When I bought my retirement farm one of the many things left behind was a dead rusty freezer which I am unable to get it loaded by myself so I did decide to use it for critter free feed storage after painting the outside. Works great.
As soon as you said that was all going to the trash, I had to come and check the comments. 😅 Also, always dump out, never reach in to a bag.. There could have been a snake hibernating in there. Or a rats nest, or mice nest. Or black widows. One of the things I enjoy most about your channel is that you show "pride of ownership" for your place. You are always working to make things more organized, tidy, etc. You're a good example to new homesteaders who need to learn that lesson.
The chain on the wooden handle is a horse twitch. It's used to calm and restrain them for a short period of time. And yes, those were saddle racks on the wall.
She even acknowledged Jason's admonition that "it" might fall down....then two seconds later (11:38) he makes the "quick, disappearing, clanging metal exit!😂🤣🙃🙂🙃😆🫢👏👏👏👏 Glad you're OK Jason....Safety first!
Hey Jason 👋. That mesh " muzzle" is for when horses were working in the field, so they wouldn't munch on the crops, like if they were using horses to cultivate.
The barn, though old and leaky, is a real treasure. Be thoughtful in your demolitition. Having such great capacity to house larger animals in a protected environment is a definite luxury on the farm. It needs a bit of love, yes, but its value, function and beauty are the things dreams are made of!
I want to say thanks for sharing “the meal” at the end of most shows. LUV seeing what your wife and daughter make for dinner each time. Loraine puts together some amazing dishes. Well done Jason!
You got a lot cleared out. That had to be the nastiest chest freezer I have seen. I wouldn't even keep it for feed storage. No telling what is growing in it, under it, not worth risking what you might store in it. Thanks for sharing. Y'all have a Bessed day.
What a smart idea, to put the pallet in front of that doorway and move the freezer onto it. Then putting the pallet mover under it! You and Loraine did it!! Awesome work!!!
Harbor freight shop lights LED 10,000 Lu I think they are $44.99 Al at Lumnah Acres uses them. They also have 5500 Lu LED lights for around $18.99. FYI
We have that same boom box! My husband still uses it. LOL. I'm glad there wasn't a horse's (or human!) head in that freezer. Good advice for moving it, Lorraine!
The wooden handle with a chain is a twitch. It is used to subdue the horse during procedures, etc. by twisting it around the horses lips. The other items - saddle rack and a small rack for halters/bridles. Great find!
cut yourself some 2-4" pvc pvc electrical conduit 2-3" long, you'll use them the rest of your life to move things. Pianos, freezers, etc. I've used round posts to move heavy sheds
You can scrap the freezer if you don’t want to clean it and use it to store feed in. Recycle center will pay you a couple bucks for any metal you have.
😡Those big things you thought were, “some kinda horse shoes” are called “stacks”. Very cruel and used on Tennessee Walking horses to exaggerate their unique gait.
Im only 5’2” and I was an 18 wheeler truck driver so I have moved stuff. When you can’t push facing the object turn ur self around and push with your back and ur butt flat against the item u want to push. You will be surprised how much more strength u have to push. Ur thighs are way stronger that way. Let me know if u tried it? Did it work for you ?
yes exactly! this is how I rearranged my heavy antique bedroom furniture as a little girl and how I now rearrange my house as a grown woman 😂 you can move just about anything inch by inch without hurting yourself this way!
I would get that freezer off the property as soon as possible. It's a train wreck. 😊 I'm glad you are able to work on cleaning out the barn while the weather is still cool. Love the video. You're doing an excellent job! 🥰
A very interesting clean out in the barn. I was scared for you to open the freezer too. Yuck! Lorraine's idea on moving the freezer was great. Happy Valentine's Day 💘❤🎉
