My personal head cannon is that it’s both the Horus heresy and the poor fire hawks as the restless souls eventually burn out and occasionally a space marine through the millennia will join the legion of the damned and the fire hawks were simply a larger batch. but some souls survive longer than others which is why I hope to see a Ferrus manus in the 42 millennium Edit: I am bad with words so I fixed what I was saying

I don’t exclude the possibility that the former Fire Hawks are among the ranks of the Legion of the Damned, but I do not accept the exclusion of the betrayed dead of Istvaan V and Ferrus Manus.

I always thought the Firehawks became part of the Legion but didn't create the Legion itself, all the coffins proved is the chapter was lost in the warp. Master of Mankind has a legion of the damned being led by (presumably) the spirit of Ferrus Manus saving the fight in the webway after Big E stabbed the air with his sword and ripped open a portal. IMO their souls are in Big E's part of the warp as he owns their souls (similar to Slaanesh and the Eldar souls) and they are his minor demons with the living Saints being his greater demons. The Emperor seems to be the Chaos God of order and during the seige of Terra even discussed 'fixing' the problem of Ferras' death with Malcadore, which (alongside the webway fight) makes it seem like he already owned and could control Ferras' soul, he just needed to craft a new vessel for his soul to inhabit.

The best theory I've heard explaining the Legion of the Damned is that, like how Celestine is essentially a Greater Daemon of the God-Emperor, the Legion of the Damned are his Lesser Daemons. It explains how these guys can just show up out of the blue when the situation is at its worst (just like how Astartes are said to do in stories) and seemingly do this all over the god damn galaxy at almost the same time. I was always under the impression that the Legion of the Damned were basically Imperial demons/warp entities like Saint Celestine and the reason that they show up right when the situation is most desperate to save the day is because the prayers to the emperor are the most numerous when the battle is about to be lost. The mass simultaneous chorus of prayers to Big E allows them to manifest similar to how a chaos ritual can summon demons. The Legion then disappears when the tide of battle turns toward victory for the Imperium because the mass prayers for salvation have stopped; cutting off the mass psychic tether allowing them to enter into our dimension. I thought the Legion of the Damned was originally summoned by the Emperor in the War of the Webway as a manifestation of those slain at Istvaan and eventually evolved to contain the vengeful/unfinished souls of all loyalists Astartes who died without completing a purpose; also their led by Ferrus Manus' spirit. PS DK don't forget that Subcommander Torchstar is a fire caste Tau so she is more muscular than the other types.
odd theory; as well as odd timing. just before watching this, watched a vid by Majorkill; during the Emperor's webway battle, Big E summoned the dead loyalists who died at Istvan to aid the Custodes. they appeared wreathed in flames [armors charred by the nukes], led by the spirit of Primarch Ferrus Manus. as add-on to this theory; as they are still labeled as a legion, couldn't they have added into their ranks every dead Astartes killed since the Heresy, leading to the irrelevance of an emblem, other than to mark that "they were there."
My head cannon is that the legion of the damned is actually a combination of the two banished legions. Going further, the two banished legions were not actually destroyed because they went against the emperor, that's just the excuse given by the emperor. IMO The emperor actually *sacrificed* them into the warp, primarchs and all, by purpose so that he had access to loyal forces wholly within the warp for future wars.
Apparently the Emperor made them as there is a point in the Horus Heresy where the Emp went into the web way at the end to save the custodes and such he left to die and ripped open a port to a legion of space marines lead by the headless Ferrus Manus. Supposedly these are the drop site massacre casualties. Also I like the Flame Falcons one, they are a chapter of space marines who, while in combat, become engulfed in flames that purge chaos but leaves the Marines perfectly fine. The Inquisitions said they were Heresy and yeah.
If the Legion of the Damned show up, know that whoever they're aiding would have otherwise been clusterfucked straight into the warp. They don't just show up, they only show up preceding extreme and unavoidable catastrophe. Think the height of a giant WAAAAAAGGH with an (allegedly) Krork-like warboss leading the horde. Moments when both the if and when of death are no longer a question, when it is so imminent that a guardsman can count down to their death. THAT is when the Legion of the Damned show up, and whenever they do, they bring with them the fire of brothers betrayed, and put down upon the enemy the infernal hatred of a God Emperor scorned. They are vengeance given form, they are wrath unleashed, for what they could not avenge in life, they will a thousand times over in death. They are the Legion of the Damned, edge as they might be, the last bastion of hope in their despair-drenched souls. Where they walk, seas of blood boil.
They're not the Fire Hawks. The Legion of the Damned fought alongside Vulkan and the Emperor at Eternity Gate and in the Human Webway, long before the Fire Hawks ever existed. They're Daemons loyal to Humanity and the Emperor. I think, given the Astartes are essentially fragments of their Primarchs, and the Primarchs are warp entities turned human and filled with the Emperor's power, that the Legion of the Damned was always the intent of the Emperor, and is what all truly loyal Astartes become when they die.
Also I would love a 40k horror book where chaos cultists are being essentially hunted by the LoD. Like how daemons do the guard. Would love to see the tables turned on them. lol
My personal favorite theory on the Legion of the Damned is that they’re one of the original lost chapters, cursed to serve where they previously had failed. No idea how well that holds up in the face of GW’s amazingly inconsistent writings, but…I like the idea.
Personally I like the idea that the Legion of the Damned are actually dead Astartes whi the emperor has brought back as demons. Especially since then they could be led by a headless ghost Farrus Manus.
The Tau little guy needs to have mini text "Pew Pew" coming from their guns. 42:35 - The Tau, some of the Eldar and a number of worlds who rebelled against the Imperium in the face of the awful and deplorable tithing/working/living conditions and formed their own government (which is probably most of the Imperium Nihilus right now that didn't have a Space Marine chapter nearby, since the Astronomicon's light can't reach them anymore and they are on their own). Frankly it's the perfect setting for a game with the Tau a protagonist. You start in the Nem'yar Atoll and have to invest in the Air Caste to establish actual transport routes out there, Water Caste to win over stranded Imperium Worlds, Earth Caste to build them up and the Fire Caste because "Oh crap the Death Gaurd!"
Personally, I think the idea of the Legion of the Damned as just sufferers of a warp disease to be underwhelming. For one, it means they're doomed to eventually all die, which is lame. Second, it makes them more mundane. We don't need to wonder what they are, because they explained it. At least in this theory. i prefer just treating the Legion of the Damned as straight up warp ghosts. They're space marines that died or were lost during warp travel, but refused to fade away. So they were inducted into the brotherhood of spooky ghost marines, to fight the enemies of mankind eternally. I also like the idea that they can be any space marines, not just from any one chapter. Moreover, I think the idea of the "Warp Ghost" could easily be extended to any faction, not just space marines. Like flame-wreathed Imperial Knights (my "House Goetia" concept I proposed in the comments of a different episode), or zombie/skeleton/ghost Guardsmen. And I don't even have the energy to get into my Star Geist idea. This is a rich vein to mine.
My headcanon is that the legion of the damned are the loyalist elements of the traitor legions that were purged on Istvaan 3 Hense literaly legions of the damned

