I worked as a broker / salesman / IT in the yacht brokerage world for many years in the 90s and 00s, the one thing I learned above all else was never buy your own boat, borrow someone else's. Portofino was a superb boat I borrowed one a few times, the Princess V 40s were better quality though in the day. Dunno what Sunseeker are like now I have not been on anything more glamorous than a fishing boat for years now. Interesting video, brought back some good memories.
Thank you, love the fact that you are honest about engine and floor. Most if all telling it as it is £33k to run a 47 foot boat as a ball park figure. This takes nothing away from the boat but shows real professional sales from a professional sales company. Its clear you want people to be able to both buy and run there boats. Don't worry about the helm as other boat RUclipsrs can talk about them.
Ah thanks for your nice comments Jaffa. I try to tell you all the same things as if you were viewing the boat to buy her. I think it’s important you know the good and the bad. JB

He can make that table disappear, but the boat will make your money vanish even faster. 😄 I’ve have about 10 years of experience with motor yachts, mainly between 60 to 70 feet, typically powered by twin MAN V12 engines. Owning a motor yacht is an incredible experience, but the costs can be overwhelming. In the marina world, everything seems to cost double. A water pump that’s €600 online might be €1200 at a harbor store in France. Why? Because they can. When your pump breaks, you need a quick replacement, and they know it. It’s a “millionaire’s world,” and everyone offering services is charging premium rates. The service can often be poor, and unless you manage the people working on your boat, you’ll end up wasting both time and money. Fuel is another big expense. Diesel prices are sky-high at marinas simply because they know boat owners will pay. A 70-foot motor yacht can have 3000-liter fuel tanks, meaning it costs over €6000 to fill up. The twin MAN V12 engines can burn around 350 liters per hour at a cruising speed of 24 knots. Add to that the fuel consumption of the generator, and you’re looking at €300 a day for the generator and 1000€ for the engines a day. If you’re cruising 15 days a month, that’s about €8000 in diesel alone. Insurance runs around €6000 a year, and if you want to hire a captain, it’s about €4500 per month, plus a deckhand at €3500 per month during the season. Without help, you’ll be spending your holiday working rather than relaxing. If something breaks, like your swim platform in the middle of the season, it can easily ruin your entire holiday, and repairs could cost €30k or more. Things like this happen all the time. At the end of the season, it's best to haul the boat out, which costs around €1500, and putting it in covered storage can be as much as €2600 a month for 8 months. Repainting the hull will cost another €6000, and during this time, you’ll likely get a long list of "necessary" repairs that could total €145k You’ll need to be there in person to verify what's real. Annual maintenance like oil changes, impellers, pumps, and filters will easily run you €25k. If you’re mooring in Ibiza, a 70-foot berth costs €80k a year, and in Antibes, it’s €40k. To be completely honest, owning a 70-foot yacht requires millionaire status just to keep up with the constant expenses. Whether it's a new or old boat, the costs are crazy, and they don't stop in winter. On top of all that, there’s always the chance of damage from other boats or bad weather, which happens often. I owned a 65-foot motor yacht with MAN engines, and despite perfect maintenance, the yearly cost, including berth, crew, and diesel, ranged from €150k to €200k. And don’t forget taxes on top of that. My advice: charter a yacht, don’t buy one. If I have to do it all over? I will do it again 😂😂😂. What a great time me and my family had sailing boats. And we will continue to do so. ❤

Brilliant. I’ll be keeping an eye on your stock, id buy a boat from you guys over the phone based on your word alone. More vids!!
Great Vid! Thanks for the math. I spent some time converting to US Dollars, and it still makes sense. I'm sold on Sunseekers, just because of the looks. Shoot, I've spent so much on boats in my life, (and by the way, not a penny wasted) My next boat will be a Sunseeker.
Lovely boat and one of my favourites at this size, I didn't know you had one, but two things for me as regards the engines and the V drive is that the setup is less fuel efficient than a straight shaft and that doing any stern gland work is very time consuming and thus more costly than other boats, one final thing that people either forget or ignore is that the high low platform also requires maintenance otherwise it could end up sticking when you least want it , yet more cost. Any boat of this size costs about the £30000 mark to maintain , my personal advice would be to put at least £5000 per annum to one side to cover repairs or breakages, she is over 12 years old now after all. Great video BTW and the sound is spot on now. :)

Great video! Owned a 48 1991 Searay for 15 years. These numbers are certainly close. I don’t sail as much anymore, (probably 20 hours/year) but fuel and maintenance are tied to each other. Less fuel, less maintenance. The rest is fixed. I budget 20000 but in Portugal which is cheaper. Also I don’t do enough maintenance because it’s difficult to find for a Searay in Portugal. My toes curled at the mention of finance - I was fortunate enough to have the money to buy mine outright. The boat will depreciate as fast as the value of the loan. It’s scary. I never would have bought my boat on finance. Really the numbers to look at are the operating costs. You have to have that money and be comfortable to burn it annually. Otherwise this is really not for you. It will drive you mad and miserable.
From James' illustration with the 20 pound notes AND his video shot of how close together the engine/V-box/shaft mechanicals are located, another V-drive negative becomes obvious: a less horizontal shaft angle. Couple that with the V-drive mechanicals to service, and one REALLY has to want that larger aft cabin.
Thanks for your no BS comments James I am in Aus (Bris) and nearing a total upgrade of a 45 Carver converting your money to Ausie $ is about right.. It is great to buy second hand (at the right price)-V drives not for me!....thanks again!