The big horseshoes with blocks that you found look like the ones used for the big lick. It’s extremely controversial. 😢 The things you asked if they were nunchucks look like twitches. Another (not as) controversial horse tool. I won’t say more, I’ll just let you do your own research. Looks like it may have been a tack and/or feed room based on the red bridle hooks mounted on the wall. And the freezer could have been used to store feed away from rodents.
There's a reason people leave junk behind. Rule #1 of cleaning up other people's junk - NEVER look inside bags or containers! 😬 Oh, and rule #2 - ALWAYS wear a mask!
Awesome job guys !!!!! I once had to clean out a chest freezer that was holding numerous chickens, and goodies like gizzary, hearty and livers after a power outage , definitely not a pleasant job , with that being said , we got it done !!!!! It happens !!!!!! Great job on the videos , viewers untill you quit !!!!!!
YES VANN!!! I said the same thing, hang up those horse shoes for good luck. Of course a little 🙏🏻 prayer doesn't hurt either. 🙏🏻 Nurse Judi in Scottsdale
Instead of throwing metal in the garbage where it will be buried and never breakdown, why don't you save all of the metal from your barn and sell it to a scrap yard? You would save the environment and make some cash.
Jason I love you alls podcast, it’s great to listen to you all discuss things you encounter on a homestead, I believe by listening I’ll be much better prepared to handle problems based on your discussions about your experience.
We had a neighbor who had their mother in their freezer for years so they could collect her Social Security, though she really didn't seem to mine.... The new owner were not impressed.
I seen another Homes sitter where he had a bunch of junk on his property as well and he went and soda for scrap and he got some bucks. Maybe should try to get some money out of those things just a thought.
The thing with the chain is a Twitch. It's used on horses Nose. The other things were Saddle and Bridle holders. That Freezer is toast. Probably water from thawing.
Gross. Yuck. found myself covering up my mouth and nose with my turtleneck as I watched this. Won't go away though, so tackling it in cooler months was a wise choice! Just what a weird combo of stuff up on the top of that "office."
The long piece of wood with a chain is called a twitch. Horse people use that on the bottom lip of horses to control them. I'll keep looking through your vid and see if I recognize anything else. It's been a long time since I trained and rode horses, though. Ok, those are saddle holders and I think the little ones are for bridles.
Jason I own a 1860's cabin here in Arkansas that has a 'tin' roof. The last time that roof was replaced was in the 1970's. We had some leaking in the late 90's and a family member suggested some ROOF CEMENT. I'm not sure which kind we bought, but it was silver. We painted it on and it has lasted for a Long time. it might be something you could use as a temporary solution to your barn roof.
I like the term "Hobbit pig." Clearing out the fence area with the DR Power Brush Hog! I'm impressed. That's great that your friend Brian is helping you today. The fence line looks so much better. It's great that Brian took several trees down. I'd be afraid to open that freezer Jason. I'm glad you got into that room. I loved Lorraine's idea with the hand truck onto the pallet. I've heard that those old style freezers are good for feed storage. Yup, maybe that one is too far gone! I'll watch the podcast. Great Lorraine, chicken, BBQ sauce, rice and beans, salad, and fermented salsa. Yum Penelope, bread rolls! Thanks for this video Contreras family!
Before you throw out those Iron Horse Shoes, you could call Ben Hollar and ask if he could use them for a project. I know he works with metals, don't know if he does Iron. Just a thought! Reduce, reuse, recycle!
Black snake in a barn is your friend. They are only there to eat mice and rats. Get rid of mice and rats and they will move. Look out though, they also like chickens and eggs. Truth is they dislike people more than people dislike them.
