The Cat is the Hat: I made a Purr-et out of Wegie Wool [CC]

  • I've seen real actual famous RUclipsrs like @Simply Nailogical, @Corinne Leigh and @Moriah Elizabeth felting hats and fingerpuppets out of their cat's hair. I loved it, but felt (hehe) the need to level it up a bit. So I carded, spun, plied and knit a beret out of my cat's hair.

    My hope is that that there is a tiny bit of Wegie yarn left, so you can knit a little mouse toy! Then Wegie can play with Wegie!!! 🐈 🐁

    • @sonipitts
      @sonipitts 4 года назад +4

      DO NOT DO THIS. It is best NEVER to give cats toys made from yarn or yarn to play with (including wound balls of yarn). If they swallow any length at all, it can wind through and actually twist or knot up their intestines in potentially life-threatening ways (which is also the reason you should NEVER pull or "help along" any string you might see coming out the other end). Especially when spun with or completely made of stronger, harder to break yarns like silk, nylon, poly or acrylic.
      Additionally, yarn tends to get caught on their backward-facing tongue rasps or around a tooth and they can have difficulty freeing it so as to spit out the yarn, presenting a choking/swallowing hazard. (Worst case: it's a longish piece that one end gets tangled on the back of the tongue or around a tooth and the other end swallowed then entangled lower down enough to create a knot, presenting a situation where the GI system then "climbs up" the anchored yarn due to peristalsis.) If you suspect a cat has swallowed yarn of more than just an inch or two, you should always call your vet. Short lengths (a few inches) are generally (but not always) passed with no harm - maybe add a bit more oil to their diet to help. But unless you know exactly how long it was it's better safe than sorry

      @@sonipitts Yup. My cat loves to choke down any long thing strand of whatever she can get a hold of. Fortunately it’s never been a long something and she has not needed intervention.
      She’ll tip un-lidded garbage cans when she’s alone at night to eat thin strips of paper, fabric or off-cut threads. Including severing the threads from their spools on my sewing machine and seger.
      It’s definitely changed my habit of “just sweep when you’re done”. I now have a seger cover. And plastic ribbon is immediately disposed of safely.
      Cat grass helps, as it can be choked down in a similarly pleasing way, while being fully digestible.
      I also feed her a teaspoon of pumpkin purée (pure pumpkin, not pie mix). As a digestive aid. Fibre, moisture. If she gets a small piece of not-food, at least her general digestion is moving well. Apparently no need to mix it into wet food, she loses her mind when I open a can, and will not give up until she gets some.
      And yes, she is other wise healthy, played with, and cuddled regularly on her terms. I think of it like supporting a recovering addict by keeping all traces of their choice substance out of reach - especially at night when it’s lonely and boring.

      My cat used to snitch my steamed zucchini (courgette) off my plate (as if it was meat). I told my cat's doctor about it. It took several minutes for his doctor to understand & believe me. She kept trying to convince me to buy canned pumpkin instead.
      I think fresh food is *always* better than canned.When she finally accepted what I was saying, she agreed: cook extra for him. Let him eat as much as he wants. The moisture & soft roughage really help.
      (But, that was one doctor's opinion & othe doctors, experts & cat guardians may disagree.

    Rewatching this, to show my 13yo daughter. As she says- why would anyone think it’s gross? It’s no different to wearing angora rabbit fur. It’s brushed out too. Or any different to sheep’s wool. As long as the animals aren’t hurt by getting their fur, it’s fine.
    And she said that your videos are really relaxing to watch- ASMR for the ears and the eyes!

    All my friends with long haired animals look at me funny when I ask them to save their pets' fur so that I can spin it. My three are, unfortunately for projects like these, short haired, so no domestic animal fibre spinning for me. It turned out beautifully. If you can handle how needy they are, French angora rabbits are lovely house pets :) they like head scratches and to be brushed, and they sometimes tap dance to ask for treats, which is the cutest thing in the world :)
      They do however leave little poo’s in whatever rooms they are allowed to occupy :/

    This was so much fun to watch! I had no idea there were little machines for all of these steps 😅 I've learnt a little bit about spinning, and most items I was shown were more handheld (like two brushes for separating the hair that you have to hold in your hand - whereas yours only needs to be spinned! And also the yarn ball maker 😂 my dad and I spent hours making yarn balls for my mom when I was little, just by hand) so thanks for showing us 💕

    This is the best thing I've ever seen and everything I have ever wanted. Costube can all go home, you've won! (Sorry Cesario!) Is the yarn nice and soft or more like traditional wool? Would be so interested to try working with something so unusual!

    • @JuulThijssen

      It is very soft, more like alpaca than sheep.

    You spin as well. Perfect. If people think it’s weird to spin cat fur they don’t have to watch your videos. I don’t think it’s any weirder than sheep, alpaca, rabbit, and I have all of those in my fibre stash.

    I just showed this to my husband because I've been collecting hair from my cat to maybe felt with. She doesn't have as much hair as your Wedgie, but she definitely sheds like crazy!

    LOL! what a great vid and idea! Absolutely love the Beret sorry Purret :-) I often joke with my sister that she should make something from her dog's coat. He is a glamour coat German Shepherd. I will definitely be sharing your stunning hat with her ...have a great week 👍

    That was amazing. You have all the right tools to take something I usually thrown in the bin and make a wonderful hat out of it. I'm a bit jealous -- I'm looking forward to seeing the matching mittens!

    My cat absolutely loves being brushed, but she’s short haired, and it would take many more spring moults than Wegie to get enough for even a small hat.

    Love this! I’m a knitter and spinner as. Well, though my cats are shorter haired so I’d have to collect hair for a long time. Brilliant idea to combine the hair with the silk to blend it and get more yarn. Btw - in English -American we call it plying, not twining, minor point. 🧶😻

    • @JuulThijssen
      @JuulThijssen  4 года назад +4

      Ohh thanks for the correction! I think the longer silk fibre also made it easier to spin with, and it gave a nice shine to the yarn. Might have been a bit dull without it.
