This is the story behind what you're watching: The previous song featured Kevin's cello, and he was backstage putting the cello away because he was not needed for the choral opening (Christus Factus Est) of Aha. He returned to the stage (not seen on camera) just as Avi hit that low note and started doing the beatboxing. Avi's note, by the way, caused damage to the Star Vista sound system. The person that shot this recorded the entire concert...and it's obvious from this point on thru the rest of the show that Avi had caused damage, so it's not just the mic on the camera. During a break shortly before this, Mitch (who was suffering from jet lag) drank two Red Bulls back-to-back off stage. As the group broke into Aha, Mitch's Red Bulls kicked in. As such, he proceeded to go completely INSANE on stage, as Avi continued to (rather joyously) shred the sound system in the background. And thus we have this, the live performance that most Pentaholics consider to be the best of the group's entire career! And it's made even more legendary by the fact that this fan-shot video is apparently the only recording of it in existence!!
Maybe I'm a bad person, because for me, Avi shredding the sound system is the best part of this video. I just love that, even more than Mitch going hyperactive in his upper register.
Avi blew the speakers, it wasn't the phone. And it wasn't his first, nor his last time. And Kevin was putting his chello away at first. After he stands next to Scott, just off screen. My favorite live recording is "Gold". It's a one take, live recording. Make sure to watch the original first to really appreciate their legendary arrangement and vocal abilities. Thanks for your reactions! Love them
Yes yes yes for the Gold cover! And I agree that you need to see the original "Gold" by Kiiara before you watch the Pentatonix cover; without the context of the original, you don't fully appreciate some of the bewildering technical work in the a cappella version.
Pentatolics say this is proof that PTX can do anything live that they do in the studio. Also this is an excellent show case of Avi and Mitch. Mitch’s vocal runs are amazing! Great reaction. Thanks
Yes PTX live is on point of their recording. Mitch can sing 6 plus 1(tone) Octaves. Most sites do not have that registered yet. Pure talent, Kevin one of the best beat boxing out there. In a league of their own
Mitch and Avi are just mesmerizing in this but Kirstie and Scott’s background is stupendous. I think Kevin said it’s one of the toughest beat he has had to come up with. Just amazing! 🤗
My favorite part of this video is right at 3:33 where you can just catch Scott having to scoot over to give Mitch room when he starts rocking out. His hand motion gets thrown off and he's just like "wtf dude?" 🤣 Apparently each of them gets a showcase song at their concerts and this is Mitch's, which is why he sang the whole song. Kevin's was the song before which is why he'd had his cello out. Also, I didn't see anyone mention that they added the intro bit specifically to give Kevin time.
Mitch forgot he was human, and Avi and Kevin killing it in the lows, and Kirstin and Scott just eating it up. Kevin was present, he went back to stage really quick at the beginning.
No red bull needed.. Pure talent. Mitch can sing 6 + 1 (tone) Octaves. Mitch stated in an interview he just let's all his thoughts/frustration out and free to be himself.
@@bobbie2639 But he actually DID drink two Red Bulls back-to-back offstage shortly before this to combat jet lag, and they kicked in...well...it's OVIOUS where they kicked in.
Oh, yes, yes! The acoustics in that cathedral (in Germany, I think?) are amazing, and their arrangement is so sweet. (Of course, I'm an Avi girl, so I may be biased, but "Silent Night" is one of their all-time best.)
@@janetranslates I'm an Avi girl too, one of my favorites! Avi's voice is so smooth. I love Light in the Hallway, Avi leads on that one, so beautiful! Scott wrote the song, but wanted Avi to lead.
Kevin was there. He was putting away his cello at the beginning of the video but he joins in right after Avi's low note. Mitch's high notes are effortless. I usually have a hard time understanding lyrics when sung at a higher pitch but not Mitch. His vocals are crystal clear. For some live performances check out a few of my favorites - Evolution of Rhianna, Evolution of Ariana Grande, Top Pop Vol. 1 Medley, and Gold.
This is one of my all time favorites of Mitch performing ~~ He was " on fire" that show! Amazing!! Two wonderful live songs featuring Avi are "Standing By" and " Light in the Hallway "
I Need Your Love on the season 4 finale of the Sing Off is another great live performance by them. It was 2 years after they won and the difference is amazing. You can really see how much they grew in that time.
Other live performances from them "Gold" by Kiiara, (But make sure you have listened to Kiiara first, to hear how talented they are), "Popspring 2016"!!!!
