Wait isn't all digital now? Tegra SoC has is own output no? And then there USB-C... unless the USB-C is only there for power input (data lines unconnected) I can see a software hack...
It would be awesome if the switch Lite itself can be connected to another normal switch and act as a controller Let's say you go visit your friend and want to play smash together but he only have one set of joycon If you have a switch lite you could just pair it to docked switch and both people can use full controller instead of sideway joycon
This sorta works in Smash Bros; there is a local wireless version that can connect the Switch Lite to the Switch, but the gameplay is more akin to playing online as opposed to Smash 4's usage of the 3ds
I thought I would want a switch lite but after learning more about it its probably just more beneficial to buy the new version on the switch console during black friday month this year. No reason to miss out on all the features.
I'm thinking this too. 1.) Switch can dock 2.) Switch has a kick stand 3.) Switch has removable controllers for (2 player) / (joycon drift 4.) New improved and better battery life If money is no issue, then it makes total sense to buy the original Switch. The bonus of the lite is the comfort and the Dpad. The Switch Lite is a new DS that can play Switch games with no backwards compatibility. Black Friday will be interesting.
@@Guttlegob even if money is an issue, still but the regular switch. If you just want handheld play, just selling the dock and joy con grip will save you more money than buying a lite. Most of the problems with the original switch stem from the crap joy cons, which drift and don't have an ergonomic shape. This can be solved by selling the standard joy cons and buying better (and cheaper) third party ones. They are a few on the market and some surpass the originals. This will save even more money as well for you.

You are only banned if you go online with a hacked system and there are work arounds. Also Team Xecuter has successfully hacked the Swith model 2 and Lite
For people who already own Nintendo switches? No. For people who a want switch.. eeehh save up a bit more, having the ability to connect to a TV is a great feature that I use and I like using the ability to go from handheld to TV mode. also stick drift, apparently the analog sticks are similar so you'd have to take it apart and put new analog sticks in, unlike the full sized switch where you can get new Joycons and don't have to worry about taking an entire console apart to replace the analog sticks.
For people who already own Nintendo Switch? In my opinion: yes, especially, if they feel the regular Switch is just way too big and expensive for carrying around everyday. BUT I do agree that, if one is thinking about getting their first Switch, I'd definitely get the regular one for the reasons you already mentioned above. The TV-handheld instant switching thing really is THE feature in case of Switch.
still go for the original switch as without docking you can easily improve your handheld mode experience with custom joycons, like the Daemon X Machina Joycons, The hori D-pad joycon, the Ipega PG 9083 or the IPEGA PG 9163, not to mention using joycons you can buy seperately and having a larger screen for table top multiplayer with an inbuilt kickstand incase you don't want to pay for an external kickstand. The switch lite is a more single player focused system, while having no intention to dock the system is understandable the original Switch can still be a better choice due to its larger screen, higher level of customisability and easily replaceable joycons, and the Dock makes for a good charging station for those with small amounts of table space. lastly the Stick drift, we've already established that the Switch Lite analog stick design is scarily similar to the ones used in the joycons and as a result we can expect drifting issues to occur a lot, which if you want to fix yourself be prepared to take an entire handheld apart to do so in an effective manner, or make sure to get a case when putting it in a bag.
The og Switch has drifting issues? Before I sold my og Switch to buy the Switch Lite (because I mostly play my PS4 or PC & usually only played my Switch in handheld mode) my og Switch never had drift issues.
what a massive downgrade for a handheld mode only experience. I hope someone makes a Switch Lite charging station that's like a mini Switch Dock, cause the switch dock is a great charging station for the switch.

