The ONLY other WipEout game I've played was WipEout Pure on the Vita. But other than that, I mainly played WipEout 64. BTW, WipEout XL was also on the Saturn.
WipeOut 3 SE on the PS beats this one for me. It has better graphics in total, better sound, way more content AND the NeGcon. Still, this is a very good port!
Absolutely loved this game, my favorite racer after F-Zero X. It was one of the few racers that felt like you could completely master the controls and the challenge mode offered a really good challenge. What's funny is that the game actually really has only 1 unique track - Velocitar. All the other are from the first 2 PS1 releases but often mirrored or backwards mirrored with different textures: Klies Bridge = Talon's Reach for instance.
I've never really liked Wipeout, even when i got my PS1 at launch, i chose NBA JAM TE over it as myfirst game. (well that and ridge racer) But the N64 had F-ZERO and Exreeme-G, which i vastly prefered.
I think that Wip3out (or Wipeout 3) Special Edition was the best game in the Series, it has a ton of content (New Tracks as well as upgraded versions of tracks from Wipeout and Wipeout XL / 2096), it has an awesome Soundtrack, it really pushed the PS1 towards the systems limit, the framerate is solid at 30 FPS, even in Widescreen mode and the controls just feel right. I never liked the handling of the PS2 games. The N64 Version is a solid entry in the series, but like you said, the missing championship mode is just wierd. The only things I would like to see added in Wipeout 64 would be said championship mode and a mirror option to beef up the track numbers a bit.
The N64 edition was lucky to have got a release. Psygnosis had to basically test and release the game unfinished at the time as Sony were pushing through to close a loophole and have it blocked. It just made it out in time, hence why WipEout never appeared on another system after. It would have been interesting to see how this edition could have turned out if development wasn't so rushed...
I remember when I was around 3 years old in my old country, me and my older cousins (they were like a teen back then) went to a hotel to stay, I went somewhere in the hotel, and find a console with this game on. I thought it was a space game and such, but when the demo played, I was scared shitless. after that, I was actually afraid of these futuristic cars that hovers.
Yeah now that I compare the two, (only having wipeout on the ps1), I feel like F zero completely blows it out of the water when it comes to pure speed fantasy.
I never really got into Wipeout as a franchise until the PS Vita game, where it suddenly clicked for me and I found myself really liking it. I've since gone back to all the Playstation games and enjoyed them for the most part. I should add this to my collection though, never played it.
I've tried all of the PS1 games and the two PSP games. I like the idea and the look of them, but I never had much luck controlling them. I spend most of my time bouncing off the walls. That said, I found this version somewhat easier to control. I still didn't win any races, but I didn't feel like I was completely out of control like I did with the other versions. :)
I always thought that this was odd appearing on the N64 when it was basically owned by Sony, Psygnosis developed a few games for other consoles around this time. Destruction Derby on the Saturn being another.
OMG I PLAYED THIS GAME FOR GODLY HOURS AS A KID 😭 I loved it so much because you really DID need skill to be good at this and the satisfaction of finally getting 1st place was the best.
I owned both and I prefer 64. Analogue control makes for better, smoother feel in all axis, the unique to each craft weapons a plus, better track design IMO, and the challenges ensured for lots of replay value.
I was used to the handling on the PS1 versions that used digital controls, the control felt more floaty which I liked. With regards to the graphics there was something about the N64 version of the game while it looked very good I couldn't put my finger on it for a long time what it was that made it not look as good to me as the PS1 game and that was the inherent nature of the anti aliasing used on lower resolution textures that gave N64 games that blurry look. I think the game is worth picking up if you like Wipeout games and a worthy addition to the N64 library.
One of the few Wipeout games I ain't played yet, but yet to find something better than Wipeout 3 on the PS. It's not for everyone's taste due to it's speed and play, but I personally adore the wipeout series. A fair review Glenn. :)
I bought this game back around 2000 in a blockbuster, I bought it solely because it came with a memory pack that I desperately needed. At first I thought I was ripped off because the game sucked, but it grew on me a tad. Still not the greatest game, but wasn't a terrible racer and the soundtrack was pretty bomb.
this is definitely one of the best since the analog control is so spot on and tight nobody lacks analogue control with an n64 whereas the the original psx titles had to make do with digital control except for the lukcy few who had namcos neg con.