What a brilliant review ! I can't afford to service the the toilets on this boat, let alone worrying about v drives and what not. But when I can afford it - I'll be listening to James.
Thank you for giving us a true and honest review of this boat. Many people don't seem to point out any flaws in their reviews. If sunseeker compromised on the floors and engines, which is visible, I wonder if they also compromised on things like the hull and stringers to save money.
£33k might be ball park for running a 47 footer in the UK, but here in the Balearic Islands you can add another £20k for berthing costs! However, we can boat and swim for 7 months from April until at least the end of October, which will make the cost per day used lower.....
Have just watched this video, I’m would never be able to own a boat and don’t wish to, having said that this was a very interesting video on ownership and running cost, you confirmed my thoughts, very enjoyable video. 👍
Great and amusing video. It has made me realize, looking at the numbers, that If I saved; and budgeted, really well, I still could not afford this boat.
I can only afford a kayak but I do like watching these channels..the reason I prefer this to Aquaholic is it feels less like a salesman is doing it as he just says everything is wonderful (probably to get boat companies to let him inevitably positive reviews…but this channel really seems more open about the reality of boating..
Great video James. As always loving your honesty and for sure this is a great boat……but still not a Princess!!! And agree on your estimate of annual costs-we have a V45 so not dissimilar overall and reckon that our is costing us around 30k a year without any finance.
As Nick Burnham reckons he runs his boat in a council marina for about 7k a year it seems costs double for every extra foot, certainly costs a great deal extra to dash along at 20+ knots compared to 7 knots in a semi displacement boat.
hello Alan, how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health. Looking for a new friend and i saw your pic here. I hope you don't mind thank you.
I have a 33ft carver motor yacht. Berth cost €1600 Engine maintanance €1500 Painting €1000 Fuel €1000 ---‐---------------- Total: €5100 per year. So go just a bit smaller and your cost will go down significantly. I'm on my boat weekly, but I only sail for 15 minutes to a nice spot to anker the whole day. So fuelcost could differ for your purpose. I was always scared for the cost, but in practice a 33ft boat is very manageble. For me buying a boat was one of the best decisions of my life.
Fantastic info and video Looks like your mic gain is correct, but the audio in the video editing software itself should be boosted (good quality turned up is better than bad source quality at a high volume!) Thanks for all the genuine perspective on real world ownership, it is very helpful

Ah thank you. If you have the information you can make a better choice 🥳
£33k might be ball park for running a 47 footer in the UK, but here in the Balearic Islands you can add another £20k for berthing costs! However, we can boat and swim for 7 months from April until at least the end of October, which will make the cost per day used lower.....
Yes I agree Jon- just come back from Mallorca- very expensive but very very nice 😊
Have just watched this video, I’m would never be able to own a boat and don’t wish to, having said that this was a very interesting video on ownership and running cost, you confirmed my thoughts, very enjoyable video. 👍
Nice to see the full picture of boat ownership. I really liked the honesty and so became a subscriber. 👍👏
Thanks Lambourne. Much simpler saying it how it is 👍🏻
It was at that time, when you did the cost breakdown, that I realised I will only ever own a jetski!. Nice video thanks
Honest, sincere, professional and quite funny vid. Lots of respect, sir.
Thanks Wolfhorsky 🙏
First time on the channel and I've learned more about boats and the cost of running them than I have anywhere else 👍
Ah thanks Richard 🙏
Great and amusing video. It has made me realize, looking at the numbers, that If I saved; and budgeted, really well, I still could not afford this boat.
😂
Great video, especially the running costs explained
Great summary of this lovely vessel , very engaging and knowledgeable gent , thanks very much !

