I have a big question: I found a Lenovo explorer on ebay for 100 dollars that stops bidding tomorrow, and a Samsung odyssey plus for 130 dollars that ends in 2 days. Should I get the Lenovo explorer now, or wait for the oddysey? I don't know which one to choose, so whichever one you think is better I'll get.
From my "research", they are as good as identical when it comes to performance, but the oddysey is higher quality. So it's down to personal preference. But i'm not an expert, so don't take my words to seriously 😅 I think you will be content with both of them
this is awesome me and my dad are thinking about getting this for are game room. when I tested it out at the microsoft store I did the same demo as you and I was wondering how do you download games or can you only play what they have on the windows mixed realty app.
Base stations are needed for full body tracking. Even vive pro needed it. If only you want to be in the virtual world the wooden chump, you can do without them.
What about putting the shield out of the tracking field fof view in space pirate trainer for exemple? Does it just stay at the last known position? does it follow a translation path decelerating based on the speed prior to the loss of tracking? It's an issue that can affect the gameplay in some games.
Do the awkwardly placed thumb sticks on the controllers perform the same function as the trackpads? If so, why don't they remove them to make the controllers more ergonomic. They could offer different controllers for people that prefer the thumb sticks over the trackpad. Also, do the controllers have micro USB ports for recharging?
Hi Papias. The controllers are simply a mess. The weakest part of the whole package. I will make a dedicated video about that. The controllers work with 2 AA batteries.
Hey. Ive watched this video and now I will buy it but can a 1050ti 4gb mini and amd ryzen 5 2400 run games with that headset the main games I want to play are rec room, super hot, job simulator, saber and vr chat. Great video btw
Yeah, maybye not constantly at 90fps but when i first got my wmr headset i had an amd FX 6300 and a GTX750Ti Which worked fine on the games you mentioned at low/medium setting. So you should be fine
Excellent video. As can't get the Samsung unit this will be the one I buy. Will all games on Steam VR work with these though? Really want to play Project Cars 2 in VR. Will the games have to be individually programmed for the Windows headsets?
No Steam VR now and unclear if SteamVR games would work on WMR later, or only WMR will work on HTC. And it looks not gonna support any stereo drivers for non-VR games, so content extremely poor.
Александр thanks for the reply. Reason I asked is that several sites have said that steam VR developer's now have open access to the platform. www.pcgamer.com/steam-vr-support-for-windows-mixed-reality-is-right-around-the-corner/ I was just wondering how many of the games will probably be ported over as it were. And if you knew. Hopefully a lot will as its another platform to sell their games on. Otherwise it's going to be a very limited choice of games like you say.
Hi Chris, SteamVR will be fully supported, starting from late November! Developers don't need to reprogram their games! It's gonna be great and I will cover in detail here on the channel how it works.
Hi, I am gonna make an extra video about that question! But I can tell you that text is very much readable. But if it can really REPLACE your monitor, that is a different question!
mixed reality TV okay great :) my current workflow is just too much for a single 1080p display. Hence my interest in using this instead when I need the extra space
Hello, I would like to ask you how it works a GTX 960m, which is what I have right now on my computer, and if you can run games like Job Simulator or some simpler experience that does not need so much graphic power. I know there is a video talking about this topic, but I would like you to tell me how it works, talking about FPS. I'm hesitant about buying a Mixed Reality headset or wait for the release of the Oculus Quest. Thank you very much in advance.
These are "Microsoft Mixed Reality" VR Headsets. VR headsets based on Microsofts "Microsoft Mixed Reality" concept that basically is the UI for headsets spanning from AR (Hololens) to VR (these). Confusing naming but no AR at all.
These are VR headsets. The platform is called Mixed Reality because it supports both AR and VR headsets and apps. Many HoloLens AR apps will run in the Windows Mixed Reality platform. MS assumes AR and VR headsets will merge soon so they named the whole platform Mixed Reality.
#1Hololens fans Still not even close to Vive according to reviewers, may be max at par with Rift. But I did not have the opprtunity to test them yet though.. So lets wait and see..
It’s actually a bit smaller fov than oculus and vive, but it honestly wasn’t bad at all, I got used to it quickly. The resolution was a bit better too, but the tracking for me was a little weird at times because of the cameras on the headset
Has anyone tried the generic frames from VR lens lab with the Lenovo Explorer? I did not see any of the Windows MR headsets listed as an option for custom frames on the VR Lens Lab web site.
