I literally laughed out loud as I watched this episode. The verse is essentially an over the top failed pick up attempt. In our modern world the lady would block Donne on her social media sites, yet committing to flea murder is more delightfully dramatic 😂.
Donne can come across as emotionally arrogant in his writings, but this verse seems to show him having fun at his own expense, which is enjoyable. Of course I could be wrong, perhaps he was being 100% serious as he found his never to be lover guilty of flea homicide.

I love this comment omg!! Flea homicide, that needs to be on the blurb of the Penguin classics edition. Donne does sometimes come across as slightly (very) self obsessed, but I think the good natured humour still manages to shine through. There are some very amusing poems on the curriculum, but The Flea is definitely one of my favourites. Hoping to film a video on my other sneaky favourite soon too x
