I moved into my first studio apt in Chicago by myself and the fees included: First month's rent $995, application fee $65, move in fee $250 (no security deposit), basic renter's insurance $159 that was required by my landlord (monthly payments are an option). Other fees can also include pet fees ($100-400) and parking (+$100). This was the only apt I applied to so you will be spending a lot if you end up applying to multiple places. My tips would be - try to find a place that has windows, this will help keep your electric bill low - try to find a place that has as many utilities included as possible (heat, gas, electric). IMO, trash/sewage/water are things that you should NOT be paying for as a renter. - Shop at Ross/DD's/dollar stores or any thrift stores for furniture/bathroom/kitchen/decor. - Have at least the first 3 month's rent saved up. - Look for student/military discounts!! Xfinity offers student discounts for college students in certain universities (the list is on their website) - In unit laundry is a huge benefit (if possible)
Great advice!! Dollar Stores have saved me-they sell some great bake ware and cooking items along with many other products that you can stock up on (batteries, light bulbs, dish soap etc).
omg i completely forgot about renter's insurance! I paid a one-time fee for that and I'm covered for the year - it was probably around the same cost as yours! I also HIGHLY agree on the in-unit laundry point!
I was hella excited to move out and I haven't felt sad at ALL. literally. I moved out in October 2021 and so far my life has gotten exponentially happier, more relaxed and I can finally be myself. living alone is THE SHIT 😍
I’m just here to say that it’s okay if you move out and all you have is a bed and a dresser. I moved out and that’s how i started and stayed for 2 months. then i finally got a couch, then finally a table, etc. i have since fully furnished my place but it took a long time. prices add up and at the end of the day if all you have is a bed that is still something to be grateful and thankful for!!! i agree with the cat thing! i started with 1 and i now have 2 and they are the lights of my life. they keep my sane when i feel like i’m loosing my mind. if you can care for them and commit to them I highly recommend.
Agree 100%!!! I've been here 9 months and I still don't have everything I want for this apartment. It's a process that everyone completes at their own pace! ❤️
@@HannahElise Absolutly!! I agree with everything you say I just wanted to remind any viewers of the same thing, everyone will get where they want to be eventually at their own pace! Love your channel Hannah, wishing you the best!
My goodness Hannah what a wise woman you are. I wish I had your maturity and insight when I was 23. Great thoughts, ideas, insights and communication style. :) Very relatable for young people. I’m 61 and I enjoy all of your videos. I’m a real one ;)
I really appreciate the transparency. I am 23 also and moving out seems like such a huge step in "adulting", so it has always been so intimidating to me. I am barely starting my career so I definitely need some time to establish myself financially and move out, but it is super helpful to start thinking about some of these things, such as saving up for a few months worth of rent in advance. Great video as usual!
i'm 16 and have no plans on moving out anytime soon but i just sat here and watched hannah talk about moving out for 25 minutes. no regrets it was so fun lmao
I am with you with the anxiety around not having enough money or suddenly having no job. It makes me soooo nervous. But I've realized sometimes you just have to jump!
i just spent the last like 5 days binging all hannah's videos. its very rare that i find a creator who i like this much, she's so authentic and likeable and charley is adorable
Thank you Hannah, I liked how you gave reasons why a cat added value to your life and added how anxiety can affect moving out especially when assessing how ready you are in moving out.
This is so timely! 💕 I'm moving out this week, but I really needed to hear the section you made about the emotional and mental struggles of moving out. As an international student I've moved many times, but it never really gets any less daunting. Now I'm moving again for grad school, and I was upset at myself for not being able to "cope," as well as I thought I should be but hearing you say those comforting things felt so relieving and validating! Thank you, Hannah! 💖
You are so amazingly focused and together at your age...wow. It's incredible to see and makes me a bit embarrassed to admit how I first moved out. Long story short, I was 23, I'd just graduated from Cal Berkeley, I had a job of sorts, and I was miserable because I had a boyfriend of one year that I loved a lot, but my parents were so insanely protective that they would not even allow him to come over and hang out with me. IN THE LIVING ROOM. So I finally just gave up. I had a small savings account. My boyfriend was in his last year of college and only had a part time job, but his Mom loaned him a couple hundred dollars. We got together with a friend and rented a small, dark two bedroom apartment in Oakland for $550 a month. We coughed up first, last and deposit, and signed the lease. I packed up a couple of boxes of my books and clothes and moved out. A friend came by with his pickup and moved my bed and bookshelf, desk and a couple of chairs and lamps--that was all I owned. My boyfriend brought a couch and table donated by his Dad, and we bought kitchen stuff together. And that was that. Total cost per person, about $550. Granted, it was 1988 and a very different and more financially reasonable world. But still, that was a lot of cash for us. Sometimes you just gotta go for it.