The wooden handle with the chain loop is called a lip twitch. Some don't like them, some believe they are a useful tool, I am somewhere in the middle. It is difficult to describe how to use it without it sounding awful. So I am going tonleave it at that.
I saw lots of stuff that was usable in the loft. Clean that bucket out. Use those wire baskets or donate them. Lorraine...a nice toaster oven is what I use to re-heat leftovers. So glad you don't have a microwave. I got rid of mine 20 years ago!!!
Am I the only one who was holding my breath to avoid breathing in the contents of the freezer?
It’s an old tradition to hang up found horse shoes in the barn for good luck! 😀 some folks hang them over the door.
The bigger things on the wall you thought might be for saddles, are just that. The smaller ones are for the halters and bridles
thanks
That old freezer can be used for feed storage. I know someone that did that for their chicken feed and it worked great for keeping out unwanted pests.
Problem is the unknown of mold spores that have seeped Behind the walls Inside the freezer
Exactly we have always used freezers to hold feed.
Ben at Dollar Homestead could use that for feed to solve his rat problem.
You can also grow worms.
When I bought my retirement farm one of the many things left behind was a dead rusty freezer which I am unable to get it loaded by myself so I did decide to use it for critter free feed storage after painting the outside. Works great.
The large shoes are “boots” for Tennessee Walking Horses. The chain loops on a stick is a twitch to put on a horse’s upper lip to control a horse.
the boots for the horses is cruel, it makes them do an unnatural walk, it is also painful for the poor things, Check out Big Lick in Tennessee, sad.
Horrible abuse for horses trained that way!!! Tennessee Walkers
And the muzzle is for horses that founder easily, to slow down there eating when the grass is lush.
We hung all the old horse shoes to hang on the barn walls. You will appreciate them some day.
Jason and Lorraine; you are such a great team! And Penelope, those dinner rolls looked delicious!
The chain on the wooden handle is a horse twitch. It's used to calm and restrain them for a short period of time. And yes, those were saddle racks on the wall.
That was super gross. Sorry you had to deal with that freezer!
Still say Loraine, Meg, Gina need a Kitchen Talk Pod Cast!
Budgets, gardens, greenhouse, food preservation, animals, ... whatever strikes their fancy!
There might be a drain hole somewhere on the bottom of the freezer. Dry it out and use it for rodent-free storage
Lorraine is always so positive!
She even acknowledged Jason's admonition that "it" might fall down....then two seconds later (11:38) he makes the "quick, disappearing, clanging metal exit!😂🤣🙃🙂🙃😆🫢👏👏👏👏
Glad you're OK Jason....Safety first!
Boom Box! Wow. That’s awesome! You are a brave man going in the barn! Treasures or snakes? !
That's called a twitch. It's a pretty brutal way to hold a horse still. (Nunchuck thing)
That’s one scary freezer! 🫢
All I could think was ‘oh no, Jason fell over’
That room is called a tack room. That freezer probably held things they wanted to keep cool and dry.
Hey Jason 👋. That mesh " muzzle" is for when horses were working in the field, so they wouldn't munch on the crops, like if they were using horses to cultivate.
You are exactly right! When I was a kid, we used them on our mules to keep them from eating our corn while plowing the corn. (I am 85 now.)
So smart Lorraine! Bravo~
Metal scrapper would take the freezer. You did such a great job cleaning the loft and horse stuff/freezer room. Now it is DONE!
You have the hoist. Strap it and lift it up then roll trailer under the freezer. Good luck
Put the freezer outside on its side to empty it out, so it won't be so heavy to move anymore
i love the podcast yuppers 34 i still say Lorraine Meg and Gina should have a wife podcast hugsssssss
The barn, though old and leaky, is a real treasure. Be thoughtful in your demolitition. Having such great capacity to house larger animals in a protected environment is a definite luxury on the farm. It needs a bit of love, yes, but its value, function and beauty are the things dreams are made of!

