Popes: You can’t just say your empire is holy.
Frederick Barbarossa: I didn’t say it. I declared it!

Amazing how can an Empire be holy when there’s a whole mess of murdering and self proclaimed? I thought THE MOST HIGH HIMSELF declares who is king NOT man.
We are talking about the same Empire that murdered THE MOST HIGH’S CHOSEN PEOPLE and Prophets? You mean the same Empire that steals, kills and destroys? You mean the same Empire that disregards the poor and leave them to die?
DAMN!!! People will call anything holy as long as it’s white!!!

It was long dismissed and not worth talking about, especially by the Anglo Saxon and French scholars of history, the british dominance in history for the common people doesn't helped either, more than riding the dead horse of Voltaire's quote had not been produced.
For now a few years it is getting better and better, especially since the media honestly tries to look behind the WWI/ II clouds, and although scraping the established policy of neglecting and ignoring German and Central European History before the War's.

I am student at Federico II university in Naples and it felt so strange when you showed it in the video ahahah I think that the Hohenstaufens are really important and overlooked among the holy Roman emperors, especially here in Italy, where siringa their reigns many crucially significative events occurred (such as the war bewteen the Comuni in Northern Italy and Barbarossa or the annexation of Sicily and Naples to the Imperial lands). Great video! I love how in this kind of series you give a detailed view of the history of a country through its leaders, focusing often on characters that sometimes are not well known

On the map Lindsay shows the modern country of Armenia, but historically it extended all the way to the north east corner of the Mediteranean Sea, almost bordering modern Syria. It was hoped that this southern bit of Armenia would act as a Christian buffer state to the Muslims. The northern part of Armenia was never involved.

Back in school in the year we were supposed to do medieval german history for any reason our lessions had to be shortened (probably the teacher was sick, and the other teachers made us do homeworks for other lessions) - we lost the whole reign of Otto IV from the shedule due to lack of time. - I never worked out why he was elected in the first place and what end he took; he only entered my mind as election/deposed/death-dates... - What a life to miss out on!

Great video Lindsay, however it would have been nice if you mentioned Federico II peace treaty with Sultan Al-Kamil, he basically led the least violent crusade of all.
Federico was deeply interested in establishing relationships with the Muslim world (in fact one of the languages he knew was Arabic) and despite the fact he had to eradicate Muslim rebels in Sicily those he managed to spare were gifted an entire city in Puglia named Lucera and many of them became his private guard.
(Interesting note: one of Federico most notorious monikers is "Puer Apuliae" meaning "The child of Puglia" however in this case Puglia refers to the entire kingdom of Sicily inherited by his mother Costanza)
Also minor linguistic correction: Bianca's surname is Lancia so the "cia" is pronounced like the "cha" in the Spanish name Sancha.

Since the main Branche of the Hohenstaufen was basically wiped out by the French, all those who remained were either through daughters of Friedrich or through illegitimate children.
The Hohenstaufen should have never lost the throne, it was a shame that Konradin and Manfred were slaughtered by Charl de Anjou, the Dukedom of Swabia would have continued to exist, the great interregnum would have been prevented.

The conflict between the Papacy & Frederick II also affected the Kingdom of Sicily, where Frederick mostly lived for most of his life-time. After Pope Pope Innocent IV excommunicated him in 1245, his son Conrad, who was ruling Germany in his name, was defeated by the Pope-supported anti-king Henry Rapse at Frankfurt. Frederick consolidated power in Sicily & was supported by the Ghibbelines in Northern Italy but lost his determination to fight after his defeat at Parma (1249). In 1251, Conrad was defeated by William II of Holland, who had succeded Henry Rapse as the new king of Germany with the Pope's support, so he also moved to Sicily but was faced with revolts throughout the kingdom incited by the Pope. Innocent IV also had him excommunicated at 1254. Both Innocent IV & Conrad died in the same year.
Frederick's other son through Bianca Lancia, Manfred ruled Sicily as the regent for Conrad's son Conradin (who was in Swabia at that time) until 1258 when he declared himself king. He was excommunicated thrice by succesive Popes. Pope Urban V called a crusade against Manfred, to which Charles, duke of Anjou & brother of king Louis IX of France responded by attacking Sicily. Charles killed Manfred at the batlle of Benevento in 1266.
Conradin was blocked from becoming Emperor by Pope Alexander IV, who instead chose king Alphonso X of Castille. So Conradin enlisted the support of Castille's rival Aragon for regaining his Sicilian throne. Although excommunicated by Pope Clement IV, Conradin won a naval victory against Charles of Anjou in 1267. But his army was routed at the battle of Tagliacozzo the next year. Conradin himself was captured in Sicily & beheaded on the orders of Charles of Anjou.
Charles' rule in Sicily was undisputed until the Sicilian Vespers of 1282 when the native Sicilian people, supported by Peter III of Aragon (Manfred's son-in-law) & Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII (who sought revenge for the 4th Crusade), rose up against French misrule. As a result, Charles lost control over the island of Sicily to Peter, while retaining the mainland territories (which is referred to as the Kingdom of Naples)

