- Self Sufficiency on small acreage starts with a garden and its production. You can't have a homestead without a garden. This is my vegetable garden layout and how I get the most out of it. Along with the layout of my garden there is lots of organic gardening tips to get the most out of small space, how to keep the garden production and soil health in the garden and something I do for pest control. NOTE: While this garden is where I grow the largest amount of our vegetables, I also have several other smaller raised beds scattered around the property to help supply food for self sufficiency, plus many flower bed house eggplants, peppers and greens. :) Video for the near future!

Beautiful garden. My husband built raised beds for me because of a back injury and arthritis. I love them. They are three feet apart
Thank God for rainy days! I was quite disappointed not to be out in the garden today but I am now reminded that all things have a reason. I rarely watch RUclips during the growing season (too many things to do) but I needed to remind myself how to get my sweet potatoes ready for planting. How did I not run into you before? From what I have seen so far, your content is fabulous. I am growing on Vancouver Island, Canada in zone 9b. It sounds like we are almost the same climate from your frost free dates, except that mine is much wetter. I really look forward to seeing more of your videos as time allows. Thank you.
Thank you very much. So sweet to hear. We definitely get little rain. Averaging 11” a year. A few years back we only got 5”. So dry. How much rain in average do you receive there?
@@Alisorganics Wow. We average about 55" a year. We are in a period of drought now... meaning we got about 45" last year. Sounds like a lot but we do live in a rainforest! We actually have to truck fish up the river in order to spawn with that little rain.💚

I did a garden reset a year ago, I’m the same USDA zone, but NE TX with 50” of annual rainfall (guaranteed drought every August-October). The best thing I did for myself was decrease my bed widths to 30” and enlarge my paths to 30”. I also eliminated staggered beds for two main aisles running the length of the garden and perpendicular beds. I found the garden to be pure joy for hauling materials, navigating, space for plants to sprawl. Mine are also No Dig rows and elevated trough beds. Your right on about humidity and spacing, it’s very important that prevailing winds run parallel to the rows of tall crops. My paths are all deep arborist mulch for weed free garden of 2500 sq ft.
Oh I do wish my beds were further apart! Holy cow! 50” of rainfall. We have an average of 12” a year. A couple years ago we only got 7”. It was bad! 50”! Wow!

Love this garden! My favorite thing about it is showing how you can garden in a back yard space as you can clearly see other properties. So many people thing they can’t garden in a back yard because of space

You have a very nice setup there. I was surprised to hear that you garden in southern Utah. I have driven around there a fair bit, and you just don't see much in terms of gardens. At least in the st George region. You have obviously learned your climate and how to work with it.
Thank you! You are right. Not much gardening going on here. This area used to be full of large gardens and orchards. Slimming out for more building. We definitely stick out here! We are very close to St. George, about 2-3 degrees cooler in the summer. 😊

OH! BURRR! I thought we were going to have a cold year here, but so far it has been pretty mild. Our lowest this year was 19 F.

Have you ever done garden consulting? I am taking out more than half my yard and continuing the garden and trees. It's turned into a good sized project. I have it planned and mapped out. Just looking to get a few questions answered and lean on that 20+ years of experience!

Ali this channel is a god send! I have been thinking about this for retirement! I do have a question, how long could one be away from the farm assuming the farm is only plants and trees as i live apart from family. Could i harvest and keep seeds and return to tend to the land later on after an extended abscene it shouldn't be more than 3 months. Could a small farm do without animals? I do remember having allergies back in my grandma's homestead from the rabbits for some reason
That’s actually a hard question. We couldn’t leave for more than a week at our place, even if I didn’t have animals. If you had a person that could keep the ground while away it would work. Automatic watering systems would need to be in place. And of course the time of year you plan on leaving can make all the difference. The type of plants, ect. Vegetables need harvesting almost daily during the growing season. It would be nice to have a community that could all work together. We are in a hot part of the world and couldn’t get away during the summer for long. Lots of variables. 😉

Thank you !! How close together are your fruit trees? Do you prune hard once a year.
The trees near the garden are very close. 8 foot apart and I do keep them pruned through the season with one heavy pruning late fall.
Amazing garden. I’m also thinking of replacing my wood beds with stone. What type of blocks did you use, and are yours just dry stacked on dirt? Do you think it’s necessary to pour some type of footing? Any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks.
Thank you! I love these blocks. I just got them from Lowe’s. They are aradian concrete retaining wall blocks. I put them right on the ground. No footing. I did use a packing tool to make sure the ground was as solid as I could get it and only two blocks high. If they were much taller I might put a some type of footing or pack that fine gravel before laying. I did some beds years ago with retaining wall block and no footer and they are leaning in now, but they are 5 tall (2.5’).
Hi, what do you do to keep snakes out, more specifically rattlesnakes?
Luckily we don’t have rattlesnakes come in. We have lots of King snakes, which are helpful for that and they keep rodents down.
How do you deal with the bind weed? I have it really bad in an area that I want to garden in. We have tried everything to get rid of it including boiling it, burning it and spraying with salt and vinegar. Nothing works
That is a tough one for sure. My soil was awful when I started and had all those weeds, including bind weed. I solarized the soil for a few weeks, then tilled, then solarized again. I did this for several months. It was lots of work. I don't like to till, but I my soil wasn't good anyway. Then I laid a very thick layer of leaves. I gathered them from everyone i could. This choked out the weeds and weakened them enough that I could keep after them. As soon as they would start to grow, I pulled. They need that sunlight to keep growing healthy and I knocked down their lifeline. Every once in a while I still have a few here and there, but very minimal and easy to control. Diligent work!
