To those wondering what it means, I can help. I'm a French major!: The too pallid moon rests as a diadem on your red hair/ The too red moon splashes your tattered skirt with it's glory/ The too pale moon caresses the whites of your indifferent eyes/ Princess of the street be most welcome in my broken heart Chorus:... My sweet Mandigotte* I can feel your hand as it searches for mine/I can feel your breasts and your thin waist, I forget my sorrow/ I feel on your lips the fever of an underfed child/ In your caress I could fall into an annihilating trance *Mandigotte is a nice term for beggar. I'm in love with this song and have been since I was in HS. Learning to speak French has only made me love it that much more.
Aria Briar "La Butte" means a sort of hill, and when capitalized it means the Montmartre hill, a neighborhood in Paris. The title of the song is "the lament of La Butte", so the lament of Montmartre. It's... a very very sad song. The last verse just says the poet loses his love as the moon wanes, and in the introductory verse (not sung here) it's said he "briefly loved her one night, never to see her again, but composed this song in hope that she will hear it on a street corner"... One, of course, assumes that the little beggar girl has in fact resorted to prostitution, alas.
Aria Briar Also, the chorus means "the stairs of the Montmartre hill are harsh to the poor, the wings of the windmills protect lovers..." This means the Moulin Rouge, but more than that, there were actual windmills on that hill still in the early XXth century. There aren't anymore, though.
To anyone wondering who the artist is covering this song - it is the incomparable Rufus Wainwright. A hugely talented musician, songwriter, singer, and performer. Rufus' live performances are simply amazing. This is not being sung by Ewan MacGregor.
pierrot6122 Oh how I'd love to go to Paris. To see the actual Moulin Rouge. Just to experience it, and the city this incredible movie was based on. *dreams
Such a lovely song. Rufus is simply wonderful. To those who have asked about his nationality, he is American - he was born in New York state, but spent most of his childhood in Quebec after his parents divorced. He now calls NY City home. His father is Loudon Wainwright III - American folk singer. Mother is Kate McGarrigle - a Canadian, recently deceased.
I remember watching Moulin Rouge late at night and listening to those beautiful songs including this one, best times ever, this movie made my life very special at that time
Such a beautiful song. And Rufus does it justice! His voice is like a fine wine. Rufus is even better in a live performance than on a CD. An amazing performer.
Oh, this is so lovely. Rufus' voice is sublime. I never tire of hearing him sing. He is so talented and his voice is like a good, smooth glass of sherry.
i've just realized that this song is Moulin Rouge soundtrack, hahaha.. after this long time... well, actually, i watched the movie last week, and i already know the song like 1 year ago, so i was surprised, i really like this song and also the movie (since i've already seen it).
An incredible rendering from the complaining from the Butte Montmartre. BRAVO for this incredible VERSION in french! MERCI BEAUCOUP from Paris France. Emmanuel
(8). So beautiful, proud to be french just for ear this song
Went to the Moulin Rouge for their Valentines dinner show last night and they sang this during dinner - blew me away... The show and experience was amazinging; if you ever get the chance you should grab it.
Montmartre is the place to go when in Paris.. I`m totally in love with Paris! Listening to this song makes me feel like I`m trully on the escaliers de la Butte .. It`s amazing, I love it!
x10000000000 he made the most adorable marcel marceau. :-D i loved him as a jackass stoned out of his mind and reckless. and i love him so much more sober and vulnerable.
@yourfatmuma1990 Rufus is American. Born in NY state. His father is American folk singer Loudon Wainwright III and his mother was Kate McGarrigle, a Canadian folk singer. Rufus is American, but may hold dual citizenship with Canada. Not sure about that.
Rufus does a great job on this track. The version by Cora Vaucaire is quite nice as well. Someone on here indicated that she sang this song as well. Glad to know both.
I really like this song. I'm French so I don't think such things as "French is a beautiful language", but the lyrics and the melody are so beautiful, it makes me feel sad and happy at the same time (yeah, it's hard to describe). This was the song of the first dance of my sister's wedding. PS: It's not "Complainte du la butte" but "Complainte de la butte".
@MathiasMeziane How sad ! His mother, Kate McGarrigle of The McGarrigle Sisters, had every reason to be proud of her son. At the same time he could be proud of his mother, who with her sister Anna made beautiful music in both French and English. I feel terrible about Kate dying.
I Love Paris!
It's Rufus Wainwright, not Ewan MacGregor. And in the movie it's actually in the back ground in one of the scenes and not a main song sung by anyone actually acting. XD
i am french too but i understand what he say ! and his accent is good for a man who don't speak french ! but you should listen the real version of "caura vaucaire" i want fell in love when i hear this song ... i love this song so much this is real poesie ! its a pity our generation don't know this kind of old song like leo ferre and stuf , now they just know david guetta and stuf ... sounds like shit to me ! bonne journée
I've listened 2 this since I was born. it's the only song that would calm my autistic brother. I'm playing it for him now. he remembers it😊
Music is my life you're amazing. Take care of your brother and family
[Chorus:]
The stairways up to la butte
Can make the wreched sigh
While windmill wings of the moulin
shelter you and I
[Original Song:]
[Chorus:]
The stairways up to la butte
Can make the wreched sigh
While windmill wings of the moulin
shelter you and I
[Original Song:]

you should post how to properly enunciate the french lyrics. I can sing it but afraid I'm not properly speaking the language :-)
Katherine McKinsey If I may ask, does La Butte mean anything?
Katherine McKinsey also, what does the title of this song mean? sorry to ask.

"One Man Guy" is another great Rufus performance.
I felt so cheated when the soundtrack gave us so little of this lovely song.
Quelle magnifique chanson!
The best songs always have an accordion playing in the background.
Rufus Wainwright ❤️ one of the best singers and composers in the world! So underestimated!
Is it sad that I don't know how to speak or understand French, yet I can sing this entire song word for word and nail it, accent and all?
+Sarah Black it's not really sad...it's a kind of nostalgie about love and Paris
I'm the same
pierrot6122 Oh how I'd love to go to Paris. To see the actual Moulin Rouge. Just to experience it, and the city this incredible movie was based on.
*dreams

This song can really do a number on me... and yet I always come back to it
Such a beautiful song. And Rufus does it justice! His voice is like a fine wine. Rufus is even better in a live performance than on a CD. An amazing performer.
This song is soooooooooo beautiful
Oh, this is so lovely. Rufus' voice is sublime. I never tire of hearing him sing. He is so talented and his voice is like a good, smooth glass of sherry.

Simply beautiful. The music and his voice blend together perfectly, like they are one in the same.
I would love the hit "like" on this 10 thousand times, but I can't :( lol

Oh! Victoria girl! Paris a bien changé, tu sais.
This song is one of my favorite. I'm french and thanks to this kind of song, now I can say that we have good music :D