Should I wait for Pimax 8k or just get the samsung odessy. I have been saving up for vr for months now and just not sure when to jump in. I have only tried psvr.
Hi Junvrak, it could take a LONG time until the Pimax 8k is available, if you did not back the kickstarter. The Samsung Odyssey is a great choice. However, for $399 you get the Oculus Rift Bundle which has better controllers and solid content. It is the best choice at this moment in time.
Just buy the VIVE, it's still and for a while will be the best VR experience available (and if you go PIMAX you need the VIVE anyway since we know their controllers will suck [ come on you all know they are counting on you piggy packing on the VIVE peripherals]). However, if money is short the second bet is RIFT for 480 (399 + third sensor). That's a great deal. Seeing the market, these MS headsets, no new PSVR, and FB and HTC dumping their R&D into stand alone headsets.... I just don't see anything amazing beating these two out for 2 years in the high end department. The next few years are going to be the big tech companies trying to convince the mainstream public with middle of the road devices.
Hey there! I’m wondering how the lenses on this Lenovo headset compare to rift and Vive. Multiple reviews I’ve read say the lenses are worse on the explorer and blur and distort the image. Is this true?
ok so my lenovo explorer arrived today and i'm blown away by it!!! i tried a vive at a friend a year ago and really liked it, but the screendoor effect was really noticable. half a year ago i made my own vr setup with ps move controllers a 2k screen and some ps3 eye's for tracking. worked pretty wel around 60 hz but there where a lot of issue's. so when i installed the lenovo i was suprised by how easy it was! then i putted the headset on and WOW. i didnt expect that clearenty. everthing looks really good, and the sweatspot wasn't a issue for me. SDE is a bit noticable but yea i dont really care. but the best thing is the higher refreshrate. Wow it feld so smooth a was so happy. The tracking is really good too! no issue's, and the controllers fit perfectly in my hands. thank you for this review, i thought that you exaggerate a little bit but wow you are so right!
Just curious what your IPD is? I just had mine measured and its 61mm is that close enough to the sweet spot or should I consider a Samsung instead? I read that the software adjustment isn't that great with these headsets.
Hi Vyviel, my IPD is 64mm, which is pretty much average, so I can play most of the headsets without any adjustments. 61 does not sound too bad, but honestly, if you have the chance to check it out before in a store or so, I would really advise to do it. Because if it is uncomfortable, you will hate it!
Ok, so I purchased the Lenovo and want to know if its possible to use Steam only? or must I load both apps? I can't seem to use the second button on Steam for the main dashboard menu as it loads the microsoft garbage up. I wish we had a choice on this one!
RebootDat1 launch steamvr when the portal is closed. It will still load the wmr portal, but not the cliffhouse, so it will run better. For the steamvr dashboard, click the joystick button. Also, steamvr is releasing the ability to remap all vr controllers, including wmr
For you what is the best: windows mr headset, the vive or the rift because i really want a vr headset. I'm not sure which one I should take. thanks solemile
do you think the visual quality as well as pixels and imersion is better than PSVR? i do love PSVR but i cant use it with games on PC,only watch videos and some games that use xbox controllers, i wish i could play space pirate trainer but if i put psmove on PC it is much much work to do and i lost many times everytime i settup all...
Hi Sebastian, good review. Question 1. I'll probably pick up the Lenovo Explorer this week. However there are a few things i'm not completely clear about when it comes to IPD. I have measured my eyes IPD and got a result of 70mm more or less. How big of a deal is this when it comes to reading stuff in menus and games? I have read that some people actually returned their headsets due to this problem, but then there are others that claim that the software IPD adjustment worked great for them. My son owns the Vive, so I'm thinking that I can experiment a bit with the adjustment on his device and see if the clarity in menus improves. I know that the resolution is a bit lower on the Vive, but could my test on the Vive be applicable on the Lenovo as well? Question no 2. Do I have to set up the boundary in front of my computer? My computer is 4 meters away from my screen, and I would prefer to set up my boundary in front of my screen instead, can I do that? Thx and keep up the good work :-).