Thank you so much for sharing this. You really don't need much & just gotta do what you gotta do to make it work for yourself! So this is not embarrassing at all - actually quite admirable that you just went for it!
I'm trying to save to move out of my parents' house and it makes me feel so anxious... Nobody teaches you this in school, college, ect... I'm asking my friends for advice, but this type of videos is what I needed
Adding a plug for Dyson: Hannah is SO SO RIGHT. I have a 15 year old corded Dyson. It weighs a ton and yeah, it's old. But it's probably one of maybe five or ten things in my entire life that I am grateful every day to own. I get it serviced every six months or so and that's it. IT'S NEVER BROKEN DOWN. And it can suck a Volkswagen bus through a garden hose. Period!
I appreciate so much that you addressed the mental aspect of moving out, I move this week and it is terrifying and anxiety provoking… not to mention starting a new job on top of that. Thank you for validating my feelings ♥️
I moved to my first (shared) apartment at age 18 and moved back to my parents 6 months later, it just didn't feel right. When I was 19 I found my dream apartment and I moved out again - for good this time. I wish I knew earlier that I didn't have to rush and move out as soon as I graduated just because a lot of my friends did... Thank you so much for sharing the "mental" point of view, you really validate my feelings.
I’m so excited for this one. I’m thinking of moving out soon but there’s so much I feel like I don’t know!!! Hannah’s videos comin in clutch once again 🥺🥰
Such good advice!! I can say when I moved out, it was not the best situation so having money saved was not there. However, I managed and learned as I went. I think that’s the one thing I can say is that living on your own is one heck of a learning curve-like the first time a light bulb burnt out, I realized I didn’t have any replacements. Same with batteries. It’s funny how we will have personal hygiene back ups, but house stuff you forget-and it’s not hard to get, it’s just a reminder of what you might need down the line. I am forever grateful that the building I rent in (also an old building converted to apartments), everything is included. I just pay for phone/internet. Do check for expenses and places that come with parking if you have a car. I’m lucky I had parking with every place I lived in. Laundry is another thing-this is the first place I’ve had with no laundry (sniff), but I have a laundromat down the street. So, not a huge issue ;)
This made me feel so better about moving out without having much money saved. Moving out soon because at some point I just got fed up with parents and their ways. Don’t have much saved up but I can sacrifice some things for a couple of months to have my own space
I finally bit the bullet and bought the same breville barista. I had been wanting one for so long and after watching your apartment videos when you first moved I did it. I agree. The best purchase I have ever made!!
You are right about everyone has their own pace, i actually moved out before i went to college (for my college actually 😄 ) back then it was very scary, but looking back that was one of the most amazing experience i had
Completely agree with the thrifting/Facebook marketplace when my family first moved to the states we didn’t have much money our house is practically 100% items my mom thrifted or got at Facebook marketplace and it looks great 💁🏽♀️✨
I'm about to graduate college and, although I've technically been living away from home for the past 5-ish years, college apartment living (with roommates who are also students) is totally different from living on your own as an independent adult. I'm SO nervous, but videos like these really help as I'm figuring out where I want to be and what I want to do. I'm probably taking a gap year before grad school, so I just really appreciate your content, Hannah!! ilysm
I’m in the same situation you were in last summer. I’m moving out in August and I’ve been saving every check since January. I live with my parents and my mom lets me spend $10 of my check a week lol. I’m nervous about moving out, but I like what you said about how, if you weren’t ready you wouldn’t be given the opportunity. That was comforting
trust me - you will thank your mom for doing that!! having a safety net when moving out is so unbelievably helpful & helps relieve anxiety. also, it's so true about opportunities! glad you got some comfort from it ❤️
I’m not planning on moving out anytime soon, but the quotes helped settle my regular day-to-day anxiety and I’m now going to live by the sayings you put in this video. Thank you for sharing!💖💖
YES!! My kitty is my best friend and trouper. I was loving watching Charley in the back and when you were talking she was grooming under the blanket. My kitty does the exact same thing!!
this was so useful! i’m moved out at university at the minute which has been a big adjustment, especially with balancing coursework, but we”re getting there :) i wish i could bring my cat with me ahah. you’re moving out journey has been such an inspiring outlook on the highs and even the struggles of doing so, so thank you
Just a piece of advice. No credit is better than bad credit. I really recommend not getting a credit card at 18 unless you have a full time job and have that income to pay it off. Otherwise I would not do that. I know too many people that have bad credit, and an overwhelming amount to credit card debt they end up not being able to pay. I’m 26 have never needed a credit card and have never had one, my credit score is low 700, and I have a loan for my car, and my student loans working to build good credit and it’s been fine for me.