Well, I have watched all of these, slightly out of order, since the first I watched was actually the last, which I didn’t know until I noticed the other four listed below it.
You have a clear, easily understandable voice, but the amount of information was too overwhelming for me retain and make sense of, especially with all the reused names. It reminded me of having to learn the human circulatory system in biology class in high school. Some were good and some were bad, some improved life for their subjects, most didn’t. What seems obvious to me is that if a ruler has so much territory that he can’t control it; then it would be better to have less and be satisfied and not to have to be constantly fighting with no opportunity to enjoy what one had. Of course it also seems most enjoyed the wars. I noted many died unexpectedly young and at convenient times. The only two I’ve ever vaguely noted was the one (I think a Charles) who did little to nothing to aid his Aunt, Katherine of Aragon, when she was as dying of neglect caused by her husband, Henry VIII, and the one who failed to rescue his sister and her children during the French Revolution. Other than that they all seemed interchangeable and products of one of two or three recurring molds. Your research and production are very professional and I mostly enjoyed this, even if my interest does not match yours. I became a much more limited scholar of the Tudor/Stuart periods of history and some of the actual Roman emporers , when there really was a Roman Empire. Thanks for your work. I’m glad there wasn’t a test. I think I flunked the one on the human circulatory system, but it had no lifetime negative effect that I’ve noticed.

5:35 Well, that wasn't his invention really. Bishops had been installed by emperors during the Ottonian and Salian dynasties as well. This changed during the investiture struggle at the beginning of the 12th century with a compromise: emperors could install bishops into their secular office within the German kingdom while the pope would install them into their churchly position.
I don't know that Barbarossa changed it, maybe he did for a while.

Dear Lindsay would you please help me with a question. By looking at the map shown at the beginning of every video of this series, it seems like the Roman empire encompassed very little of Spain, but the great walls of the city of Lugo (In Galicia) are called Roman walls and were supposed to protect the city of Lucus Augusti from invaders. I'm confused!

    • @hmvollbanane1259
      @hmvollbanane1259 2 года назад +2

That's because it is about the holy roman empire which was the successorstate of Charlemagne's frankish empire and led by German nobles (basically the pope made a deal with the new strongmen on the block, the germans, to have a wordly counterweight against the Byzantine emperors who also claimed authority over the church).
There was something called the four empire doctrine in christianity which meant that there were only four empires (babylon, persia, Alexander's and the Roman in all of human history and with the end of the last the last day would come, the world end and God's eternal empire rule for eternity, which is why for contemporaries the holy roman empire was seen as the continuation of the roman empire.
While Spain was also conquered and ruled by Germanic tribes after the fall of the actual roman empire they were of different tribes than those of the holy roman empire and therefore didn't belong to it (though eventually the ruling dynasty of the holy roman empire at the time, the house of Habsburg also became monarchs of Spain)

Why wasn't Hungary ever annexed into the HRE?

    • @Siegbert85
      @Siegbert85 2 года назад

In a way it was. The first Hungarian king Stephen I received his crown from the hands of emperor Otto III thus technically accepting his suzerainty. Same can be said for Poland.
However, neither Hungary nor Poland were ever integrated into the feudal system of the HRE nor were the emperors ever directly via their office kings of those kingdoms like they used to become in Italy and Burgundy whose kings the disposed or died out.

So many dead kings before the age of 50. I don’t even want to think about how bad the healthcare and hygiene were.

Interesting, I really enjoyed your presentation, thumb's up.
    👌😁
This topic has long been dismissed and was not worth talking about, especially by the Anglo Saxon and French scholars of history.
The british dominance in history for the common people, doesn't helped either, and really not a lot more than riding the dead horse of Voltaire's quote had been produced.
For now a few years it is getting better and better, especially since the media honestly tries to look behind the WWI/ II clouds, and although scraping the established policy of neglecting and ignoring German and Central European History before the War's.
