One of my very first interviews as a radio rookie - actually, I think it was my FIRST - was with Stephen Rea in his dressing room at the National Theatre where he was appearing. Back then, my modus machina was the standard BBC reporter's Uher tape machine and the medium was quarter inch tape. The Uher weighed about 10 lbs and if you managed to drop it on your foot, you might very well end up in hospital. Anyway, off I went, and the initial bit was fine, with no ice to be broken, as he'd worked with my pa and one of my brothers plenty. So, my first question was a classic long form Parkinson opener which clearly stumped Stephen who paused with a meaningful look on his face. 'Ha ha! I've got him', I thought, but then finally he broke the silence, and said ... 'should those things be going round?' He was, of course, referring to the tape reels. I had remembered the first part of my training which was to put the machine into play/record/pause, then adjust the levels for sound, then unpause - and off you want. Or not, as Mr. Rea had fortunately spotted.
