A group of American soldiers manages to survive over the course of World War II, from the Battle of Britain to the fall of the Third Reich. Along the way, a number of unfortunate incidents occur. White soldiers violently abuse fellow black soldiers, a deserter is summarily executed on New Year's Eve and a sergeant takes advantage of a shell-shocked French woman. War is hell for the winners and the losers in this episodic meditation on the horrors that exist on and off the field of battle.
An all-star saga of a U.S. infantry squad in Europe during World War II. Based on the short story collection "The Human Kind" by Alexander Baron. A great cast including: George Peppard, Eli Wallach, George Hamilton, Vincent Edwards, Jeanne Moreau, Melina Mercouri, Rosanna Schiaffino, Romy Schneider, Elke Sommer, Senta Berger, Michael Callan, Jim Mitchum, Peter Fonda, Albert Finney. First released on November 18, 1963.

Melina Mercouri, Jeanne Moreau, Romy Schneider, Senta Berger, Elke Sommer, Rosanna Schiaffino - Beautiful and strong cast!
Thank you for presenting our military in a most interesting rendition of WW II. It has a wide range of issues not ordinally presented.
I haven’t seen this movie for 60 years when I was a kid with my dad in a theater. It was hard to understand goodness of this movie. I watched “The Longest Day” less than a year before which was my easier to understand for kids. Great movie!
A few years ago there was a version on RUclips in which some "controversial" scenes (such as the lynching of 2 black soldiers by a mob of southern soldiers in an Italian bar, in the face of the horror and impotence of the bar owner and 2 characters white protagonists), had been removed.
I hope that's not the case with this one.
Jim Mitchum, George Peppard, and those beautiful Senta Berger, Elke Sommer, Romy Schneider, I remember them well!!
Saw this maybe 50 years ago and never forgot it--especially that ending. Thank you for making it possible for me to see again.

I saw it possibly 50 years ago too and especially the ending . I was trying to find the movie again over the years and only came across it by chance. I was sure this was the one not by the name or actors and watched it fully until the tragic end.....
Great cast....the shooting of the Jack Russell Terrier was just uncalled for......hated that!
A powerful and intelligent movie, taking a much bleaker and more realistic view of the horrors of combat than most war films of the 1950s and '60s The bleak ending in the ruins of post-war Berlin is particularly effective. For both George Hamilton and George Peppard this was one of the best films of their respective careers.
Which isn't saying much for those two, though Peppard was a decent actor before he became a caricature.
Very good movie with no fake glorious stuff . Nobody wins in a war. Thank you for showing this, its a must to see.
Yes they do. Creation of UN, decolonization, charter of human rights…
There is no other way to stop a megalomaniac or a brainwashed megalomaniacal culture.
Our reptilian overlord bankers win big in every war, seeing they fund both sides
Good movie. Everyone suffers when there's a war, but some do win. I was born and raised in Denmark, we were occupied for 5 years by the Germans, when the Germans were defeated, we along with many other European countries won.
If everyone in Allied countries during World War II had your attitude, we would all be saluting the Nazi flag today. WWII had winners and all the winers of today living in western countries have them to thank.
That was my point.@@Redwhiteblue-gr5em
I have seen this movie before. You won't be disappointed with this one. This one is in the Classic category. Not your average WW2 shootem' up flick, but real stuff going on to keep you thinking.
I saw this movie with my parents. It had to have been in late 64 or early 65 because I had just finished learning Russian at the Defense Language Institute. My mother was impressed that I could translate what the Russian soldier was saying. I think I understood 2 words this time.
I recognized the word for Why?
Pretty damm good cast in this movie: George Peppard, George Hamilton, Vincent Edwards, Eli Wallach, Senta Berger, Elke Sommer,Melina Mercouri.
The film made a big impact on me. I have been looking for it for a long time.
That one scene though, this was the ONLY guy in the US Army shot for repeated desertion in the entirety of WW2, as an example personally signed through by Eisenhower to serve as an example due to the severity of the situation during the Battle Of The Buldge.
Was this not the basis for the classic CBS film from the mid 70's "The Execution of Private Slovik" starring Martin Sheen? I believe it lost the Emmy to"The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" also from CBS. The entire decade of the 1970's was a golden era for broadcast made-for-tv movies.
Fun Trivia Fact: In December 1963, when this film and Kubrick's DR STRANGELOVE were both exhibited for critics, LIFE Magazine ran a "Special Double Issue" for the end of 1963 -- all about the movies, and they reviewed both in the "war movie" article. In their opinion, both movies were very flawed. Kubrick's slapstick seemed all wrong to make the case. THE VICTORS, they noted, was too grim for audiences at the time. Both went into general release in 1964 and THE VICTORS was mostly ignored but DR STRANGELOVE went on to become a cultural perennial. Second-run houses were said to run both on a double bill, and I'd love to have seen them that way on the big screen -- Satire meets Horror. Interesting that both movies came out together.
Good times.
It is no wonder, the Victors was very poorly made, while Dr Strangelove was a great satire.
@@bcwest56 & no wonder :

Great movie! I enjoyed it and it portrays the hell of war and what people needed to do to survive.

What a most intriguing and peculiar movie indeed ...
This movie had a lot of mixed messages. Very deep.

