- The area around St James Palace in London has many ancient shops and in this splendid walk The whole area is rich with London history.
There's Lock and co. where they claim to have invented the bowler hat and Lobb where you can see the first Wellington boot.
Further along there is James Fox, where Winston Churchill shopped for over 50 years. You can even sit in his chair.
There are also many gentlemen's clubs and narrow 17th century passages leading to old stables and a club where Jimi Hendrix met his girlfriend, also frequented by the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
Joolz also visits the hat shop where they made the hats for Indiana Jones, James Bond, Dr Who and Downton Abbey.
There is also a visit to the Red Lion pub which has the second oldest licence in London.
All this and more in this splendid London walk.

Why this show is not picked up by the BBC or another large broadcaster is beyond me.
@@DonBean-ej4ou That's not true at all. Communism requires people to work for the community, not lock themselves in the basement with some fresh young boys. Who would bake the bread, if everyone spent all their time noncing kids?
I was thinking the same this morning. Interesting, funny and better than the rubbish that is churned out. I’d get in contact with the BBC if I were you.
@@ashscott6068 Hardly. In communism everyone works for the state, the people have no rights and no say in how things are run.
@@DonBean-ej4ou Eh? How is the BBC "Communist" when the director is the son of a wealthy banker, ex Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House and a Lord and when the BBC airs many shows such as The Apprentice, Dragon's Den, British historical dramas, various quaint old British antiques shows, Match of the Day, American Football...
You people are so deranged by overly right-wing politicians. Yea I find a lot of trash on the BBC, but that's just TV in general now because companies like Netflix and so on have taken over the market. If you don't want to pay the licence then just use a computer hooked to a large monitor and you can find FAR more good shows online than you can with a tv. Most tv channels now just stream their content via the internet anyway and often tv shows are rather poor quality as a result of low bandwidth. There's literally no reason to even own a tv anymore and in any case they don't even police it anymore really. I know tons of people with tvs who don't pay the BBC licence anymore and nothing has happened.
@@JeffDeWitt That's not what communism is. Communism is the political/economic theory of the populace owning property and the means of production. There has never been a Communist nation, only nations that have tried to attain it through Marxist-Leninist Socialism and/or State Capitalism (USSR, for example).
The cigar shop was insanely charming! thank you Joolz, have a good holiday!
Inagine having a chill day with your mates, just drinking some beer and suddenly a dapper 19th century man with a cane walks out of an archway rambling about old alleyways and duels

The immature teenager in me started giggling the moment Blue Ball Street was mentioned and then the backstory was explained to naive Joolz and I laughed out loud.
Ok, now the mature part of me wants to let you know that it was another great video and I look forward to your return from holiday and another video.
As a proud virgin those balls must be pretty blue!!
There is a town called Blue Ball in Ohio.

As a Londoner, that is indeed a real phrase that we use for a chap who has been led on and then refused...(that's the polite way of saying it...!)
When I left London for the last time, after 5 happy years there, I treated myself to a hat from Lockes. I loved the way I was fitted out, and thought of all the 18th Century gents that went in there, in their breeches to get their tricorne hats etc!!
Since you are "obsessed" with Colombo, I grew near Hollywood and was taken to be an extra on one of his shows.... I was about 13 years old. This was 30 years ago...! He was charming, wearing his raincoat, and said hi to all the cast.
Which episode???
@@Joolzguides Ah, you read the comments (: It must have been one of the special episodes in 1988 or 1989.
A lot of BRITS love COLUMBO including me 👍😬
I watch Columbo to this day. Great program.
That hat shop was surpringly fascinating! could do a whole video just with the interesting history of hats! who knew!
Very true. With shops like that it's appropriate to say " If only these walls could talk "
Did you catch the hat sizer gadget? He put it on for a second. You adjust all the knobs or whatever and it gives you the perfect shape and size for your hat to fit right.
The hat shop was pretty cool! I'm going to visit London next year, and I'd LOVE to get a nice authentic British made flat cap. Maybe I'll have to hunt down that store and pick one up!
I do enjoy a good haberdasher.
Nimbleful EVERYTHING is damn interesting if you look into it in depth. Seriously.
Wasn't expecting a Mary Whitehouse Experience reference in this video.
Loved your sister giggling when someone mentioned a Churchill being 7 inches.
She can't help herself. She wrote the song too.

