Planing to go for pike soon in Medway, I use Ryder double hooks, never had a double hooked fish yet, but will offset 1 just in case. Great vid & fishing as usual !!
lets get dale brutha yeah there’s some big eels hear mate I usually get a 30 each year but didn’t this year, I’m going to head to the mainland for pike as they look so fun to catch an look mean as hell haha
Grate vid thanks Graham!! I loved your story's at the end. would love for you to sit down and tell us sone more storeys of your big predator fishing back in the day!! Thanks for all your hard work your a top top bloke
Great video as per mate its genuinely good to see someone as passionate about fishing as you are and always give quality tips without trying to promote a product every 4 minutes lol top guy
Very happy to have found you via TA Outdoors. I am a horrendous fisherman. My daughter on the other hand seems to call them to her hook, bait or no. But I'm hoping to glean a little from your channel and just have fun. Cheers from the Chesapeake Bay area, U.S.
Great video Graeme. I found some Drennan doubles that are similar to your VB hooks, which I've used to make up rigs for twitching deadbaits. Seem to do the job.
2:00 I might be mistaken but I think that's where I caught my first Wye Barbel. Downstream there are some big overhanging tree's on the far bank and I was watching some locals have fish after fish so worth a chuck if you're in the area, the swim nearest is very high off the water but there is a path down to the water on the left
Love your. Videos keep them coming. Great idea droppi g a sprat in at your feet if a pike follows the lure but doesn't take it. Tried it 3 times. Result 2 fish. Thanks for the tip Dave B
cool!..the Gothic pike ...most trickiest fish I think to deal with on bankside in this land...interesting filming styles going on there...awesome river lunker that was hope it is still avoiding the otters. what I do when getting out over that type of marshy ground to get a cast is to put stray fallen tree branches down to support ones weight. been sprat fishing today myself. with single hook through head twitching ...3 strikes.. 2 landed ..little jacks but good sport..
Try the tag rig..single hook..I use a circle hook...barbless or flattened barb. Bait is hair rigged using the tagging gun...Cut fins off especially tail fin. With circles they can self hook into the bait on the cast so i use a piece of rig foam on the hook..tags come in various lengths. Always hooks em in the scissor not deep. Easy to remove from nets. You have to leave the take to develop do not hit them straight away..! That bit takes a little getting used to. Hit them too soon and you won't get a hook hold.. Bale arm off and backbiters are better for pike. Personally i always have an uptrace, no lead..just enough swan shot to hold bottom. Rig casts well and bait is not following a lead. You will need multi-strand knotable trace wire..i use savage gear..as you need a loop ..basically a knotless knot.. I crimp the swivel clip on the other end. Some tie it on. Google pikewatch for rig details..Craig will give you any advice you require... I have used this rig for years now and never have a deep hooked fish..Yes you will lose an odd one but you do with trebles. A single hook is not only safer for the pike..unhooking is far quicker and there is no damage to the gills or inside the pikes' mouth. And yes it will hold in the scissors..i've had pike well over 20lb and in summer when they fight way more strongly than in winter. Always check inside the mouth for all the crap some idiots leave in there because they're too scared to unhook a pike..!!! Also i down size those bloody ship anchors they put on pike lures...those things are way too big and mostly designed for sea fishing..Most of my lures now have single hooks on them.. You do NOT need treble hooks for pike.. One reason i have an uptrace is too give better abrasion resistance..second reason is i have a couple beads and a small ring above the uptrace with a bead above the ring..i can clip on a float and switch from bottom baits to float fishing without breaking down the rig. No lead remember..And back again..If I'm worried about the ring snagging then i leave that off and just tie on a small loop of mono/braid to clip the float on and tie a stop knot. The shot will hold bottom even in strong winds..i haven't used leads for pike for years.. don't even have any with me. The advantage is it gives zero resistance to the pike (bale arm open)..in conjunction with the drop off backbiter indicators i place under the reel spool so they will drop off..or drop down if the fish moves toward you..And it casts well..
Favourite place to be on the river. In the heat of the summer you see some right massive chub off that white bridge. Its worth a trip down to Llangarren (home of redmire :) )
Looking at that VB double hook, which you twisted a little, reminds me of a treble with one hook bend snipped off. Maybe something to try if the doubles are not available? May give it a go myself!
Start off small get some small lures hard and soft plastic ones try catching a few perch and small pike to start off then wen u get the hang of it up your size of lures and go for the big ones thats your best bet hope this helps.......
