      Fella, Ray Leonard is such a fucking egomaniac...Firstly, he has talked about his SECOND fight with Duran so much, his VICTORY over Duran, he's talked about it so much that most of the sporting world doesn't even know that the so-called 'No Mas' fight was their SECOND bout and not their first....Does Ray explain when on tv chat shows, being interviewed, does he go on about when he and Duran were BOTH fit...and he got his ass kicked by Duran.... I've heard people call Duran a quitter?....A QUITTER?... He was a natural LIGHTWEIGHT, and had no qualms about moving up to Middleweight in order to fight Hagler who would be fighting at his most comfortable Middleweight...and stood toe-to-toe with Marvin for 15 rounds....but Leonard on the other hand, when Hagler called him out time-after-time, and year after year, and Sugar Crafty Ray Leonard continued to postpone, pull out, refuse and then retire, only agreeing to fight Hagler practically 4 years, 4 fucking years after they should've fought, Leonard only coming out of retirement when Hagler had lost his zest and zing, looking older etc... Leonard has admitted that he agreed to give DURAN their 2nd bout, and an opportunity for a desperately needed big payday...however, in doing so, the fight would take place relatively soon, thus giving Duran just enough time to make the weight, but not giving Duran enough time to then get ring-sharp, hence Duran looking exhausted and slow etc...he wasn't embarrassed, he was ill and exhausted....Fact is, and Ray has admitted this...he could NOT beat Duran if Duran was 100 % like he was in Montreal...People say Leonard was the best cause he beat Hagler and Duran and Hearns...but Duran beat Leonard, and hurt him, Leonard didn't hurt Duran, he danced around him...yes, Ray beat Hagler but only when Hagler was rusty and older, whereas Duran fought Hagler years before when Marvin was sharp and angry and ambitious...Leonard beat Hearns but their draw in their second fight he lost....all we have to do is look at Leonard's reaction and his trainer's reaction as the bell goes, signalling the end of the fight...Apologies for the lengthy reply...I just get annoyed when Duran is mocked for supposedly quitting, people say he's a coward or a pussy etc...Duran was no pussy, turned pro at 16 years old, fought to feed his mum and numerous siblings in the slums of Panama, fought whenever, whoever, at whatever weight... remember he got in with Iran Barkley, against doctors orders, even with the boxing world expecting him to lose in the first 2/3 rounds, if that, but he won, he battled at middleweight with a prime young ruthless Barkley....Leonard out of the 4 kings was the biggest pussy...but a crafty clever pussy...giving himself big advantages way before the fight even started...peace...Duran was NOT a quitter my friend...on that night, he was merely exhausted due to rapid weight loss

    Leonard knew what he was doing when he got Duran signed for the rematch, he knew Duran's weakness--going big like a Goodyear blimp between fights. Having said that, Duran signed for the fight and he never should have signed for it if he wasn't ready to train 24/7, eat pushups for breakfast and heavy bags for lunch. Saw Duran in his prime and agree with William Major: "the reality of it is when duran was prepared mentally he was unbeatable." Would only add to that, that in Duran's career, he was mentally rock-solid when he was also physically rock-solid.

    *The reason Duran quit was because he was disgusted with HIMSELF for being HUMILIATED by Leonard and not being able to do ANYTHING about it*. So it was Leonard that made Duran quit, plain and simple. Duran knew he was going to lose the fight badly if he continued. He was a Panamanian national hero after beating Leonard the first time and now he was reduced to a ridiculed former champion. Duran's wife was on video admitting that he stayed in his room and cried and cried after Leonard beat him :-(.

      Duran was definitely frustrated and embarrassed, but he was not getting hurt, at all. Duran thought he was going to throw up his hands and do things his own way. He said basically fuck it this guy's a clown. He realized quickly rather than doing something to show everybody he will not fight with a clown, he lost his title and became a boxer who was deservedly criticized for his actions.
      I also think Duran was not feeling well. His cornermen are photographed holding an icebag on his stomach between rounds, but he was not in so much pain that he couldn't box. Maybe he had to go to the bathroom, but truthfully I don't know. He has been boxing his whole life and eats and drinks before bouts in similar fashion, always. I think he was just frustrated and embarrassed and he thought he was doing something to show everybody that Leonard is a clown.
      I think Leonard is a great boxer. One of the best welters, ever. I got him at 2nd best, right behind Robinson followed by guys like Napoles and Hearns, etc.

