What happened to the Metropolitan? The dancers and the Ballet used to be an integral asset to the company. It's the same here in Europe. Ballet and opera companies are increasingly veering off in opposite directions. Ballet comes from opera and opera without Ballet is a poor man's music drama. I hate what's happened to the opera scene today.

TRISTEZZA.Assoluta.

I love it!! It IS campy--but that's part of the delight. Sort of Cecil B. Demillish--but just TRY and look away. This is an orgy! Lott funner than the office party that's for sure.

What I like is the technicality of the dancers in conveying a sense of debauchery, which is exactly what a bacchanale should be; A pile of half naked people displaying their highest forms of athletic and sculpted bodies and intertwined with each other. I could never coordinate or perform an art such as this.
However, some of their more coordinated movements come off to me as cheesy...especially during the beginning motifs and the finale, when it just looks like they're all doing "the monster mash". Everyone should be getting smashed in the graveyard, not doing the graveyard smash. Sometimes their coordinated mass movements don't even align with the music or are just repetitive, especially around 1:10.
    Just my two cents.

Where's the orgy and the debauchery and the lust? If there's a bacchanale it is not here. A most boring spectacle of what certainly is one of the most spectacular scenes in any opera.

+Henry Baskerville These days they might actually let the ballet dance nude or at least so scantily clad as to just as well be nude. Might be interesting.Might see riots at the opera to rival Stravinsky's Rite of Spring at the ballet back in the 1920s. I'd pay to see that (the riot...well, the dancers too, I guess, and the opera, and hear the singing).

One minor quibble. There was only the one riot (probably arranged by Diaghilev anyway reading between the lines) for the Rite of Spring and that was at its premiere in 1913, and not in the 1920s.

Cheesy and campy. Very Cecille B. DeMille. Old women and gay men would love it.

OisirM you are wrong. I am very happily gay. I have good taste and I still think this is over the top nonsense. I am entitled to my opinion. It is you who show your true colours with your prejudicial assumption that I must be straight to have stated my opinion. How sad for you.
