NARROWBOAT Living - Going in circles for Winter … but just look who’s around us! Ep85

  • In this week’s video, we start where we left off last time - we had just moored up a little way from Market Harborough. We take a walk into town and find some unexpected inhabitants at the St Dionysius Church … who can that be? 🤔
Back at the boat that night, we are shocked to see who is CAUGHT ON CAMERA! 😳
Living full-time on our NARROWBOAT floating home is not always straightforward in WINTER, some times you end up going in circles, it’s just WHAT WE DO!
And after a short cruise, we find the perfect mooring … but it doesn’t end there, what’s going on around us is just amazing, it makes us feel so incredibly lucky!
Lots to see, but you need to be patient. We can’t wait to hear your reactions in the comments below, let us know what you thought!
Martin takes on a little DIY so we can get some washing done and Julie takes to the air with the DJI Mini2 drone and shows how the Market Harborough Union Wharf used to be over 200 years ago!
Hope you enjoy this week’s vlog! xx😃

If you’re new to our channel, just a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today, so lovely to have tou all onboard! ❤️
Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
We’ve made a couple of playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises and the other is all of our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

The zooming on your camera was so fascinating to see those birds on the church steeple. And Julie you describing how things used to be in the basin was really good, the effort you put into it, Amazing 👏. Your ariel view is always a welcome. And you must be so chuffed with your new gizmo. 🎉Can't wait until next week. Stay safe dear friends xx

Hi Glenn, thank you for such lovely compliments, this has made my day, it does take me 3-4 days to edit each vlog and we try to make it interesting for our viewers, so to receive a comment like this really makes it all worthwhile! ❤️ It was amazing to see the Peregrines, I was so pleased that my camera was able to get some detail, they are stunning birds! And couldn’t believe Martin saw the Sparrow hawk catch the pigeon, to think this is all going on around us and so close to our home, the badger, fox, kingfisher etc, is lovely. Still learning with the gimbal, but getting there. Thank you so much Glenn xx

I sit here this evening keeping one eye on the weather because thunderstorms and tornados are happening just west of us and headed our way as I watch the beautiful village/town you are currently moored in. What a beautiful area. I love the history of Britian/UK. I'm sure you may be used to it but, it is amazing how you have bridges, buildings, roads.... that are decades if not centuries older than the country I live in. Thanks for another very nice video. Take care.

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  5 месяцев назад +1

Hi Roger, hope you’re ok and the weather is calming down around you, keep safe! xx We absolutely love the history surrounding the canals and rivers, as they were the highways long before there were trains and roads. Even tiny little villages are steeped with amazing stories. It always fascinates me to see the dates carved on the locks showing when they were built, some are over 200 years old, yet still working perfectly today with no computer wizardry, or electric, just manual common sense engineering that lasts forever! Just look at the Foxton Locks that we went down a couple of weeks back (the Yikes one lol) just amazing! We try to mention a little of the history, hopefully without boring people, but leaving the lion’s share for people to find out or see for themselves when they visit. So pleased you are enjoying our little videos, thank you Roger! xx

I thought it was great that you showed the food. I'd like you to go on a bit longer and explain what you eat. I think all international viewers would be interested.
There was a sparrowhawk 🦅 in our dahlia garden 🌼 the other day. However, he hadn't caught a pigeon, but our blackbird. That was very sad 😢.
Did you know that sparrowhawks hunt in circles and only hunt in the same area after 30 days?

I filmed the food as I remembered you saying before that you would like to see it, I’ll try and include a description next time 👍 Aww that is sad the Sparrowhawk took the Blackbird, but to him/her it’s simply food, sometimes nature is harsh, but stunning to watch though. They’re quite hard to spot, but often there’s a photographer or two there with cameras set up on tripods and if you get chatting you can ask to see through their camera lenses! My photos were nice, but not half as good as the detail they get with their special big lenses! Thanks Paul xx

Julie what a tremendous job you do with wildlife. The falcon and kingfisher shots are superb. As a photographer I know it's not always easy getting that close. May I ask what camera you use? Keep up the great work with your photos and videos. Hello from Maryland.

Hi Shar, thank you for your lovely compliments, for the everyday filming I just use my old iPhone 11 Pro Max, but for the wildlife shots to get close I use my bridge camera. I couldn’t get on with the DSLR cameras, so just have a point and shoot with a good zoom. The bridge camera I use is the Canon Power Shot SX70 HS Thanks Shar! xx

@@JulieandMartinonRIB Thanks for the camera info. That Power Shot is amazing. I shoot with a Canon R6 with a Tamron 18-400 lens but I honestly believe I couldn't get the shots you are able to get with your Power Shot. I recently got a DJI OSMO Pocket 3 and am anxious to get out and take it for a spin. It doesn't have the powerful zoom though. Looking forward to more great videos from you and Martin. Take care guys and have a great weekend.

Yes I love the Power Shot, it is 20.3 mega pixels and has a 65 x Optical zoom, which is the equivalent to a whopping 21-1365mm lense!!! It can zoom further, but goes into digital zoom which then starts to pixelate. Thank you for your lovely compliments though, I love getting a good wildlife shot. Did you see the foxes I got a few episodes ago? Here’s the link in case you missed it ruclips.net/video/Jc2jNKnu2_o/видео.htmlsi=cleL19ZELzQE5QvT Thanks Shar! xx

Lovely vlog Julie.. do you mind me asking what camera you used to zoom in on these birds? Rob

Hi Rob, of course I don’t mind. It’s only a bridge camera, as I’m not clever enough to use a DSLR lol, but it has a fantastic zoom capability. It’s the Canon Powershot SX70 HS and I tend to use it in Auto mode most,y, but you can use it manually too. Thank you so much! xx

Love your videos. I have a question. Do you ever have mice, rats, or squirrels try to get on board?

Hi, thank you so much! Haven’t had any of those no, we never leave any food laying around in the well deck or on the stern, as that would attract vermin. So far, the most we’ve had is a crow standing on the roof huddled against the chimney too keep warm for a while and the odd pigeon lol. Thank you! xx

Looking at going up that way and do the Market Harborough arm not looking at staying in the basin bit though. What would you say are the nearest moorings to the basin but out far enough not to be on top of other boats really. Don’t mind a walk to get to the basin?

Hi Nick, after you go through bridge 14 you’ll come to a winding hole, then a short distance, couple of bends and you’ll see a stretch of Armco on the right, we moored there, the towpath is tarmac and it’s not too far to walk to the shops. It’s before the narrowing where the boaters services sign is. We moored there at the end of last week’s video when there was no room at the basin, if you watch that you’ll see where I mean. Hope this helps, it’s lovely down there. thanks Nick xx