I also found that Duran was overweight and that he had to lose all that weight and get into shape in only 3 months while on the other hand Ray was already fit and had more time to practice his moves. No offense to the americans watching but I trully believe that Duran is the better fighter and with more time to prepare he would have won the fight.

    I don't know why people are calling Sugar Ray a coward and weasel for asking for that rematch. He was obviously doing better because he was fighting the way he wanted to fight, not the way Duran wanted him to fight; the thing that happened in the first fight.
    I think Duran quit because he had no other trick up his sleeve other than to keep pushing Ray at the ropes and hit him with all his might. He did that the first fight and it worked well till in the later rounds Ray had it figured out and adjusted his style accordingly. Duran is ruthless but Leonard is damn smart. It always amazes me how he starts the fight as though he has no chance of winning it then it turns out he is not a hard nut to crack. Duran is a great fighter, too, but I prefer Leonard's versatility and flexibility.

    Leonard is basically saying he made the rematch as quickly as possible so as to give himself an advantage knowing that Duran would be handicapped in the ring by having to take loads of weight off quickly and before anyone comes back on that let's remember that solely because Leonard was an American fighter and Duran was Panamanian it was Leonard who brought all the US money and for Duran to earn a payday he had to dance to Leonard's tune. How unfair that is can be shown that in the first fight despite Duran coming in as a long time Undisputed World Lightweight Champion with an amazing 72-1 record with the sole loss avenged twice and that he was fighting 2 divisions higher Leonard was the one earning far, far more of the purse despite the fact he hadn't been a champion long and the only good opponent he'd beaten was Benitez. What's most telling is Duran asked and lobbied for the rubber match with Leonard straight away but Ray didn't want any off it and instead made the not only older in age but far, far older ring wise Duran wait going on ten years til he was 40 and shot to bits.

    Sugarman, that's why he walked out on you. He didn't want to give the pleasure of beating him. You didn't beat him, he quit. You didn't make him quit, he quit on his terms. Duran never uttered the now infamous words, "no mas." Those words were just media hype. What he actually said after throwing up his arms in disgust, not frustration (he was only behind by one point), disgust, was, "Yo no voy a pelear con este payaso." Translated to English: "I'm not going to fight this clown." This was not a fight to Duran. It was a circus and he didn't want any part of it. Latinos fight to establish who is the better man. Who is the toughest man, toe to toe. Latin people won't tolerate running, dancing, in their champions. They want to be entertained with a fighter's ferocity, aggression and hopefully, a perfectly built K.O. in the end. Like it or not, that's what entertains. And Duran was that. Not a dancer, but a fighter who wanted to hurt anyone who dared to enter his ring. Sugar outsmarted Duran with an immediate rematch and the dancing, but he didn't beat him in a fight. And Sugar knows this. It spoiled his victory. Hats off to Sugar. He was a brilliant boxer, technician and business man, but toe to toe, Duran was the better man.

      Hoka Hey that is nothing but excuses. Everyine has excuses. You can always fall back on them. You don't quit. Like sugar said " you'll carry me out the ring" before I quit. Sugar Ray was in his face when Duran quit. Duran wasn't frustrated because Leonard wouldn't fight- that BS- Duran quit because Ray wouldn't stand still and let him hit him. Leonard bobbed, danced, counterpunching Duran at will. Right in his face. Duran was too slow to fight and Leonard's punches were hitting harder as the fight went on. He knew the inevitable outcome of that. Also, the game is called Boxing, not Fighting. Maybe Duran was a better street fighter, but Sugar Ray was a supreme boxer.

      Leonard was ahead by only 1 point at the time Duran quit. He wasnt being dominated. Yes, he knew he wasnt in shape to last 15 at this pace. No way he gets ko'd though. Loose by UD, yes. It's a matter of tastes. Some like Ali. Some like Tyson. I never liked the «technicians». I like the Haglers and the Chavez'. I'll give you this much though, Sugar should be ranked higher than Duran in all-time greats, but he's not. Sugar is 12 and Duran is 6. Even though Sugar beat the guys that beat Duran.: Benitez, Hearns and Hagler. All Im saying is that Sugar wanted to beat Duran on his terms. Duran took that from him. Chickenshit way, though ill admit. But in a brawl, Duran has the edge.

