  • WLS 89 Chicago - Larry Lujack - September 11, 1979
Chicago’s 89 WLS had so many legendary personalities that grace the microphones there. Fred Winston, John Records Landecker, Tommy Edwards, Jeff Davis, and may others. But for many WLS fans, there was one name that was above all others. Super Jock, Uncle Lar. Yes, the one & only Larry Lujack.
Moving from Seattele’s KJR in 1967, Larry landed an evening shift at WCFL Chicago, beginning a relationship with the midwest that would last for decades!
Larry crusty & cantankerousness, and the listeners loved it! Lujack influenced many present-day radio personalities, like Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern.
Larry bounced back & forth between WCFL & WLS, until 1976, when he made WLS his home. He spent many years waking Chicago every morning, until 1987 when he moved to New Mexico.
After 2000, Uncle Lar returned to the airwaves for a few years on WRLL.
Larry Lujack was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2004. He was one of a kind.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008!
One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well.
You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!
We also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also! Find me on Facebook: / ellisairchecks

This has a special meaning for me. Not only is my favorite DJ of all time, but this particular show was from my 22nd birthday! Keep up the great work!

This was when WLS sounded worth a damn, my opinion, I grew up to the station. Seems like as we got into the 80s, more talk in the morning, less music. Of course, that was going on everywhere, down to small market/small town radio. I'm glad I retired or semi retired out of terrestrial radio after 40 years. Larry Lujack had it goin' on, period. 😎

I was late for school so many times because I stayed at home to hear Uncle Larry a little Tommy do Animal Stories.

Nobody showcased a jingle package like WLS. Those Jam jingles were great. I was a big fan of airchecks by John 'Records' Landecker.

I used to listen to WLS and Lujack and his animal stories bit while dressing for school in MIssissippi while it was still dark outside.

In 1983 i bought a Panasonic am/fm radio and i noticed how well it picked up distant radio stations. In early 1984 i received WLS for the first time from my house in Central California. While working at a local radio station one of my co-workers mentioned Larry Lujack and from that moment, catching at least part of one of his broadcasts became a goal for me.
It became a reality in December of 1984. I have the aircheck on cassette

1975 you could hear Uncle Larry all over the tri-state area. Working people unite in that music and you had to listen! When we moved from Michigan to Virginia we still got him from all the way from Chicago at 6am est and fade with the sunrise.
You are the radio tradition guru Ellis! Very glad to hear the great work you have done. You have a great range of golden radio offerings, so I thank you in advance of my listening.

Great aircheck, great radio, as good as it gets! And there's something about that AM sound, which may be low fidelity, but has its way to generate lasting theater of the mind pictures.. If I hear that same song on FM or mp3 again, ya know it is just not the same!

3:01-3:26 White Sox in the second Bill Veeck era scheduled four Teen Nights during each season from 1976 through 1980. All but one was sponsored by Musicradio 89 WLS. Note that the promoted event was labeled WLS Night as to distance it from the lone exception which was sponsored by WLUP-FM 97.9 from two month prior on Thursday, July 12, 1979.

Man, I was looking forward to hearing snippets of the songs those ladies requested! Interesting, they were all women who called, didn't guys ever call in?! Thumbs up mate!👍

94.7 WDAI (in reality and today WLS-FM) was running an aling disco format. Steve Dahl and his partner Gary Meier had killed disco in Wrigley Park for Chicago, and it put a toll on the format, except for then 92.3 WKTU in New York City, where it lived on, and the great Dan Ingram work at 92 WKTU before the House Music/Disco/Hot AC Dance Format was dropped forever. All WLS-AM is now good for is if this country has a National Emergency and Analog AM will probably be the only thing left, I guess.

Brazil, São Paulo, Butantã. Good night, okay Mr. Feaster? I really liked your channel, I just signed up. I would like if it is possible to recommend to me some radios that played Funk, Soul, 60.70, 80s from the U.S.A. Thank you very much, a big hug and stay with God!!!

Hi Pedro. There a not a lot of stations that play 60s & 70s anymore, but you can try WDAS-FM Philadelphia, WDIA Memphis, & WBLS New York. You might also try Retro Soul Radio in London, England.

Lujack never did a lot of one-liners or fancy talk-ups (he seldom "hit the vocal" and danced all over the "posts") but they have really bound and gagged him here. Flip cards, weather, time, that's about it. "You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore. What guy wants flowers, anyway?" Typical Lujack comment but not in this format. They still let him do Animal Stories, probably due to either audience demand or thinking they needed to preserve a modicum of the old Larry. RIP, my friend.
