- This is my Iron Maiden Concert Review from their concert in Praha 2023 on The Future Past tour. Iron Maiden played in O2 Arena in Prague and this is my full review and reaction. How was the setlist? How was the band? Can Bruce Dickinson still sing, is Nicko McBrain a good drummer and more.
Thanks for your review! They sounded fantastic when I saw them (including Nicko) but I agree about the set list. There were lots of people in the crowd clearly expecting more of the bigger songs. I loved that they played deeper cuts, but they should have placed them more carefully between the classics. I don't think the opener was right either. Even Stratego would have been a better choice. When I say them first, they opened with Wickerman and that was a great choice.
Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience, I just saw Nicko's statement today that he had a stroke around new years. So I have to say that in the light of that his performance was amazing!
I’ve watched your videos and Nick is making sure the tempos are bang on for H, there’s too many fans want the tempos of maiden England when they sorted that after the reunion , he sounds really good to my ears and age appropriate .
It just felt so different from last years concert and from what I hear from others who where there they felt the same. Maybe there was some tech problem or something.
Very enjoyable and balanced review. Thank you!
Thanks for watching Jeff.
Something is definitely really off about Nicko's drumming. It's very unusual? I saw both legs of legacy of the beast tour, and his drumming was fantastic. I don't know what is up? But possibly health related? I don't know? It's sad though, as he is such a legend.
Yes I was playing with that idea in my head because they did not show him a lot, almost not at all and he was off as soon as the gig finished. Maybe he had some issue.
Nicko will be 71 years old this summer. He's had arthritis in his hands and wrists for years now. Plus he recently underwent treatment for cancer. So it's safe to say he's not feeling 100 percent. If he needs to take some shortcuts to get through the set (their most challenging set they've done in some years) I don' t have a problem with it. Father Time will catch up to us all eventually, folks.
@@ironlurker age comes to us all.
nicko had a stroke in january. the fact that he's even still playing is incredible
@@metalandrockzone nicko had a stroke in january....the fact that he's playing at all is crazy. harris is just more sloppy as he gets older.
Unfortunately, many songs sounded "empty" and I think it was because of the drumming. I love Nicko and I hope its just a temporary situation he is working to fix for the next concerts. If not, I dont know if he will manage to complete the tour. Anyway, I will be there when they come to Brazil. We never know if it will be the last gig.
an additional note: I felt Bruce was also slow and distant
Thanks for watching, I felt Bruce was good but he just didnt get the crowd so the energy was off and i felt it was hard for him to sing on the slowed down versions. With Nicko I am starting to think he just has the flu or something, I saw them last summer and he was on fire.
@@metalandrockzone I hope so! Cheers!
They gotta hang it up man, Bruce can’t sing anymore , Nikko 70. it’s just not there anymore , it’s not 1985, retire with some Grace, don’t do a money grab
If Niko is sick, then he needs to get better!...maiden is a single mechanism, a well-coordinated machine.....it cannot be stopped, not now!
Yes I hope it gets better
You hit the nail on the head about liking the Senjutsu album when you listen to it continuously. I can put that album on and listen to it from start to finish and get lost in it. Keeps you in the same frame of mind through the whole album. As for the mistakes on stage for the first handful of concerts, it's difficult to catch these when you watch/listen on live video, especially when you are a huge fan and your blind faith makes you listen a little differently. :) But yes, they are definitely noticeable. I hope they get these issues ironed out as the tour progresses. My only suggestion for the set list, replace Death of the Celts with the Parchment (If 5 Senjutsu songs are mandated). Nice work, sir. I enjoyed this. Honest opinion from a real fan.
Thanks for watching James. Actually the suggestion to put the Parchment in there is a good one, I like that song.
Definately Parchment instead of Death of the Celts.