I have 2 theories. 1st. The Legion of the Damned is one of the Two lost/erased Legions but they are still loyal to the Emperor 2nd. The Legion of the Damned are all gaurdsmen and Astartes that have died and because the Emperor has nearly become a Chaos god himself through Humanity's worship and they are in essence his own forces revived by the Emperor's power in the warp
The thing on Vampires and mirrors/photographs, old mirrors used silver and so did old photography a digital camera would pick up a vampire just fine in theory
You know I think it’d be pretty cool if the legion started as the remnants of the fire hawks but as time went on the souls of any loyalist marine that died fighting chaos had a chance to be taken in by the legion of the damnned
I thought the legion of the damned was led by a giant headless space Marine which may be a hint towards ferris manus the primark of the iron hands and that there was stories of the Damned 900ish years before the fire hawks founding then again that could just be warpy shenanigans
I have always like to think that, along with deceased fiercly loyal space marines, other loyal humans could join the legion of the damned if they were furious and loyal enough. Just imagine: entire regiments of krieger waiting to charge and die other other again, shovels ready. Cadians wanting revenge against the black legionnaires and failbadons. And so much more angry humans waiting in line to get a shot against thèse who wronged them. X)

I love the idea of them being from the death guard and the flame burning away the putrification of nurgle
“Legion of the damned were in 7th edition… I’m old”
Me remembering them for 3rd edition and turning into dust.
DK hates Spyxfamily but loves Rent-A-Girlfriend. That's too impossible, even for my collection.
Would love to see the tables turned on them. lol
AYO....I remember suggesting the Legion of the Dammed in a previous episode, here they are now, the God of Change is on my side today
I been listening to this podcast for so long I finally caved, bought, and painted my first W40k models. They're Necrons.
Really missed a lot of Legion of the Damned lore on this one.
My personal favorite theory on the Legion of the Damned is that they’re one of the original lost chapters, cursed to serve where they previously had failed. No idea how well that holds up in the face of GW’s amazingly inconsistent writings, but…I like the idea.
Normal Space Marines: Purge them in holy fire!!!!
Legion of the Damned: Behold, the power of diesel and Styrofoam
5:10 ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE
Ah, the Shy being done with this shit continues. I'm waiting for her becoming host arc.
Everybody heretical until the Daemons start speaking High Gothic
Legio Damnatorum. Oh I long to see a *certain* Dreadnought in it.
Personally I like the idea that the Legion of the Damned are actually dead Astartes whi the emperor has brought back as demons. Especially since then they could be led by a headless ghost Farrus Manus.
25:00 - ‘Two long cylindrical objects, not big ones’ 🤔 hey now
The Tau little guy needs to have mini text "Pew Pew" coming from their guns.
I'd like to hear more of this Star Geist idea.
My headcanon is that the legion of the damned are the loyalist elements of the traitor legions that were purged on Istvaan 3 Hense literaly legions of the damned
I was expecting Shy to lock the cabin with a chain and then set it ablaze at the end.
Something that doesn't break DK's brain: vigilante outlast Ghost Rider Batman space marine Hot Wheels.
Something that entirely breaks DK's brain: LCD wafers.
Next week: Organic Light-Emitting Diodes!
I have 2 theories.
1st. The Legion of the Damned is one of the Two lost/erased Legions but they are still loyal to the Emperor
2nd. The Legion of the Damned are all gaurdsmen and Astartes that have died and because the Emperor has nearly become a Chaos god himself through Humanity's worship and they are in essence his own forces revived by the Emperor's power in the warp
I think the Legion of the Damned is just drawn by the psychic energy of utterly faithful servants of the emperor willingly fighting a hopeless battle.