Just to add to the comments from the live premiere, Christus Factus Est is the opening piece (often referred to by pentaholics as the "Opera opening") which Avi was familiar with and gave time for Kevin to put away his cello. I know everyone loves this video, for obvious reasons, but you may wish to search Pentatonix Aha with Opera Opening for other live recordings that have less audio problems.
The power of a contratenor. That's the fullness of the high notes from Mitch. He's not just any normal tenor, he's a contratenor or counter tenor, which is a rarer breed. As someone simplified it by called it in essence a soprano tenor.
I think you would enjoy watching their tour videos. Lots of them just goofing off, having fun, chilling, and performing. It really shows their little family well.
Any song from this performance is 🔥! Telephone is another fan favorite! I’m sure some Red Bulls were involved! Kirstin & Scott were holding down the mid range harmonies flawlessly!
I must say ...that was a great reaction! Your eyes show so much expression. This is one of my favorites. Yes on Avi reactions esp. Change on the Rise! I watch his live feeds bc he has such a beautiful bass tone and can reach my inner being. Thanks.
Adam Lambert is another one that can comfortably live in that super high register...he blows me away every time , HOWEVER i truly believe now much more than Adam that Mitch is my spirit animal! EVERYTHING about him i am just IN LOVE with!!! His passion, his vocals, unique sense of style (especially with the hair
@@ms_scribbles Well the live one was certainly interesting to watch, but I didn't pick up a single word he sang. I understand it's a minuscule cell phone mic, but still, I need to hear the words of songs to appreciate them.
Oh yes, please!!! Avi's solo stuff is amazing! He's gone back to his roots which is more folk-flavored, rather than pop. His side gig while still with PTX was a group called Avriel and the Sequoias, and they put out some amazing stuff. Since he left PTX, he's gone really on his own, and the newer stuff is great too. He had a livestream a couple weeks back and included 2 new ones in the set...he'll be dropping those before too long as well.
When Avi started his beginning solo, Mitch and Scott moved closer to Kirsty and Kevin came on stage at the end opposite Avi but you never see him. The fan was Mitch obsessed and only focused on him. Kevin had been putting "Beyonce", his cello, back in it's case.... he was doing the beat boxing, not Scott.
I've been waiting for this one. 😂 Part of what you're hearing in this one is also Avi's lowest notes along with the overtones at the same time. He's magic. 🤗
Thank you!! I have watched so many reactions to this video and not ONE reactor has given Scott credit for the beat boxing. Everyone says that Kevin was backstage doing it, but u can clearly see that Scott is beat boxing. He truly is amazingly talented, and so are the others.
You know how sometimes time goes on and you forget how amazing something is? That's how this is for me. It pops back up into my feed every now and again when someone reacts and I'm reminded of the genius. Thanks for reacting and bringing this back!
The opening was Christus Factus Est by Anton Bruckner. I'm not sure who came up with that idea to start it, but I'm sure Avi would have known about it, because that opening is one of the great things for a bass to do in any chorus (take it from someone who has done it more than a few times). And yes, Avi, blew the speaker as he did more than a few times.
It was Avi who came up with the idea of starting with Christus Factus Est because, as you said, he had performed it with Fermata Nowhere, and he thought it would be a cool intro for Aha!
Avi really gets to show off his classical/operatic training in this one. Say what you will. PTX will never have that depth, warmth, resonance and richness with Avi gone. He took it with him.
He really did. As much as i love mitch, avis stuff in the beginning is by far my favourite part. His training really shines there. Kinda sad how underused he was most of the time.
I know I'm late to the party just subscribed. One of my favorite live ones is their cover of robyn dancing on my own. It was after avi left and before matt so kevin is playing the cello.
That's why we miss Avi ❤️ In one video someone suggested we call this video "where's Kevin?" Hahaha 😂 Kevin was there, he had a solo before this so the harmonizing at the beginning was actually waiting for Kevin to return, right before Avis' low, Kevin returns.
Jo-Anne LeBel yeah take Jo-Anne’s advice. Start from the beginning and watch em all! And remember, the 1st performance on the Sing-Off is the first time all five of them ever performed together!
This is the Avi and Mitch show. Which includes an Avi gut kick and the ultimate Mitch slap. Kevin was there. Avi did blow a speaker and yes, the cell phone couldn't handle the low notes. The person filming really did focus only on Avi and Mitch, and you saw why.