I was at the concert. Unreal experience. Somewhere in Time is IM's best album. I was thrilled with Bruce's voice, I was thrilled with Adrian's solos, and Dave was great too. Unfortunately, Jannick seems a bit useless to me. Perfect stage and backdrops. I was disappointed with Nick, unfortunately you are right. Those drums were very tired and slower. And I only heard one whore. You are right that people were not so excited. It was necessary to give the second song, for example, Run to the Hills. But otherwise I have no reservations. A perfect concert and the icing on the cake was Alexander, seeing that song live is an absolute rare moment. 8.5 for me.
Better perspective than the old woman reviewer.. I guess he's just a fair weather fan... most real fans would kill to see Alexander and CSiT... I know I would ❤ omg CSiT!!! Better not die before they come to NZ on the tour
Thanks for watching Pavel. I think they could have turned this into a much better gig bye doing as you say, add Run To the hills or something and move one of those classics to earlier in the setlist. The drumming just does so much for this band that when it is off it takes the bottom out somehow.
Yes i love good weather like most people. Thanks for watching.
@@metalandrockzone ..WALK TO THE HILLS 😋😛
Yeah the first shows are a bit rough. Nicko indeed based on the clips is cutting fills or even not playing certain fills at all
Totally, it was super strange and I haven't seen him this way before. Thanks for watching,
I'm worried about Nicko... Had a lot of change on his way to play on this first two shows compared to last year. I hope he gets better soon!!
Yes I agree. Thanks for watching
You can also see the drum set i pretty scaled down compared to last year. Also last year i noticed the slowed down Run To The Hills and Aces High, which sounded strange to me. So i feel it almost began last year and got worse now this year
Exactly the same amount of drums and same sizes as he has always played.
I think the drums are pretty much the same size and set up as usual, but I totally agree that since the last years "legacy of the beast tour" tempos have slowed down significantly, but this year is even more apparent.. + timing errors, missing drum fills, cymbal crashes etc
Thanks for watching, I did not notice it last year so much, the slow down. But maybe the energy level was different because last year I felt they loved it on the stage and the crowd felt it.
Drum kit is not scaled down one bit. Exactly the same amount of drums and cymbals.
@@metalandrockzone That could be, i’ve watched the second night in Prague now and i actually think Nicko is much better here
For most tours the machine needs to warm up and get fully going for any tour before everything clicks. But from watching clips from both Ljubljana and Prague I'm somehow left with the sense that something is really off in the Maiden camp. Looking at stage presence, and more visibly the interaction between band members on stage, especially Steve. I'm somehow left with he feeling none of them seem to be enjoying being there. That's maybe more common at the end of a long tour, but these are the opening nights of the tour. I saw Maiden on the closing night of the Seventh Son tour and it wasn't difficult to see and understand that they were tired and had enough of each other, and that's normal for most touring bands. I also saw the opening night of Fear of the Dark when things weren't so good within the band, especially between Bruce and Steve, but they were on fire from start to finish.
Still, loads of respect and admiration for Maiden. To pull these shows off at their age is an impressive feat.
Yes the chemistry just wasnt there I agree and of course they need time to click but a band of this reputation and magnitude should come out all guns blazing. Thanks for watching.
@@metalandrockzone I met the band at Nicko's birthday party after the opening night on Fear of the Dark, both Bruce and Steve were in a really pissy mood after the show. However you would never have known that from their performance earlier in the evening, the strain between them as left behind the minute they walked on stage and they came out guns blazing and gave it everything they had. That doesn't seem to be the case here. Real shame. I hope things smooth out as the tour gets going.
If you cant understand the english thats not Bruce fault blame your education system. Adrian was annoyed after the concert in Ljubljana some tech issues that pissed him off so with a bit of luck theyll fix that as the tour goes along. Dont compare with the drummers from Saxon and Whitesnake we are all different and age is a bitch, Nicko on the other hand will always be Number one drummer!
