I'm coming from using a Noctua NH-L12S, 70mm inside my Loque Ghost S1 II. I bent the heat pipes to cram it into the Ghost and it still lightly touches the side panel. So I just installed the Alpenfohn Black Ridge in my Loque Ghost S1 II and it's simply amazing.
I replaced the stock Alpenfohn Black Ridge 92mm fan with a slim Noctua 92mm (Noctua A-Series NF-A9x14) and installed slim Noctua 120mm (Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM) on the top of the CPU cooler (both fans blowing onto the motherboard) and I still have about an 8-millimeter gap between the top-mounted slim 120mm fan the side panel. It looks as if I might even be able to install a full-sized 120mm fan rather than the slim 120mm fan.
My normal CPU temps with the Noctua NH-L12S ranged between 45 to 65 degrees with an aggressively very low fan curve (lowest fan speed until 45 degrees, 50% fan speed at 65 degrees).
Using the exact same fan curve but with the Alpenfohn Black Ridge and the two Noctua fans, my temps now range from 35 to 52.
Thank you so much for making this video! I couldn't be happier with this product. It's more compact, works better, and yes I agree with you, it's a damn good looking heatsink.

PSA: The only B450/X470 board it fits is Asus Strix, if you remove the M.2 heatsink. Luckily, Alpenfohn released alternative mounting kits that should allow it to be mounted on ASRock and Gigabyte boards. They can be found at british Overclockers and german Caseking for couple of pounds/euro.
PSA 2: There are 2 versions of this cooler. The older V1 version is not being made anymore due to some manufacturing issues...you can recognize it by its matte black coating. The fixed V2 version is what's currently being sold and it has this "gunmetal/nickel black" shinier coating...
It's also the best cooler you can fit in the chinese K39 v2 case (and a couple of similar Taobao cases), which allows you to make a killer gaming system in a 4-5-4.7 liter case with an RTX 2070 ITX GPU...

I think something very important to note with this cooler is that it can block the top pci-e slot requiring your gpu to use a riser cable. Of course this isn't an issue with the Dan A4 it's designed for, but say you get the cooler in preparation for moving to a smaller case further down the line, you may not be able to use the cooler until you also have the case.

Very important note here: the noctua NF-A9x14 used in the video is 0.21 Amps but you can only purchase the NF-A9x14 0.11 Amps from retailers. The 0.21A version only comes with noctua's heatsinks. The difference can be up to 10ºC, please up this to it can be known.

Opting to keep a mid tower build will let me reuse parts like the DH-15 and PSU as well, still cool seeing whats possible when you use every inch of space available.

You need to always run it as an intake. You also need an airduct in the DAN A4, because although the distance to the side panel isn't far, the holes are too restrictive. The fan will suck recycled air from within the case without it. Just a simple taped on cardboard duct is enough. I've seen someone in the SFF forum drop 15° C with that.

Bought one of these a while ago for my SFF build, I run it in the Kolink Rocket with a 92mm slim Noctua fan under, and recently added a 120mm slim Noctua fan on top, standing the side panel of the case by a cm with some standoff posts. Looks a tad goofy, buy my R5 3600 now runs nice and cool, and boosts a bit higher as a result. Very happy that the Black Ridge is getting some recognition!

Thanks for this, just got my Black Ridge in the post and handily have a spare A9x14 I can swap out the standard fan and pop in the right way around - going in to a Raijintek Ophion (when it gets delivered) it sounds like I have the clearance to put a 120x25 on top aswell as I have a clearance of about 90mm according to the spec sheet and even with the extra fan that's still just 72mm.

It's be great if you could do an apples to apples test between the low profile coolers. Your data has too many variables to be useful at the moment with variance in fan RPM. Might be worth having a standard 120mm fan at a certain RPM used to test out all the 120mm coolers and the same with the 92mm coolers just to give a raw baseline of the difference between the base heatsinks.
    Other than that great video/shots.
(This was meant to be constructive rather than critical btw, just from an end user perspective I'd love to see which cooler unit actually performs best with fan/RPM/ambient being equal)

  • @SerialDriver
    @SerialDriver 4 года назад

looks interesting at first... but not so interesting after all, at least for my louqe ghost. The L9x65 offers pretty similar performance without the issue of fitting in biffy MB like the Aorus X570i. Could be great with the combo of A9x14 + A12x25 for temps, but I will get the same issue of noise as with the L9x65, as the fan is too close of the side panel and makes a jet wisthle noise... For aircooling the louqe ghost, the best solution for now is a slightly bent L12S, and if the fan doesnt fit like on the X570i, you swap it for a A9x14, so you get a custom made L12 non S. And you can use the original fan as a case fan.

