Brilliant idea and solid build. A simple solution for a complex problem. One remark: I strongly recommend black and red wire for the DC input and output. As an electronics engineer, I often enough supplied the wrong polarity. Of course, my own stupidity, but colors help to prevent it. And other note: You can desolder the potentiometers from the DC/DC regulator and mount bigger, nicer ones lets say in a box, wire it up and put it on your table. off course, the pcb potentiometers have their safety feature of "not accidentally changing", but at the same time, readjusting them during an experiment can be hazard as the screw driver might short out the circuit or accidentally turning the wrong direction. (but short circuiting the circuit could also be prevented by simply using a plastic blade/trimmer instead of a metal screw driver),
sarowie Very true, and very good ideas. I'm planning on making an "advanced Electrolysis box" in a few months or so that also allows capturing of useful gases or even feeding in reactive gasses (which is awesome for fuel cell experiments). I'll see if i remember to incorporate your suggestions :)
NurdRage the potentiometers on the regulatory are 10 turn so if using external pots either use a bigger 10 turn one or two different values for fine and coarse adjustments.
+NurdRage Wait, can't the current one also capture useful gases? I mean, I could see myself generating say, hydrogen/oxygen in one and piping it over to a blowtorch or experiment. I guess you mean SEPARATE useful gases by electrode, which could indeed be very useful.

Excellent video as usual. The simple way you convey your ideas illustrates a firm understanding of principles. I plan on creating one of these, but simply as a mini, self-contained fume hood.
SUGGESTION: what you created is a perfect calm chamber where gases will stratify. Therefore your aspiration line should be put at the extreme top of the tank to vent idrogen (very common byproduct of every electrolysis) AND at the extreme bottom of the tank to vent clorine and similiar heavier alogens. You are a chemist, so I will not waste your time explaining the huge difference between what thermodynamics says about mixing gases and what in reality you will get. ciao
GiGaHarrySfotter The box is not perfectly calm. The lid leaks inward as much as the pump can pump it out. The turbulent entry of air mixes the gasses quite a bit. Nonetheless, as is said at the end of the video the box is returned to the fume hood and opened there to vent lingering gases before the experiment is observed.
Great idea, NurdRage! The PVC tubing could be led into a 'scrubber'. For example, if an electrolysis procedure produces bromine or chlorine, the tube could be led into sodium thiosulphate. For nitrogen dioxide, the scrubber would consist of sodium/potassium carbonate or hydroxide.
You could also add a digital tier module and alarm and a manual override to keep the pump running after electrolysis has finished. Also some tape on the cables so you dont get caught on them and accidentally pull them off etc. Cool idea, think i might make one!
Nicely done. I made a "fume hood" version of this a few months ago, using a larger storage tote and a 12v fan. Connected the fan to a surplus vacuum cleaner hose (likely vinyl) and then routed it into the venting from the clothes dryer where it exits the house. No blowback through the hose from the dryer, though the fan is perhaps a little anemic, so may switch to a cheap bathroom fan if my attempt at raising the voltage burns out the little guy. What is the cfm of the pump you are using?
You should check out the B3603 or the B3606 DC-DC converter for a digitally controlled converter. They are a bit more expensive than the potentiometer controlled converters but at around 12$ I find them to be a HUGE improvement if you plan to change the voltage or current limit a lot.
Have you ever considered running a bead of say silicone around your tub? If you ran it in the mating surface and let it setup and cure, you could make a gasket of sorts to seal your box even better. It's a trick used in the automotive arena for making quick and cheap custom gaskets.

Fod Woggler I would not recommend putting lithium metal in an aqueous solution for obvious safety reasons, lithium reacting violently with water. I believe elemental magnesium is made in the industry (at least in the US) by electrolysis of molten magnesium chloride (that you would have to prepare from the Epsom salt) under argon atmosphere (magnesium itself being reactive to moisture in the air, you need an inert atmosphere). You get magnesium metal at the cathode. To make things worse, magnesium chloride has a high melting point. Not really a thing that you can do in your garage easily I guess!
Fod Woggler there's not much info on google but you can separate elemental copper(very fine particles) from copper sulfate by adding ascorbic acid (vitamin C), it might work with magnesium too.
Fod Woggler generally the more reactive something is the harder it is for someone to obtain, homemade at least. Magnesium is fairly cheap and you can sometimes find large amounts of shavings for very little.
I often melt aluminium and have an installation able to produce the required temperature, I would like to know what kind of precautions I have to use to separate Na and Cl. First of, what kind of electrodes is the most appropriate? I imagine I would need to use iron, but then, what voltage would I need to make it viable? Also, with the air coming from the bottom of said installation to burn the fuel, would be there sufficient oxygen to instantly oxidize the molten magnesium?

