence. The timeline of a crack spreading, the risk of it shattering and whether the glass will need full replacement is different for every situation.
Types of glass cracks:
• Impact crack: An impact crack caused by a flying rock, a high-speed ball or other object is characterized by a center point of impact with lines extending around the circumference. Kind of like a spider web.
• Stress crack: A stress crack starts smaller, near the edge of the window, and then spreads slowly across the glass. This type of crack could be caused by an extreme fluctuation in temperature, kind of like ice cubes cracking when placed in a room-temperature drink. They can also be caused by door windows being slammed. These are less common, and are more likely seen in insulated glass or double pane windows, caused by drastic temperature changes or when windows are installed at an incorrect elevation level. Usually the crack is in the shape of a curve and it will typically need a full window replacement.