🤟
I'm a pure NICKO fanatic since 1985 and i NEVER HEARD him playing slow..without bombastics fills and imagination like the 3 new shows of this years... Nicko play so simple with dull drum without bass-drum groove galloping... NEVER heard Prisoner and Trooper boring like these 3 first concert... someone tell to Nicko to be boring ??!!!!.... The first show okay.. it possible that Nicko was sick or very nervous but after seeing him play Trooper 3 time with same result i don't know what to think... Today i think i'm better than Nicko on drum.. for the speed and passion.....
No totally agree, there is something very off there. I just hope it will improve. Thanks for watching.
I think the senjutsu songs are difficult to place separately in gig, i thought when the album was released they would have done a tour similar to a matter of life and death and played the album in full. I also saw a few different videos of the opening gig, not sure which one it was but on a few songs I thought Nicko was off too, certainly on writing on the wall where they went a bit crazy with the tempo! Seeing them in July and can’t wait 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Ps greetings from the U.K. 🤘🏻
Thanks for watching Philip Bailey, you are not by any chance the Philip Bailey that made "easy lover" with Phil Collins? That would be legendary! I agree with Senjutsu, it is best consumed in its entirety somehow. They played two nights here in Prague in a row and from what I hear from those who attended the second gig then it was much better than the first one. I am sure that by July they will have gotten tighter and more routined in their performance and even have swapped out some songs or changed the order. Enjoy
@@metalandrockzone unfortunately not, nor was I in Earth Wind and Fire 😅😂 I did wonder if they may document this tour as part of the history of iron maiden series they did a few years back as it seemed to stop when they re-released maiden England. There is Still a serious lack of official Somewhere in Time footage/performances! This tour would also benefit from a (another!) live album with the current set list
yes I am sure that they will document this later for this exact reason. people would buy any Somewhere in time themed live stuff
I'm not surprise about the legend Nicko, he will turn 71 next week. Is like a grandpa trying to perform Nicko's badass gallop kick drum from the eighties and 2000s. He is an old man now.
Yes but there are older drummers out there still doing a great job, there was something very weird going on there with the drumming. Thanks for watching
The other drummers he mentioned don't play half as complex abd intricate as Mc Brain.. Tommy Aldridge lol.. give me a break
@@wahwahgaboor Seriously? I mean, I love Nicko more than Tommy but Tommy's performance is better and not off compared to Nicko currently. That being said, Nicko is still a legend and hopefully he gets well and better if his sick or not feeling well ✌️
Musicians always say that if the drums aren't played the way they should, the rhythm section fails... and then it doesn't matter how good the guitarists are :( However, I love Iron Maiden for what they have done for the world of music 💪 they have my undying respect🤘
Yes they have all my respect, one of my all time favourite bands and nothing will change that. But that night there something was really really badly off. Thanks for watching.
the tempo thing is happening since at aleast 5 years now cause ive senn them live in 2018, they ve said it themselves some years now that in the past years the rushed the songs tempo wise and the wanted to give some ''air'' to the classics but apart from that the thing with missing breaks etc is strange..with the rest u said more or so i agree, Dickinson was like not knowing how to stage himself in front of the audience, maybe was a bit embarrassed with the mistakes on stage and wanted to compensate somehow,, but i think main problem are the drums
yes I guess when they feel that there is something off in the playing then they struggle with the rest of it so maybe Bruce was off because of that with the crowd. Thanks for watching.
"When i can't rock this band I'll stop... " I love Nicko to bits but I'm sorry to say he can't anymore... I can't see the other members straight up tell him, they love him too much, but the "little looks" you catch them giving him during the shows, due to all the mistakes he makes, tell the whole story... He completely ignores the cool drum patterns before the CSIT solo sections, which elevates the whole song and the tempo in songs like "Heaven Can Wait", "The Prisoner" etc were almost comical .. And I completely agree that speeding things up would help Bruce's vocals being more speechy and take less effort, than having to project all the time to cover the now longer musical passages due to the tempo slow-downs...
