He's back! And I love the drill press fixture, that looks like it worked out perfect. Excited for this project!!
Glad to be back!
Helooooo!
Where are you getting your music? Sounds good. Also, what is aloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooominum? (Is that joke still funny🤪)
Really love this project. Can’t Waite till it’s complete.
You may already know this but you’re making 30kg of STATIC thrust, i.e. the water in the barrel is not moving. Once you get some speed in the water that thrust will drop off as the angle of attack of the blade decreases. May not be a problem though, once you get foiling, you’re thrust requirement may not me at your max output. I’d be interested to see what the hydrodynamic drag (and thrust) is at each increase in speed. Ramps up quick though, drag is a square of the speed.
LSUtiger607 I didn’t know : ). I just figured that this is the only thing I can easily test. Will see how it goes in the water. I am just hoping for enough thrust.
When will the electronics (motor, esc, controller, pricing) part of the diy electric hydrofoil on instructables be up?
It's been too long. We need to hang out more often!
Great work. I love how you really thought deeply about getting maximum power. That filing must have taken ages too. I was worried it would not be balanced.
Thank you! I was also concerned about balance. I didn’t even measure it. Looks like I either got it right by accident, or that it doesn’t matter very much. The filing was alright. Just 30 minutes. I am always surprised how fast sculpting can be.
Using a picture to sketch and machine the correct angle was really clever!
Thanks for your journey, it's cost alot of $ and times. How about now? did you complete the efoil, seem you need replace the vesc to 75/250 ver to get more phase current and take max thrust. Build higher voltage battery pack also...
Yeah, keep it up man!
Thanks!
Hi Max! I am thinking of building an efoil too! Do you have any knowledge of the regulations of these things or do you just hope that no one catches you? I would be really interested because I also want to foil in Germany and don't want my board confiscated.
Funny wanted to build one myself after seeing the prices of the efoil. Following now good luck
Gary Robinson Thanks for subscribing!
When is the next episode coming? :D
Hi Max,
you did a great job again! I hope we will fly together some time in Germany!
Cheers
Me too!
hy max
love your vids and because of you im really thinking of building one too
as im experienced in building electric skateboards i think i can manage it with your vids
Is the project still going on?
will you make further videos?
KR
Hello from nz. very inspiring video, curious what was the final diameter of the propeller? I was thinking it might be easier to custom make propellers by machining aluminium boss and TIG welding the fins, this is what I intend to try. I have a 1000 kv 56-90 motor with a 1 to 4.25 planetary gearbox running at 24v pulling about 50 amps. I need more thrust so I will try a smaller prop currently i have a 180mm diameter 5hp prop.
Can’t wait for the next video!
Soon : )
ORLY? 😂
Hi there. I like your videos, very detailed. Just wanted to ask why you didn't make your own prop with carbon fiber instead of the metal? Would a lighter prop not be more efficient?
Hey, I don´t think the weight plays a role. The stiffness very likely, but carbon fibre is also not impact resistant. I don´t think commercial boats use carbon fibre for props.
Probably just gives a slight advantage on initial spin up time and motor loading with carbon lightness but really, rotating mass here is almost irrelevant.
Yessssss finally
Hi man! Where did you find that aluminum box? Thanks!!
On ebay!
Interesting, but isn't the "spinning resistance" of the prop going to decrease a lot when you are actually moving through water?
That is possible. I don’t know what will happen.
@@MaxMakerChannel When you're actually moving, some of the rpm "goes into keeping up". Assume you have 6 inch pitch, close enough to 0,15 meters. at 1000 rpm the prop is not producing any thrust at 150 meters per minute, aka 9 km/h. Assume going 22,5 km/h, the first 2500 rpm is not providing thrust, and also takes little power, just overcoming the propellers own friction. So at 22,5 km/h 5000 rpm should take little more power than 2500 rpm in your "test bench". So, the first 2500 rpm almost "disappears" in your calculation, assuming 6 inch pitch and a speed of 22,5km/h.
Also, the high amperage at high power and bigger prop will only be at low speeds, actually the values you got will only be valid for standing still, or almost, which typically probably will last a fraction of a second at "full throttle", and that is even only if you absolutely max it from standing still.
Assuming same pitch, the smaller prop will be a little bit more energy efficient, but it will lose ability to provide thrust at higher speeds. That is, the thrust decreases as speed increases earlier with the smaller prop.
I see. The thrust is only needed to get up on a plane. After that you need only about 30% of the original.
29 kg of thrust is equal to 63lb of thrust. Do you think I can get away with using a trolling motor that produces 80lb of thrust. Thanks
Könnte dir was leihen.
Torsten
Brummer-Lego Danke!
What esc are you running in this beast
want more information on the battery system
any updates?
Same here, I would like to know about the battery system in detail also please.
There is a battery video isn’t there?
Seriously, you can't find and purchase an impeller and impeller housing?
What about prop cavitation
Try a 4 blade propeller 😁
What is the advantage of a 100KV motor opposed to the 120KV? I'm trying to figure out how this number affects the build.
With lower KV comes higher torque. More torque gives the ability of using a larger propeller. You need this larger propeller to be able to keep the same speed to a higher KV motor.
@@wavegreen Thanks!
However, people didn’t find a big difference between the 100 and 120kv motors.
add a propeller guard where the orange 3D printed item is
Yes, that is the plan. I won´t use it without a guard. It wasn´t neccessary for testing. Now I have a brand new 3D printer and I can print the large guard without warping. So its on my to-do list right now.
Does the guard change the dynamics of the efoil lift?
Nice video,
I have the 65161 motor as you. And I have the same prop. But I simply dont want to shorten the prop. What should i go with?
FelixFoils I couldn’t say. First I need to actually get to ride this thing.
@@MaxMakerChannel did you know lift foil has about 70kg max thrust 😉
Wtf! No, not at all. Thats crazy.
@@MaxMakerChannelimportant! Flying rodeo is again selling flipsky props. I @ you on efoil. Builders. Please do me a favour and test this prop! Its optimised for the flipsky and well machined!
Thanks
FelixFoils I saw that but its to expensive. I use the one I have for now.
is there an update? :( want to see more
Not yet : )
Is this project still moving forward?
Yes : ) just slowly.
i woud love to have the same prop ( cnc setup loll)
This turned out as precise as you could probably hand cut.
did you finish the efoil?
Not yet : )
@@MaxMakerChannel I built e skate, this one is really tempting to do. I saw a flipsky combo with everything (without the battery) I may build one soon, thanks for the inspiration!
Finish by easter!!!!!
Too late. I had work stuff to do.
You should get ahold of Alex Prop @ Dr. Props he may help you.
You can reach him on Facebook
your thrust test is not accurate, the proximity to the wall of the barrel causes "ground effect" increasing the thrust you get in comparison to free water
That could be the case. I don’t know, but it served to compare motors and props.
complications bro...🙄
Total bodger, all the gear no idea, could be worse though mate you could have all the ideas but no gear... Can you imagine my frustration...
Haha. Excellent. Max, you are a lunatic.