I’m very interested in getting one, I loved the portability of a 3DS and being able to have it with me on the go so easily. Not so sure how this thing fits in a pocket though 😂
I would’ve preferred if the switch light had 3ds like circle pads instead of the same sticks. They would be more portable and would have much less chance of drifting. Maybe one day there could be a way to mod them in.
Jeep Jupiter I bet they could make a special circle pad with a really awesome button on it that has a great click that still works well as a circle pad on the 3ds
switch lite sticks are better than the og switch ones, it has more resistant pieces that may prevent drifting, which is caused by the excessive usage. the problems that all portals reported are probably because of exceptional falulty consoles that came already wth the defect.
For me lack of external video output kills this model, as it's purely marketing, not hardware limitation - if it had HDMI output it would greatly diminish sales of the more expensive model. It's 2019, cheap smartphones or Android dongles can output video to external monitor;)
The original switch can do everything the lite does and much more including customising the joycon (hori pad). It's also more portable with the joycon off and can fit in a xxxl phone belt clip holster. 100$CA off is not worth it. Especially when the joycon cost 90$CA and the dock 120$CA.
Exactly my thoughts. Regardless of what "handheld" I choose to use, I'd have it in a case regardless so the fact it's more "portable" than the original isn't a selling feature to me at all. Too many sacrifices were made and the cost is still too high. Nintendo dropped the ball on this one imo.
being a teenager with a part time job, the switch is simply too much. where I live after taxes the switch would be $160 more than the lite really only for tv mode which I never used on my wii u. theres a big market for it you're just not it
Priced like a handheld, plays Switch games just as well as the actual Switch. It isn't really for people who already own a Switch. Great if you don't though.
The lack of tv support is really annoying though. I wish they had a switch lite port that they sold separately. Or maybe have the Switch Lite just blow up it's screen to the TV.
@@MrMarinus18 well yes but if the lite had the ability to plug to the tv, whats the point of the og switch. Tho it will be cool if the the switch lite would have detachable joy cons
@@cbd6978 I still hope they will make the switch capable of connecting to a tv without the dock. That it just takes the image on the build-in screen and blows it up on the tv. The og Switch would still have the dock and it's overall larger size as advantages.
I like the design of the Switch Lite better than the original, but it does cost about as much as my 8,000 BTU window air conditioner, and that took me a few months to save up for. At the moment, I can't justify saving up for a Nintendo Switch Lite as I am on a tight budget. I mean, I really only bought 3 games for my old Nintendo 3DS, and those were all Legend of Zelda titles. It tooks me over a year to get the last one, and Switch games cost 1/3rd more than 3DS games. The Switch really is a luxury console.
Jesus, this is the first video I've watched of yours for a while... wish I had more time to binge watch your videos on what I've missed 😩 please keep up the good work though dude, always love your content!!!
yeah, that's pretty much what they're going for since the original is already portable. with the release of pokemon sword/shield, a $200 switch is much more attractive for parents buying them this coming holiday season. plus, this pulls in anyone who still doesn't have one and is just looking for cheap and portable. EDIT: forgot to say that this is pretty much where i fit, since i might pick up because of the new zelda and i don't have a portable system. as for using at home, not a chance, pc takes care of home gaming.
I would feel incredibly uncomfortable lugging around the OG switch. It's gigantic, and while I think it's fine for other people to carry around if they're comfortable, I personally wouldn't be. If I want a portable console, I want it to be able to slip into a jacket pocket, and not be huge, so for me, it's perfect in that way. (Especially considering it's more for people who don't have a switch already).
Yeah, in some countries a used Switch is just too expensive, normally more expensive than a new one or the Lite. Like here in Chile, normally a used Switch is about 450$ and a new one is about 400$, and the Lite is 300$.
@@alexojideagu the pricing for Nintendo in a lot of South America is fucked up in one way or another.. like Brazil's ridiculous import tax that leads most ppl to buy consoles from a family member vacationing in USA instead.
Considering the pricing of switch games and the lack of hdmi (and therefore the inability to play co op) i see no argument to safe like 80 bucks on the "lite" version.
If you want to go further.. the dock for a regular switch is 80 to 90.... Which comes with the regular switch so your sorta.. Losing alot of features for the price of a HDMI dock...
Great video! You just nailed every single doubt I had about the Lite :) Also, what do you think about a "modular dock" that adds that video display processor externally, it's barely possible?
Ay MVG did you forget the psp 2k, 3k, and go had video out? Hell the psp go had A DOCK LIKE A SWITCH and you could pair a dualshock 3 to it. Nintendo didn't do the hybrid thing first.
I've heard several reports now of drifting on the switch lite. Even on Reddit as well. People have confirmed the joy stick design is the same on there. You should bear in mind that drifting may take time to develop, so we should wait to see if there will be further drifting switch lites in the future. We can't really tell now as the people getting drift this early may just be the unluckiest customers. But the fact that it CAN happen this early is worrying. Nintendo need to get their act together!
MVG again with quality content :) especially the tear down and revelation that the Lite is using the same analogue sticks as previous joycon. I've yet to own a pair of joycon that didn't end up with the drift issue, making this a hard pass for me.
The regular Switch would just be money wasted for me. But the Switch Lite is exactly what I want and nothing more. When they drop the price to $125 in a couple years, I will get one. For now, I am just getting into 15 years worth of DS and 3DS games.
I find the Lite to be rather disappointing, TBH. But when you opened it, I couldn't help but feel just slightly giddy. Once Android can be hacked onto it, the Lite will be pretty much the perfect mobile "Media Preservation Machine"*. *(Both legit and as code for "emulation box")
I'll swap out my current "travel" switch for one of these once some exploits have been released. That's my only issue with my current switch, my Vita is a much nicer form factor for travelling with. Meanwhile, my home switch remains unhacked, and will continue to be used at home for online play with the legit copies of the games I take on my "travel" switch. I did consider upgrading that one to one of the newer revisions, but, as it remains perma-docked, the increased battery life is of zero concern really.
Something with Microsoft perhaps on Windows, at least I hope so, I don't trust Nintendo with anything related to PC (Since they done nothing on it ... like ever (maybe the Mario math game was on DOS))
Great Video !, Quick tip : Clean thermal paste with IPA, using a cloth may get thermal paste on components ( not good if the paste is conductive) . Also the NVIDIA TEGRA x1 SOC has a 256-core Maxwell-derived GPU that supports 4k, much like the K1 chip in the NVIDIA Shield. I imagine there will be mods to get video out as the device hardware should be able to cope with it.
Without the chip that does the HDMI/Displayport processing, a breakout board with the required chip and circuits (like the RGB mod pcbs for SNES, for example) would be required. That's more soldering and case modding than I would be comfortable with on a handheld. It would probably be easier and more reliable to consolize a Switch Lite than adding a wire soldered, taped down little pcb to the inside of the Switch and still trying to use it as a hybrid portable
It'd be cool if that was the fabled Switch-pro. That way there's more space for more internal storage, slightly better video output, and a slightly more powerful cpu.
I may be wrong but only left joycon had a separate board connected via a ribbon cable to the mobo; the right joycon board is part of the mobo itself, so if it breaks you have to change the entire motherboard
if you buy a lite and end up wanna try docking it, you can setup a camera that has hdmi over the switch screen and plug that into the tv it may look a little bad but if you get the right spot itll look fine and you just connect two controllers too it. I saw a video of it but i couldnt find it. Dont go buy a camera to go out of your way to do it though its just if you already have a lite and already have a camera like that. If you wanna get a dockable switch for $200 just buy a used one for like $230 or by parts separately
I owned a switch lite for about 2 months. Played breath of the wild and mario oddysey, then i just fell out of love with it. I bring a 3ds xl/ 2ds with me now for portable gaming, and its honestly much better if you want to play some of your favorite tiles on the go. I know it seems like a silly comparison to say with lite vs. 3ds, but my uses were for a portable gaming console. The swith and switch lite are just not small enough, or comfortable enough to fill that need for me. I just ordered a refurbished switch on ebay for $250, and i reccomend that route if you dont want to fork out the full amount for a switch. You will want to play your lite on the tv at some point, and some of my favorite games like mario kart and smash bros just aren't as fun without being able to round up your friends and play on a TV.
I wish they would pick up the brains of the console and make an home only switch. No screen, no speakers, no joy cons, no batterie. Just the brains and the cartridge slot. 100 euros. And you had to be able to sync ps4 or xbox controllers. Im sure it would sell well. Since you like to take apart consoles, could you do such a thing?. Do you think it could work? :)
so go the Vita+PSTV route? after all, the PS4/XB1 are not at that price yet, it would definitely sell as a cheap console for a kid. Until a more solid cloud save/sync system is in place however, that won't sell
@@pipyakas The console wouldn't be for kids, it would be for people like me that prefer to play on a big tv screen and. don't want to pay 290 for a switch to dock it and never use it as an handheld. No digital games. I like cartridges. The past was a cool idea. Cheaper way to play vita games.
If they did that we would lose portability since we either have games added that aren't able to run on portable versions or because they would have to make more options depending on you're switch
in my opinion I have the switch lite since I traded in my og switch since it was too big and uncomfortable for my hands not to mention it feels very non durable but when I got this, not only is there barely any weight it DOES fit in you're pocket and feels way more sturdy instead of those joycons that literally aren't attached that well at all Trust me you cant judge this system on its looks since everything feels and looks different in person Btw MY Opinion