Thanks for watching, yes there is something very much missing there in the drum section and it really affects them, it spills over to Steve also. Maybe Nicko is sick or something like that, I saw them last summer and this was so far away from that.
You've gotta cut the band some slack - they have a combined age totalling *399 years* ! 😳
Hahahahaha yes that is indeed a very high number! But I just have such high standards when it comes to these bands that have been around this long. They should hit the ground running.
For me my biggest worry is in regards to Nicko hes not playing like he used to do and i wonder if he's sick or something... hope he gets better.
Yes I have the same feeling. Thanks for watching
Totally agree with all of your comments, something defo wrong with the drumming, simplified fills and simple bass drum patterns. You can't even see him and wouldn't be surprised if it was his drum tech playing and not Nicko
I actually thought that for a while that someone else was playing but then I saw him on camera 2-3 times. But not a wild theory to be honest
I have to agree becase I also felt that something was off during the 1st night in Prague. The energy that we used to in the Iron Maiden concerts was not there 100%. I was also at Sinobo Stadium last year and it was like a completely different band considering that was only 11 months ago!
Yes I was there in Sinobo also and totally agree, this was like another band. But I spoke to one guy that pointed out also that in O2 the sound can often be really bad and that is true, I have seen some really great bands there having really bad performances, Slipknot some 5-6 years ago was awful there, Kiss in 2015 I think also. So maybe that combined with the drumming being bad, the chemistry in the band and to the crowd made this all a night to forget! Thanks for watching.
@@metalandrockzone Although im not a sound expert, I saw Kiss and Helloween in O2 Arena last year and i really enjoyed them both, especially Kiss! I really don't know what went wrong with Iron Maiden. Anyway looking forward to a great show by Deff Leppard & Motley Crue tonight! 🤘🤘
Yes I am going to Prague Rocks also! Enjoy, will record my review tomorrow morning!
@@metalandrockzone Nice! Can't wait to see the review! 🤘🤘
It takes about 3 to 5 shows to get a Rock Band into the groove. As one who had been to 500 concerts or so in my 70 years of living. Saw bands on their first show, middle shows and toward the end, it all changes and most get better and better as the tour goes on.
Totally agree Louis, I did 70 gigs last year and I saw the whole rainbow but there was just something very off there last night even though it pains me to say it is I love this band. Thanks for watching.
Maybe they should rehearse more then because if people are paying 120 euros for a concert they deserve better.
A band like this must prepare for a tour for some time, I wouldnt believe anything else
@@metalandrockzone Yes sir. Keep up the great work. I will try to catch them here in Houston, Texas on their tour.
🤘
i'm seeing this show in ten days. i won't be surprised if they drop some of the senjitsu materiel and replace with a couple of chestnuts for the north american audience...the 3 canadian shows are warm ups for power trip festival which is more than likely also being filmed for a dvd. i can't believe i'm saying this, but bruce probably should say fuck a lot less.....he's a grown ass man and doesn't need to try sound like he's in his early 20s.
Thanks for watching. It might make sense they change the setlist a bit now for Power Trip, i would have loved to go and see that festival! But hope you are right and it will be released in some form. Enjoy the concert 🤘
This is why it was so foolish of them to ignore this era of the band for so long. They should have immediately made plans post "The Final Frontier" or concurrent to that tour to include playing these songs at the studio tempos the way they were made to be heard. And that was over 10 year years ago. Never made sense to me for them to skip over it just to do "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son" retro tour. Now age has caught up to many of them. Shame. Hopefully it's just a little rust from not playing some of these songs in decades but I'm not sure. Worst comes to worst, have Nicko take a health leave and have a younger drummer finish the tour.
Hi, thanks for watching. I really hope it is rust, I saw them last summer and I didn't notice this there. And yes told my friend here this morning that maybe Nicko should just take a break...it is not something I expected from Iron Maiden that they would get to this sort of performance because I saw them so many times and it was always amazing.