I don't know if I just didn't get the headset positioned right on my head but I totally disagree that the visuals on this headset is better than the Vive. I did notice it was maybe slightly sharper but the other issues I noticed made the increased sharpness not worth it. My IPD is 65 and I found the sweet spot to be incredibly small so positioning the headset to see clearly was a real pain. Also the chromatic aberration(blue and yellow lines on edges) was very visible when not looking directly forward and the image was less saturated, less bright and the blacks seemed more washed out. The worst part was when I moved my head around I saw warping and distortion of the objects starting at about 60% from the center of the lens which made me feel slight motion sickness and I never get motion sickness in VR. I also found it hard to get the headset to fit right. I tried shifting the position of the back part up and down to get it to fit right but the headset never seem to sit stable on my face like with the Vive. When looking down it also seem to shift slightly because of the hinged system. The combination of a small sweet spot and instability of the fit made it difficult to get consistent good visuals. The foam around the nose was also pretty terrible at least for me with a relatively big nose since the foam sitting on my nose made it slightly more difficult to breathe. I'm guessing I probably did not figure out how to wear the headset properly since I only got to try it once by my friend. I also noticed slight tracking issues with the controllers while playing Rec Room in a relatively dark room. While holding both my hands directly in front of me I noticed that the VR hands would shake slightly and not just once in a while but pretty consistently. It wasn't really bad but definitely enough to notice it. When I got back home and tried the Vive I knew I just wasn't imagining the issues with the Lenovo headset since the Vive was so much more comfortable and easier to get the positioning right. For someone that hates the fresnel lens in the Vive, I actually preferred the Vive's lens to the chromatic abberation and warping of the image at the edges of the Lenovo lens.
The Vive has a really nice sweetspot, which is bigger than the Lenovo one, probably that is why you prefer it! (For faster replies, simply join the MRTV Discord Server here: bit.ly/mrtv-discord )
Would you recommend it to Oculus Rift owners who are hungry for some more resolution and a bit more confort? (Currently it is around 270 in US with controllers so not expensive at all)
mixed reality TV Vrkommandos review was not promising at all. Screen was dim and I read somwwhere FOV is worse than Lenovo. I want light, PSVR style and a little bit high resolution, and lenovo seems to fit all these criterias. If I can find a place to test it it would be the best I guess. I believe these MS headsets can have additional features in the futures, who knows may be use front cameras for AR? Anyway thanks for helping
i am interested in buying this vr but can you please answer my questions will it work on all steam games like time machine and Robinson the journey?? and whats are the max Hz this be supports ?
Just 😳 THIS IS THE FUTURE OF VR ACCESS, still in infancy commercial wise, I can't wait to see what happens next. I'm wishing I'd waited and spent my money on this!
Hi Brendon! This is really good stuff! And there are gonna be so many of those headsets, prices will go down eventually. And it works just so nicely without the base stations. Incredible. I can't wait what 2018 brings for VR!
Thank you for this overview of things on the Microsoft MR side of things. I still love my Vive but definitely hope on another sale for this year's Black Friday in either Saturn/Mediamarkt or Conrad. With those stores being mentioned, hello from a fellow German.
Hi MegaManNeo, very nice to have you here on the channel! Sure, the Vive is great and all that content on it is sweet! Microsoft MR still has a long way to go, but it shows promise. Definitely worth it for more the productivity side of things. I am quite sure prices will go down further! Yep, keep a look out at Saturn and Mediamarkt, there should be something again soon with all that competition going on! Greetings to you, fellow German! :)
378€ is fine enough, maybe Black Friday offers even more of a discount though so I keep myself excited. If nothing goes, perhaps even Valve/HTC go for another Vive sale, that'd be awesome also because I have a friend who wants a VR HMD himself.
Hi Brett, the Lenovo is a great headset that you can buy NOW. :) It cannot compare to the Pimax in terms of FOV, but as I said in the review, it compairs very favorable against Rift/Vive.
Currently $99.99 on B&H. I couldn't pass that up. You'll have to buy the Dell Motion Controllers separately, as they're the only one selling the standalone controllers.
