    the image/video quality is top notch. the size is great. the af is excellent, battery life is great, color is fine, everything else...can be better, especially the display...

      I thought the color was great with a slight WB tweak. But otherwise, yes, it's a shame the camera kind of get's in its own way.

    The A7C is my fave camera so far and I've owned many Sony and Nikon FF bodies. Anything that it lacks, I don't need. 😃It's definitely a highly capable camera and not just for the vlogger market. Just to have a sensor in that size body with its AF, ISO performance, dynamic range and IBIS is a huge feat.

      It’s certainly not just for the blogger market. And I agree it’s highly capable!

    I just bought an A7C yesterday.
    I do street photography and value small and lightweight bodies. I’m trying this body for two reason. I don’t own a full frame camera and want to see if there is a difference between APSC and FF images. I’m thinking not much. I want to experience Sony’s autofocus.
    I am a photographer so I much prefer a tilt screen. Having the screen sticking out from the body attracts unwanted attention. I’m not impressed with the EVF. On the other hand, I use the EVF so I’m glad there is one. I like IBIS and glad the A7C has this feature. I’m looking forward to see how effective it is. I have an Olympus E1Mii and that IBIS is very effective. I’m curious to see how the B&W jpegs are. I love contrasty B&W that crushes the blacks. I was happy to see a larger battery. I’m not a professional so I don’t need dual card slots. I bet small camera’s don’t have this feature.
    I need to buy a lens. Looking for a small 35 or 50mm lens. I don’t need a bright lens. I’m setting the camera up so I don’t have to menu dive. I hope I like this camera.

    I appreciate you taking the time to review the camera, and to clearly state at the begining that you are a user of other brands as of making the video.
    I'm also a street photographer, and I've used an alpha6000 for 7 years, and an alpha 7R III for 2.5 years now and I pretty much know all the ins and outs of the software, and I know that most of the negatives on your review, have a solution by customizing the buttons, screen or touch functionality.
    Mentioning to remove the back dial for the joystick means getting rid of a much more useful dial (which can be used to easily change ISO, Aperture or Shutter Speed), in comparison to a Joystick which just helps you navigate in 4 directions (menus and focusing point).
    As a street photographer, I have face recognition on, and I almost never have to use a point I would need to move to focus, and if that would be the case, I change the focus area to "center" and use the back button focus technique with the AEL/AF button on the back so I focus and recompose.
    Your comparison with Leica and other flat cameras that don't have a "grip" is a bit out of the place. The x100V is wellknown for having really bad battery life in comparison to Sony's with the z100 larger battery. If you look the camera upside down, you are going to see that the grip is actually 95% the battery size. I would much rather have decent battery life, than a flat camera, specially if it's a hybrid for video (which I never use).
    The comparison between Sony (or any mirrorless lens) with Leica (or M mount) lenses, also out of the place, those don't Auto Focus, and that's why the Sony lenses are larger in comparison (at least to an extend). That's comparing apples to oranges.
    So at the end I guess the real objective observation in regards to hardware I end up taking from the video is that the EVF is small (probably lower quality too compared to the a7III), and it would have been ideal to have a front dial, but still, I guess as you said, tradeoffs had to be made in order to make the camera as small as it is.

    • @TheLiamGordon
      @TheLiamGordon  2 года назад

      Thanks for a carefully thought out response. I'm glad the Sony system is working for you.
      My review is not supposed to be a mainstream overview of the camera against comparable cameras, it's just my opinion and what I like and dislike. I explore various tools for the same job and share my process of becoming a better street photographer, so I don't think any of my comparisons are out of place.
      I'm aware that what I like in cameras is often not what most people like. Sadly no amount of customization of buttons will make the A7C preferable to me over an X100V or Leica M. These are the cameras I have found work best for me through trial and error. But I also would not necessarily recommend them to others.
      The A7C will be certainly perfect for many more people than a Leica M.

    I've just been researching this camera. Seems to make a lot of sense to me. Compared to the R6 for instance it is 500g v 680g and over 800€ less expensive and the record limit I can see as being a big deal for many. I would like to see it compared to the Panasonic S5 and the Fuji XT4. I guess we all buy cameras for different needs. I have an XT3 which has way to many features and complications and drawbacks - drives me nuts. The other day I recorded nearly all my footage in slow motion by accident. I want simplicity without compromise. I don't want 10 + frames per second. I want 1. I don't want 4 card slots, I want 1. I don't want bracketing, or a ton of different autofocus features. I want 1 that works. I want my camera like my washing machine, simple but high quality (in black though). Ideally, a full frame, internally adjustable, zoom 12mm to 300mm, 1.4- throughout the range would be nice with good IBIS, no record limit, internal ND, and 240 fps in 4k in an elegant Fuji X100 V body would be nice. Aplogies for the long comment,.