Why can't anyone that can do anything, including art importantly, use their skills for free in return for everyone else doing everything else for them?

This channel is very cool and elucidative. The best one for technology education monday mornings! Congrats!
it is nice that the inputs are on the separate PCB - it makes easier to replace them if they broke - good for nintendo
Meanwhile in April 2020 people think it's worth $300+ and the regular at $400+. These are some dark times
Look up the prices of the animal crossing switch.
@@Notarobot562 Oh believe me I have and it's ridiculous.
“Everything gets exploited eventually.” So true in the world in general.
You're the first source that I've heard mention the fact that the Switch Lite is missing the video output chipset. I was sure that they had simply disabled video output in the firmware, but it would appear that my assumptions were wrong. Thanks for the info!
Wait isn't all digital now? Tegra SoC has is own output no? And then there USB-C... unless the USB-C is only there for power input (data lines unconnected) I can see a software hack...
It would be awesome if the switch Lite itself can be connected to another normal switch and act as a controller
Let's say you go visit your friend and want to play smash together but he only have one set of joycon
If you have a switch lite you could just pair it to docked switch and both people can use full controller instead of sideway joycon
Thank you! I have been thinking the exact same thing. How come they did not speak about something like this. I really hope Nintendo considers it.
That would be an excellent features, I don't think it would be that hard to update in either.
@John Stroud the switch lite does have Bluetooth connection, and you don't actually need to display the screen, just the controller part is working
This sorta works in Smash Bros; there is a local wireless version that can connect the Switch Lite to the Switch, but the gameplay is more akin to playing online as opposed to Smash 4's usage of the 3ds
I thought that was possible with a normal switch...
I thought I would want a switch lite but after learning more about it its probably just more beneficial to buy the new version on the switch console during black friday month this year. No reason to miss out on all the features.
I'm thinking this too.
1.) Switch can dock
2.) Switch has a kick stand
3.) Switch has removable controllers for (2 player) / (joycon drift
4.) New improved and better battery life
If money is no issue, then it makes total sense to buy the original Switch.
Meanwhile due to Corona stores here are selling it for 350

