** play 의 다양한 의미와 활용
    1) 놀다(주로 아이들 involved)
    - i played with my son
    - i played with my daughter
    - i played with my kids
    - i'm going to play with my kids this weekend, in the park
    - my kids play here all the time
    - it's not safe for children to play here because cars drive through here all the time
    2) 가지고 놀다 / 가지고 장난치다 + with
    - stop playing with your food
    - don't play with your food
    - my cat likes to play with my hair
    - you should't play with poeple's feelings like that, that's really bad
    3) 틀다 (play 버튼 누르는 행위에 focusing)
    - play a video / play a song(music) / play a movie
    - now, i'm gonna play a video for you
    - when i'm working on my computer i like to have some soft music playing in the background
    4) play a role/part 어떤 역할을 하다
    - he plays the most important role in the team
    - for a star(actor) of his stature (지명도, 위상), he played a surprisingly small role in the film
    5) play along 협조, 동의, 동조하는 척하다 + with sth/sb
    - i didn't quite understand what was going on, but i tried my best to play along
    - i knew my daughter was lying but i played along just to see where it goes (상황이 어떻게 흘러가는지 보려고, where things go)
when you see and hear this word 'play', what's the first thing that comes to mind, what's
the first korean word or expression or meaning that comes to mind... 'play'.
i'm betting that (무엇에 대한 확신을 표현할 때)
most of you immediately thought of the expression '놀다' right? As in 친구랑 놀다? so you probably thought of sentences like i played with my friends yesterday or i'm gonna play with my friends this weekend. However there's something that we have to be very careful about because it's actually really weird for an adult to say this, okay? When it's not a child but when an adult says i played with my friends this weekend or last weekend, it sounds it actually sounds really weird, (almost) to the point (that 어떠할 정도로 심하다는 얘기할 때...또는) of being creepy (으스스한, (섬뜩해서)기이한, 소름끼치는), okay? well maybe not creepy but definitely weird because adults just usually don't say that.
Adults would most likely say something like, i met up with my friends, i met up with some friends, i hung out with some friends, i spent some time with my friends, okay?
usually they don't say you know, we usually don't say, i played with my friends, okay? now you could say i played with my kids when children are involved in the activity then it's perfectly fine, okay? so you can say, oh i played with my son, i played with my daughter, i played with my kids, i'm going to play with my kids this weekend, in the park, okay? that's perfectly fine and especially when the kids are the subject of the context, so you can say, oh my my kids play here all the time, my kids play um.. in this area all the time, um it's not safe for children to play here because cars drive through here all the time, okay? so in that kind of context it's perfectly fine, okay?
however you as an adult should not say, i played with my friends, like i said there are other options we can say, i spent some time, i met up with some friends, i hung out with some friends, okay? However there are several other ways that we can use the word 'play'. Of course we can't go over all of them today but i do want to go over just a few of the most commonly used and easy ones with you okay?
all right so i have a list right here.
so the word 'play' can be used similarly to 놀다 but a little different with, 가지고 놀다 / 가지고 장난치다 okay? so and of course you can probably guess what the preposition is we play 'with' something, so for example you might tell your kid, hey stop playing with your food, don't play with your food. Another example would be um you know my cat likes to play with my hair
well i barely have hair but you know let's say you're a woman and your cat likes to play with your hair you can say, oh my cat likes to play with my hair, okay? so you can kind of see how that word is used in that sort of context so it's it's very similar to 놀다 but it's a little different when we say play with something, okay? another example.. another good example would be uh you shouldn't play with people's feelings like that, you know, you really shouldn't play with people's feelings like that, that's really bad, you shouldn't play with people's feelings, okay? so what does that mean? play with someone's feelings, i mean, just by translating you can immediately understand what it means right now. that's really bad okay? you shouldn't play with people's feelings like that, that's that's really bad. it's really bad, okay? it's really bad to play with people's feelings like that, okay? so that's another way we can use play with okay? another really common way the word 'play' is used is when we say play a video or play a song or play music, play a movie, so what's the word that corresponds to (무엇에 해당되는, 들어맞는) this? 틀다, right?
so for example you can say, um now i'm gonna play a video for you, of course when we say it like this we are focusing on the act of pressing the play button, okay? so instead of saying you know oh he played a video for us during the live stream; during the live stream he played a video for us, instead of that we can just easily say he showed us a video but there's certainly a difference between showing you a video and playing a video for you okay? so in korean there's also a difference. showing you a video means 영상을 보여주다 right? but playing a video for you means 영상을 틀어주다 okay? so in this context (the play really) it really matches the word 틀다 in almost every way, the meaning and the nuance, it means 틀다, okay? so another way we can use play in this context would be um when i'm working on my computer i like to have some soft music playing in the background. i like to have some soft music playing in the background when i'm working on my computer, right? when i'm working on my computer i like to have soft music 부드러운 playing in the background.

Wife: Honey, did you ever get the microwave oven to work?
Husband: Sorry, I was a bit but never got it to work.
Wife: It's been over a week. Should I call a repairman?
Husband: No, you don't need to. Let me look at it now. I'm serious this time. Gonna stop and get it fixed.
    ...after 15 minutes...
Wife: Is it fixed yet? Dinner is ready so why don't you take a break?
Son: I'm already done with my dinner. Let me and see what is wrong.
    ...after 10 minutes...
Son: It's working now! Not sure exactly what happened but I think we pushed . I just had to unplug the power and then turn it back on...and I think it reset the microcontroller.
Wife: Wow, good job son. I will add a $20 bonus to your allowance this week for being an expert electronics repair guy.
Son: Well I am still your son but I can as long as I am getting extra money...hahaha.
*fiddle with it: 이것저것 만저보다, 시도 해보다
    *play around: 장난치다
*play with: fiddle with it 하고 같음
*too many buttons a little too fast: 많은 버튼을 좀 너무빨리
    *play along: 그런척하다, repairman 인척하다