Am Lub I got it from Walmart with the controllers new for 190 or 180 without tax because controllers from dell were 100$ so it was cheaper buying it together
Thx for a lot of good reviews (also for daydream). I was wondering where in germany you can by the headset for 349 Euro? (Hopping they would ship to Sweden, cheapest here is about 469 euro)
Hi Björn, thanks, happy to provide some valuable content! The Lenovo Explorer was sold at Saturn für 349 €uro. But I just checked their homepage and it is nowhere to be found anymore. Seems they have sold them all!!
Oh really? That is odd! For me it will automatically connect once I turn them on. In the MR app on your computer, it simply says they are not connected when you turn them on?
There's a deal going at Walmart right now on the Lenovo Explorer for $180. In terms of affordable gen1 WMR, I feel like that's a very low cost to entry, but I'm pretty turned off by the colors on that Lenovo display. I found a reddit thread detailing how to change colors on a WMR HMD via AMD Radeon settings - does anybody know if that's possible on nVidia cards?
Hey Sebastian! Great review! That made me ditch my Vive and get the Explorer. However, I got mine today and it seems I got a faulty left controller. The left thumb stick is stuck to the side (in VR. Physically it sits where it should be), so I keep spinning around when in cliffhouse, for instance. I'm considering buying a new pair of Dell controllers and I was wondering if they'd work with Lenovo. Since you have ALL the HMDs, can you please confirm that? Pretty pleaaaase! :) Keep up the good work mate! o/
What is with the massive black circular border when using this headset in vr. It looks like i am looking through a port hole. I also have psvr and it doesnt have such a distracting border when in vr. Its like a comfort setting is always switched on and in no way is it 100 degree fov let alone 105 or 110. It looks like 90 degrees with this round border in place...it looks rendered so wondering if there is a windows setting that is putting it there?
Hmmm ok just seems like lenses are too far from my eyes. I took off the foam and pressed headset to face and instead of having an obvious round black border it is now more like an oval scuba diving mask view, which definitely gives more fov to my left and right. Which explains psvr looking better because i can put that right up close to my eyes.
I think maybe psvr has physically bigger lens and because of the type of lens the "appearance" looks wider maybe? In this lenovo it definitely feels a bit more closed in and looking through a scuba mask....I do like this lenovo though because if i tighten strap right up i don't get any light bleed at all. Going to put it through its paces this week. Thanks for the vids by the way, i have been going through them over the last 2 weeks trying to decide which to get. I was going to go for the samsung but saw a lenovo going cheaply so i had to go for it.
Couch Potato i was disappointed with the fov at first. I found that the nose foam was constantly pushing the headset away from my eyes, also the way i was wearing the headband. After Changing the foam to remove the nose piece, and wearing the headband higher like a crown, not down like a psvr, the fov was much better
Yeah i have swapped the headband back padding with the front padding, the back padding is thinner and have found that allows it to sit a bit closer to my eyes. FOV still looks a bit "round" rather than "oval" but view is at least a bit bigger now. I have got used to it after using it for a week...though still find throwing stuff with controllers doesn't really work for me (arizona sunshine, pick up a tennis ball and try throw it) .. that said still better than psvr and for the price can't complain.
I bought a Lenovo explorer yesterday and it is my first VR headset but when I put it on it looks like I'm watching thrue binoculars how do I fix this????
Why didn't they have 4 cameras for tracking. Two right in the front and two near the far right and left of the mask so it could track more around you.
Hi Mark and Paul. Totally agreed here Mark. Keeping cost down and they will for sure upgrade next gen. Hopefully also the controllers!

Great review! Thanks for clarifying the perceived FOV "issue" too.
Welcome!
3:40 "should you need to grab your beer in the real world. probably would also work for grabbing any other beverage... but I haven't tested that yet."
Haha :D
haha yeah!
id like to buy a head form like the one you are displaying the headset on in this video. could you link me to where to buy it please?
I have a big question: I found a Lenovo explorer on ebay for 100 dollars that stops bidding tomorrow, and a Samsung odyssey plus for 130 dollars that ends in 2 days. Should I get the Lenovo explorer now, or wait for the oddysey? I don't know which one to choose, so whichever one you think is better I'll get.
From my "research", they are as good as identical when it comes to performance, but the oddysey is higher quality. So it's down to personal preference. But i'm not an expert, so don't take my words to seriously 😅
I think you will be content with both of them
@@fabbemark5686 thanks for helping, but I already chose the lenovo explorer 😅 should be coming soon, but thanks for helping anyways!
