Shamalama ding dong boys. E Pluribus Unum. Man only lives one earthly life. We needed a preacher with the magical mystery tour of Rendering/Plastering! His name is Kirk. euphoric AGREED. spot on summary- Mike H. & Kirk et.al the Ggang - east coast & west coast intels have completely educated me. i have built an entire basement foundation solution around these 2 professors. with a structural engineer & myself in agreement --- solution was from the outside (not the inside!). that was the first step to my success. all the other steps came from hours & hours of vid binging on Mike & Kirk's offerings. i have not missed a single one. Mike H. - got the recipes, the mix,the paint - Portland is the game. Kirk G. & Jay - got the Weldcrete (!!),the pool trowel/hawk,the BMI/Omega products, the agents, the float, the techniques for vertical - and more. then there is Spiderlath,Toolcrete, white styrafoam, acetone, furred steel lath,Huepar lazer, custom tools & welded fixtures --- on & on. challenges, audacity to commit & returning to the vids --- the effort & its result far surpassing what i would have NOT accomplished -- without these 2 generous talents & their time to create this kind of content. i wished i could share my story in pics, but alas - the runups to their respective inboxes i can safely assume keeps their attention spans to the bare minimum. what positiveness i have -- i hope emanates successfully from this quick casting here. Midwest Missery -- can't thank REW Materials (and Don) for having these unique resources in stock. what's knowledge w/o the resources needed to carry it out . . . . . .
Scott Emmons you are in Midwest Missouri? I am in STL Illinois misery. Where are you all specifically? Great words. I am sure the work you are doing is great, because your words are great.
@@hatzlmike1 LoL!! fellow missery'an - but really .. . .. . St. Louis is much cooler than the lowly west side. like; 250 miles closer to the East Coast coolness! and don't joust me back w the obvious: "but KC is 250 miles closer to the West Coast sublime!" simply - we both lost out on the surfboards & waves life gig. yup- just south of KC right on i-49. fair means for gratuitous lifestyle but i meant it when i complimented REW Material here in KC. if not for them most of this material gig would be for nothing. Kirk throws a lot of technical k'base into every video, but trying to find those unique trade names here in the Midwest is a miserable epic. i made a phone call. a cold call to some trades desk in California --- a Lady answered & i plied her with my sorrowful predicament. Damn. she had it all down. in 7 minutes she had me 100% down on the mortars, the bags, the manufacturers & the names on those bags. a lucky strike. 2 phone calls later what were epic shutdowns were suddenly siphons of support. i never looked back after that day. you wrote a very cool post & it was eloquent in it's intent. your excellent skills inspired my mekanik's aspirations to pen a support in partnership. sweet stuff this life as gig can be.