I will disagree somewhat. I think it's daring that Maiden are going with a setlist that they know might not please fans who "want to hear the hits." I think this tour *should* appeal less to a general fanbase and more to "diehards." Eventually, Iron Maiden had to thank and satisfy "the diehards" and not only "the casuals." I love Aces High but they have leaned heavy on the same songs for the last 10 years or so, I feel.
I noticed that when Alexander the Great starts at these shows, the crowd is dead from the footage I have seen. I don't understand why? Do the fans not know the song? Were there not as many "diehards" in these crowds? Hard to tell from the footage. Here in Chicago, I will be screaming my ass off when I hear that intro start. Also, what do you make of Bruce not "running" anymore? He used to run around all the time. Now, he seems stationary? I also noticed that he seems not to run along the top platform of the stage nearly as much. Do you think this is because of the stage show and the new pyrotechnics being too dangerous? Or do you think Bruce has aged in that regard? His signing is still fantastic, but I felt like a stationary Bruce Dickinson doesn't have the effect on the crowd, and I have noticed this since the first Senjutsu shows.
Thanks for watching, I think you have a valid point on making a show for the die hards but on the other hand I also think that by mixing it slightly more up the order of the songs they would have gotten the crowd better. Bruce ran all over last year when I saw him but this setup that they have now is much smaller and funnily me and my friend who was there were both a bit worried that this structure would fall and he would get injured, maybe he thought the same! But the overall vibe in the band just wasnt there somehow so maybe there is some tiredness or something like that. When he moved there it did not look like he had any problem with it and his singing was spot on. thanks for wathcing.
Skip death of the Celts! And I liked you so far!
sorry!
I personally lived the set list and the whole show. However, I do agree that Nicko was off, he seemed to be sluggish and have simplified the beats somewhat as well. I also agree the crowd wasn't great. I feel like maiden have another 10 years, I'm just worried that Nicko may not
Yes maybe we are nearing the end for Nicko. Dont get me wrong I respect and like thee setlist but just think they could have mixed it up a bit better to get better crowd atmosphere. Thanks for watching.
Hopefully Nicko gets 'match fit' ..and gets into the groove.. he's missed a lot of fills and cymbal crashes just focusing on getting the beat right.
Yes that might be what will happen, I really hope so as this was not easy to watch last night

Yeahhh
Poor nicko, you can tell he isn't able for it anymore.. he's struggling and he even said that he is worried about his drumming capabilites this tour because of his age. I think this is the last tour.
yes but people also told me that on night two in Prague he did better, maybe he is just rusty now.
@@metalandrockzone when he plays the trooper he doesn't even play the drum fill leading into the main riff anymore. He's not able for it. It's unfortunate but sadly it's just a fact that nicko is getting old. I wish it wasn't true but it is. He has played the drums the same every night for the trooper, even in Bergen Norway he played the same
yes maybe this is how it will end unfortunately
@@metalandrockzone sadly I think so. Maiden won't replace nicko, even if it's for a few years. I will be devastated when it happens. I've been worried about maiden retiring since 2008. The time is near and I'm still not ready for it
Attended this Iron Maiden concert. Not my usual taste, but it was well-organized, with dedicated fans having a blast. Personally, didn't recognize any tunes and felt like leaving. The stage, decor, and imagery were dull, and the lead singer focused more on outfit changes than driving the momentum. Too many unnecessary stops and swearing. However, the energy of fellow fans was infectious, with one guy next to me air drumming and loving every minute. A mixed experience overall.
Thanks for watching Stefan and for your honest words on your experience. What is your favourite metal band if any?

Joke! I’m in the Metallica Family. Thanks for asking, Almar!
It seems that Nicko's drum kit is smaller and doesn't reach the genuine sound that we are used to. There were songs in Ljubljana and Prague that for me didn't sound to Maiden, and definitely it was a lack of punch in the drum kit. Nicko is 71 by the way. Maybe he is not able to achieve his usual performance anymore.
