Fact check...the megaphone is used to distort Mitch’s voice to sound more like distortion on a guitar. Sorry to disappoint, but distortion, autotune, reverb, etc can be added anytime a mic is used...even live.

@@chuckt8457 only problem is, those of us with a musical ear can distinctly tell when there's auto tune being used... Mitch does not need it. You should see their live version of Daft Punk, they don't use any microphones and they sound the exact same.

It’s called lip syncing. Pre-recorded audio is played while lips are moved to appear as if they are singing. You’re probably too young to remember the singing duo Milli Vanilli.

    • @doriawayne2746
      @doriawayne2746 3 года назад +28

@@chuckt8457 In official video there's a distortion form megaphone, but in live performance, there's is no distortion, you can hear the difference. And near the end of official video, Mitch did another guitar solo, that's his voice without megaphone distortion. They sometimes use effects on their voices, that's not a secret, but they use them in a very limit amount, so when they performance it alive, they didn't lose the original feeling from the official video. And because the effects was so subtle, you won't even notice the differences most of the time.

You said in another video that you enjoy live performances. I highly recommend 'Gold', originally sung by Kiiara. The PTX music video is a 'live' version (they have several of these) and the post-production is quite light. They all shine in this, but Avi and especially Mitch take the cake in this one for me. I also highly recommend listening to the original first if you don't know it already, that's the best way to truly appreciate the brilliance of their arrangement (it's so smart!) and their vocal prowess.

My list of top ten Pentatonix songs every reactor should do (some you've already done):
    1. "Hallelujah" (with Avi as bass)
    2. "The Sound of Silence" or "Amazing Grace" (with Matt as bass)
Great songs, great arrangements, all four vocalists have solos that showcase them
    3. "Daft Punk" - their first *Grammy* win for best arrangement, and you'll see why. No added effects (and there's an off-mic performance to prove it). Their other two Grammys are "The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and "Jolene".
    4. "Bohemian Rhapsody"
    5. "Imagine" - beautiful arrangement with a strong message for these times
    6. "Evolution of Michael Jackson" (or any of their other *Evolution* videos. Pick your favorite artist) - these are medleys on steroid, *recorded live in the studio* in one continuous take, incredible transitions for 20+ songs in 6-7 minutes
    7. "Can't Sleep Love" (Popspring concert version) or "Coffee in Bed" - a taste of their *original music*
    8. "Aha" (Star Vista Singapore version) - an iconic concert performance. The combination of Mitch's highs and Avi's lows is out of this world.
    9. "Say Something" - a powerfully emotional rendition that showcases *Kirstin* as the lead. She usually sings harmonies or shares the lead with Scott and/or Mitch
    10. "Havana" - Kevin does Latin percussion here and the harmonies are just gorgeous.
If you want to go back to where they started as a band, you should react to their Sing-Off performances (12 judged performances). They were formed on the day before the audition of this a capella reality show, but even from their first performance, they were already pushing the boundaries of a capella. And then you'll see how they grew as a group, taking in and implementing the judges' comments, culminating in an explosive performance.
If you want their latest stuff to see where they are now, they just release a new album called "The Lucky Ones", featuring all original songs.
They have sold multiple-platinum-selling Christmas albums, and for good reason. Their arrangements of Christmas songs are either angelic ("Mary Did You Know") or inventive ("God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen").

That's not completely true. I saw an interview with Kevin and he said that they did electronically manipulate Mitch's voice to make it sound more like a guitar. That doesn't take anything away from Mitch-he still has to perform the riffs and runs, and he uses vocal techniques to mimic the guitar. I've heard this live, and without using any electronic help, he got very very close to the video.

Of course he was-they didn't do anything wrong. They also layered their voices-there are parts where Kevin is singing at the same time he is beat boxing. Obviously not possible. And also very ok. The guitar sound that he does without any vocal effects when performing live. Yes they used an effect in the studio to record it but he pretty much match’s the sound when he does it live. They have a behind the scenes to this. They did it in the middle of the night on a street. If you look real close you can see cars parked on the side of the road and some trees. They barely got it finished before the sun rose

The megaphone was just a dummy. Mitch did it all with his voice. There are live performances where he doesn't bother to hold the microphone and the sound is the same.

There's a Behind the Scenes video you would enjoy. They misjudged how adding the motor to the couch would affect its stability; it kept trying to tip over. There were a couple of minor accidents as a result. They had to put a step on the back of the couch so Mitch and Kirstin could get on it from behind (Scott didn't need the step). And you can see when Kirstin is standing on the couch to sing and Mitch joins her she has to give Mitch a hand up.
In the early days, after their record label dropped them just a week after they'd "won" the contract, a lot of their videos were just five very young people sitting together on a couch, singing their hearts out. So *this* couch is taking them on a trip down Memory Lane.
The starry night sky is a tribute to Brian May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics.
The four shooting stars are for the four members of Queen.
And the shot near the end of them lying on the couch all together is meant to reference the cover art of Queen's _Sheer Heart Attack_ album.
We frequently say that Pentatonix doesn't do covers; they do upgrades, and to a large extent that's true. But it's also true that Pentatonix *always* treats the original song and the original artists with utmost respect. Yes, they made "Bohemian Rhapsody" theirs, but they did not in any way make it any less Queen's.

Mitch does that same guitar solo on stage live without the megaphone. It was only used for volume, the sound was all him. You should watch The Making Off Bohemian Rhapsody. It shows how they made it in the middle of the night in freezing temps and it is quite comical watching them learn to "ride" the moving couch.

The joke says Avi (Avriel) came out of his mother's womb singing bass.
In truth, he has a great 5 octave range and when you add his polyphonic/overtone singing and his whistle voice, he goes way beyond 5 octaves,

Great reaction! Thought you'd like this one. They did make this their own, but there are some weird tributes to the original. When I first heard it, I wondered why Kirstie held out her note in "Let him go", and then I listened to the original, and sure enough, that high note was held out there, too! They have done this song live, and it sounds pretty good - not as crazy as the official video, but still amazing. The closest they get to rock in their originals is Love Again. It would be great to see your reaction to that.

I'm sure everyone has told you this but the megaphone was just a prop. Mitch does it with a regular microphone in concert. He was asked recently how to make guitar sounds and he said he "just winged it".
Also you will get tons of requests for aha! from Singapore at the star vista. Before you ask Kevin is putting away his cello from his cello boxing solo while the others are doing the choral part. Once Avi starts the song and blows one of the speakers lol Kevin is back. In that recording, the camera is trained only on Mitch with good reason. There is another one from Singapore that is also good. It just drives me crazy when new reactors watch it and are asking where Kevin is. Great reactions!!
