This brings back memories. I laid in bed as a teenager listening from Ontario Canada on a farm. Chicago was a world away...I thought it must be an incredibly cool place. It blew my mind that I could pick up a station so far away.
John's got it all! Energy, excitement talking up the songs, perfect timing, engaging with the audience, relating, teasing, along with some great pipes! Radio was truly at its very best.
Ellis, thank you so much for this. I absolutely love these ones from the latter part of the 70s when his radio voice was starting to converge with his real voice.
That call-in had some funny bits. Ok, these folks went across the spectrum with Sister Golden Hair, ABBA & A Taste of Honey, to Foghat & Blue Oyster Cult! With a splash of Grease here and there!!!😉
Experienced popularity of John Records Landecker while watching last worthless game of 1989 Chicago White Sox season v. Cleveland at Comiskey Park. Fans in left field lower deck saluted Steve Lyons by chanting "Psycho! Psycho! Ooh-ah!" mimicing Landecker's Boogie Check opening.
Media has changed so much since this era. Back then, it was OK for the audience to be equally witty as the radio hosts and to challenge them. Today, audiences are expected to be submissive, intellectually limited sheep.

WLS was one of the best stations back than & so full of personality.

Loved this as a young teen
Wow! Hearing all of those station call letters blows my mind! Haven’t heard those in 30 years.
Always enjoyed listening to JRL back in the day, still listening to him on WGN today.
I wish I could turn back time.
“Still The Same” Bob Seger on WLS is still a haunting sound.
Love it.
One of the first songs he played on his first show on CFTR in '81.
Records truly is his middle name!
One of my favorite jocks from the Top 40 era!
Landecker: "Say 'Goodnight, John.'"
The C-Kid: "Goodnight, John!"
The C-Kid was easily Boogie Check's most frequent caller.

I did notice that I seem to hear more earlier audio, or 80s audio, but not a lot from the late 70s, so I tried to post a few.
Great stuff

More fun from WLS.

01:45 ... My mother had this album. Peter Brown.
The guy won a Moped. LOL haven't heard about those in years.
YEARS!!!! He didn't exactly sound enthused...maybe he was surprised beyond words!
@@louisb5563 I noticed that too
@@louisb5563 At first he sounded like he thought it was some sort of gimmick! Then he realized it wasn't!
@@ChrisSpil I can believe that!👍🏻 "I won...a moped...really? Ok, great I've never one anything before"!
Haha, I just heard a local news story tonight about somebody having an accident on a moped! I hadn't heard about them in years either!
Night time in the South....WLS

I wonder which artist or band did that version of wild thing at 7:47 ?
This supersedes my last posting. Was that an F-bomb at 25:50?
Was than an F-bomb at 24:49?
25:48 ... obviously, WLS 89 didn't have time-delay in those days. LOL!
25:54 ... Nice comneback!

For a short time WLS and 1000 AM were sister stations. It was the early part of the century. They were both ABC-owned.
