  • Just a bunch of boring long videos of me doing as many tests as I can think of to try and determine whether it's a stator issue or an inverter issue. As of right now I'm almost certain it's the inverter/control computer module at fault.
I'm not going to put a $411 inverter into it, so I'm probably just going to sell it with an honest description of the problems I'm experiencing and let someone else decide whether they want to use it "as-is" at lower wattages or try and fix it themselves. It won't do the job of running my travel trailer air conditioning, so it's no use to me as it operates currently.
At the end of the video you can see my WEN 2350 running the same tests and passing them with flying colors.
Too bad about the Honda, they're supposed to be the best. I'm a huge Honda fan, but this one has been marginal at best, especially since at this moment it has less than 10 hours of run time total . Seriously disappointing.

Hi thanks for posting. I have to dive into one of ours tomorrow. Some of our crews throw these around in the back of trucks like they are bags of potatoes. Don't know your location but we are up north of the border. While these little units are tough as nails for some older well used some helpful things I have found over the years. Won't start? Check fuel level and try starting with cap off. Those vents lose their performance. Tired of trying to hold choke on on a cold morning? I have used small O-rings and slipped over, around and underneath choke lever. Still moves freely but the lever will stay put where u want it. I tried the remote on off switch but deleted it and went back to original set up. We have all kinds of Honda engines about gx390, 620, 170 and on. Some Chinese clones as well. They ALL need the fuel turned off. Our guys just don't do it. Back to your video much appreciated. Take care.

Glad it helped. In the case of this little Honda, the problem isn't with the motor. But I'll never buy another generator without a way to run the carb dry before storage. And I completely agree with the fuel cap vent, I've found you have to crack the fuel cap open just a little bit to help get the gas back into the carb before starting. Makes a huge difference. I ended up taking this generator to a certified Honda generator repair shop, and I'll report their findings when I get them.

@@NoelBarlau I'm still back at the bastard! I have two gennies side by side on the bench. I'm using a heavy metabo hammer drill to test. The watts are around 547 on the good generator but only get to 165 on the bad. I tested the regulator (thanks BSK, although I think his leads were backwards on his diagram) and it checked out. I'm thinking the inverter. I thought I had found a test for the inverter, but I can't find it. Anyway, thanks again

Sorry, no. The official fix from Honda is to replace the entire power board.
