  • John Donne's The Flea is one of his best known poems, largely because it finds its way into undergraduate syllabi. The reason it does is because of its prurient erotic imagery. But there is far more to it than that.
The flea is a prime example of a metaphysical conceit, used by the foremost of the Metaphysical poets. He draws upon a knowledge of pagan literature and sensibilities, often vulgar, while at the same time using stock Biblical metaphors replete with rich theological implications.
This will form a favourite pattern of meditation for Donne, one that he will repeatedly return to, largely because it is woven into the very fabric of the Elizabethan world picture that he inherits.