You know how to solve the issues with fog in the Lenovo Explorer? It seems is a common problem duePD adjustment by software.
What is the IPD range configuration at windows setup for Lenovo?
do you think it worth buy or wait vive cosmos as vive cosmos will be attached to pc i wont have much difference between ''with cable '' or ''without''
Is this the best out of all the mixed reality headsets that are out at the moment then? (Out of this, HP, Dell etc)
When you bought it, did it include a bluetooth adapter for desktop pcs?
Nope.
this is awesome me and my dad are thinking about getting this for are game room. when I tested it out at the microsoft store I did the same demo as you and I was wondering how do you download games or can you only play what they have on the windows mixed realty app.
Get it!! :)
Getting this for $199 + shipping to Russia. Pretty excited.
Hi I’m looking at getting either the rift or the Lenovo would you say go with Lenovo then? What about game support, does it work well with steam?
tech jk works great with steam. I made a video where I compare the two headsets, have a look!
It's gonna be great and I will cover in detail here on the channel how it works.
mixed reality TV that's great news 😀. There are a lot of games on steam VR I want to try. Really looking to your future videos.
There lot of non-VR games i want to play with headset just like better version of 3d glasses. Shit that microsoft gonna not allow that.
A question : if you crouch is there any tracking about your body position ? Crawl... ?
Absolutely!!! 6 degrees of freedom! Just like Vive and Rift.
Thanks :)
I dont see why i couldnt get a camra and code it to track the controllers externaly. Is it because the software is closed source rather than open?
I have a laptop with a 960m, is it still worth buying?
What’s it like to use the headset for basic windows use ? Such as web browsing. I would love to use this to replace my monitor
They go on sale on seller refurbed ebay for $140 every once a while
Can we use Lenovo Explorer with Steam Deck? Or on our Android phone? Is Windows necessary in order to make this work?
@@devincurrie4145 you will need windows.
I saw no mixed reality in this review, just bog standard VR. How does the augmented reality look?
These are "Microsoft Mixed Reality" VR Headsets. VR headsets based on Microsofts "Microsoft Mixed Reality" concept that basically is the UI for headsets spanning from AR (Hololens) to VR (these). Confusing naming but no AR at all.
This is VR only.
These are VR headsets. The platform is called Mixed Reality because it supports both AR and VR headsets and apps. Many HoloLens AR apps will run in the Windows Mixed Reality platform. MS assumes AR and VR headsets will merge soon so they named the whole platform Mixed Reality.
Do you need a powerful computer to get the Lenovo explorer to work?
Not really.
Are you sure FOV is as same as Rift or Vive? A lot of people reviewed this unit report FOV: Vive
Gur Isler only Dell and Samsung has 110°FOV!
#1Hololens fans Still not even close to Vive according to reviewers, may be max at par with Rift. But I did not have the opprtunity to test them yet though.. So lets wait and see..
I am sure, since I have the direct comparison here.
It’s actually a bit smaller fov than oculus and vive, but it honestly wasn’t bad at all, I got used to it quickly. The resolution was a bit better too, but the tracking for me was a little weird at times because of the cameras on the headset
Tracking is everything, it makes or breaks VR.
Hey how wide can your glasses frames be and fit inside a Lenovo Explorer???
So does this work with most of the vr of games? Or will it only work with specific windows ar games from that store?
Windows Mixed Reality will work with content from the MS Store and SteamVR store.
Will work with all SteamVR games (soon) and of course everything from Windows Store.
Yes it is really good. Glad you like it!
How much is your IPD? Thanks.
It is 64mm.
Nice review!
Thanks! Stay tuned to the channel, more like this is coming!
Great review, really informative! I wish you'd touch upon the screen refresh rate though and how it felt compared to other headsets.
Hi there XDLugia! Thanks! Welll, it runs with 90hz and feels great! No complaints!
For you what is the best: windows mr headset, the vive or the rift because i really want a vr headset. I'm not sure which one I should take.
thanks
solemile
and i don't have a really big room to play
Hi, go for the Samsung Odyssey. If you cannot get it where u are, get the Lenovo Explorer.
do you think the visual quality as well as pixels and imersion is better than PSVR? i do love PSVR but i cant use it with games on PC,only watch videos and some games that use xbox controllers, i wish i could play space pirate trainer but if i put psmove on PC it is much much work to do and i lost many times everytime i settup all...
only 200usd in usa, might as well buy the oculus touch for about the same price here
...but what about the mixed part of this MR headset?