No, Kevin was there, he was on the other side of Scott. The beginning hymnal they were doing was to give Kevin time to put his cello away then get back to them for Aha! If you watch it again, right before Avi does his thing with that low part, they show the four on stage then zoom into Avi, you see Mitch and Scott turn and move over, closer to Kirsty, to make room on the end for Kevin. He is doing all those wicked beatboxing sounds. The person filming was just focused on Mitch. LOL. For a good stripped down, live, check out PTX doing Daft Punk in the Green Room in front of a few people, near the bathroom. LOL.
Also, when they performed this in concert when Kevin didn't need to be putting Beyonce away, he would be standing, silent, next to Scott on stage, his arms to his sides. "Christ's Factus Est" was chosen by Avi to lead into "Aha!", as he'd performed it with his college chamber choir and knew it would be awesome (they no longer use it since he's left), and because Kevin is the only one of the 5 that didn't have classical choral training, he does not sing in the intro. Oh, and Avi was an opera major in college, trained as a Basso Profundo, and had been offered a position with the Los Angeles Opera just before he was recruited into Pentatonix. Not too shabby, eh?
If you want to see a fantastic live performance by them, watch their performance of Little Drummer Boy on the old Arsenio Hall show. Not only is it live but I personally think it's better than their official video of the song. One of the reasons it is so good is that the sound engineers for Arsenio's show knew what they were doing and got the audio mixing just right, which is something that just doesn't happen on most live performances.
Yep, noticed Mitch got much closer to Kirsten? Person recording was all about Mitch. Lol Live - check out this one. As live as live can be. This was captured at a private party. No mics, editing, etc. ruclips.net/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/видео.html
@@ms_scribbles Never said it wasn’t worthy. It was the person taking the video choice to what they recorded. No need to mansplain my comment, it was clear to begin with.
My favorite comment is from Anessa Lyn: “I have 2 questions for you? You awake now? How's your heart? Avi blew the speakers, Mitch took off the roof. But him on the floor moving towards the audience, you know guys and girls in the front row probably needed CPR.”
One of my favorite live performances is when they did Sweater Weather on the Late Late Show. That said, I absolutely love their cover of Gold by Kiiara. But I will second the suggestion that you should react to the original first to truly appreciate what they (primarily Mitch 😀) are able to do.
You should definitely check out Avi's stuff. He is amazing. And he did many of his songs live and stripped back only with his guitar. Looking forward to it. 😊
Not sure if my comment on your "Pentatonix - Sound of Silence" reaction had anything to do with you making this video. That being said, I have got to commend you on staying up to date with fan requests. There's a bunch of RUclips reaction channels, but almost none of them; 1. Give decent quality reactions that are genuine 2. Actually listen to their fans and explore music outside of their preferred genre(s) . Trust me man, you're killing it and deserve way more subscribers than you have.
If you haven't heard it already, i believe there's a live version of their original song "On My Way Home." Worth a listen, if only for Mitch's beautiful chest-note singing, as well as Avi's legendary lows.
Some other PTX live recommendations (the stuff that helped get them where they are): From The Sing Off - Born to be Wild, Dog Days Are Over. Not live, but a track that (IMO) Kirstie really shines, and the arrangement is really great, Rather Be. Also not live - but to hear how amazing they all are together with a really spectacular arrangement is the studio version of this track (Aha!). Video is fun, too.
Some years ago at a live concert here in St. Louis, Avi hit a note so low and strong, he blew the mains! BTW: Scott does the fill in low notes, not Kevin
Zero effort by Mitch. It’s so crazy. It looks like he’s having a blast. And Avi’s note. I didn’t know a voice could blow a speaker like that. Thought it was just instruments. 😮😮
Hey Alli! I’m so blown away by this performance. I’m super jealous of both their voices 😆 I sang in a Metallica tribute band for a few years and I’m about 1/1,000,000th the singer that Avi or Mitch are 😂
@@MetalGuyReacts they really know their voices like an actual instrument. Like I imagine someone like Eric Clapton or Slash knows how to really play every facet of a guitar. Bringing out intricate beautiful sounds we’d never think of. They both use their voices so perfect and effortlessly. (As do the rest of them in PTX)
Avi suggested this intro and it shows off his Basso Profundo training. He blew his speaker because he and Mitch are supposed to do a little battle but Avi's bass is distorted. Kevin joins in a few minutes late as he was putting his cello away. Mitch let's his hair down much to the joy of the audience lol Kevin is standing beside Scott doing the beatboxing....but the person filming has eyes only for Mitch lol
As much as I love being Mitch slapped, and I do, I love when Avi hits notes so low he blows out speakers. You can check out this video for Hit the Road Jack as reference! ruclips.net/video/eeHRokYRVms/видео.html
If you want to listen to some Avi stuff (and you're right -- it's all good), I recommend Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair. He did that while he was still in Pentatonix, so it's not new. It's just him and Peter Hollens, so there's a lot of layering. But the song, the harmonies, the arrangement is just amazing, and the agility Avi shows that low in his range blows me away every time I hear it.