@@joebryan2830 that's true
Great honesty...Many thanks! Out of my league for sure.
I can only afford a kayak but I do like watching these channels..the reason I prefer this to Aquaholic is it feels less like a salesman is doing it as he just says everything is wonderful (probably to get boat companies to let him inevitably positive reviews…but this channel really seems more open about the reality of boating..
@@k956upg ah thank you 🙏.
Most honest boat salesman ever!
Ah thank you 😊
Lovely boat and that’s a good honest overview... 👍🏻
Another great tour, which was also enlightening. Had to turn the volume on the TV up though! 😂😜
Will sort the volume 😂
Brilliant reviews, great openness about costs is really useful 🙂
nice little boat, good presentation of the costs.
Great video James. As always loving your honesty and for sure this is a great boat……but still not a Princess!!! And agree on your estimate of annual costs-we have a V45 so not dissimilar overall and reckon that our is costing us around 30k a year without any finance.
Thanks Peter . More Princess models coming up ! 😊
Do icemakers break down a lot because people keep sitting on them?
Loving your channel, I don't know if its just me , but even with the volume turned up to full . I still find the voice very soft.
We will try and fix
As Nick Burnham reckons he runs his boat in a council marina for about 7k a year it seems costs double for every extra foot, certainly costs a great deal extra to dash along at 20+ knots compared to 7 knots in a semi displacement boat.
It is nice though 😊
hello Alan, how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health. Looking for a new friend and i saw your pic here. I hope you don't mind thank you.
Love the honesty over cost. If you can’t afford £33k cash burn I’ve got ones with very little cash burn……..but they’ve got oars !!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Hi James. Honest, practical and humour video. Its good imfomation for a potential buyer comparison to fairline, princess. Great video thanks 😊
Great video, the humour makes it. brilliant to see a video like this that's local! Even sold the top man there some bits today
Ah thanks David 🤩
The two happiest days of a boat owners life is the day he takes delivery and the day he sells it 😂😂
@@nicke6394 to buy a bigger one 😂
Great video and love the honesty!
About 30 years ago someone said to me a boat costs 10% of its cost to run each year. Still not a million miles out.
Your numbers are correct running costs = 10% of the buying cost
Thank you for all your knowledge sharing. With 10k of salary I think I can get one close to this
Brilliant. Old shool salesman. Honest and on the ball. Great review 👏
Thanks Ricardo 🤩
The happiest 2 days in a boat owner’s life: the day you buy the boat and the day you sell it….😂
@@278952 and buy the next one 😂
Thank you - brings my scope creep back into line again - but please use that simplistic costing model for all reviews
Ok I could add the sums to the vids - taxes my brain though 😂
Thank you so much for your honest review. I have a 80 meter luxury boat, Joking. but i will look into a boat with oars.
Nice to see somebody is on front street in regards of cost. I just realised that my ambition to own a Sunseeker fell to dingy level.
You can run it cheaper with lower maintenance and a cheaper berth. Maybe £10k less.
I have a 33ft carver motor yacht.
Berth cost €1600
Engine maintanance €1500
Painting €1000
Fuel €1000
---‐----------------
Total: €5100 per year.
@@benchokwaiman yes we agree 😎
Excellent honest review. More please.
Will do 🥳
Fantastic info and video
Looks like your mic gain is correct, but the audio in the video editing software itself should be boosted (good quality turned up is better than bad source quality at a high volume!)
Thanks for all the genuine perspective on real world ownership, it is very helpful
Yes you are right- we are fixing for next video 😊
First time comment.
Excellent review and I loved your honesty is this vid thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks Kevin 🥳
I appreciate the honesty and its quite a fun review. Cheers!
Thanks Patrick - got to have fun 🤩
Great video. Always interesting to know. Sound is much better. Cheers.
Ah thank you 🙏
Great video, easy to watch and good bit of banter! Subbed
Thank you Luke !
Daddy Jimmy B🤗 Stumbling across your channel was one of the most pleasant surprises to me recently! A rare _thank you_ note to the RUclips recommendations 😊
Thanks Kataro! Glad you are enjoying it ! We will continue to bring you some fun and interesting boat reviews and videos. We love showing you the boats 😍
Great video and really good info. Keep this type of content coming please as enjoy the boat reviews.
Thanks Crazy Jay . Will do 😊
Does the v-drive result in mechanical losses? And therefore denting fuel consumption figures?
Nice presentation btw 👍
I was about to take the plunge until you mentioned the plywood floor! Even my Bayliner 175 has a glass floor liner! :)
Nice style of review. I've just subscribed and am going to look through your other videos. Thanks!
Thanks Nick S - they are lovely boats - don’t let the floor put you off. All boats have little things you might change 😊
Change out the floor.
I don't know if you have experience or not, but I'd like a similar video about running costs for a sailboat in this category (sub 50 foot).
Great you are honest.👍
Sir I hope everyone Honest like you you’re right the boat is beautiful if we can afford it thank you so much and God bless you
Bottom line, annual costs work out at around 10 - 15% of the purchase price.
That's some real straight talk
Love the honesty about the ice maker and his comment about his "unfit body" was hilarious. I like how he doesn't take himself so serious like a lot of Dou'che bag boat people
I’m going after a cheaper boat after finally convincing the other half and I’m honestly shocked at how affordable it really is. I want a boat like this, not this one but same vein but have to prove myself first haha! Nice to know that if the time comes 🤞we could swing it! Probably still want more of a project that consumes my every waking moment but then I’d probably be divorced and have to live in it!
