Other than a nice park (Canatara), Sarnia itself is pretty sad. Downtown is half abandoned and dead. The mediocre casino and bridge are actually in Point Edward, and Chemical Valley does provide jobs, but isn’t exactly where tourists go. The mall near Modeland Road is nothing special, but you could see a Sarnia Sting game. I’d love to see Sarnia rebound as the people are very nice and there is potential. I’ve done my best to support the businesses when I do visit.
No, but there is much less to do in winter than in summer as the area is very flat. No hills to speak of, so no skiing or Tobogganing. Lots of skidooing and cross country skiing. Summertime is when it is truly remarkable. Pre Covid there was a larger outdoor music festival every month, Artwalk downtown, boating, powerboat racing on the river, fishing, swimming, flying, lots of summertime RV parks. The oil museums in Petrolia, Oil City, and Mooretown are fascinating. Stag and Fawn Island in the St. Clair River are great places to visit for the day. Stones & Bones museum in Sarnia, Lambton Heritage Museum between Sarnia and Grand Bend. Lots of day trips throughout Lambton County.
I live here and the answer is Yes. They do nothing with the waterfront, the shows at the Imperial Theatre are for old ladies on bus trips and other than Ribfest in June, there's nothing to do in Sarnia. Nothing.
I grew up in Sarnia back in the 70’s. I still have one aunt and uncle that continue to live there. The rest of my family that were born, raised and stayed in Sarnia have all died of cancer. Every time I go back to visit, I’m sad and angry at what has become of the city. It’s a shell of what it once was. I would not raise my kids there. The petrochemical industry provides a level of toxicity to the air, water and ground unlike anywhere else in Canada. That’s why Sarnia has one of the highest cancer death rates of any city. Canatara Park is the one and only gem left in an otherwise devastated city. And maybe possibly Germain Park.
Devastated??? How is it devastated? How is it a shell of what it once was? Lambton College is far better now than it was in the 70s. It's now the number one Applied Technology College in the Country. Sarnia is voted as one of the top 21 intelligent cities in the world. The Research Park (former Dow Headquarters) is one of the best biotech and renewable energy incubators on the planet. The downtown is better now that it's been since the Eaton's mall opened 35 years ago killing the area. Because of the casino in Point Edward, the Point Edward waterfront is better than it's ever been. Tourism has never been better since they twinned the bridge. The Mitton Village is now getting the attention from Council that it needs. 3-4 years ago Nova announced a $2B expansion, which is nearing completion. Since then, a dozen other plants have started their own expansion projects to meet Nova's need. This is the biggest expansion in the valley since it opened in the 50s. I'm very sorry for your family loss. Yes, many workers get exposed to things in the valley that are detrimental to their health. That's why the pay is so high in the valley. Those original workers did not know the risks. Their families did not know the risks that were brought home on their work clothes. Most people working there now know the risks, so do their families. Plus, the safety standards are much higher now then they were back then. The risks to workers and their families is much less now. Again, I'm very sorry for your family loss, but perhaps that is why you feel Sarnia is now a shell of what it once was for you personally. But the city is doing better than it has in decades.
Yes, don't waste your time. It's beautiful by the water in the summertime, but unless you get ripped off by the fry trucks there's absolutely nothing to do but stare at the water.
I always pass through Sarnia to go across the border but now I want to stop in and actually explore it more !! Great vlog girl !
Yay! You should, there are so many fun spots.

I agree with you on this. But I have to say the waterfront looks nice. But on the other hand, once you get on front Street.... Yeah
