Reloading .223 FAST METHOD

  • Discussion on reloading .223 from start to finish, and how to do it more efficiently.
    Step 1: Use a progressive press
    Step 2: Get a nice trimming set up
    Step 3: Do a lot of rounds at once
    It still takes a while because you have to trim, chafer, deburr, and ream out the brass, but doing it all in a row makes it much more efficient. I also don't tumble with media the first time.

    Hey, your video was awesome! I’ll let you know one thing though you don’t have to check them in your rifle. Get yourself one of those 223 gauges at Cabela’s or bass pro shop they cost like 25 bucks you drop the completed round into the gauge and it will check the size and depth for you. Thanks for the tips! I have the same trimming tool it works fantastic and I have my drill set up the same way you do I laughed when I watched your video. That was great shit!!

    Skip trimming and chamfering and you save TONS of time. No trimming needed for AR-15 and chamfering can be replaced by expander mandrel die (like Lyman M die). You can remove sizing/decapping rod from your sizing die and use universal decapping die instead, then sizing, then expander mandrel.
    More consistent neck tension, better case lifespan, much much less case prep work.
    For primer pocket crimp removal, either get Dillon 1050 or Swage it for Dillon 650/750 or Dilllon Super Swage 600.
    You can thank me later 😉

      Awesome I will look into these! I only trim them every couple of cycles, but it really sucks... :/ So if these make my life easier that would be awesome. Thanks!

      @@TheLarkinsLair well main reason for no trimming is that chambers in AR are usually so long that are able to accept even unusually long cases. Both my ARs (M400 and DD) have chamber 1.85” long, measured by Sinclairs chamber gauge - it costs feww bucks on Brownells, get it.
      Even without trimming, you have to chamfer the mouth of the case, if not using Lyman M die. It’s actually even better as even if you chamfer, bullet get sometimes scratched anyway.

    I like your Frankford scale :) Used mine for about two years and it finally gave up the ghost as I use it a lot. Replaced it with a Frankford Precision Powder Scale which so far works perfect.
    The new one has bigger buttons and visual readout but still fits nicely under my Hornady Powder Dispenser.

    You can trim chamfer and debur in one step with the triway trimmer. You will need to resize before trimming to use the triway.

    5.56 needs the primer pocket swaged or chamfered, .223 does not.
    .223 primers are not staked/crimped. (WRONG!!, see my reply below.)

    • @TheLarkinsLair
      @TheLarkinsLair  3 года назад +3

      That is true for a lot of cases, but I usually pick up range brass and some companies do some janky things. Some brand's .223 casings needs swaged/chamfered. I have had to do it even on some 9mm. But generally you are correct.

    • @jonathaneglinton5378
      @jonathaneglinton5378 8 месяцев назад

      That's incorrect. Some 223 has crimped primer pockets.

    Nice video , some observations. Why not a case drop gauge, easier than running through chamber. Your primer pocket ream was exaggerated I hope, don't need to remove much material. Overall case length should be taken after sizing,because brass will get longer after sizing. While sizing different headstamps, they can spring back to different lengths due to different brass manufacturers. Great video ! Have fun a be safe

    I am really enjoying the content. When you tumble the cases in order to get the lube off, are you wet tumbling with steel media, or how do you recommend doing so? Thanks!

    • @TheLarkinsLair
      @TheLarkinsLair  2 года назад

      Great question I just uploaded a video of that but it won't be published for a week and a half. Essentially the key is to use dishwasher detergent or dish soap (with Lemi shine) rather then laundry detergent. Dishwasher detergent is designed to cut through and remove greases much better then laundry detergent. I also tumble with the media the second time where I actually don't the first time because it saves me the step of separating it out.

      Yeah, it is the worst part. I got a new trim die that I am going to give a shot to see if I can size, de-cap, trim, chamfer, and de-bure all at once. We'll see if I can figure it out.

    • @TheLarkinsLair
      @TheLarkinsLair  2 года назад

      "Best" powder is so subjective and it really depends on what your purpose is. Cost? Accuracy? Stability over temperatures? Burn rate? Projectile weight? Target Distance? I can't really give a good answer to this, sorry. My recommendation is to pick one and give it a shot.