      Hoka Hey Both great fighters. But Duran was Mr Macho and he was a bully. He taunted Leonard at the end of the first fight which he won unanimously but he hated it when Leonard taunted him in the second fight over a sustained period and hearing people laugh in the crowd hit his machiso where it hurts. Leonard boxed him and his machismo made he feel humilitated that's why he quit. But it was Leonards skill and antics that made him quit. If Duran had the balls to fight on who knows if he could have turned it around but he was not far behind when he quit. Remember Duran was the only fighter to beat Leonard in his prime and Duran used the same out of the ring tactics that Mayweather uses. Remember when you turn the tables on a bully their mind gets hazed and they make bad decisions. The older Mayweather would also have frustrated the hell out of Duran and tied him up more in the clinches and won on points. The younger Mayweather who took chances but who also hit with more combinations v Duran would have been interesting.

    Leonard acts like this was a major stain on Duran's legacy......and really it wasn't. It was something weird that happened but Duran more than made up for it. It tortured Duran for a little while but not for long. This movie makes it look like Duran never lived it down and in truth he moved rather quickly and rather successfully. Why don't any of these guys ask Duran why did he make him wait 10 years for a 3rd fight

    I'm not understanding people's logic here. The second fight took place 5 months after the first one. That's plenty of time to get back in shape and fight again. You could take 2 weeks off and celebrate a victory then get back in the gym and get ready to fight again. It's Duran's own fault if he was out of shape (which I don't think he was) Ray made Duran fight Ray's fight and Duran quit because he was out matched mentally. Duran couldn't get Ray to fall into the same trap and Duran was paying for it, and he didn't want any more.

      Ray said that he wanted to fight Duran "ASAP." Which means Duran knew within a week that Ray wanted to fight again, so if Duran went ahead blew up in weight, then that was his fault entirely.
      On another note, Duran shouldn't have quit, he was very much still in the fight and could have turned it around.

    • @ericastier1646
      @ericastier1646 8 лет назад +4

      +Pendejo Why just say half truths. Duran beat SRL clean and square in the first fight, Duran took the second fight for the money, when he made pennies in south america, he simply could not refuse that money no matter the circumstances of the fight, not when he made 100 times less in South america. Duran was totally wrong to take the fight at the short notice he did, definitely going for the 'buck' Duran used to put on loads of weight when not in training, you can't get in the warrior condition in the short space of time he had to, I'm suprised Eleta and Brown (Durans cornermen) took the fight? why did Leonard call all the 'Shots', I wouldn't have had Ray Charles sing the national anthem and all that razzamatazz if I'd had been Duran, Duran is a proud man, all that 'Clowning' was too much for his ego, he wasn't in good condition, if he had have been he'd have knocked Leonard out.
      But you see, SRL didn't have the self respect he needed to be a boxer's boxer like Roberto Duran, if he wanted a real rematch he would not have pushed money to make and exploit a 200+ pound Duran fight him ASAP, he would have made sure that Duran was in the Same condition as in the first fight and taken a win or a loss like a man. All he did is was light tags and run. SRL was fearing Duran still in the 2nd fight and didn't engage in a boxing match, but a circus act which lacks sportsmanship and is a disgrace to his name. He regrets it even now, but i think he understands his personality shortcomings come from being an abused child and he probably watched cartoons boxing parodies when he was young to resort to act like a fool which is out of place when facing as formidable boxer as Duran. SRL He had given up on boxing and was trying to beat Duran with ego games and apparences, running and frustrating the opponent by not boxing, that lame legacy continues with Gayweather.
      Duran was a proud boxer and respectful of the art of boxing, you cannot be a true fan of boxing and not bow to the man.
      The sad thing is SRL will never get closure. It would have been better for him to fight a Duran that was prepared and get knocked down by him. Because there is more glory in loosing like a man against Roberto Duran, than to win like a sissy.

