  • As an Ode to Autumn it is a perfect time to stroll your favorite forest, park, or your own backyard and admire the changing leaves. Pick up a hand or basket full and join me on an eco dye journey with a tiny twist of infusing some added color into your paper prints! Full tutorial start to finish of this simple process with stunning results!
    Supply List:
    Eco Dyeing by Sandy Babb
    Supplies:
    *Paper of your choice (copy, watercolor, mixed media, lightweight cardstock, khadi, etc.)
    medium weight papers hold up best in the boiling process (I used standard 8 1/2 x11 paper size)
    *Construction Paper (cheap dollar store brand)
    *2 Heavy Cardboard, Thin Wood Panels or Tiles the size of your paper choice
    *Scissor
    *Natural fiber rope or twine
    *Alum Powder (Found in the baking aisle in the grocery store or large supply on Amazon)
    *Spray Bottle
    *Warm Water
    *Spoon
    *Funnel if needed
    *Protective Gloves
    *Old Hand Towel
    *Mordant (I used old rusty iron bits)
    *3 Tea Bags (optional, I use Family Size)
    *Weights (I used rocks)
    *Lidded Pan large enough to hold paper bundle and deep enough to submerge bundle
    *Old Towels to dry Prints on overnight
    *Controlled Heat Source (stove, camp stove, grill, induction burner, electric burners, etc)
    Warnings:
    Any equipment you use during this process is no longer food safe. Research and be
    knowledgeable about the plants you choose to process, some are toxic, so be safe. Only
    process in a well ventilated area, if you have allergies I suggest you process with an outside
    cooking source vs in your kitchen. This technique is not suitable for children, chemicals and
    boiling water are used and should be carefully handled.

    Just watched your tutorial Sandy…very well done..l’m going to try your method. I purchased a electric roaster oven/Pot at the thrift store for 12 dollars. I do Eco dyeing of cloth in it on the deck. What’s nice about it is, l can set the temperature to what ever temp l want and it’s nice and deep and has length to it as well.
    Thanks for sharing…l love the construction paper idea ❤️👍😃

    I just found you via this tutorial. I really enjoyed this and found it very inspiring. I'm now searching and gathering the pots etc and getting ready to try it out myself. My alum arrived yesterday. I heard you mention something about sun dying flower blossoms. I'd really love to see a demo of your method. I couldn't find it in your videos or maybe I missed it? Or maybe you might consider doing an demo video on that method (or more of some of your other methods). You just do a great job of explaining and keeping things simple while staying effective. Thanks you so much. I am looking forward to trying this great method out very soon

    I have never used color construction paper however thank you for introducing that! I will definitely do it! Also the tea addition. One thing I do is rinse from the stack, that way you have a little more stability behind the one you are rinsing. I am on the west coast so have some different varieties than you, still interesting and beautiful! Thank you for the video.

    My Grandkids do this with me and love it… India Flint was the first and instigator of Eco printing. Love her book and have been using for year since it was first published.
    I do worry that the colour pigments in construction paper are not very echo friendly. Do you know how it is made?

    • @sandybabb8313
      @sandybabb8313  Год назад

      Construction paper is made from shredded wood pulp and water mixed to a thick paste consistency then recycled paper and dye are added and paper sheets are formed. From what I can gather some colorants are synthetic and some are organic. I guess it would be up to the individual to determine if they would choose to use it or not. Some artists are purist and want totally organic compounds and some are not. I guess one would need to research the labels to determine what type of dyes were used. I do not over worry much over paper items as no matter how organic or acid free a paper is over time it will deteriorate. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for viewing.

    Did you ironed papers after drying them? And what do you mean by "processed these " ?

    • @sandybabb8313
      @sandybabb8313  Год назад

      Yes I ironed the paper with a warm dry iron after they completely air dried. Can you tell me which portion of the video where I mentioned “processed these” so I can reference back to it? It has been a while ago that I made the video, I will review to see what I said.

    What exactly IS construction paper?

    • @sandybabb8313
      @sandybabb8313  Год назад +1

      Construction paper, here in the US, is considered a children’s art paper and is used widely in younger grades of schools. It is a thick brightly dyed paper made from wood pulp, water, recycled paper, and synthetic or organic dye. It is usually not color fast and will over time fade and when really old become brittle. Crayola markets a premium brand but there are many brands and for this experiment I used a cheap off brand from a dollar store. To help with preserving it after dyeing and drying before use in page binding I would recommend coating pages with a sealant. If you google “construction paper” or look on Amazon you will find many options.
