    They're not really ghost ships. They are in what's called warm layup, meaning there's still a small crew onboard and the engine room is still active. They do this because it's very expensive to prep a ship for cold layup (everything shut down) so that the ship doesn't deteriorate. Incidentally, they periodically do have to head out to sea to empty their grey water tanks and run their water makers, neither of which can be done in harbor.

    The reason the Queen Mary 2 looks different is because it's an ocean liner, not a cruise ship. :) Yes, she is being used as a cruise ship, but it did also some transatlantic crossings. I do miss those elegant designs tho.

    A few years ago I was crewing on a tour boat operating in Milford Sound, New Zealand. Part of my job was to crew this 40m boat for "cruise ship transfers" as they were called. In these transfers, we were the "tender," carrying cruise ship passengers either ship to shore or shore to ship. Stuff as large as the Royal class was coming in, and once alongside, our 40m boat became merely a toy in a bath. You could also tell the passengers weren't impressed by our dinghy - brand new refit that year and she still wasn't up to their standard! The sheer size and quality of these ships is astonishing.
    These ships can hold position, in immense weather, without dropping anchor. This is a useful tool in Milford, where it is quite common to get winds in excess of 60 knts. They do have to rotate on the spot in higher winds, however. One particularly wet, cold and windy day in Milford, one such ship was doing just this, and just as the last passenger crossed the gangway onto our boat we were rotated to face the wind. About 40knts peeled us away from the cruise ship, and we only just managed to drop our spring off them before they were out of range of our boathook. They shut their sea door and continued like nothing happened. We went straight for a stiff drink back in harbour.
    Milford Sound got the last laugh though. Even these massive units of steel and luxury are dwarfed by the mountains surrounding the place. Mother Nature has Humanity in one serious check-mate there.

    Being from Southampton. It was a common thing to see QE2 or Canberra growing up. Saw them leave and return from the Falklands in 82. Managed to get on-board Canberra the day after she returned. My step dad was a docker 50 yrs, myself 4yrs (94 to 98) when left the Army. He was working on board unloading equipment, I got to sit in the Pig (crews bar), I got spoilt rotten all day, with a breakfast, lunch, cans of coke and sweets, and watching TV and films. I was off school ill, and mum was working also. So Dad took me in. A Cruiseship/Liner alongside 38 Berth or the other designated Berths. Although we were Stevedore/Dockers in the Container Berth, now and then if the rest of Port was short handed we'd work other vessels. Ill never forget working baggage on a cruise ship. Always managed a tour with the OOD (Officer of the Day). Then the bigger vessels slowly were launched. The 3 new Queens (QM2, QE, QV), have the mix of old school charm and beauty up forward and aft. With the block of flats new look in-between. So they are still nice. The new ones are just floating boxes. They do look ugly some of them. But there is no denying the Engineering and Technology that goes into a modern Vessel, even Commercial Ships like Container Ships which have quadrupled in size compared to the first container ships I worked on in the mid 90s. If someone said to me as a kid that Cruise ships will be over 220,000 plus tonnes in the next 30/40 yrs, I'd have laughed. No here they are. Have you seen the pic with a modern cruise ship behind the Titanic. I wonder what that pic would look like in 100 yrs with a ship behind the modern ones today.
    I love the old vessels, as they were like a woman wearing a ball gown. The new ones are like a woman wearing Praia. Still exquisite but not in the same class. A mad sight was usually bank holiday weekends, as sometimes 5 off them behemoths were in Port the the same. Really changed the whole city skyline.

    When you think of the beautiful lines of ships like P&O's now gone Canberra, and look at the cruise ships of today that look more like hotels stuck on powered barges. It is rather sad. At least the QM2 looks like a ship built to cross the North Atlantic.

    • @douglaspealing5608
      @douglaspealing5608 2 года назад

      @@brendanoneil3489 Yes you are correct. the anchor obviously needs to hold, but it's the weight of the chain that does the work really. You think how hard it would be to pull that chain tight to the point of being straight. It's an immense amount of force needed. It therefore not only holds the boat, but also acts as a shock damper on the anchor itself, meaning it won't get jerked out from the seabed. If you want more holding, put out more chain.

    For those who are offended by the term "Bollocks", here is one meaning - From the 17th to the 19th century, bollocks or ballocks was allegedly used as a slang term for a clergyman, although this meaning is not mentioned by the OED's 1989 edition. For example, in 1684, the Commanding Officer of the Straits Fleet regularly referred to his chaplain as "Ballocks". It has been suggested that bollocks came to have its modern meaning of "nonsense" because some clergymen were notorious for talking nonsense during their sermons. According to Merriam Webster the term has been used before the 12th century.

    I saw the QM2 berthed in Liverpool one time. As I was driving along the waterfront past the 3 graces I thought a 4th building had been erected until I realised it was the super structure of a ship. She’s absolutely massive. The bridge is 200 something feet above the waterline.

    I understand the complaints about the "apartment look" that some are expressing but if they didn't build them like that then I never could have afforded the cruise I went on and thoroughly enjoyed. Yes, the cruise line makes more money but it also drops the cost for customers a lot. If all cruise ships were the Queen Mary II I can assure you I and many others couldn't afford it.

    Saw the thumbnail and had a moment of panic. Got to go on the QM2 in her maiden year with my grandparents. We got upgraded to one of the suites at the bow that included half a row of the windows on the arched front. Really awesome to see the Caribbean pass beneath the bows from the comfort of a private room.

    They are not abandoned. They are all staffed with a Captain, engineer and a small crew complement. The Queen Mary II does not look like the other cruise ships because it is not a cruise ship. It is a transatlantic ship. Much different hull design.

Shame you can't get over to Poole Bay, as currently 'Allure of the Seas' is anchored there, and that would make all them ships look small, even QM2!!