    • @pendejo6466
      @pendejo6466 8 лет назад +2

      Eric Astier Duran took on the fight, no one made him.
      Duran was notified almost immediately of Leonard's intent to rematch, which means he didn't have much time to blow up in weight and get out of shape, not at the world class level Druan fought at.
      Duran had almost five months to train and get back in shape, but if he couldn't, he never asked for a postponement.
      The first fight, it's true that Duran beat Leonard, but it was Leonard's fault for fighting Duran's fight instead of using his attribute, which he successfully exploited in the second. And a "boxing match" was exactly what Leonard did in the second fight.
      And finally, Duran quit, gave a lame excuse to which even his own corner didn't buy.
      I am a boxing fan, and I still acknowledge Duran as the greatest lightweight champion ever, but facts are facts when you see past your emotions.

    • @ericastier1646
      @ericastier1646 8 лет назад +2

      Pendejo And you are talking with your emotions, your words strike me as biased like all Leonard apologizers who try to excuse his circus act that Duran wanted no part in "no mas". Later Leonard regretted what he did, it was not in the spirit of the sport, and deep inside just between him and Duran he knows Duran is the better boxer but as most black ego has it, would rather live with a lie. He had the second fight orchestrated from the dragging opening credentials with black singers going overboard with the national anthem and a paid black crowd or at least some blacks that haggled duran constantly and were seeing this as a race matter to get a win by any means and his clowning on the ring engaging the black crowd to defame his opponent. He ruined both careers that day. The truth is at their pro level it's always possible to get on the ring with another boxer and dodge the fight (which has inspired mayweather more than anybody else since) The rules of boxing are too lenient when someone is trying to displace the sport into something it was not meant to be. What most people will remember is that Leonard could not box Duran and win (and if their path had met in the 70's when Duran was in his prime he would have been a short affair), Duran dominated him so much in Montreal he had no chance to win if he was just boxing, he was not able to impose his style on Duran and he knew that by the second fight. No doubt too that the black stars community of the day had pushed leonard to exploit less honorable means as his big loss in Montreal was a huge blow to their very susceptible egoes. In Montreal Leonard started toe to toe but toward the second half of the fight had moved out considerably and yet was still outboxed and nearly ended the night on the canvas. Great boxers prevent opponent from using their usual boxing style, this is what happened.. It's not that SRL did not box from the outside in Montreal, he could not with Duran. In the second fight, he did what mayweather do today, which personally I have zero interest in and that isn't boxing, he ran and circled away the whole time. Bottom line, Duran proved to be so superior to Leonard, that Leonard had no other choice if he wanted a second fight than to do something unconventional and not in the vein of boxing. He did not win by boxing that day, he won by frustrating Duran by rallying a racially motivated black crowd and dodging a proper boxing contest. Another thing is that Duran was so confident after the first fight that he saw a second fight as an easy challenge even without preparing it. But he expected SRL would come to fight a real boxing match which he didn't.
      Their career records too says a lot 72-1 for Duran versus 36-1 for SRL. Roberto Duran was the most rounded and skillful fighter pound for pound almost artistically and the most influential to other boxers and yes that includes Leonard to this day that he had to go to Panama to meet him not long ago.

    From the outset of this interview, the reporter wrongly states that the 1st Duran - Leonard bout was "a split decision" & Leonard did not correct the reporter knowing full well that the 1st bout was a unanimous decision for Duran. Also, Duran had moved up a full 12 lbs from lightweight to beat SRL, the premier welterweight of that era. Duran is easily one the all time great boxers!

  • @johnduong5448

    if being laughed at is what it takes to lose then you were doomed from beginning with. Boxing is 90% psychological. Don't ever use your absence of "pride" as an excuse as to why you lost. If pride helped you win before, then it must've of been hard on the opponent who didn't have that pride -- meaning they had to try to win without as much pride by default. If you used the pride to win, you're gonna have to survive without it sooner or later. In life, everything is put to account. You can't say you deserve it more because you're more talented or more athletic. If you were not able to show up and get the job done, it is YOUR FAULT, PERIOD. Guess why.... because this a PROFESSIONAL competition, NOT AMATEUR.

    Duran quit because he couldn't catch Leonard, and Leonard was making fun of him. But he should have known, that in the rematch, after losing fighting toe-to-toe, Leonard would try to fight his own way, from a distance, like he did after that against Hagler. Thats his style and thats part of the game, and Duran normally knows, as a pressure fighter, how to cut the ring and break the ribs of these type of guys. But maybe this one was too quick for him.