The taller NH-L12 Ghost edition also fits in this case with the A12x25 fan on top with enough space from the case top panel to eliminate any turbulence noise.

Nice cooler, but unfortunately it has a design flaw that makes using it with a 120mm Noctua fan a literal headache: the standoffs for the stock 92mm fan are too long so when using a 120mm fan the blades can hit them and cause a clacking/rattling sound. I don't know if it's just mine since I don't see anyone else complaining about it, but I had to cut them off and grind them down using a dremel. It's finally silent after doing that though.

Didn't do the research and bought this cooler for Asus Z390-I Strix.. wont fit because of massive VRM "heatsink". Filed ~5mm away from the cooler corner to make it fit. Also G.Skill Ripjaws heat spreaders wont fit under this cooler so had to tear them apart. In Sliger SM550 there is no room for top cooler so at some point have to find some vlp ram and slim 120mm under the cooler..

I wish you would have shown a GPU mounted to the Motherboard because from what it looked like in this video was that CPU cooler covered the PCIe slot. If so then that too would limit the type of case and mean that you would need a PCIe Riser cable.

Do you think motherboard manufacturers or aftermarket companies offering custom fin design VRM cooling solutions would help solve this? A super beefy version of this (with fin cutouts for Ram clearance) designed only for a pull configuration would make this thing an "everything killer" and would be a cool solution when AMD moves APU's 7nm + Navi graphics, as motherboard designers might not need the exra PCIE x16 slot, or that slot could be used with an IO card to add extra PCIE devices and NVME.

I’m not a doctor, but it seems that you could conceivably cool a 3900x if you combined it with ULP memory and a 120mm fan. Would be very curious to see how that combo would work and what kind of temps you would get. Maybe the boost clocks would get clobbered but I think you could get at/above 4ghz

I’m not willing to avoid warrantees by delidding a brand new $400 plus CPU, And Noctua fixed my aesthetic problems I finally releasing the NH - L9i in black. That paired with a duct should cool something like a 3700x or 9700 (non k) in my new Dan A4 without any issue, which is better performance per dollar anyway for someone like me why doesn’t need more than 8 cores

Comparing some charts on your other videos, it seems like this cooler out performs some 92mm AIO coolers by about 7.6 degrees at 500rpm lower and some 120mm AIO by 16.2 degrees at only 150rpm more, all while being only 0.3dBA higher but at 100rpm lower. But they're was no noise test for the dual noctua fan set up so I'm unsure how quiet that would be.

I have a total empty space of 82mm. The mb is going to be mounted upside down to save as much space as I can. The CPU fan will probably be the only fan in the system. I plan to cool a R5 3600. I love the BS3, I'm also a big fan of Noctua. Exotic things don't scare me. What would you pick? Samuel 17 with a fitting A12, BS3, L12S or Black Ridge + A9 & A12? Since the fan it's going upside down and act as intake I can trim a bit of space from this case (Nintendo NES 8 bit Mattel).

The base of the cooler (where it meets the IHS) is painted black. I would think this would affect thermal transfer from the IHS and into the cooler drastically. I wonder if sanding this with high grit would improve performance. Not that I am planning to do that but I am curios...

waiting on my mine im setting it up with 2 noctua fans for my ghost. im going to try putting the 2500 rpm 92mm fan on one of the low noise adapters noctua has, it says it lowers its rpm by about 30%, to match the 1850 rpm of the 120mm fan more evenly then connecting both those with a y cable to the cpu header. that should balance the noise and airflow

@@Zakariat89 I actually Already bought and installed it.
I arrives earlier today, and it was not exactly a cakewalk to install. Had to rip the heatsink of both RAM and m.2 ssd (asus x470-i mobo, if surious), but at the end of the dat, I got it installed, including a 120 noctua 15mm (i think).
As it happens, the cooler is pretty much the same height as the Big Shuriken 2 Rev. B, which I was using before, using a horrible homemade conversion solution, although there's less room below, and it's positioned differently.
Only issue right now is that I now have 2 CPU fans, one of which has to be considered a case fan, and I'm not really sure how to best handle that.
Still, while the noise it constant, it is pretty low and I have yet to hear any ramping up, as I did before, so cooling is most certainly better.
The case I'm using is the silverstone milo ml01, again, if curious, and I'd say thinks are looking up.