I think i was depressed for a year after watching this film.
Prophetic

Agreed. However, all the classic war films aren’t really meant to uplift our spirits. In films like Stalingrad (1993) and All Quiet on the Western Front and countless others, show us the true face of war, and impact it has on the soldiers that fought in it, and the civilians caught in the crossfire. The moral of all the best war films is that “War is hell”.

has it's groaner moments but the cast is excellent and a who's who of that era. Elke Sommer AND Senta Berger? As sisters who loathe each other -and did offscreen as well- in the same film a rare treat indeed.
George Peppard was one of the more underrated actors. He had genuine star quality and his scenes are particularly good; even George Hamilton shows up with a nice performance. Young Peter Fonda and Vince Edwards memorable.
For sheer cast value it's a treat.
It's aged well. It was carl Foreman's project and suffers from the one man production. He's np Orson Welles. But many of the bits are excellent and the location shooting works well.
Long but worth it...
I first saw it when I was a teenager in my native Denmark. I instantly fell in love with George Hamilton, the dark brooding type, my girl friend who went with me liked George Peppard. As I got older Peppard was more my type, especially in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Basically like them both in this movies.
The book of short stories this film is based upon ‘The Human Kind’ by British author Alexander Baron, is going to be reprinted in paperback later this year by the UK Imperial War Museum.
I’d also recommend Baron’s novel ‘From the City, From the Plough’ based upon his own experiences as a British infantryman in Normandy in 1944.
Many thanks for sharing this.....
A fantastic human experience.
A very cool old film. Ahead of its time!!

I cannot understand why this movie is so difficult to find. This version is the edited release. The original runs 175 minutes. Thank you for posting this
Really? I have only found this version and maybe another on Tubi that is 153 minutes. Do you know where to get the full version?
@sheldonf Here's hoping that a 'longer' version still even EXISTS! And that they will release it on HOME VIDEO (Blu-Ray! Please GOD, let there be a Blu-Ray version!)
When I watch this movie, I get the impression I'm watching "Bill Mauldin's Willie & Joe", 'live'. Without the 'humor'.
Reminds me when I was in the service. They put me in charge of five guys. They were knuckleheads. But they were my knuckleheads. 😅
It must have been nice to own five knuckleheads. I was in the Corps and there wasn't a knucklehead to be found anywhere or at anytime !
This film ruined "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" for me forever.
Thanks for the upload. I saw this when I was very young, I don't think I saw the whole film, but I partially remember the ending. except the way I recalled it was, I thought it was a German instead of a Russian and I thought they were creating a stalemate over who crosses over that plank of wood mid-way on it, like standing their ground. I was too young to know what George Hamilton said to the Russian at the time. All these years though it has always stuck with me and I always wanted to see the film again. After seeing it after all these years, I have to say that I am glad that I saw it again and get that it is about a lot of the unspoken horrors that happened during WWII and it sure is bleak. There are a lot of haunting scenes in it including the ending and as it seems to some posters here the scene about the individual chosen to be shot as an example for the other deserters, but to me, the one that got me the most was of Eli Wallach's characters face being blown away in the Hospital. It makes you think of the last time you saw him in the film, which was in that house during the bombing, which leads one to believe that the house was bombed while he and Jeanne Moreau were in it and he at least survived but was disfigured. Heavy stuff, but certainly real life!
Forgot all about this one on my favorite list.
I am not sure about the Berlin part, the US Army was very strict about fraternization back then, even into the 60s at least. I served in the 80s and it was no longer an issue. I missed the wall going up, but I was there when the wall came down.
What an ending !!!
you will remember it for the rest of your life like I have....50 years so far....
Saw it in the mid '60s. Definitely not your standard war flick of that time.
This movie had the strangest music score I've ever heard. Especially during the deserter execution. Very strange throughout.
The deserter execution part was true. The execution of Private Slovik.
Highlight of this film was beautiful Senta Berger wearing that luxurious fur coat with matching hat. All other scenes pale by comparison.
Overall a well acted movie taking snippets from various episodes over the duration of the war. Definitely did not care for the firing squad detail which was unpleasant to watch.😢😢😢
I’ve read claims that this was the first ever film to use a popular song in an ironic sense. If true, it’s made it’s mark in cinema history just for that.
"Dr Strangelove" opens with a flying tanker groping for an orifice on a B-52, to the melody of "Try A Little Tenderness".
Yes and there's Vera Lynn's 'We'll Meet Again' over the end-credits footage of exploding nuclear bombs. Dr Strangelove was released in 1964 and the Victors in 1963.@@samuelglover7685
Very good. Quite different.
Excellent 50s sci-fi British film nice plot
Wow…
How did that go thru the censorship rules in 1963?
An extraordinary movie…
I love film noir. One of the tropes was US soldiers returning from the war were confused by how much American women had changed, strong, independent, doing jobs men had done. But I always wondered if the soldiers were reeling from their interactions with women overseas.
A couple of others I might suggest are "A Walk in the Sun" by Lewis Milestone and "The Big Red One" by Sam Fuller.
It's important that civilans, like me , get an uncomfortable education in the dark side of war ... including the most 'moral' of wars . It was , on balance, absolutely necessary , and my Dad barely survived it (E.T.O.) and saw what northern Deutschland looked like , after V.E. day .
Great movie---and that part where that girl screwed over George Hamilton, brutal
THE BEST CHRISTMAS CAROL EVER
Yes, these were the consequences of our actions as Germans then. Traurig, aber wahr! 😥

Because American soldiers are really nice humane guys which is not the case with most of their opponents such as Nazi’s and SS, Imperial Japanese, North Koreans, Chicoms, Viet Cong, Saddam’s Guard, Al Quada.