Great fun Graeme thank you. I'm sure there are version of the vb hook on the web but as you say probably not as good. I snelled a couple of Aberdeen hooks together after seeing you use those some years ago didn't catch anything but that's me not the hook. Aye! Who was that young whippersnapper getting in on the video wearing all that posh gear? He looked a bit handy with that rod!
Went pike fishing last Thursday in a lake that has many 20 pounders, and at lunch time I realised I had been fishing in the wrong lake all morning. Fishing with a pilchard in a lake that didn't have any pike in it. I think they should improve their signage.
I doubt it,more likely to be inside the tums of all the tums Cormorants our inland waters now have. Salmon parr would be a one-bite wonder for a Cormorant.
I have just started pike fishing on my local river and had one the other day netted the fish and obviously started to twist and roll and my lure got stuck in the net with the fish but thankfully my dad came too help, any tips or advice with be appreciated.
Drennan made a double hook for a time, a copy of the Vic Bellars you have there BUT I found them to be a bit soft and blunted easily... you can't get them now. I have silver brazed hooks together, I reckon a size 2 or 4 straight through with its eye and say, a No8 with the eye snipped off brazed on at opposites. Silver solder / braze melts at 500-600*c so you do need to get the hooks to dull red heat, not sure how it affects the hardness and tempering to be honest, that might be a drawback.
Hi Graham, great video as usual. On those double hooks, have you tried the Ryder hooks from Decathlon? I bought some because I thought they were like the ones you have, but I was surprised because the hooks are actually in a 90 degree angle instead of aligned!
Really enjoyed that with the atmospheric music and slow motion. Great stuff! What a travesty that would have been if that Otter had killed such a majestic fish. Conservation gone very wrong!
Love your films but come on greame, always have your landing net set up and to hand. It's a lesson that any junior Angler should learn. Tight lines and look forward to more vids.
It was set up but the near vertical bank was full of net-snagging brambles.I could never have got down there with a net which is why I ran to the next swim to see if it was an easier netting option...it wasn't. And I could never have climbed the bank without the net snagging again. Easy to see from the armchair, but in practice a nightmare place to net a fish.If you fish the Wye you'll know the 12 foot banks are dangerous... I won't lose any sleep,I did my best, and that's what counts.
OMG,at the start,is he going to fall in,is the rod going in,then,as if that wasn't enough you try getting stuck in the mud !! hope Mrs P hasn't seen this one ! Anyway, great stuff as always, that was some pike too, can't believe an otter would go for a fish that big,but could see the damage they do.
Film up in the foreign section, catching Blackjacks on fly. I've done plenty of Bonefish on fly,Tarpon,Blackfin Tuna, usual stuff, but never used a video just stills cameras.
Speaking of trebles being a nightmare, I went fishing the other night, stuck on a pair of gloves and got caught up in a lure with 3 trebles on it lol. Safe to say I'll be switching to single hooks! Rookie mistakes haha, peace from Dublin Ireland 😁
You say you don't do big fish fishing any more. I am so dissapointed , LOL. I was waiting for you to go back after that 6 gill shark that beat you last time. Hi hi.
Meat Merchant is an American term for someone who likes using baits over lures, which is what I do. If you gave me a solid fresh bait or a lure,I would always use the bait...as the saying goes..each to their own .
Again Good viewing. Thank you GreyHam (lol) :) for Great videoes. I have been a Pike angler for more years thank i would like to admit. Thankfully in all those yrs, I have only ever deep hooked 4 Pike. Sadly all in the days when barbed trebles were i suppose what you called the way to fish for them. 3 of them were small jack's and were obviously in trouble but i caught a Big Female from a pt some 30 yrs back at night. She sadly had Swallowed the treble and though i tried to get it out i knew i was going to rip her stomach out if i did. So i cut the trace as close as possible to her stomach and let her go as i couldn't kill such a beautiful fish. Did i do the right thing? It's played on my mind for Yrs . Keep up you great vid's not only are they educational they are fun for us all. That what fishing and Life is about. One Love to you ALL :)
John Wilson was so right about the re-introduction of otters, they do not just eat Eels or small fish but bite away at the tail of a magnificent big fish like that, what with otters, cormorants and Eastern Europeans eating away at our fish, god help them!!!
How has your fishing been lately? Any big catches? 🎣
Gotta 1.5 lb roach a few days ago and a dace that was just under a pound. Float fishing has been really good this winter, better than usual!
Blanket last week in Grafham trout fishing... :(
Had some congers to 18 and a lot of bass but only a few over the 5/6 pound mark then made a crab pot vid 🎣🎣