Honestly i think this game gives a huge success here in Europe but due to the N64 hardware limitation, he just could give he maximum as he could. Not huge fan of Wipeout of course, but were one of the best that the N64 could do.
I'm not a die hard fan of the Wipeout series but I do enjoy the games I have played in the series, Wipeout Pure for example being one the most played games on my PSP which is what prompted me to pick this one up, especially since it was only 5 bucks. I did enjoy about as much as I did Wipeout Pure......but I got bored pretty quickly. Once again, because I pretty dominate at any kind of racing game, I was able to finish everything in the game after only a few hours. Afterwords I realized that not only were the graphics better on my PSP but there was also more content on top of being a game I could play anywhere I wanted too. Overall, I don't think Wipeout 64 is a bad game but there are way better futuristic racers on the console, namely F-Zero X, which may not look as pretty but if full of content and better gameplay. I do not regret trading this game for Red Steel 2 on the Wii.
Jaeger Newman You cannot possibly be comparing a PSP game that came out 7 years later on a system with graphics of a weak PS2 to Wipeout 64 that had N64 graphics.
I'm just saying that there isn't much reason to play this game now. It's not like F-Zero X or Mario Kart 64 where there are things newer games don't have that keep one coming back to it.
Looks better than the PC port at least in when its in Software mode though some might say it looks better than some of the other graphics modes. Like the ati or Voodoo, at least depending on your preferance.
Destruction Derby and Wipeout were both on the PC in 1995. They were never PlayStation exclusives. Ridge Racer was inches from being released on PC too.
I had a mod idea for WipEout 64: to add a Championship mode. Shouldn't be too difficult to for someone capable enough. Scoring to be same as WipEout 2097.
I liked the Saturn version... oh ps... I'm a new sub, going through all your uploads atm... Could you take some time to review Body Harvest?? My all time fave N64 game :)
I've got the Saturn version, also made by Psygnosis. Has the same tracks, but different backgrounds. Saturn version has some terrible pop up but the jankiness has its appeal. N64 version wins by far though.
i own Nintendo 64 and playstation and i prefer playstation console more due to more games that interest me but Nintendo 64 had some great games though and i played wipeout first on playstation but i prefer it more on Nintendo 64 though feels right for nintendo 64
This version was such a dissapointment to me because of the lack of the Championship Mode. I never really played the PSX version all that much but I played the hell out of Wipeout Pulse on my PSP.
Perfectly valid complaints. Myself personally, this is my favorite racing game of that generation next to F-Zero X, and I got the most playtime (and the most rewarding feeling) out of the Time Trial modes. Taking the weapons and opponents out of the mix and learning each track and besting my own times (and at one point competing with some fellow RUclipsrs) felt the most rewarding to me.
I liked the music and graphics in the game, but never really enjoyed the gameplay. Of the racers I owned I spent a lot more time with Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Kart 64, and Top Gear Rally. Honorable mention to Beetle Adventure Racing, which I rented a couple of times, but never actually bought.
I remember that after playing F-zero, Xtreme G 1 and 2 , this game was a huge letdown for me, it didnt have the speed of F-zero nor the spectacular weapons of Xtreme G, it was nor here or there.
f zero games suck cept the first, the thing about whipeout is if u can get good enough to avoid the walls and hit the boosts u can go at near game breaking speeds, i own it on 64 ps1, import saturn, xbox, ps3 psp ps vita and the original is still my favorite, and to me this is the best version with better frame rate smoother graphics and less clipping. pulse is probably a close 2nd
I Loved the Wipeout series on the Playstation back in the day, and even though the N64 version looks better overall, the control is just not there for me, along with the music, I just felt they could have done so much more with this version of the game, like more tracks, more ships too fly, and made the controls a bit tighter.
also, Ive often felt like all the Wipeout games have a crap difficulty curve. My favorite track out of all the games is Valparaiso, from Wipeout XL. (w/'Tin there' by Underworld) - perfect
Good game but imo probably the weak link of the series from that era. It didnt seem to have as much content and the music (which was one of the series main selling points at the time) felt relatively flat.