    • @TheLiamGordon
      @TheLiamGordon  2 года назад +2

      I think cameras are so complex because we all want them to do slightly different things. So manufacturers are trying to cover as many users as possible. But in doing so, they end up building in drawbacks for everyone too. They actually can’t win, I guess.

    I like the approach of hitting the negatives and then just being like "other than that, good to go!" Like every reviewer reads us the manual. It really is way easier to hear some downsides and then consider if they break the deal.
    I've got one and I definitely love it. In fact, I use exactly that set up 95% of the time- A7c + Sony 35/2.8 ZA. For every day walkabout, I don't think that combo can be beat in that price range. Not with everything the A7c offers.
    Worth noting, it's so small that even after vintage glass is adapted the overall kit is still quite small. It's perfect with stuff like the omnipresent Helios 44-2 or the sneaker Jupiter 137a. It's also a perfect match for Voigtlanders. Rent a 40/1.2 and pick up the camera. It'll melt your heart quick as that pupper did 👌

    • @SourPlanet
      @SourPlanet Год назад

      @@Sayject I know people who use the A7c for commercial work but I won't pretend they're a majority. Most are on the A7iv and A1. Occasionally the a7riv or a7rv. The A7c packs pro level features into a prosumer body. That's it's power. Actual pros typically want pro level features with a pro body to match. I do see it often used as a B-roll body (great video tools) or a lens specific secondary body on location.
      But yeah, I'm still on the A7c and I use it every day. I'm a street and cityscape photographer, though. So a lot of the super pro level features I don't really need. It keeps up with Manhattan and all it's wild bustle so I'm happy. Still taking out that 35/2.8 ZA constantly too! It's just such a discreet combo. Though I've added a few new lenses to the stable.
      That canon I'm not super familiar with so I can't say how they compare. I shot Nikon prior to Sony and I've never known canons lineup well.

      @@SourPlanet hey man, I really appreciate you writing a detailed comment for me lol
      You made some great points and I’m leaning towards the A7C.
      I myself am in New York City. Well, I plan to stay there more often next year.
      The only two things that bother me with the A7C is not fully being able to use the touchscreen and the grip, does the touchscreen bother you, and is the grip big enough for your hands?
      I am planning to visit New York in December and hopefully get to go hold and check out both of the cameras at B&H
      Also, having the camera mainly for the discreet look I’m all for that,
      Do you feel safe walking around NY with your camera btw?
      I don’t know why I’m so bothered by having an expensive camera out on lol
      Anyway, sorry for such a long comment. Hope you can respond back. :)

    • @SourPlanet

      @@Sayject No problem. Always happy to help and I love talking camera stuff.
      Touchscreen never bothered me. I played with tap to focus/track and it's cool.. but it's not how I like to shoot at all. I either snipe from the chest/waist by flipping the screen out and up or I'm shooting scenery with the viewfinder. The viewfinder, btw, is not great. I have glasses and it's my number one complaint. The grip is fine for me, as my hands aren't that big. I usually wrap the strap around my wrist and kinda "coil" it up as a clutch. The camera just hangs off my fingertips very comfortably and secure. I also find that throwing a small lens on there makes for an amazing shooting experience. With the 35/2.8 Sony Zeiss.. it's almost pocket sized. The results are anything but, though. Great for street photography. I'd be more than happy to share some of my photos with you if you're interested in seeing the quality and such for NYC shooting.
      As for shooting in NYC... It's very safe in most places most of the time for photography. Especially with a discreet camera like the A7c. I've literally never had any issue. There is occasionally a block in an "out of the way" area where I put it away while I get a feel for the vibe. This is for any city, though, of course. Worth noting, I'm a Manhattan guy. I spend 99% of my time in Manhattan and Manhattan during the day and evening is exceedingly safe. I carry my camera cross body at nearly all times with no concern.
      Check out Adorama while you're here too! They're in a much better area of town for photography (proper midtown) and they typically have better deals. But, most of all, it's way way less busy. BH is just overflowing with people all the time ha.

Not sure how good the cameras in this price range are but I don’t want to use my iPhone anymore 😂.

      Since the A7C is the only Sony camera I've used I might not be the best judge but I'd probably start with something in the A6000 - A6400 series. If you can find a body that is fairly cheap (check MPB for something used) and maybe a 35mm lens with a nice big aperture, that'll be a solid start for street photography at night in my opinion.
