    The mystery item is not a hatpin holder. It is a Victorian holder for wooden spools of thread. There are rods missing, only 2 are shown. The spools would be placed on each level and the rod would go down through the middle of each spool holding them in place vertically. The top is a pin cushion.

    • @Marialla.
      @Marialla. Месяц назад +2

      OMG I can see that working so well! For a hand sewist you don't need your spools of thread to be loose, you just need to be able to draw a length off, of the color you need.
      Sewing machines changed all that, so now thread spools must be loose so different colors can be switched into the machine.
      But this design would keep them organized and they wouldn't get lost.

    • @Marialla.

      Then again, holding long hat pins wouldn't be a bad use for it also. I can see a woman using it for both simultaneously.

    The item for piercing a can. The product would be evaporated milk. You would not get sweetened condensed milk to flow from a hole that small.

      @@bettyir4302 It's reusable, washed and used over and over.
      I agree that this would have been used for evaporated milk, not sweetened condensed milk.
      Before infant formula was available, babies were fed reconstituted evaporated milk. Since the whole can wasn't used at each feeding, this cover/opener was ideal for keeping the unused milk fresh in the fridge for the next feeding.
      I was a "Carnation" baby, my mom was 41 when I was born in 1961, and she couldn't produce enough milk to breastfeed. Not ideal, and I was constantly sick as a baby. I'm glad there's formula nowadays.

    I didn't recognize the evaporated milk holder as such, but the design of the top did suggest it was meant to puncture a can lid. People might wonder why two holes were necessary. The second hole was to let air into the can so the contents would pour smoothly.
    I've never seen a tea infuser spoon of this design before, but I did work out what it was meant to be.
    I have a carving fork like the one at 5:25. I never knew what that the purpose of extra piece was. I had an idea, but it turns out I was wrong. Thanks for the proper information!
    If I recall correctly, another name for the type of drawknife seen at 6:20 is a 'spokeshave'. That's the word that came to mind when it appeared onscreen.

  • @LazyIRanch
    @LazyIRanch Месяц назад +6

    I got the rangefinder, the evaporated milk opener/lid, the tea strainer, the carving knife and the spokeshave (draw knife).
    I own a spokeshave, a similar (but better) tea strainer, and vintage rangefinder.
    I remember my mom having the carving fork and the evaporated milk opener/lid.
    When I was born in 1961, my mom was 41. She couldn't produce enough milk to breastfeed, and formula wasn't a thing yet, so I was fed Carnation Milk, thinned with boiled water. That was common back then. The item she had actually had the Carnation milk logo and probably came with a case of the stuff.
    I'm so glad there's formula now for the mothers who can't breastfeed. I hate it when people put down mothers who use formula... sure, breast-fed is ideal but FED is best, and formula now is way better than the stuff I was given as a baby.

      I was born in 1960 and Mom was in her late 30's. I admit I have no idea if Mom used formula or just what. So many little things about your parents you never even think to ask. And it's 10 years too late now.

    The pie / cake marker, still made and used today in commercial kitchens where you are selling cake or pie by the slice. Though the modern models tend to just a straight edge rather than the spikes more often.

    Pretty good day for me, I knew the pie marker, condensed/evaporate milk holder, the loose tea spoon, the purpose of that little lever on the cutting fork, and the drawknife. I guess all those hours helping Mom in the kitchen paid off. And I used a drawknife quite a bit in shop class, when you were still allowed to use tools that may cause injury if misused ;) I just wish I'd payed more attention to the recipes for all the things Mom used to make.

    I recognized two today - the pie/cake marker and the can piercer. And yes, people were correct - it was for regular canned milk, not the sweetened condensed milk which is used for cooking. It’s way to thunk to even manage to get through those small pierced holes! Many people do confuse regular condensed milk with sweetened condensed milk - two very different products.

    You are correct that it is draw plane. But it's a specialty draw plane. It was used to cut a rounded groove lengthwise in the bottom of a log that was used in the building of a log cabin.
    The groove sits on top of the log beneath it. It makes it more stable, and drastically reduced the amount of insulating mud required to make it wind and weather resistant.