£198 from Scan in the UK atm!
What is the difference between vr and mixed reality???
Mixed Reality will kind of augment virtual stuff to your real environment.
Hey nice reporting. I think I will look into this when purchasing a vr headset. Thanks for that
You are welcome!
How can we watch 3d movies in windows mixed reality headsets ,
Is the hp mixed reality the same and leveno mixed reality
Worse
Das war ein tolles Video! Hast sofort einen Abonnenten dazugewonnen! :)
Super, das freut mich!
Would you recommend it to Oculus Rift owners who are hungry for some more resolution and a bit more confort? (Currently it is around 270 in US with controllers so not expensive at all)
Gur Isler Yes, I would!
mixed reality TV Thanks for the help. O btw, what about HP? is FOV smaller than Lenovo?
Unfortunately I have not yet had the chance to test the HP by myself. But surely want to do so asap.
mixed reality TV Vrkommandos review was not promising at all. Anyway thanks for helping
i am interested in buying this vr but can you please answer my questions will it work on all steam games like time machine and Robinson the journey?? and whats are the max Hz this be supports
?
@@phaidaux yea just bought it few days ago and i am pretty much satisfied ! thanks for the reply !
Just 😳
THIS IS THE FUTURE OF VR ACCESS, still in infancy commercial wise, I can't wait to see what happens next. I'm wishing I'd waited and spent my money on this!
Hi Brendon! This is really good stuff! And there are gonna be so many of those headsets, prices will go down eventually. And it works just so nicely without the base stations. Incredible. I can't wait what 2018 brings for VR!
What is the lens size?
All Windows MR devices other than Samsung Odyssey have the same lens size. I don't know it now but I am sure you can look it up.
What do imply by normal human eye distance?
Average is around 64mm.
The HDMI cable goes where?
The
HDMI in
or
HDMI out
It goes into the computer, which won't have HDMI out, so it goes into HDMI out
Good video, I have been looking at getting a WMR headset to just replace my PC monitor but this video was pretty interesting.
Great, you will enjoy this headset!
23 Dezember. 16% bei Media Markt mitnehmen :-)
378€ is fine enough, maybe Black Friday offers even more of a discount though so I keep myself excited.
If nothing goes, perhaps even Valve/HTC go for another Vive sale, that'd be awesome also because I have a friend who wants a VR HMD himself.
Where can i buy this for 378
GegX Software That's what I get with your 16% off in mind.
It is being assessed for off the shelf use by various military groups.
can i play vive and rift games with this?
Thanks for the review. I am waiting to hear more about the Samsung Odyssey before making a decision. Unfortunately, no one is talking about it.
Hi Aaron, I would love to review the Samsung Odyssey, but I cannot buy it here in Europe! Total Bummer!!!
Pls give us your Pimax 8k prototype review! Cant wait..
You got it now, enjoy!
Great review thanks for posting, would be interested to see how this compairs with Pimax 8K
Ok, damn. Thx for you reply.
Why dooes the gameplay look so laggy ?
Recording. Recording takes a hit on performance
I must pair my motion controller each time I want to use them, why ?
Oh really? That is odd! For me it will automatically connect once I turn them on. In the MR app on your computer, it simply says they are not connected when you turn them on?
It could be your bluetooth, some bluetooth can be troublesome.Update the drivers for it if you can.
can you play all the games that the oculus can play?
Yes, with ReVive!
Will I be able to enjoy this with just one eye?
I would certainly think so!
Keep up the good work mate! o/
I can confirm you can use any Win MR controller for any WinMR headset.
Strange that the PSVR looks so much better FOV wise for you. But yes, without a doubt the distance from your eyes to lenses is important.
Great chanel amd review ;)Wating for more :)
Hi Dimo, thanks! More coming!
I bought a Lenovo explorer yesterday and it is my first VR headset but when I put it on it looks like I'm watching thrue binoculars how do I fix this????
That's normal no fix
Why does it look choppy? Is it because you're running recording software?
Yep, still figuring out the best way to record Windows MR.