I never liked the wipeout games. The controls always felt off to me. Im one of those F-Zero speed freaks i guess. xD Although the ps3 game was quite fun especially in glorious 3D.
I remember this game. We got it after playing F-Zero X for several years. Wipeout is highly mediocre compared to it. My brother and I were seriously bored with the game pretty much moments after playing the first track. F-Zero is simply 10 times superior. I don't slam Wipeout for being bad, it was just very flat in ever area. There are very few vehicles which all looked and felt the same. There are a serious lack of tracks which are not very innovative. But probably the thing that bugged me the most is the physics. The game has low acceleration, it feels stiff, lacks momentum based gameplay, and it's extremely easy to be slowed down followed by having to accelerate slowly again. Basically, it wasn't very smooth and fluid. I only remember complaining about the game though, which I haven't played basically since 15 years ago, so maybe if I tried it again I would be a little more accommodative for its type.
Wipeout 2097/XL on PS1 is alot better, Psygnosis had not much experience with the N64. Highly recommend Wipeout 3 Special Edition for PS1. This game is a absolut banger and filled with content. F-Zero and Wipeout only shared one thing, both are AG racers. But complete different in terms of gameplay and physics. 😊 Its like F1 and WRC.
Wipeout was also on Saturn (1st 2 games except the USA) & Windows, I think there even was one on an Amiga computer, too. The definitive versions were the PS1 ones, though.
The only Wipeout I've ever played all the way through was XL which was the second installment on the Playstation and it was excellent. Like you I wasn't and still am not a huge fan of the series. So Wipeout 64 is a very nice controlling version of the game and the graphics are a bit smoother than the Playstation, but like most Wipeout games it just didn't really pull me in like XL did. I'll have to revisit it again someday.
Tho i played both the ps1 and n64 versions, i didnt like wipeout until the ps2 version wipeout fusion... something about those courses and graphics appealed to me whereas even back in the day i felt the ps1 and n64 needed to wait for a next gen to create what the developers wanted.
I actually thought this game was crap. The controls were a nightmare. I've grown so used to tighter controls from other racers. This one paled in comparison. While the game is very speedy, which I appreciated, the track designs were too tight with twists and turns, that one couldn't take full advantage of the speed. You're prone to bumping into barriers and having them slow you down immensely. I'm a bit of a speed freak, so this is a huge let down for me. Why make a speedy game, when you can't really take full advantage of it? It's like making a super car race game, where you're forced to drive in school zones. For games like this one, I would have appreciated wider tracks. At least then, you could really enjoy the speed boosters throughout the game. Xtreme-G 2 is about two notches better and quite similar in game style. This game feels a bit unfinished and really doesn't have much to offer for re-play-ability, unless you're one who enjoys wasting hours away redoing challenges over and over. Tracks are limited. Vehicle selection is very limited. It's drab and dark... Almost depressing. I dunno...I guess some people must enjoy that. It didn't work for me.
Too hard to control.. track is too narrow.. bump into the rear of cars all the time..badly placed speed boosts that you end up bumping into the walls.. arrgh! Music is bleh.. overrated in my opinion
I never got around playing the PSX ones, but this was the game that really got me hooked. It's actually a great game.
KT Johnson have you gone back and played the ps games? the series is quite cool but lacks depth in comparison to some other futuristic racers
Gotta love that 90s rave music goodness though!
Absolutely loved this game, my favorite racer after F-Zero X. All the other are from the first 2 PS1 releases but often mirrored or backwards mirrored with different textures: Klies Bridge = Talon's Reach for instance.
What a great game. I got it for $5 on clearance back in the late 90s. One of the perks of working in electronics at Target.
The Game Bench this game blows
Just found out today this was out on the 64
I've never really liked Wipeout, even when i got my PS1 at launch, i chose NBA JAM TE over it as myfirst game. (well that and ridge racer)
But the N64 had F-ZERO and Exreeme-G, which i vastly prefered.
Always good taste Larry! The Wipeout games on PSP were very enjoyable if you're ever feeling in the mood though..
