One of the best live performances ever. They establish this mellow groove right away then play off that with these intense runs. Everyone is great, and Knopfler's sound on the guitar is totally unique, like hearing Miles Davis play trumpet, you know right away who it is. Wish there were more bands like that today.

Definitely my favorite live performance of all time. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists you'll ever see, and this is him having a grand ol' time. Terry Williams is tearing it to shreds on the drums, playing his heart out. I always thought he was really trying his hardest here to prove he belonged, as he was fairly new to the band after the founding drummer, Pick Withers, had left. Alan Clark is wonderful on keyboards, and John Ilsey (bassiset) and Hal Lindes (rhythm guitar) are perfect support to Mark's genius. Glad you enjoyed it so much.

"Sultans Of Swing " is one of their most famous songs. But they have had so many hits including "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Tunnel Of Love", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.

    Loved your reaction.
I really feel I'm getting old, when so many people just discovered Dire Straits :)
Mark Knopfler. The best guitarist in the world. I'm so glad I got to see them perform in Copenhagen in the 1980s. We were actually told by the venue to remain seated at all times during the concert. At the second song we were ALL off our seats and ON our seats dancing.... "slightly" encouraged by mr Knopfler himself. After all they couldn't throw all of us out. So we were up there dancing throughout the concert -everyone!
And Sultans is the best Dire Straits song ever ♥️
    Cheers Susan

What a lovely reaction. It almost does become too much, doesn't it?
I've seen Mark Knopfler - the singer and writer and lead guitar in concert a couple of times - he's a lot older now, as are we all, and he's lost a bit of dexterity on the strings, but he's still performing and making music.
I agree with others, Telegraph Road from this concert is fantastic too. And Romeo and Juliet. The 1985 Wembley verskion of Tunnel Of Love is the best one, as El Capitan says below.
But think on this: this was the 'Love Over Gold' tour from 1983. They did this EVERY NIGHT!

    • @jennywren7822
      @jennywren7822 2 года назад +1

As you say you're getting older you should realise why Mr Knopfler's lost a bit of dexterity on the strings, wrists and fingers stiffen and become painful especially if you've used them a lot, and of course he always uses his fingers, no pick, obvious really. I've watched him play with his fingers this and Telegraph Road in his concerts 2015 when he was 65 upwards, and sometimes he's shaken his wrist and fingers quite strongly.
He stopped touring in 2019 after his last tour, when he was 69 and still playing remarkably well with his FINGERS.
He's 72 nearly 73 now a very young old man 😊 and long may he reign....

@@jennywren7822 Yeah, he ended his carreer. Man, I saw him so often in concert, since the "Brothers in Arms" tour. For a long time John Illsley (bass) wanted the "Dire Straits" back, but Mark had no interest in world wide-stadia-tours anymore. He enjoyed his performing with his "guys" in smaller venues, somehow much more interested in putting way more folk-music in it, with his great musicians. For me his later concerts weren´t "Rock-"concerts anymore, just a nice evening to close the eyes, relax and dream off. Also thank him endlessly for that period of his career.

Done with Bonaparte, Piper till the end, Taormina concert 2013, Madison Square Garden 2019 I've watched on here, after thinking No Telegraph Road in other concerts I'm not interested in this.
Time passes I'm 75 now an old lady, and rediscovered Mark Knopfler and his genius 6 months ago, in his last tour he had 10 musicians in his band, it must have been magical.
I've also discovered what a lovely man he is, very appreciative of his audience and sweet being his chosen word.
Thank god for utube, we have Alchemy live to watch and listen too for ever, I don't think Telegraph Road then will ever be beaten.
He's kept away from the dangerous showbiz scene and unlike Elvis still here with us.
You're so lucky to have experienced him live.....

It's about the "pub band" music scene in South London - and despite the long Covid lockdowns, it's re-emerging and still doing its' thing. I'm 70 and still see 2 or 3 pub bands in any week. (My "local" is one such pub).
Pubs that still do live music are one of the main reasons we have so much musical talent in the UK.

They really are special telegraph road from this gig is even better and any performance of Romeo and Juliet is brilliant as well, I usually prefer the original recording of brothers in arms to live versions but it’s usually better to watch them live.

The song is about a jazz band the lead guitarist saw. They were called 'the Sultans of Swing' and they had almost no audience. The song is a recognition of these people, by some really good musicians. The lead guitarist of Dire Straits is Mark Knopfler - one of the world's best guitarists.