Avi had a habit of blowing auditorium speakers when they performed in concert. And Kevin was there. This is the beginning of the concert. They start with Kevin playing cello, then he goes offstage to hand the cello off. You'll notice at the beginning of this video, the center of the stage is empty. By the time the song starts, Mitch and Scott have moved over to their right. Kevin is on the other side of Scott. And if you listen closely, this is one of their songs that has some of the fastest beatboxing. Scott could cover a beat if they needed him to, but he could never bb that fast and crisp. That's how you know - at least audibly, since the video doesn't pan out enough to show him - that Kevin's there.
How do you know about the RedBulls? It would make sense though. Mitch looked hyped up (in a good way of course)
Maybe I'm a bad person, because for me, Avi shredding the sound system is the best part of this video. I just love that, even more than Mitch going hyperactive in his upper register.

There needs to be a name for Mitch fans. Not just Pentaholics, but specific Mitch fans. Is there one?
Whatever happened to Scomiche?
Mitch’s Minions?
I thought we were Mitch Bitches. 😁
@@ms_scribbles I like it!!!
Yep, noticed Mitch got much closer to Kirsten? Person recording was all about Mitch. Lol
Live - check out this one. As live as live can be. This was captured at a private party. No mics, editing, etc. ruclips.net/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/видео.html
Well, I mean, it was Mitch's song to lead, so I can't imagine they'd focus on anyone else but the lead.
@@ms_scribbles Never said it wasn’t worthy. It was the person taking the video choice to what they recorded. No need to mansplain my comment, it was clear to begin with.
Check out the live version of "Light in The Hallway" Someone captured Avi's last performance with that song.
Hearing Mitch here makes me want to see you do some Brendan Urie reactions. I'd LOVE to see (hear) those two sing together!
There's a live version of their Daft Punk Medley. You need to see that.
My favorite comment is from Anessa Lyn: “I have 2 questions for you? You awake now? How's your heart? Avi blew the speakers, Mitch took off the roof. But him on the floor moving towards the audience, you know guys and girls in the front row probably needed CPR.”
If You haven’t checked out their Pop Spring concert. It is a great live performance🤩🤩🤞🏻🤞🏻
One of my favorite live performances is when they did Sweater Weather on the Late Late Show. That said, I absolutely love their cover of Gold by Kiiara. But I will second the suggestion that you should react to the original first to truly appreciate what they (primarily Mitch 😀) are able to do.
Please react to Gold. It's just them on the couch
Mitch is called a counter tenor!
You should definitely check out Avi's stuff. He is amazing. And he did many of his songs live and stripped back only with his guitar. Looking forward to it. 😊
Gold. Yes. Their cover of Gold is a Mitch highlight too. :)
Not sure if my comment on your "Pentatonix - Sound of Silence" reaction had anything to do with you making this video. That being said, I have got to commend you on staying up to date with fan requests. There's a bunch of RUclips reaction channels, but almost none of them;
1. Give decent quality reactions that are genuine
Kevin was really sick when they were in Singapore, so he probably had to take a break. Scott can beat box also.
Defying gravity by superfruit highlights mitchs voice too
There is a private performance of daft punk somewhere
Yes, DO check out Avi's solo work!
This is one of my favorites.... and I like the official of this song too ... although it doesn’t have this intro... it has a Halloween 👻 feel to it
Great reaction!
It seemed to me, like the camera phone mic of the person recording this was having trouble with Mitch's high notes as well!! =)
You should listen to Cracked.
You want too watch there video of this Aha too ❤
If you want to listen to some Avi stuff (and you're right -- it's all good), I recommend Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair. He did that while he was still in Pentatonix, so it's not new. It's just him and Peter Hollens, so there's a lot of layering. But the song, the harmonies, the arrangement is just amazing, and the agility Avi shows that low in his range blows me away every time I hear it.
I love your reactions!!! Kevin put his cello away and the fan was obsessed with Mitch so Kevin wasn’t in the shot.
If you haven't, you need to check out the produced version of this song. It's so amazing when it's not clipping.
Sorry but nobody can do Kevin like Kevin. Only one K.O.
Avi has literally blown speakers at live shows