The thing on Vampires and mirrors/photographs, old mirrors used silver and so did old photography a digital camera would pick up a vampire just fine in theory
In my head canon Rylanor was so pissed he joined LotD
I would love to see a LotD rylanor and ferrus beating up fulgrim
You know I think it’d be pretty cool if the legion started as the remnants of the fire hawks but as time went on the souls of any loyalist marine that died fighting chaos had a chance to be taken in by the legion of the damnned
DK not liking Spy X Family: Totally fine everyone has their own taste in shows! :D
Also DK says he likes Rent-a Girlfriend: Bruh.
I was gonna say DK kept sounding like he didn't wanna do the dornian heresy lmao so BA episode would be sick
We need a bricky reaction cam whenever DK gets a quote wrong to see the disappointment in his eyes.
All of the Taniths Ghosts, hunting heretiks till the end of time, their thirst for vengance never satiated. Like your idea, going to the headcanon department in my head XD
a singular heresy-era soldier wearing a catholic cross round his neck perhaps?
Imagine if games workshop made an official Warhammer 40K anime. Bricky would shit a himself. His brain would melt.
the editing on these is getting more and more elaborate. I like it.
DK is renting. Stay back BRICKY! HE'S BEGINNIG TO RENT.
DK be like: “I think Coolsville sucks!”
Remember when Jerma executed DK on the Tri-State line?
"the necrons are kinda racist"
"I don't think about Tau because they're blue and stupid"
ive always liked the idea that they are the fallen loyalist of the horus heresy, or the slaughtered of istvan 3
HECK YEAH, THESE ARE MY BOYS!! I've been waiting for your video on these guys.
Dude, so I'm sick today, and I was convinced I was having some kind of drug trip from what I ate when they started talking about spy x family and jerma. Like, that caused maximum confusion
The dornian heresy will be interesting to see as it is one of the most popular fan heresy’s and the fates of each of the legions are very spicy
Bricky is such a fucking meme lord this episode
They used to have Thier own land speeder with a massive rib cage on the front
Metal AF! 🤘
Did I hear a Rock &Stone !!
If ya don't Rock & Stone, ya ain't comin' home!
Did I hear a ROCK AND STONE!?!?
DID I HEAR A "ROCK AND STONE"!?
shy leaving at the end was just perfect.
LCD stands for liquid crystal display. It's a thing, guys.
Edit: Thank you, Shy!
The day has come, Rock and Stone!
Legion of the Damned in a fire bikini. I DEMAND THAT AS THE NEXT POSTER
It wouldn't surprise me if these spirits of vengeance were actually a single multidimensional actor known as Nicholas Cage.
I like playing with them now and then in unification, they weird but a hell of a powerhouse.
33:25 .....my guy we have liquid crystal wafers in real life.... thats what a fucken LCD screens
21:33 THAT'S MY SCREENSHOT!! Holy shit, that's me and some friends dressed as Alpharius in Amogus.
I know it's not really important but this is my favorite 40k podcast, so it's just neat to see a stupid joke we made wind up on there
These endings are getting more elaborate and shipposty i love them even more.
I've always had had a thought in the back of my mind that the legion of the damned are the remainders left after the Nuke was dropped on the Salamanders at the drop site massacre. Then were called into the webway by the emperor afterwards.
I like how Shy added crickets to the end, but it sounds more like an alarm clock because they know their audience.
Thanks for doing this podcast! It's been fun to hear you guys and can't wait to see more episodes!
I feel like the legion of the damned was a joke towards the deus ex machina. Where something comes out of nowhere to save the heroes at the last second, and doesn’t make sense. Yet, this is the coolest implementation of that “problem”.
Also, shouldn’t bricky know that forcing a meme so hard, and bringing it up too many times ruins it?
I didn't think it was possible for DK to lose respect even more until he said he liked Rent-A-Girlfriend.
Rylanor is part of the Legion of the Damned
Ah yes, the fuckin metal-as-hell marines.
The video on the Legion of the Damned starts at 6:12
There were more facts about the legion but Briky decided to talk about spyXfamily
