  • In this video, I’m going to show you how to create Actions for pattern design in Adobe Illustrator! These Illustrator actions can really help to speed up your pattern design workflow! Illustrator Actions allow you to record sets of tasks and individual actions that you perform regularly. So that when you find yourself having to perform those tasks again, you won’t have to go through all the steps again. You’ll already have saved set of actions ready to go with the click of a button! Want to learn how to use them? Watch the entire video to learn how!
In this video we’ll actually be creating an ENTIRE SET of Illustrator actions specifically for a 3 inch x 3 inch pattern repeat. I’d love it if you would FOLLOW ALONG WITH ME so you can create the entire set for yourself. You can grab your own design elements and FOLLOW ALONG with me! Since we will be creating several actions, it will be great practice so you can really get the hang of Illustrator actions!
Although we’ll be making an actions set specifically for a 3 inch x 3 inch pattern repeat, once you learn how to use the actions, you will be able to create actions that are catered towards YOUR type of artwork. You can use the principles you learn in this video and apply them to creating actions for any repeat sizes that you usually use later on.
This lesson is useful for any designer, because there are definitely tasks that we all repeat over and over again. But you know which tasks those are for you. So everyone should learn how to create their own actions so they can cater them to their specific type of work.
Also, this lesson includes a way to create your own custom keyboard shortcuts using Actions!
*** There is a lot packed into this video and therefore it’s a bit long. You can watch it in parts if you can’t watch it all at once. But if you’re watching in parts, please make sure to SAVE the actions that you have completed. You can go to timecode 23:51 to see how to save your actions (.aia file). So if you have to stop at any point, just save them so you won’t lose them and you can resave when you add more actions to your actions set later on.
**Just wanted to add a note about the first action we create at timecode 2:12- when recording yourself creating a 3” x 3” artboard, make sure to keep the file UNTITLED when you record your action. Wait until after you have finished recording to name your file so that it won’t record a specific file name.**

***If you’re following along, please save your actions along the way so that you don’t lose them. At timecode **23:51**, I show you how to save your actions set. (This is different than saving your file. Actions are saved as their own type of file .aia). You can do this any time after you create the first action in your set and then keep resaving over it along the way. This is necessary because your custom actions may disappear if you don’t save them. Better to be safe!***
***Just wanted to add a note about the first action we create at timecode **2:12**- when recording yourself creating a 3” x 3” artboard, make sure to keep the file UNTITLED when you record your action. Wait until after you have finished recording to name your file so that it won’t record a specific file name.***

oh yes i did, and thank you for that. i use actions in flats drawing such as create 5 buttons and then evenly distribute them, or make double stitching... but never used it to create patterns.

Great- I’m so glad you did! Yes- actions can be really useful for both flat sketching and for creating patterns too. Thanks for sharing that, and thanks so much for watching!

out of interest, why not just use illustrator pattern tool with the blue bounding box to the edges of the artboard?

Hi there. I find that creating repeats using the manual method gives me more control over my print development overall than the pattern tool does. It’s fine to use either method- just depends on your preference.