Why did censor your serial number at the beginning but then show it during the teardown?
What if you own a PS4 or XbOne and have not much intention of docking it?
still go for the original switch as without docking you can easily improve your handheld mode experience with custom joycons, like the Daemon X Machina Joycons, The hori D-pad joycon, the Ipega PG 9083 or the IPEGA PG 9163, not to mention using joycons you can buy seperately and having a larger screen for table top multiplayer with an inbuilt kickstand incase you don't want to pay for an external kickstand.
The switch lite is a more single player focused system, while having no intention to dock the system is understandable the original Switch can still be a better choice due to its larger screen, higher level of customisability and easily replaceable joycons, and the Dock makes for a good charging station for those with small amounts of table space.
lastly the Stick drift, we've already established that the Switch Lite
analog stick design is scarily similar to the ones used in the joycons and as a result we can expect drifting issues to occur a lot, which if you want to fix yourself be prepared to take an entire handheld apart to do so in an effective manner, or make sure to get a case when putting it in a bag.

@Intra Ignis "Come on doctors cure cancer... While your lazy ass sits around not getting a 7 year degreee"... What's your point? You're honestly being a garbage human... Its what modders would do.... "mod"..
Jeep Jupiter idk, Nintendo should be able to find a way to make them click in. If not then there could be R3 And L3 buttons next to the circle pads
Play Steeldiver Subwars for 3ds is awesome
Jeep Jupiter I bet they could make a special circle pad with a really awesome button on it that has a great click that still works well as a circle pad on the 3ds
Todd Altman i reckon Nintendo could find a way to just make them click in like an analogue stick
switch lite sticks are better than the og switch ones, it has more resistant pieces that may prevent drifting, which is caused by the excessive usage. the problems that all portals reported are probably because of exceptional falulty consoles that came already wth the defect.
3:05 I've never seen someone try so hard not to say "take it with you when taking a shit"
Especially when the joycon cost 90$CA and the dock 120$CA.
dycu It's only $79 more than the Lite tho.
In my country the lite costs 229 euro (thats about 250 dollar i looked it up)
you seem offended lol
being a teenager with a part time job, the switch is simply too much. where I live after taxes the switch would be $160 more than the lite really only for tv mode which I never used on my wii u. theres a big market for it you're just not it
Priced like a handheld, plays Switch games just as well as the actual Switch.
Love your videos, MVG!.. So pro and chill together. Thank you.
But I can already take my switch anywhere. This only serves as an economy model switch.
yeah, that's pretty much what they're going for since the original is already portable. with the release of pokemon sword/shield, a $200 switch is much more attractive for parents buying them this coming holiday season. plus, this pulls in anyone who still doesn't have one and is just looking for cheap and portable.
EDIT: forgot to say that this is pretty much where i fit, since i might pick up because of the new zelda and i don't have a portable system. as for using at home, not a chance, pc takes care of home gaming.
The previous switch is a little too big to carry around for me, the lite is much better for that.
Also this will really boost sales in Japan as they really love handhelds.
@Lassi Kinnunen It would cost more.
I bought my 2nd hand Switch for 199€ just a couple months ago, so I recommend checking that since it's just better
Especially if it's hackable.
Yeah, in some countries a used Switch is just too expensive, normally more expensive than a new one or the Lite. Like here in Chile, normally a used Switch is about 450$ and a new one is about 400$, and the Lite is 300$.

There is already a switch lite reported with the drift issue
I've heard several reports now of drifting on the switch lite. Even on Reddit as well. People have confirmed the joy stick design is the same on there.
You should bear in mind that drifting may take time to develop, so we should wait to see if there will be further drifting switch lites in the future. We can't really tell now as the people getting drift this early may just be the unluckiest customers. But the fact that it CAN happen this early is worrying. Nintendo need to get their act together!

Vita has a plugin to make video out via mini USB, and then it's recognized as a webcam. At the very least, this will be possible on the Lite.
@@twicethemegapower3995 do you mean RGB for NES? SNES natively had RGB right? Or is this about fixing pre-1chip fuzzy video?