You were like a brother to me Larry! Now you are Lost!!
I'm with you. F-Zero X is a far better game in my opinion.
I never grew up with this or Extreme G. Only FZero GX. Regaddless, I love these scifi racers.
WypeOut was my first game for the PS1. The N64 game looks great.
This game was pure perfection.
Midway Published In US on PS1 Psygnosis Games
I really loved this game I all ways played it on the PS1 and was buzzin when it game to the 64

Spent an entire night beating this game. Really fun! That forest track whooped my ass in time trials but I learned it and it was super satisfying.
buy and after seeing the honest reviews I liked the N64 than the playstatio
I remember when I was around 3 years old in my old country, me and my older cousins (they were like a teen back then) went to a hotel to stay, I went somewhere in the hotel, and find a console with this game on. I thought it was a space game and such, but when the demo played, I was scared shitless. after that, I was actually afraid of these futuristic cars that hovers.
Had no idea it made it to the n64, in fact I had the Sega Saturn version. Anyway from your vid, looks like a tidy conversion.
I should add this to my collection though, never played it.
worth a play then especially if you're quite new to the series, theres better games in the series but this is a fun blast
Thanks for the review, I buy this game yesterday. XD
Just recently got this at a gaming market and really enjoying it. Shame there's no championship or grand prix but it's good fun for 20 mins or so
i actually found the controls on this are what made it so good, the handling was so far ahead of the ps versions
Yeah the analogue compared to dpad for the launch wipeout was a night and day difference
This one was a suprise to me, if you dont have it yet, buy it. It is epic
This was my first game on N64
Quite an unusual choice but cool!
@@n64glennplant it came with my system but I was very happy with it.
I always thought that this was odd appearing on the N64 when it was basically owned by Sony, Psygnosis developed a few games for other consoles around this time. Destruction Derby on the Saturn being another.
Gunnerholic he literally says this in the beginning of the video.
OMG I PLAYED THIS GAME FOR GODLY HOURS AS A KID 😭 I loved it so much because you really DID need skill to be good at this and the satisfaction of finally getting 1st place was the best.

thank you, if you like the rest of the series then you'd probably dig this one
I miss this game :/ I only rented it as a kid, so I never actually had it.
Believe or not, I never played the psx version of Wipeout (even ps2)
F Zero made me futuristic racing games fan and wipeout 64 can't be missed
This was the first iteration of the series to get analog control as well I believe. This was later featured in Wipeout 3 and Wipeout 3 SE on the PS1
It wasnt. You forget the NeGcon.
Exactly. Wipeout 1 + NegCon = Analog Control in 1995
this is definitely one of the best since the analog control is so spot on and tight nobody lacks analogue control with an n64 whereas the the original psx titles had to make do with digital control except for the lukcy few who had namcos neg con.
The NeGcon was the perfect way to play it IMO.
Also very fitting for the futuristic setting.
Honestly i think this game gives a huge success here in Europe but due to the N64 hardware limitation, he just could give he maximum as he could. Not huge fan of Wipeout of course, but were one of the best that the N64 could do.
The game was great. It took me a lot of perseverance to get all the gold ratings. All of them.
I'm not a die hard fan of the Wipeout series but I do enjoy the games I have played in the series, Wipeout Pure for example being one the most played games on my PSP which is what prompted me to pick this one up, especially since it was only 5 bucks. 64 all the way
Looks better than the PC port at least in when its in Software mode though some might say it looks better than some of the other graphics modes. Like the ati or Voodoo, at least depending on your preferance.
I like how the only bad thing about the game is that there isnt enough of it
Quite a nice version on the N64, still the controls are a bit convoluted - but that's the case in every port of this game.
Destruction Derby and Wipeout were both on the PC in 1995. They were never PlayStation exclusives. Ridge Racer was inches from being released on PC too.
But psygnosis was bought by Sony, that is why it feels weird and explains only the first games of these franchises were multiplat
I had a mod idea for WipEout 64: to add a Championship mode. Shouldn't be too difficult to for someone capable enough. Scoring to be same as WipEout 2097.
This game loved but it had a bug and the game crashed everytime I went onto the final lap of the last race!