I guess, Leonard would have won the later rounds because Duran was badly out of shape due to months of partying after their first bout. Once saw an interview with one of Duran's sparring partners who said Duran stopped because he had to go to the toilet. He supposedly hadn't managed to stop his uncontrolled eating before the fight. Lol.

    Ray Leonard clearly went to the Oscar DLH school of media coaching. He clearly thinks long and hard before -- and during -- answering questions so he says the right thing (PC that is). They are so fake the two of them.

    Duran is better than Leonard, both in their prime Duran won, the second fight Duran quit rather than Leonard won, they should have had a 3rd fight right away but Leonard said no because he knew he couldn't win and the 3rd one didn't take place until many years later

    Roberto Duran used to eat pounds of meat before each fight. Nobody ever did a thing like that, and I truly believe the "no mas" fight was because he was in danger of crapping his pants on national television, which would have been too great a blow to his pride.

    Leonard had a way of ducking fighters and always tried to get an unfair advantage whenever he could. For the Hagler fight; he wanted a bigger ring, 10 oz gloves instead of 8oz, 12 round fight instead of a 15 rounder, and Hagler gave in to all those concessions. Duran's manager railroaded him into a quick rematch when he obviously wasn't ready. Duran should have (since he was the defending champion), chose the location, the date and terms of the rematch, not Leonard. The chicken-shit gave Duran, Hearns a rematch 10 years later, never gave Hagler, Benitez a rematch. Leonard's record is suspect, and not Hall of Fame.

    • @joshvn715
      @joshvn715 10 лет назад

      Leonard is a Hall of Famer, saying a 4-division world champion and gold medalist is not an HOFer craps all over your whole point. And if Duran is one of the baddest and greatest fighter EVER, how is someone a chicken-shit coward to fight them under any circumstances? Please brag over the internet about fighting Roberto Duran yourself even at age 60 Duran would make silly loudmouths like yourself into real chicken shits.
      But I like some of your points. Leonard was very picky and his style was frustrating not dominating. Leonard did not stand in the pocket so much and really pranced around with flurries that did not hurt Duran. I believe Leonard could have beaten Duran up bad but, he never really did it. Leonard was not right to Hagler and he ended up w/ bad karma getting KO'd several times later in life. At the same time, Leonard had balls to go meet Hagler at his comfort weight of 160 not 154. Finally, Floyd Mayweather would really mess up Duran- pull counters, hit his body, defensively slip punches in the pocket. Floyd may NOT dominate Hearns, Hagler but he would wreck Duran even more than he would Pacquiao. Hearns killed Duran to end Duran's macho shit anyways.

      36 "Wins" 3 Losses 1 Draw
      Should be 34 Wins 5 Losses (Sugar Gay didn't win the rematch with Hearns, he even admitted as much, nor did he win against Hagler) Between 1980 to 1997 Sugar Gay fought 13 times lost 3 with 1 draw so he was 10-3-1...are those Hall of Fame numbers fool?

    • @joshvn715
      @joshvn715 10 лет назад

      Not only beats but TKOs in 15 round fight- Benitez, Kalule, Hearns ALL UNDEFEATED WORLD CHAMPIONS. Beat by one guy... Take Camacho, Cotto, De La Hoya careers combined they aren't better than Wily Benitez and Tommie Hearns. And if Sugar Ray really is gay more power to him he would fudge pack and do whatever he wanted to ur sry butt.
      I'm not SAYING Leonard is better than Hearns. But you're saying he isn't a HOFer! Ask Tommie Hearns is Sugar Ray was a bum or a B-fighter lol?!!!! Hearns could be better but he'd spit in the face of anyone calling Sugar Ray a bitch. And only real men can be boxers and only the best men fight Hagler at 160. Only best come to fight even Ray did it 5 times, one win is enough to be HOFer

    Durán was a very skilled boxer-puncher, he belonged to the very exclusive top 4 boxers of the Welterweight and Middleweight divisions of that era ( Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Durán). His first fight against Leonard was memorable, and the highest point of his career. Unfortunately, in the second fight, he got frustrated, could not hit the elusive and fast Leonard and quit instead of finishing the fight. The repercussions of his decision were catastrophic. Fortunately, he went up in weight and beat Dave Moore (R.I.P.) to win the Middleweight Jr. weight title.