Could there be fumes which destroy the pump mechanism? If so, it might be better to have the pump deliver fresh air into the container from one side and have the outlet tube on the other. Just make sure the lid is sealed.
Markus Birth I think he said the pump cost $6... if it dies in the process, toss it and replace it. I'd rather have a negative pressure on the box, than try to seal a positive pressure - much easier.

I have a question about water electrolysis. I want to generate more or less pure oxygen using electrolysis. Someone told me it is impossible to avoid contaminating the oxygen with some hydrogen, which will then accumulate in my tank (150 gallon at 110 psi) and probably explode at some point. (Annoying, but the tank will be far away from anyone) Other question is, what kind of efficiency can I expect out of it ? I'm going to run it continuously with my tap water and a 5 gallon salt supply which will keep the solution saturated. I don't have access to fancy polymer membranes but I have stainless steel, plastic and reasonable fabrication capabilities. How many liters of oxygen per kWh can I hope to achieve ? How many liters of oxygen per hour can I produce with a 20 gallon electrolyser ? What kind of oxygen purity can I expect ? What is the most efficient design electrolyser that can be built out of materials from a big hardware store ? How much water will the oxygen gas contain if I run the electrolyser at 20C ? I need this oxygen for feeding an oxy-acetylene torch. It doesn't have to be pure but it can't be combustible prior to mixing with acetylene, also water content would be annoying as it will eventually corrode my system.
Just a thought, If the box can handle NO2 you could connect the output of the pump to a bubbler filled with NaHCO3 and generate some NaO3 while scrubbing the air. Also, where did you get your fume hood from?
Hi, could I request a (somewhat newbie) video on copper plating? I have a project that requires it but I keep getting a blackened mess, which is odd and confusing as I've done silver and gold plating somewhat successfully in the past (with smaller quantities). Are there any reasonable generic filters for gasses? Activated carbon, with a base and acid prewash to neutralize gasses (picking neutralizing solutions to avoid anything particularly nasty)?
Robert Szasz If you had the time, money and space, then leading the gases through an acidic absorption column column, followed by a strongly basic absorption column and finally through a flame burner (to destroy flammable gases that are absorbed by neither) would pretty much handle any gas you could throw at it. The major drawback though is maintenance and cost. It's a complicated system with pumps, fluids and a host of other components. Activated carbon does work, but it will be quickly overwhelmed by the sheer volume of gases produced in a few preparatory scale electrolysis experiments.
NurdRage I guess dilution is the solution (vent outside). Though since I'm just doing plating and cleanup of copper chloride solutions from etching I only really have a bit of chlorine to deal with and some lye or baking soda in solution with an indicator is all I need. Oh and a bit of added H2O2 makes for a much nicer etch with copper chloride.
If I were to use an electrolysis box such as this, but I wanted to conduct a electrolytic reaction that produced gas and keep the gas produced by routing the diaphragm pump output to another container, how would you go about this without having said container burst/leak from the pressure exerted by the gas going inside?
nospacesWFT That critically depends on the gas. Some gases can be absorbed into solutions. Some can be liquefied and some you have to pressurize into a strong container made of a compatible material. I don't recommend this particular design for using the gas. It's far to dilute with air mixed in. I'm working on a more advanced electrolysis box that's specially designed to capture useful gases.
nospacesWFT Have a look at paintball HPA tanks, they are fairly cheap and are designed to handle high pressures, and you can easily integrate them using an ASA from a paintball marker. This is obviously assuming your gas doesn't attack the macroline or the tank itself.
so i went ahead and bought one of those DC/DC converters, and it works fine, except the amperage maxes out at 5 amps and the voltage doesn't go below 0.7... any way around it? actually, is there any way to lower the voltage to below 0.7... not the amperage.. the back of the module heated up quite a lot while i was testing its limits, so im guessing 5 amps is the max for a reason.
Unknown Actually, it's listed right on the seller page and in the title of the item that it's a 5 amp converter. It also lists the output range as being between 0.8v - 30v. There is no reason to be surprised, it sounds like it's working exactly how it's supposed to. What did you think you were buying?
i have a few question about the boxes you use. You said you use pe（polyethylene）boxes but they look a bit like pp boxes. Do pp boxes work too？ and if not can someone give me a link to good pe boxes because i looked all around the department stors in my city and they only got pp plastic boxes.

As much as i know about H20 , H2 and 02, after electrolysis , hydrogen will go up , because it's lighter than air and oxygen will be inside the electrolysis tube, because it's heavier than air, so you would need to hold, like a test tube above, but it wont be pure hydrogen, it would have some air in it, not sure how you obtain the oxygen, you could only do it when there is no water left
BK201MXP Define "relatively quickly". The hydrogen-oxygen you mentioned can be recombined with a spark, so not sure how quickly you are looking for. The bigger issue is that there aren't that many options for compounds made up of only gasses, that you could use electrolysis on that also easily combine with each other first. Maybe ammonia, unless you get into compounds containing fluorine, and no way I'd want to mess with something that reactive outside of a very well equipped lab.
Glebs Litvjaks Probably be easier to use HDPE nuts and bolts. Stainless isn't as resistant as you'd hope it would be, at least against acids, and especially if chlorine or HCL is involved.