I have an old freezer like that and use it to keep feed in. Keeps the critters out nicely!
Loraine has such skillful ideas!
Look up carpenter ants. Both they and termites will grow wings when they want to spread and make new colonies.
FYI
GOOD job and idea Lorraine!
That freezer would be great for a worm bed or compost
You might have to remove the freeon in the freezer before the dump will take. Maybe call dump first.
We have that same boom box! My husband still uses it. LOL. I'm glad there wasn't a horse's (or human!) head in that freezer. Good advice for moving it, Lorraine!
Gotta say. What a find (the freezer not so much). Lots of old stuff.
That building would make a great workshop. Just sayin'
The wooden handle with a chain is a twitch. It is used to subdue the horse during procedures, etc. by twisting it around the horses lips.

Lorraine is a great pro lem solver.🎉

Jason, Lots of Kitty Litter to absorb any liquid and add baking soda...LOTS🤮
Probably not an office but a tack room. Always interesting to see what "treasures" you unearth. Hello from Australia
I would get that freezer off the property as soon as possible. It's a train wreck. 😊 I'm glad you are able to work on cleaning out the barn while the weather is still cool. Love the video. You're doing an excellent job! 🥰

Looks like it may have been a tack and/or feed room based on the red bridle hooks mounted on the wall. And the freezer could have been used to store feed away from rodents.
I think if you take the lid off it will be a lot easier to get it on a truck?
Old freezers can be used for feed storage but not that one. 🚛🚛
Call CSI!!! That looks like a dead body in that freezer lol 😂
There's a reason people leave junk behind. Rule #1 of cleaning up other people's junk - NEVER look inside bags or containers! 😬 Oh, and rule #2 - ALWAYS wear a mask!
doh!😆
Saddle racks, bridle racks, and chain twitches.
I had that exact modal stereo in 1988!! 😂
The BEST podcast I've ever watched, or listened to!!! I don't bother wasting my time with any others!!! You rock Jason & Lorraine
That is a tack room. They hung their saddles and bridles on the wall thingys
Awesome job guys !!!!! Man I've put shoe packages like that together for some horses. What a pain in the rear.
great job moving the freezer
thanks
I made ewe face the entire time you messed with that disgusting freezer! 🤢

im sure there are people out there screaming sell them to meeeee lol hugssss
We had a neighbor who had their mother in their freezer for years so they could collect her Social Security, though she really didn't seem to mine.... The new owner were not impressed.
3:49 chicken treats! thank you for sharing
Man cleaned the body out the fridge, used some windex and paper towels and put that thing up on Facebook market “lightly used chest freezer”
A couple good coats of paint on that roof could help some with the leaks.
Loraine has a head like a housecat , which in KY that just means she's really Smart. Great idea with that palet🎉
I seen another Homes sitter where he had a bunch of junk on his property as well and he went and soda for scrap and he got some bucks. Maybe should try to get some money out of those things just a thought.
Sadle rack and bridal, halter holders
You can use it for clean canning jars ready to use to can, nothing will get inside, not even humidity!!!
The thing with the chain is a Twitch. It's used on horses Nose. The other things were Saddle and Bridle holders. That Freezer is toast. Probably water from thawing.

Good idea that worked Lorraine!!
Congratulations to reach 250tsd🎉🎉🎉
Smart, very smart mama .
Take ur side and dump. With flatbed.
I laughed really hard. When you said I’m bout to put this on my pigs. 😂😂
Great Teamwork a woman's brain. 😂😂 You were brave
At least you didn't find some petrified, human remains in that freezer!
Maybe it would have been easier to open the side of the barn and push it out the back
not numb chuck nasty handling of horse wrap it on top lip and twist nasty people
Ant’s don’t fly but termites do! 😳
Old freezer, you could make a cold plunge tank.

Ugh, on those snakes 😳 I am not afraid of snakes but where I live we don't have any poisonous ones
Black snake in a barn is your friend. They are only there to eat mice and rats. Get rid of mice and rats and they will move. Look out though, they also like chickens and eggs. Truth is they dislike people more than people dislike them.
Your family is great ❤
Freezer would be going straight to the dump.
Lorraine was a smarty pants today! Good job!😊
Old freezers are a great rodent 🐭🐀🐿 proof place to store bagged grain
The wooden handle with the chain loop is called a lip twitch. Some don't like them, some believe they are a useful tool, I am somewhere in the middle. It is difficult to describe how to use it without it sounding awful. So I am going tonleave it at that.
What good shall I do today...oh look Vodka! 😁
If you run out of things for Loraine to do, I could use her on my farm, she's a beast!
Saddle racks, halter and bridle hooks.
use the old freezer for storage of feed
I saw lots of stuff that was usable in the loft. Clean that bucket out. Use those wire baskets or donate them. Lorraine...a nice toaster oven is what I use to re-heat leftovers. So glad you don't have a microwave. I got rid of mine 20 years ago!!!
Just wanted to say that I enjoy the podcast you do Al and Ben.
Torch those ants!