      AND incredibly 6 years later beat IRAN BARKLEY for the middleweight title, at the age of 38!....Barkley beat TOMMY HEARN'S TWICE, brutally knocking him out in the first fight...No one like DURAN
      I mention this in an above post, but as quiet as its kept, DURAN also literally "skipped" over the 140 belt to get to Sugar Ray, and also many years before dethroned the best 130 pounder in the world before he began his Lightweight, and that was against ERNESTO MARCEL, the ONLY man to defeat ALEXIS ARGUELLO in his prime ...Only Pacman has more titles when you look at it this way

  • @1wannabee1

    SRL states clearly that he called his manager and said he wanted to fight Duran ASAP! Why? because he did NOT want to 'wait' as Duran was prone to piling on the w eight which itself would 'delay' a re-match. Leonard fought Duran 1st time, Durans way and it was pretty damn close. 2nd fight? SRL decided, 'ok 1st time it was your way, NOW its my way.(and history proves beyond ANY opinion that SRL gave Duran a 'boxing; lesson that NOBODY had done prior and never did after. THAT tells you how good SRL was. Imo? SRL was the best I've ever seen on a ring. Period! (and I have'nt seen any1 come even close to him since!)

  • @lexi6081
    @lexi6081 8 лет назад +5

    Pathetic reading all these excuses. Sugar Ray dominated him, clowned him and made him give up in frustration. He got hit and couldn't get a hit in, that's why he quit.

    • @MrLosguerreros
      @MrLosguerreros 8 лет назад +5

      Hey genius!...Duran was only behind a grand total of 5 point on 3 scorecards...YES he was clearly frustrated hardly a profound offering, but there is MUCH more to this story...Try and watch it again unbiased and see...If Ray was so "dominant" why the fuck did he make Duran wait 10 years for the rubber match?!....
      Duran had redeemed himself by winning the world title from Davey Moore who in turn had KO ed Benitez in 2 rounds!....I bet you werent even alive in that period, tap a reservoir of humility and watch with un biased eyes, you may well actually learn something....!
      Duran "style wise" at anything ver 14 was reduced to being a counter puncher, which is fine as long as fighters come to YOU, but a ordinary boxer who was mobile like "Kirkland Lange for example could make Duran look ordinary at that weight, however vs someone like Barkley or Barkleys old pal Davey Moore...DIFFERENT STORY

      Who* cares how many rounds Duran had won before he quit? Haha there was a clear turning point in the round that Duran quit, it would've continued on like that for the rest of the fight and Duran knew it that's why he quit.

      MrLosguerreros
      I did watch the fight unbiased. The first time I heard about it was when I wrote this comment, and I don't follow boxers below heavyweight tier, so I don't have a dog in this fight whatsoever. This means I have a more unbiased opinion than you, and it's clear to me that the guy gave up because he wasn't able to dominate and was getting clowned.

    • @LucasKingPiano
      @LucasKingPiano 7 лет назад

      Leonard was able to start showboating because he had Duran under control. He didn't resort to anything he had Duran beat and he started to toy with him because he knew Duran couldn't do anything about it.

    I have been a fan of Roberto Duran since as a kid I saw him live on TV knock out DeJesus in January 1978. I saw him beat up Davey Moore while I was a teenager in the ringside section at MSG. I never ever heard anybody but this announcer say that Duran knocked out a woman. I actually think Duran would be pissed off if someone said he did that. Why the fuck did this guy say that? A horse? Yes. Not a woman.

    Leonard was a phony, when Thomas Hearns beat him at middleweight he was given a false win. Knocked down twice and out gunned in many rounds Hearns won. The No Mas fight was because Leonard himself said, that he knew Duran gained many pounds and he used that as a ploy take advantage of the re-match. Now he is tormented due to the quick rematch. Please : you were tortured, Your ploy has destroyed you, as you tell us now. Grow up. HE HAD CRAMPS AND HE WAS WEAK. NO OTHER REASON. QUIT WHINING RAY. YOUR WERE ABUSED AS A BOY, WEAK EXCUSE