JUST WANNA SAY THAT I LOVE HANNAH!!!! SHE'S ONE OF THE MOST PRECIOUS PEOPLE IN THE WHOLE WOOOOOOORLD!!! WHY AM I SCREAMING? I DON'T KNOW. SHE'S THE BEEEST.
Thank you so much for this!!! As someone who is moving out soon, it is so helpful to hear from someone who recently experienced what I’m going through!!! Love you Hannah❤️❤️❤️
This was such a great video (coming from someone who just finished their first week in their first Manhattan apartment)!! Also, I second the espresso machine comment. I have the same one (gift from my parents) and it has well over paid for itself!
Loved the video Hannah :) although I can't relate to the mental aspect of moving out myself because I went to boarding school early on and hence haven't lived with my parents since I was 15, but I see some of my friends still struggling with moving out even though they are now 23/24. Also I cannot emphasise enough how much more responsible and independent I have become since living by myself, so for me it was not only moving out from my parents but also living by myself. Loved that you also talked about the money aspects of moving out, that's so important.
i’m not planning to move out any soon and i’m not even from the US but this video was still really helpful and i’m sure i’ll come back to it when i have to do it. you are an incredible woman and i love your videos ❤️
I'm not from the states but in the MCOL area and I cannot imagine the amount that went into the first payment! Comes to show how crazy the rental market in NYC has gotten. We were lucky, and just needed to pay first month's rent, guarantor if needed and a credit check but I know some people near me have had to pay a deposit and application fee
Watching your moving out videos last year was extremely helpful as I was in a similar situation. As a matter of fact, I was rewatching those few days ago to find the checklist you mentioned - it is phenomenal! Thanks, Hannah! ❤
I am about to move out in a few days, I am moving to a working women's hostel for now because it's budget friendly and it's government authorized so it's safe and all but I am really nervous because I have never lived away from my parents before specially with strangers. the anxiety is top noch but I am also excited. your moving out tips in all your video are really heplful. Thank you so much❤️
Im currently 15 going to 16 in august and idk why im stressing about adulthood and moving out rn but I am. This video gave me a pretty good preview on what I should be expecting and I am eternally grateful to you for that. Thank you 💗
Thank you so much Hannah for this video!!! 🙏 I’m not anywhere close to moving out but I think about it from time to time and I always get anxious thinking about all the unknowns (prior to this video there wasn’t much material on RUclips talking about the logistics of moving out). You’re helping so many of us! 🥹💕
I have been waiting for this since your poll on Instagram! This has been so helpful and I can not thank you enough for being so open about everyone with moving out. Fingers crossed I will be moving out next year.
I feel happy when I get a notification that you have uploaded a new video 🥰😘😍. Thank you very much for uploading the video. Your videos fill me with so much positive energy 🍓♥️🥰😍😍
OMG HANNAH!! I so needed this since I’m planning to move out soon (latest December of this year). Thank you, I’ve followed you since your sophomore year of college since we entered college at the same time
Hey Hannah! My boyfriend and I are in the process of moving into our first apartment in less than 2 weeks so this video could not have come at a better time :) During your video when you asked about if good faith deposits were a thing in other places I think that depends on the city or town you move to. Since NYC is such a popular place to live it only makes sense that there would be good faith deposits because apartments get taken off of the market so quickly, however where I'm moving (a city in the southeastern US of about 145,000) that wasn't the case. We each had to pay an application fee and then an admin fee which covers the cost of a criminal background check and credit check. These fees were non-refundable sadly, but weren't more than $150. Then once the application was approved we paid a security deposit, and the amount of the deposit depended on how good or bad your credit is. (The better the credit the lower the security deposit) Then obviously the rent once the lease was created. Hope this made sense and helped anyone out in the comments who are moving to a smaller area in the U.S.