2 ideas, 1.Rubber gasket seal on lid and rubber "o" ring around hose barb. 2. A timer could be installed and wired to shut power off.

You also need Ph & Temperature sensoring with acid auto adding if it goes too basic (PH control).
Couldn't you capture the gases in a fitting solvent, like water?
could use a pressure gage offset for negative pressure sealed lid and a one way air valve

Hi, could I request a (somewhat newbie) video on copper plating? I have a project that requires it but I keep getting a blackened mess, which is odd and confusing as I've done silver and gold plating somewhat successfully in the past (with smaller quantities). I would rather have something that doesn't involve sulfuric acid as I've wasted all of mine on other things. Any tips? Thanks :) Also I love this video. I will be making one.

Are there any reasonable generic filters for gasses? Activated carbon, with a base and acid prewash to neutralize gasses (picking neutralizing solutions to avoid anything particularly nasty)?
Robert Szasz If you had the time, money and space, then leading the gases through an acidic absorption column column, followed by a strongly basic absorption column and finally through a flame burner (to destroy flammable gases that are absorbed by neither) would pretty much handle any gas you could throw at it.
The major drawback though is maintenance and cost. It's a complicated system with pumps, fluids and a host of other components.
Activated carbon does work, but it will be quickly overwhelmed by the sheer volume of gases produced in a few preparatory scale electrolysis experiments.
NurdRage I guess dilution is the solution (vent outside). Though since I'm just doing plating and cleanup of copper chloride solutions from etching I only really have a bit of chlorine to deal with and some lye or baking soda in solution with an indicator is all I need.
Oh and a bit of added H2O2 makes for a much nicer etch with copper chloride.

If I were to use an electrolysis box such as this, but I wanted to conduct a electrolytic reaction that produced gas and keep the gas produced by routing the diaphragm pump output to another container, how would you go about this without having said container burst/leak from the pressure exerted by the gas going inside?
nospacesWFT That critically depends on the gas. Some gases can be absorbed into solutions. Some can be liquefied and some you have to pressurize into a strong container made of a compatible material.
I don't recommend this particular design for using the gas. It's far to dilute with air mixed in. I'm working on a more advanced electrolysis box that's specially designed to capture useful gases.
nospacesWFT Have a look at paintball HPA tanks, they are fairly cheap and are designed to handle high pressures, and you can easily integrate them using an ASA from a paintball marker.
This is obviously assuming your gas doesn't attack the macroline or the tank itself.
so i went ahead and bought one of those DC/DC converters, and it works fine, except the amperage maxes out at 5 amps and the voltage doesn't go below 0.7... any way around it? actually, is there any way to lower the voltage to below 0.7... not the amperage.. the back of the module heated up quite a lot while i was testing its limits, so im guessing 5 amps is the max for a reason.
Unknown Actually, it's listed right on the seller page and in the title of the item that it's a 5 amp converter. It also lists the output range as being between 0.8v - 30v. There is no reason to be surprised, it sounds like it's working exactly how it's supposed to. What did you think you were buying?

No, you only need something that has 1V of headroom.
Meaning if you want to output 14V, you ideally want at least a 15V power input.
i have a few question about the boxes you use. You said you use pe（polyethylene）boxes but they look a bit like pp boxes. Do pp boxes work too？ and if not can someone give me a link to good pe boxes because i looked all around the department stors in my city and they only got pp plastic boxes.
Yep, polypropylene (PP) works just as good. By all means use it if you have it.
NurdRage! Do you know of any electrolysis reactions that yield gasses that would relatively quickly want to recombine to their liquid state quickly? Or are easy recombined to their liquid state through another simple reaction?
I know Electrolysis of H2O yields H2 and O2. But those take too long to recombine to H2O for my needs.

As much as i know about H20 , H2 and 02, after electrolysis , hydrogen will go up , because it's lighter than air and oxygen will be inside the electrolysis tube, because it's heavier than air, so you would need to hold, like a test tube above, but it wont be pure hydrogen, it would have some air in it, not sure how you obtain the oxygen, you could only do it when there is no water left
BK201MXP Define "relatively quickly". The hydrogen-oxygen you mentioned can be recombined with a spark, so not sure how quickly you are looking for. The bigger issue is that there aren't that many options for compounds made up of only gasses, that you could use electrolysis on that also easily combine with each other first. Maybe ammonia, unless you get into compounds containing fluorine, and no way I'd want to mess with something that reactive outside of a very well equipped lab.

xtamared it depends on the reaction(s) you are planning to do and how much hazel you consider it to replace screws and nuts every now and then.
Glebs Litvjaks Probably be easier to use HDPE nuts and bolts. Stainless isn't as resistant as you'd hope it would be, at least against acids, and especially if chlorine or HCL is involved.