Planing to go for pike soon in Medway, I use Ryder double hooks, never had a double hooked fish yet, but will offset 1 just in case.

Love your videos mate, have watched most of them. From Tampa Florida
Was nice to stumble across this video, I’m from Hereford and plan to fish the wye for pike this winter
Cool, I like hearing stories like the one about the shark straightening the hooks.
Very nice video and nice catch.

Nice Pike's 👍 & Awesome tips 😜
Much support from Australia
Thanks for that, hope the heatwave is bearable, just heard you were getting records temps.
TA Fishing bearable but can’t be bothered to fish at the moment. Waiting for the winter snapper season now
Ha ha that’s me... I did think the footage hadn’t come out.. I actually caught it again a couple of weeks later
Well Done, at least it shows the Otter never got it 2nd time around !
Had a much bigger one this week too
Damn those otters are nasty! I like this guy he's got good piking tips for river fishing!
Really was a huge pike that👌
i'd give it 20-25lbs fairly confidently.
Great video.
Hah thats pretty funny I was literally just watching some of youre old videos and now you upload a new one!! How bad!! 👌👌😂😂
When Graeme says “Smith” 😂
Oh Smith 😂🤣 me and my mate who watch Graham always have a laugh about Smith 😂🎣
Pikes have been known to give legendary fights at the end of a hook.
yet again another great vid.

What lure is that you started with? is it custom made or available to buy anywhere?
What are u trying to do mate? Berley up the pool table??? 🤣

It could work, worth a go
hi graham, im just getting into pike fishing. I'm only 10, and I am not Shure what lure to use, whats your advise
Start off small get some small lures hard and soft plastic ones try catching a few perch and small pike to start off then wen u get the hang of it up your size of lures and go for the big ones thats your best bet hope this helps.......
Excellent vids sir, really entertaining. I am an angler very similar to you. 66 years young and still fishing as much as possible.
Great video, Kamatsu do the same double hook which is already offset, if anyone want to use them.
As always mate great video.. Would you recommend nipping barbs off with the lures.
Not a bad idea, some trebles have huge barbs. You could just crush them with pliers if you wanted.
I cant be the only one who had the Mission Impossible theme going through my head as Graeme shimmied down that bank, right?
Great fun Graeme thank you. I'm sure there are version of the vb hook on the web but as you say probably not as good. A Pilchard, that's interesting! Was it a bit soft or ok?
@@smitbar11 Absolutely fine, but I was advised to fish the margins so I didn't have any hard casting to do. An underhand swing was just the job.
Great vid again, is this where all the salmon Parr end up?
I doubt it,more likely to be inside the tums of all the tums Cormorants our inland waters now have. Salmon parr would be a one-bite wonder for a Cormorant.
God bless Mr Graeme brilliant you should come up here on the Eden In Cumbria and I will show you how to catch our none existing spring salmon
Classic old school. Twitched Sprats and if not mistaken good old mono :-)
Eau de spratt juice... maybe a new line in totally awesome aftershaves ?
Graeme beautiful Roof rack, we can get loads of stuff on that. He's a good lad ,that mike of yours. Woooahh happy days

No,never been up there.
Where is that river that spot?
River Wye at Hereford.
Bartonsham dairy farm. My usual stretch for barbel

@@markdemell8056 not at all lol
Where can I buy Spratts from?🎣
I get them from wet fish counter in supermarket.Depends if they are in season yet
@@TAFishing ok thanks 🎣
So did you not weight that big pike?

Where to go for pike fishing near Bristol ?
You say you don't do big fish fishing any more. I am so dissapointed , LOL. I was waiting for you to go back after that 6 gill shark that beat you last time. Hi hi.
I can't catch Pike!!! So jealous.
It's okay man! First few months I didn't get anything! Now I catch every time 🎣 keep at it man you'll get there 👍
Forgot to say if you do use the tag rig do not strike as you normally would..just wind down and lift into the fish..
Hi Graeme! I landed a 22 pounder pike yesterday man! well 21.9. Pb using mackerel also 11lb rainbow trout ! Happy days love your channel 🎣
the wye at one time was full of big pike ,its a pity its not like it was
Thank you Graeme and Mike... Meat merchant = Butcher... Admit it, you're just a Butcher! lol

Nice one :)
when do decide to keep the fish..for supper and so on..
Otters otters and more Otters , courtesy of the" Environment " agency ,
Pike are ok but prefer barbel chub etc
2:03 kingfisher?
Well done but that was silly leaving your rod.
Never been pike fishing. Just curious though do they make good eating? That was an absolute huge fish...wow.
John Wilson was so right about the re-introduction of otters, they do not just eat Eels or small fish but bite away at the tail of a magnificent big fish like that, what with otters, cormorants and Eastern Europeans eating away at our fish, god help them!!!