Hi Hannah Elise! Thank you for this video on tips about moving out! I have plans to move out of my mother's house after I graduate from college and I always wanted to become more independent and free-spirited. I hope these tips will be helpful for me once I'm ready! Love you, Hannah Elise!♥️♥️♥️❤
From Southern Pennsylvania, my fiance and I just signed our lease for an apartment. We did not have the good faith check. We paid for our application (like $25 per a person), then when we signed the lease we did a security deposit (which like you is the cost of rent and is held during the duration of our lease). I think the "good faith check" and taking it off the market is for major cities that have higher demands.
don’t know if wholesome is the best word to describe this video but… Thank you so much Hannah. I needed to watch this video. Minutes before I felt as if I was going to vomit because of the anxiety of moving out but you’ve left me calm. Definitely going to see the checklist link. Thank you again
Hey! I watched this video a while back and I’m finally moving out in about a week! I’ve been planning this for a while, and this video helped me so much!
They did that whenever we moved Into the house we rent now. And I have a cat, she’s my baby and my world so I know how you feel! Also much love Hannah! ❤️ I’m a real one !
This was super helpful as someone who is getting ready to start looking for a place and has tons of anxieties about it. If anyone has any tips for generally preparing to move out of your parent's house, with a pet, and a small income, I would love to hear it! :)
This was really helpful im moving out in a week to a new town and still trying to get it all figured out. This video helps me calm down and just take it one thing at a time. Thank u soo much 😊
How can such a young Person give me so much Peace 😇🥰 Girl you are such a beautiful, inspiring & well raised Woman... I'm so in awe! When I see some woman your age I usually get a Headache. But You? nope. We're only 7 Years apart but really, you talk so good and open about it. It sounds like you're the 30 year old from Us. 🤔😁😉💞💕 Thanks for your Videos. You help a lot of young People to get their Feet on the ground ❤️❤️❤️
I mean. You're bord for this. The vlogging and stuff is great but if you don't see yourself as the next motivational speaker you clearly are, you're missing out big time I like to think. The ease you deal with so called "invisible topics" the intrinsic stuff, call it emotions or whatever, of things is just so harmonious. I would love to see you transcribing all this beauty into a 40 to 75 books and lose myself in it. You got it!!!
This is a great video! I do just want to say that there are times in life when you have the oppurtunity to consider doing something, but that doesn't always mean you are ready. It has been really important for me to learn how to consider/ process my feelings seperatly from the physical state of a situation. Different things work for different people so I just wanted to add another perspective to the "how do you know you are ready" section of the video in case it is helpful for someone:)
Im 31. Im still living with my family but ive decided that im waiting for my dads neighbors to move so i can move in. Ill be near my dad, 30 mins from my work (not an 1h45) and still be close enough to my dad and able to get to my mom and stepdad.
I wanna be independent nowadays. I want more after watching the video. I agree with that a cat brings us how much loves it brings us because I have taken care of one dog. I have not felt missing out because of my puppy.
I'm so excited for this one! I will be moving out in September / October to go to University and moving out is my only option to go to Uni, so I'm really not sure if I'm ready
I moved into my first studio apt in Chicago by myself and the fees included:
First month's rent $995, application fee $65, move in fee $250 (no security deposit), basic renter's insurance $159 that was required by my landlord (monthly payments are an option). Other fees can also include pet fees ($100-400) and parking (+$100). This was the only apt I applied to so you will be spending a lot if you end up applying to multiple places.

Yes application fees can really add up. Also if you have good credit makes a difference.
Great advice!! Dollar Stores have saved me-they sell some great bake ware and cooking items along with many other products that you can stock up on (batteries, light bulbs, dish soap etc).
Lovedd this list of tips!❤ I stand by the having windows in the house to keep the electric bill low.
omg i completely forgot about renter's insurance! I paid a one-time fee for that and I'm covered for the year - it was probably around the same cost as yours! I also HIGHLY agree on the in-unit laundry point!
I can’t stress enough how important it is to save up a years rent + a little more for deposits/admin fees

I survived my first year away at college and was so anxious about it! about to leave again so I'm excited for any and all advice
the way she thinks we wouldn’t listen to her talk for 3 hours lmao
Thank you so much for this!!! As someone who is moving out soon, it is so helpful to hear from someone who recently experienced what I’m going through!!! Love you Hannah❤️❤️❤️
YOU GOT THIS!!! I'm rooting for you, love you more! ❤️
Even as someone whose currently in a gap year and going to college next year, this vid is super helpful!! 🙌 And also, girl you look gorgeous! ❤️😊
I feel like a lot of this can apply to a lot of situations so I'm glad you enjoyed :) and thank you so much 🥺
This was such a great video (coming from someone who just finished their first week in their first Manhattan apartment)!! Also, I second the espresso machine comment. I have the same one (gift from my parents) and it has well over paid for itself!
