  • The legendary Musicradio WLS with John "Records" Landecker rockin' out in 1977! This is real LIVE Top 40 radio "From Chicago!". AM radio sucks now because it doesn't rock and fun to listen to like this. To a 15 year old in Oklahoma (where I taped this in my bedroom) WLS was an amazing sounding radio station. The huge reverb WLS used made DJ's sound like they were broadcasting from a mountaintop. Landecker was doing crazy things on the air that no night jock in Oklahoma was doing. And we had some wild ones in Tulsa (Crazy Steve on KTFX "Superfox 103") and OKC (Lester "Boogie Man" Micheals on KOFM, now doing mornings for "Magic 95" in Lawton OK) back then.
I was going to edit out the commercials but they are just too much fun. (be sure to listen for the Vagisil commercial at 5:24 !)
I recorded this on a cheap MacDonald AM/FM & Cassette recorder in my bedroom in Oklahoma. The old K-Mart 90 minute cassettes were in rough shape after 33 years. I did my best to clean up the sound quality with Sound Forge. It's still very rough in spots, especially when the signal starts getting weaker. But mine may be the only tapes of these broadcasts that have survived all these years..who knows??
Thanks and have fun listening! And thank you John for the laughs!
    Billy G.
(DJ on KAYE, KXVQ, KWPR, KSGL, KHYM, KEGG, KWRD/KGRI, and KKTX)