Good review
Thanks
One of the dew PS games that i enjoyed. Even better that it is on a better console!
Hi again,
Great review, I need to get this Game one day. It looks not that fast but I am sure it is fun to play.
Greetings from London
Andre ;-)
good review! You ever consider reviewing non-n64 stuff?
wipeout64 was one of my all time favorites. Better than the PS version.. lol.. I'm a Nintendo fan though
i own Nintendo 64 and playstation and i prefer playstation console more due to more games that interest me but Nintendo 64 had some great games though and i played wipeout first on playstation but i prefer it more on Nintendo 64 though feels right for nintendo 64
its very good and it out does the ps1 games, even the music sounds great! when you record your footage what cables do you use? component, scart etc?
I think he used S-Video back then
Great review Glenn :-) looks great and agree you can't compare it to f zero ! :-) hope you are well
The N64 version is lucky to have got a release. It is a good game but it was clearly released unfinished although bug free and in beta form.
liveswired there are defo pieces of the game which are very unfinished for sure
BAR is one of my all time fav racers on the console, the console really was great for racers in my opinion
Review Hexen 64 please?
ill sure try to get around to it :)
***** Thanks, I subscribed because of your Quake, Quake 2, and Doom 64 reviews. I've really been hoping for a Hexen 64 one too. :)
I remember that after playing F-zero, Xtreme G 1 and 2 , this game was a huge letdown for me, it didnt have the speed of F-zero nor the spectacular weapons of Xtreme G, it was nor here or there.
looks better than the ps1 version which was awesome.
I heard of the wipeout series and it was fun but I still prefer the f zero series great review glenn ^_^
i prefer f zero too :)
***** I grew up playing f zero so I think it will always be one of the best n64 racers cant wait for your next review my friend ^_^
f zero games suck cept the first, the thing about whipeout is if u can get good enough to avoid the walls and hit the boosts u can go at near game breaking speeds, i own it on 64 ps1, import saturn, xbox, ps3 psp ps vita and the original is still my favorite, and to me this is the best version with better frame rate smoother graphics and less clipping. pulse is probably a close 2nd

Agree with you on the controls
The nostalgia
amen to that christian
I want to be good at this game...
I thought this was a good translation to another system. Not my fave in the series, but a good game.
also, Ive often felt like all the Wipeout games have a crap difficulty curve.
My favorite track out of all the games is Valparaiso, from Wipeout XL. (w/'Tin there' by Underworld) - perfect
Good game but imo probably the weak link of the series from that era. It didnt seem to have as much content and the music (which was one of the series main selling points at the time) felt relatively flat.
great Glenn, PS1 version for me Im afraid, its all about the soundtrack and the high speed mixture, the n64 just doesn't seem built for it :(
Hate the challenge stuff.
I never liked the wipeout games. The controls always felt off to me.
Im one of those F-Zero speed freaks i guess. xD
Although the ps3 game was quite fun especially in glorious 3D.

Its like F1 and WRC.
Even if I'm not fan of the series, This is one of the first games I had on N64!

2097 is a better sounding sequel though.
I got this instead of f zero. its cheap now
f-zero x>>>>>>>>>>>wipeout 64...all said wipeout 64 is a good game nonetheless
i just remember play wipeout like a bumpin car.... i idid a better job with xtreme g thou
retrovideogamejunkie extreme g is a cool series ill do them soon
i rly liked, mostly that blurry effect when you get a great velocity...
As always... N64 version > PS1 version.
There was no PS1 version of this game.

It didn't work for me.
woooooooohohohohhohohooooo!!!
loved it but never played it on n64
worth a quick play, definitely not a game you'll be playing years later but cool for a quick blast
It def showed up the playstation 2097 at the time, you could not beat the speed, or the 4 player fun.
Nothing holds up against F-Zero X. Nothing. Ever.
wipeout in n64 ?????
Who cares about Wipeout, when we got F-Zero X?
Too hard to control.. track is too narrow.. bump into the rear of cars all the time..badly placed speed boosts that you end up bumping into the walls.. arrgh! Music is bleh.. overrated in my opinion
