Brick is man-made; not a building material with natural beauty like stone. Painting over brick is just a personal color preference. I personally hate red brick; I would've painted it too.

Their approach may be ok on a thin coil, but on thicker ones, you're always creating an unnecessary heat transfer problem each time you push the dirt deeper in.
