    To make even faster: When you finish cutting out the interfacing petals (I do 10 layers at a time), leave them stacked and use the rotary cutter to make the little slit in the middle of the whole pile at once. It saves you doing them one at a time with scissors.

    Another way to make it easier is don't cut your 10 inch background square. Just fold it in half both directions. You can use your fold lines to place the four orange peels on the 10 inch square. Then you only have ten inch blocks to sew together instead of four-5 inch blocks.

    Where would we all e w/o MSQC & such talented quilters!? The only tip I have when making an orange peel quilt is, and I’m sure someone else has already mentioned this but, I sew my orange peels onto a 10” square, instead of 5” squares, it takes out the steps of having to sew the, on 5” squares and then having to sew those together. Happy sewing❤

    If you keep your pointer tool only on the fabric fold and not the interfacing fold, the interfacing will never tear.
    Awesome hints in this group of comments. Thanks to everyone, woohoo. I've been too 🐔 to sew this quilt because I too thought it was all curves to sew. The new simplicity you two have done it in has opened up a world of peels now.
    This should also be in the triple play so we can see ideas you there ladies come up with. Even a mini orange peel project.

    I love 💕 the look of an Orange Peel quilt. After I turn out my peel shape, I trim away all but about 5/8” of the interfacing before pressing the shape to the square (sometimes called the “windowing’ technique for appliqué, usually done to reduce bulk). I find this lessens the overall stiffness of my quilt top. It looks fabulous in these latest Kaffe Fassett fabrics.

  • @susanmei9980
    @susanmei9980 Год назад +18

    Beautiful quilt.
    Honestly, I think if you didn’t cut the 10” square into four pieces, and you laid all the orange peels going in the same slant, I think you could get six out of one 10” square! I haven’t tried it, but I think it might work. Then you could make a bigger quilt.
    Also, I was thinking that if you took a little circle and put it right in the center of those four petals it would make a flower! 🌼

    • @HRHDMKYT

    • @susanmei9980
      @susanmei9980 Год назад +5

      @@HRHDMKYT Thanks for checking that out! I wasn’t able to dig out my template until now, and as you found, it’s too chunky to get six. But by drawing on the cardboard that came on a ten sq pack, I figured out a way to get five!.
      So in the top row, point the top of both footballs to the center. Then in the bottom row, Point the tops of both footballs out to the center sides of the square; having the bottoms of the footballs pointing to the center of the bottom. (They sort of form a circle.)
      Then, there’s just enough room to squeak a fifth petal pointing straight up and down (or side to side)! 😁