Another i think this is the third one; another really common way we use the word 'play' is when we were talking about playing a role; playing a certain role in something, so in korean we would say 어떤 역할을 하다, a role or we can also say a part okay? it plays a certain part of something, so for example he plays the most important role in the team, he plays the most important role in the team. so you know there's some team and there's this one person and he plays the most important role. i don't know exactly what kind of situation that would be but you know it's just an example, so we can say he plays the most important role in the team. have you seen the movie 'life'...the title is just life... life.. it's a sci-fi movie. it's a movie about uh finding alien life in space, okay? and in that movie uh one of the actors in that movie is ryan reynolds. ryan reynolds i'm sure he's the main actor in deadpool, so (he's a) he's like a top star actor right? but in that movie (maybe i shouldn't say this) so what i want to say, the example that i want to give you is for a star for an actor of his stature, okay? for a star of his stature, he played a surprisingly small role in the film. for an actor; for a star of his stature; stature means the height of someone's reputation or his stardom, okay? someone's or not only stardom but popularity, reputation more like reputation, so the height of someone's reputation, okay? ..stature. so when you say um you know for a star for an actor of his stature 그렇게 유명한 배우치고는; for an actor of his stature; for a star of his stature he played a surprisingly small role in the film, he played a surprisingly small role in the film, alright? the last thing i want to show you today is to play along, okay? this is a phrasal verb. now there are many phrasal verbs that we can um use with play, but i just want to show you this one today, okay? so to play along, so what does that mean, play along? um or to play along with the situation, it means if there's a situation and you play along with that situation, it means you adjust yourself to it so that you don't interrupt the situation, you don't interfere with the flow of the situation, okay? so for example, uh i didn't quite understand the situation but i tried my best to play along. i didn't understand the situation but i tried my best to play along, okay? what does that mean? i tried my best to adjust myself, uh so that the situation is not interrupted, okay? i played along and when you play along, it often means that you act uh and you're just focusing on um adjusting to that situation so that you're not interrupting or interfering with the situation, okay? another example, um this might be a little bit complicated but let me try. let's say that your kid told you something and you knew that your kid was lying, okay? uh so you have a daughter and she told you something and you knew she was lying but just to see where it goes; just to see uh where the situation goes. you played along so what does that mean? it means you knew she was lying but you played along so you pretended like you believed her, okay? and why? just to see where it goes, just to see where the situation goes, okay? so that's what playing along means; you adjust yourself to a situation, um so that you don't interrupt it, okay? i think you can understand what that means, alright? uh
so play it's not just 놀다 okay? there are a lot of different ways we use this word, but i think because of that strong connection between the word 'play' and the meaning of 놀다, (the korean expression 놀다) because of that strong association (연관/연상) that we all have; that you tend to have; with these two words, it's kind of hard to use it in different ways; in different contexts like the ones that i uh covered today but um it's not that hard um all you need is some time and some practice to get used to it okay? alright, so that's pretty much all i have for you today. i think this will turn out to be a pretty short video, um i hope you have a great rest of your day and i will see you probably tomorrow.

Many parents these days tend to play RUclips videos for their kids while they’re at a restaurant to keep them quiet.
The other day, my friends and I had drinks and it was super fun. The thing is, I didn’t actually hear a single word my friends were talking about at the bar. The background music was too loud and I just played along. We still had fun though.

I was at this store the other day where they sold camping equipment and I found some flexible LED strips. I think they're intended to be used on tents but I thought they would make for good ambient lighting in my home office, so I picked up a couple of them. I knew I wanted to place them on my wall, but they didn't have any adhesive element to them, so I wasn't sure how I would secure them on the wall. Fortunately, I was able to squeeze them into the spaces between the acoustic foam boards that I've mounted on the wall(I have those foam boards mounted on my walls and ceiling for acoustics). I was pleasantly surprised at how tightly they're held in there.

    문득 궁금한게 있습니다. 좀 이상한 질문이 될수도 있는데요.. 예를 들어 go over 이라하면 우리말로 '검토하다' 라는 뜻이 되는데, 이게 미국사람들이 얘기할때 go over 하면 go와 over 이 합쳐져서 검토하다라는 전혀 다른 뜻으로 말하는게 되는건지 아니면 '가다'란 뜻인 go와 ~에 대해서 라는 뜻의 'over' 인 두단어를 말함으로써' ~에 대해서 가다' 란 뜻으로 검토하다라는 뜻을 내비춘건지.. 미국인 입장에서 어떤 feeling으로 말하는건지 궁금합니다;

      Interesting question.
저도 영어를 원어민 수준으로 하는 게 아니라 정말 원어민의 입장으로서 설명할 수는 없지만 그냥 제가 느끼는 것을 말하자면,
go over 라는 표현은 거의 언제든지 cover 로 대체할 수 있어요. I want to go over just a few with you. = I want to cover just a few with you.
"I thought we went over this.", "Didn't we go over this?" 이런 식으로 go over 를 쓸 수 있어요. 이 맥락에서는 검토의 느낌보다는 어떤 영역을 다뤄서 cover 했다는 뉘앙스가 많이 느껴지는 것 같아요.
I don't know if this is the explanation you were looking for, but I hope this helps 😀

      Here is my opinion.
Phrasal verbs can often mean entirely different than the individual words that make up the phrase. But in this case, it's pretty self-explanatory.
      가장 많이 쓰이는 뜻으로
      1. 그곳에 가다 go over to a place: I am going over to my friend's house.
      2. 검토하다 go over a document: I am going over your proposal now.
      1번 2번 둘다 이란 뜻입니다.