Well of course he ages like everyone else but I saw him last year and it was not the same, then it was great, now there was something really off. I just hope he is ok. Thanks for watching.
You are comparing the first show of the tour to like a tour that they done like three runs of
Thanks for watching, I say that at the end, it is a small sample size but it just was not up to standard. I am not sure what exactly it was and I hope it was some technical thing.
I am a fan of Maiden for 25 years... I just can't relate to their new stuff, BNW was the last album I truly liked. I really tried to like Senjutsu but it just doesn't click. Also their artwork is so horrible nowadays.... I'll never understand why they let Derek Riggs go
I agree, there are not many great songs in recent years. I like The Writing on the Wall though and Hell on Earth of Senjutsu. Thanks for watching.
For me and my friends it was all over when somewhere in Time came out. before that Maiden was on fire and the shows were absolutely incredible. You can see us front row wearing a Eddie mask in the live after death DVD. That was the Maiden I liked

🤘
I said before the tour Nicko and Dave will retire after the tour.
Yes I think that is highly likely, at least Nicko
I don't agree. You are not objective. At this age, you can't judge musicians even between seasons. Go listen to Charlie Watts if you can... That's why we have electronic media to listen surgically precise recordings ... and we have concerts where you can smell the sweat and the ambience. At least that's why I go to concerts. If I were judging quality and mood, I wouldn't go to any. I was in Ljubljana and was in the stands, so I also saw some of the backstage. Bruce kept rising his hands in the background every time as he couldn't hear anything what he singing on the monitors... I saw Bruce who forgot the lyrics ... I saw Adrian in bad mood BUT I also heard Alexander the Great live for the first time in history ... these are the moments that stay and mean something. And I don't regret a cent for the ticket, I also bought a t-shirt for €45 (not one but two - also for my dauther who is also Iron Maiden fan) and will wear it on special occasions. THESE are the moments in life worth living for and experiencing Iron Maiden... and when they come again, I'll go again, and again...
Hi, thanks for watching. I have seen this band a lot of times, this was an exceptional gig, I have never seen them anywhere near this, it was not just the drums etc. I just didnt feel like they even wanted to be there. I will continue to see Iron Maiden every time that I can until they call it a day. But I have to be honest to myself and give my personal feeling for each concert that I review. But fair points, they are human and all that but this gig in Prague just wasn't a good one.
Personally i felt that they should have called it a day after The book of souls. That tour was brilliant. They would have been going out at the top. Sadly they are going on too long and its starting to show.
Just met a guy who saw both nights here in Prague, he said that the second night was way better. So maybe they are getting a bit more tighter as it goes.
This is a money grab. Bruce has been done for years. They gotta call it. It’s getting embarrassing. Last Rush show was perfection. Drummers can’t go past 65 in heavy fast progressive rock
Imho they should completely skip the so called live classics or replace them with more new stuff or songs they rarely or never play: Rime of the Ancient Mariner, If Eternity Should Fail, Moonchild, 7th Son, 22 Accacia Avenue to name a few.
I would have loved to see these songs you mention. But I think to get the crowd going in a 20.000 arena they have to have some of the classics, alternatively they could scale it down and go for the die hard fans only and have maybe 10.000 ppl.
@@metalandrockzone I'm well aware of that. This is only my humble wish😉
Iam sad to say that on last video with Nicko introduce his new drums he make many mistakes. Even he forgot his new drum heads ... On three concerts now i see a different Nicko. Many mistakes and simple rythms
yes there is unfortunately something very wrong there now. I saw then last summer and it was so much better. I really hope it will improve. Thanks for watching.
There is nothing wrong it’s simply called life. I’m 59 I’ve been playing drums since 12 years old and used to play for four hours no problem, now it’s two hours and it hurts after, I can’t imagine being seventy years old and trying to play a show. only thing wrong is they keep going for these huge shows.
I wonder if nickos' cancer is back...
I really hope it is not something like that. Thanks for watching.
