Why do you put "good" in scare quotes? Do you mean "official"? This is an attempt at a singable English re-creation. A lot of it is fairly close, but a fair bit of it is way off--in substance if not in spirit. I've never cared for Alive and Well. I think you're better off with Brel and literal, if awkward, translations--or just learn French.
Jacques Brel makes me want to learn French. The way he told stories in his music was absolutely amazing and on another level. I wish there were more people like him who could pull off what he did in such a beautiful, artistic, and classy way. But I guess the reason why there aren't is because he was so one of a kind!

Dont't forget Adamo. But BREL reached out to the stars during his life, and unfortunately became a star in the sky much too young. When he died in 1978 I was nine years old and knew three of his songs already by heart (Dutch language versions, for example 'De Burgerij', it was the time I believed socialism would prevail in the class strugle as well). Brel is - with Leonard Cohen and Bram Vermeulen - still one of my all time favorits.

I have loved Brel's music since I first saw his Jaques Brel is Alive and Living in Paris performed in Greenwich when I was 14 or 15 with the late Mort Shuman and Elly Stone. Never got to hear him in person performing his own songs though...

Jacques Brel, autor, vivía cada canción al cantarla entregándose por entero al texto y al público. Interpretaba con tal pasión que se fundía en emociones contrapuestas e incitaba a amar cuanto decía. Invitaba a amarle. Sí, lo confieso, desde entonces yo le amé. Ame sus canciones y amé a quien las cantaba, cada vez arropado en un personaje distinto. Le amé hasta el día que se fue y, entonces sentí no haber estado a la altura de aquel sentimiento. Muerto de amor absoluto, no supimos darle un ápice de lo que él nos ofreció. Siento especial estima por La Fanette porque resume ese ardor que le abrasó. Y nos quema a cuantos le “quisimos”.

Bien sûr en traversant la vie chacun a ses idoles, chacun a un bestiaire de ceux qui dans tous les arts, nous ont émue, fait rire, rêver ou pleurer … moi je fais le bilan de mon époque et c’est là que je me rends compte qu’en tous les arts …. Il y a des irremplaçables, des grands, de ceux qui ont été et qui ne sont plus, qui nous manque et lui il nous manquera toujours.