CONGRATS on your apartment!! & yes, this machine has paid for itself multiple times over 😭
I love seeing how you and Ava are combining your mannerisms
Hannah I’m literally moving out for college this Saturday, this video is just perfect tysmmm
this is making me so excited to move out!!!
This could not have come at a better time bc I’m getting ready to move myself down to SD 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Moving out was the best thing I’d ever done, thanks for making this video :)
i’m not planning to move out any soon and i’m not even from the US but this video was still really helpful and i’m sure i’ll come back to it when i have to do it. you are an incredible woman and i love your videos ❤️
I'm not from the states but in the MCOL area and I cannot imagine the amount that went into the first payment! Comes to show how crazy the rental market in NYC has gotten. We were lucky, and just needed to pay first month's rent, guarantor if needed and a credit check but I know some people near me have had to pay a deposit and application fee
yay! so excited for another video!! love you Hannah ❤️
Watching your moving out videos last year was extremely helpful as I was in a similar situation. As a matter of fact, I was rewatching those few days ago to find the checklist you mentioned - it is phenomenal! Thanks, Hannah! ❤
YAYYY I loved that checklist too so I'm glad you found it helpful too! :)
Really needed this video! A boost for my metal health today❤️
Thank you so much❤️
Your videos are not only visually enjoyable and entertaining, but I also leave with so much knowledge. Thank you x
I felt that love for the vacuum! 😂 the Dyson is number 1 on my wish list 💕
I had to move out at 18 so this year has been a real challenge but I am slowly getting there ❤️
YOU GOT THIS! grow through what you go through ❤️
Thank you for this video. About to move out soon and stressed is an understatement. So this video came at the perfect time!
i also live in NYC and we have TWO dyson animals now (the v8 and the v11). THEY ARE SO GOOD.
Hello, I specialize in getting people approvals 24/7. I offer apartment packages, that have everything you need to successfully apply for apartments!
So excited to watch! I'm actually moving into a new apartment sometime next year, so I know for a fact this video will be quite useful.
My name is Charlotte and knowing your cats name is Charlotte made me feel like I was definitely meant to watch your video!
Hannah, you're a real one for this.
I kinda figured (re: the good faith deposit). I hadn't heard of it before hunting in NYC 😅
most likely moving to college next year (but not gonna live on campus) so not exactly what you’re talking about but I’m so excited for thissss💕💕
IM A REAL ONE and this is so helpful bc im moving in a month!!
I quote your mom's saying about the comfort zone in my school essays. QUEEN
I’m leaving for college in September soooo this video is perfect and on time !!! ❤️❤️❤️ thnx
Hannah, have you ever thought about making podcasts? That, I believe would be really awesome, I just love the way you talk about things.
don’t know if wholesome is the best word to describe this video but… Thank you so much Hannah.

Charlie being on the back, chilling, makes my anxiety go down😊
Thank you for this! I’m about to move out for college. This makes me feel so much better about moving! I love you Hannah:)
I love you too :)
Am i the only one who thought she ment she was moving out from the NY apartment ?!?!?!? What a wonderful video btw very useful💛💛💛

Thank you so much for making this video, it really helped me!
This was really helpful im moving out in a week to a new town and still trying to get it all figured out. This video helps me calm down and just take it one thing at a time. Thank u soo much 😊
How can such a young Person give me so much Peace 😇🥰
Girl you are such a beautiful, inspiring & well raised Woman...
I love your vids. I’m thinking of moving out next year, and I needed this video! ☺️
I'm so excited for this video!!! I'm moving out for college and I literally have no clue on what to pack 😅
Love your longer-ish videos 🤩
Yes, have a cat is the best thing in my life!
Miss ma’am sorry to interrupt but YOUR CAT IS THE REAL ONE HERE LOOK HOW CUTE SHE LOOKS ON O:49 🥰👑
Im 31. Im still living with my family but ive decided that im waiting for my dads neighbors to move so i can move in. Ill be near my dad, 30 mins from my work (not an 1h45) and still be close enough to my dad and able to get to my mom and stepdad.
I LOVE your videos ! 🤍
Omg how exciting! I can’t wait for you to start this new chapter in life Hannah! I’m super excited for the moving vlogs to come 😊
She’s not moving. She’s giving tips for those who are from her own experiences,
she has already moved out...
I wanna be independent nowadays. I want more after watching the video. I agree with that a cat brings us how much loves it brings us because I have taken care of one dog. I have not felt missing out because of my puppy.
Hi Hannah I love your videos you never produce a bad video and I love u so much 💗
Why don't do podcast ate hannah? You're so good explaning and sharing things in life huhu 😭❤️✨
I'm planning to move out next year