Kirk, Maybe, hopefully you can answer this question. I have a Penna.home built in the 40's. I tore down some of the basement garage ceiling to insulate. The old ceiling is a 3/8 plasterboard material which the panels are 16" x 32". ( They actually used these throughout my home because at certain angles, I can tell where the joints are because the installers didnt level some area very well at all) Anyways, back to the garage. The drywall product in there is skim coated about 1/8" with what looks like cement ,(gray color) and it has the sandy texture you are doing here in this video. Its a very hard material. Im trying to figure out if it is actually a cement product , possibly used with a bonding agent? I need to replicate what was originally what was used back then. I noticed other homes in my old neighborhood have the same on their garage ceilings as well. The pieces I removed were pretty heavy compared to their size, making me think its a cement product. Thanks In advance!!
Good afternoon Terry, easy question brother. Your best bet to replicate is to use structo-lite. This does indeed have sand in it. It's heavy as it has limestone for strength.😉 Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. @@StuccoPlastering Hey Kirk, thanks for the reply! Do to the weight and looks of it, I thought it had to be some sort of cement. I 'll take tyour advice of the Structo-lite, but am curious to what it really is. Obviously Structo-lite wasnt around back then. lol Thank You!
Good evening Terry, dude. You might be surprised at how long structo-lite or any of these gypsum-based products with volcanic glass-like perlite has been around. They have been used in the UK for thousands of years. USG makes structo-lite nowadays, but before USG was selling this product, it was still manufactured or made for thousand of years in the UK. @@StuccoPlastering One last question. Can I just use 1 coat of structo-lite on the ceiling. What was already up there looked raw, meaning 1/8" thick, and not a smooth surface. It was evenly leveled, but it would draw blood if you somehow scraped your body on it. Just like a very course sandpaper. It also wasnt painted. Thanks!
Good evening Terry Dude. That is true, structo-lite. It has sand in it and perlite, which is a volcanic glass. If you want it smoother, use a heavy primer like Sherwin Williams and just primer it, yea, this primer costs there times as much as the big chain stores but is like glue. Or skim coat it with a taping mud, a veneer finish, or even a joint compound.🤔 Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. Hi Kirk. I am doing a bathroom remodel. I removed all the sheet rock except the ceiling. I am hanging the new rock tomorrow. I need to tape those joints at the wall/ ceiling joint. The ceiling has semi gloss paint on it. What type of primer or bonding agent should I use on the ceiling? I am hoping to get something from home depot or lowes. Doesn't look like I can get plaster weld until the middle of next week. Can you recommend something? Thanks
Evening Travis, new sheetrock needs mesh tape on all joints or seams. here's where you lost me, "the ceiling has Gloss paint on it" I dont understand is up and you painted it, or are you going to plaster it. if your going to plaster it, buy the Quik-rete bonding agent from Home depot. @@StuccoPlastering Thanks for the reply Kirk. It's a bathroom remodel. It was a complete painted bathroom before the tear out. I removed all the old sheet rock except the ceiling. The ceiling is still up. It's the old ceiling from when the bathroom was being used. It's painted, since it was a finished room. I hung sheet rock on the walls. That's new bare rock. The ceiling is the original rock and it's painted from prior to the tear out/remodel. Now I want to attach the new sheet rock that's on the walls to the old sheet rock that's on the ceiling. The walls are bare new rock, the ceiling is old and painted. I am looking for something that will make the tape in the seams stick to the painted sheet rock on the ceilings. I have heard that plaster weld works great. But my local Ames plastering store has never heard of plaster weld nor have the ever heard of anything that would help insure the bond of plastering products, nor do they know why someone would want to use something that would help with the bond. Anyways, suggestions on insuring that the taping compound sticks to the previously painted substrate.

Howdy Ben, Efflorescence is defined as a crystalline deposit of soluble salts, usually white in color, that appears on the surface of concrete, masonry, or stucco. Efflorescence salts are usually sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron (ferrous); carbonates of sodium and calcium; or sodium bicarbonate or silicate. However, almost any soluble salt that finds its way into the material may appear as Efflorescence. If the stucco or concrete does not absorb rainwater and leach through and the stucco or concrete and has no salts in it as a mineral, Efflorescence can't happen. Who can say the sand we're using is washed thoroughly of all salts is removed from the ocean? If the sand is removed from a river, it may not have salts. However, the cement and stucco can still be susceptible to Efflorescence for too many reasons to list here. So instead, google what causes, Efflorescence in stucco or concrete to read why you or I cant control its appearance.🍾
Hello Mr Giordano ! I've been noticing that you are explaining now and then the term HYDRATION . I am not trying to be a ''wise guy'' but in order to help everyone understand i will explain. HYDRATION is a term that originates from YDOR ΥΔΩΡ and that is the ancient Greek word for Water . You will find it also in HYDRAULICS which is ΥΔΡΑΥΛΙΚΑ which is HYDOR and AVLOS (Water and Pipe) or in the word HYDROFOBIC ( Hydor and Fobos ) --> Water and Fear --> Not friendly to Water ! The Greek or better yet HELLENIC word for Hydration is YDATOSI (ΥΔΑΤΩΣΗ) and , as you have very well expalined means get something (anything ) even your Body enough Water, wet ! euphoric AGREED. spot on summary- Mike H.

It's heavy as it has limestone for strength.😉

Or skim coat it with a taping mud, a veneer finish, or even a joint compound.🤔

Thanks
Evening Travis, new sheetrock needs mesh tape on all joints or seams.
here's where you lost me, "the ceiling has Gloss paint on it"
I dont understand is up and you painted it, or are you going to plaster it. if your going to plaster it, buy the Quik-rete bonding agent from Home depot.

Thanks for the reply Kirk.

How do you prevent efforence from coming through the foundation ?
Howdy Ben, Efflorescence is defined as a crystalline deposit of soluble salts, usually white in color, that appears on the surface of concrete, masonry, or stucco.
Efflorescence salts are usually sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron (ferrous); carbonates of sodium and calcium; or sodium bicarbonate or
silicate.
@@StuccoPlastering Wow thanks for the reply !

Thank you and as always Excellent Job .
