How NATURAL BUILDING is Making Homes SAFER & CHEAPER

  • It's time to re-think our current way of building at scale. Natural building is opening the doors to make our dwellings safer, accessible, cost effective, and beautiful.
We're 4 years into our natural building journey on our off-grid desert homestead, and recently had the opportunity to speak at the Southwest Alternative Building Conference in May of 2024. Jonathan wrote and researched this talk, and it went so well that we turned it into this video. Below are a ton of links, resources, and researched references if you'd like to dig deeper.

@@naps3386 it depends where you live so far as dampness goes, but with proper drainage and ventilation, it shouldn't be an issue. Also, below the frostline, temperatures unground stabilize to about 50 degrees compared to freezing temperatures above ground

@@naps3386actually the earth holds the temperature at a more temperate level even during the winter. Usually between upper 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit naturally so it is easier to warm an underground space and the walls will hold the thermal mass better.

that's a cool thing for building houses in your area. If you are comfortable with plumbing do it yourself but if you would rather hire an electrician do your electrical, just hire one. Here it takes licensed carpenters, electricians, plumbers, etc. to build.

There are more places beside Arizona who have recognized this type of building and put minimal regulations on the build, places meaning states and /or by various countries!! IF the area you live in does not allow for this type of building at this time, then you can submit for it to be accepted, and you can present how other areas have done it, and work closely with whatever agency/committee or whatever to work out the kinks for you and others to build this way where you live.
As far as building and having pros come in for the plumbing, etc., just one or several or for the entire build, it should be up to the owner to decide not rules or regulations dictating you must!!!’

I love watching this channel. There are some good reasons for it: You don't pretend to do everything by hand. When tools makes things easier, you use tools. You don't pretend your material is completely free, and you don't mind sharing how much it costs. And I am a firm believer in "grow where you are planted", so building with dirt makes perfect sense for your location. Not everyone has the land or the resources to do this. For those of us who have already invested in a "stick house", mobile home, or other mainstream home choice, I'm also in favor of "recycling" older homes. While sometimes toxicity of materials or decrepitude of the building make this impossible, don't listen to your kids, grandkids or other nay sayers who suggest, "Just strike a match to it and start over." Older homes can be "upcycled" (to use a current catch word). It just takes creativity and putting up with some inconvenience while restructuring. This was/is a fantastic post! Loved every minute of it, and look forward to future posts -- especially about that magnificent house. Just reminder: one great way to make a home sure isn't the only way. History of home building is both varied and amazing.

You could have mentioned log cabins or sod houses too. It's funny how the term "traditional house" has changed. "Traditional" now has nothing to do with historical but means "modern".
Having grown up in the muck fields of Indiana and now living in the peet bogs of northern Germany, I cringed when you said "Dirt doesn't burn."
I have a brick house with triple glazed windows. The solar on the roof provides nearly all of the electricity for about half the year, including the electric chain saw and wood splitter for the firewood and charging the electric vehicle in the driveway. Next step is electrically heated hot water in the summer. Unfortunately, in the winter, it just isn't enough... yet. I want to add more panels and would love to find a small wind powered generator that actually works...

This is something that I feel deep in my soul and would like everyone contemplating "The Big Move" to watch. Each of you has shown your intention to adapt to a better way of life a life that some would call "alternative" and look down their noses at.
You are the modern pioneers who are leaving the trappings of society behind as you lead future generations into a better life. It may not happen overnight, but believe me, it will happen. People are sick and tired of existing in what "society" calls a normal existence. Many are, like you, looking for an alternative, they are looking for a simpler way of life with a more intimate connection with nature. Somewhere, they can grow their own food and crops knowing they haven't been covered in pesticides and insecticides.
You are the leaders and, I salute each and every one of you...

Here at my place in Cochise County, long before I ever even had an inkling that I would own this place, I actually helped put the stucco on the home that would eventually be my straw bale home several years before I bought it. So, inadvertently, I had a hand in building it. Thanks for the video!

I have watched you and your family live your dreams from the moment you started. I am always excited to see what you have been up to and celebrate your wins with you. I am older and live in a fabulous stick house (as you referred to it) on a small 50 acres with gardens and chickens and views that literally take my breath away as the sun glistens off the lake. I am thrilled for your journey and this video was very informative and a bit demeaning at the same time to all that live in a “stick house” just my own opinion. Keep your dreams going and remember we all dream differently.

I don’t think it was demeaning at all. I think it you choose to see it as demeaning, that is in your control. I think it was positive and informative. A lot of us would take this path if our time was beginning again and where we live allowed it.

I knew it was important but never realized how important! I will be so Happy when I’m finally able to retire so I can get away from the city and start my own off grid building although I hope to start before I retire by buying land before then but it’s hard taking care of six people with very little help. You are so blessed to have a family that wants to help do it all! Wish I could get more followers it might help and then I could have more to post about❣️🙏 May God continue to bless you🙏!

We old people can't do what you are doing even though we agree with you. When we were young it was our dream to own a home. So we purchased a few acres of land and had a house framed and we did the rest. It was paid for as we went.
But it was on the grid and we did have a well and own sewer.
Our daughter moved far away and called us sad. So we sold and moved. I'm not sure we would have been able to stay there in our super old age. So we are still on our own but I feel for the next generation. We have grandkids.

I mean, they are experimental, but they aren’t technically classified that way in any sort of permits or anything

Ode to be connected to the LAND working directly WITH it, intimately discovering how the sun and moon light and delight it through the seasons, how water collects, how botanicals grow and glorious when able while your beautiful family CREATE, BUILD and DREAM both your "now" and your future TOGETHER.
This part of your "why" delights and inspires me and I'm so stoked for your awesome family, creations, hard work, habitats and land. Even though I've been settled into my land for decades now, living with huge gratitude for my gift of place, family (my "kids" in their 30's now), past past, present and future creativity, love, continued hard work on the land and a relationship to each stone and botanical that are pure joy, even after so many decades.......
I love and value your choices, your creativity, your family way and your land so full of life that you breath into it........
Wonderful how you live, go for it as you're learning and educating along the way, beautiful !

I want to build an earthen home as much as anything, but unfortunately I have several debilitations that make it impossible (pinched nerves all over my spine, anemia, fibromyalgia, and psoriatic arthritis, oh and ME/CFS, of course...)
I started researching sustainable building and farming practices about 15 years ago and my plan was to build right in your neighborhood! We actually own several parcels just down the road to the south of your homestead! I also researched affordability and great weather, and right where you are is about as good as it gets!
Until then, we are in Ohio and have a little permaculture oasis in our small town lot (under .2 acres)
    Thanks for sharing your journey!