This channel deserves an actual TV network getting behind it and making it into a series. I'm actually finding it more interesting and entertaining than a BBC David Attenborough production.

If I can't be in London, this is almost as much fun.
So many shops that have existed in the 1800s no longer exist. There was an upholsterer and cabinetmaker at 92 Jermyn street. His name was Richard Tait. He had royal patronage. My 3rd great grandfather worked for him. Floris is one of the shops of that era that has survived to this day. Alot of the 4 storey Georgian houses built in the 1700s have been demolished. Unfortunately we cannot go back in time but we can admire and learn from the past.
Same thing happened in dublin, a lot of the old Georgian houses, were allowed to fall into ruin and were pulled down, to be replaced with horrific steel and glass eyesores.
The oldest in London still exists. Ede and Ravenscroft made the Coronation robes for William III and Mary II in 1689 and are still robe makers to the peerage and lawyers. They are also general tailors making very good every day clothes. Also Twinings tea shop is still around, which opened in, I think, 1706.
@@roeng1368 Too true unfortunately. I believe that the centre was taken out of the longest stretch of 18th century houses in Europe. It's institutionalised vandalism. Hopefully it won't happen anymore.
You know Julian, only you could unlock these amazing insights you share with us. That cigar shop blew my mind, I have not smoked in about 8 years, and I was drooling for want of one! I just adored the quirkiness of the young shop keeper you spoke with. The hat shop was endless fascination, as was the proprietor with his gorgeous hair cut and neatly trimmed beard and mo, fancy them making all those "famous" movie hats, amazing! I think you mentioned you are going on holiday, so have a good holiday, and please come back soon and make more of your WONDERFUL videos!
Joolz this one was special. Great song, great singing by you, great Mick Jagger dancing and great stores and their managers ! Thanks
Joolz, please get yourself a quality bowler hat. You deserve it!
they should do episode of Joolz getting fitted and styled. any shop. any hat. shoes. undies (crossed fingers). can't wait:)
So fun! I love it when you film with Lou, you are so much more yourself and at ease. And she added the perfect amount of naughty spiciness 😉 to the mix. Thanks for taking the time to post from Serbia & safe travels back.

Did you hear it? Our uproarious laughter from across the pond during your Churchillian take whilst seated in his chair. Masterful. And we were left wanting more of sis's salty songs and her wink-wink, nudge-nudge randy humor. We like.
No idea how I’ve missed your channel before now. Well now I’ve found you, I’ll say goodbye to my true life for a few months while I binge watch.
Hi Joolz. I just wanted to say thanks for these wonderful videos. I left England 63 years ago for Canada and your videos bring back some great memories of my old home. I lived in Peckham when I was a little boy, and all your great places to visit I went to with my dad as a youngster. Anyway, keep up the great videos and thanks again for bring back some fabulous memories for me.

These shops are museums of their specialties. Fascinating. Thank you.

The fellows in the cigar shop were terrific sports--and how fascinating! And the hat shop--who knew there were so many subtleties!
You and your videos are the best on the planet. Golly, but I do love listening to you and learning so much.
Thank you, Joolzy ....
Always makes me smile watching these walks thank you.
The White Hart pub has stood proudly on the corner of Drury Lane and High Holborn for centuries. The Old Bailey archives reveal this corner to be the first and oldest licensed premise in London, dating back to 1216.
Oh yes.. If only it still looked a bit more characterful. You wouldn't know it to look at it
Oh wow! The oldest! I just left London yesterday after staying right on the corner of High Holborn and Drury Lane. Wish I had seen your comment sooner, would have popped in. Always next trip!
As soon as the virus is gone, i’m going to London! Love this.
I wish I could . Unfortunately I have a service dog and the vet exams alone are the price of an evening out in the west end theater , and dinner with wine . not to mention there is a 5 day quarantine for ALL dogs coming into England no exceptions . so , looks like I'm screwed as far as travel .
That was just brilliant! I love London and it’s history!

Myself and the missus have watched shed loads of your tours around London in the last 4 8 hours. Excellent, enjoyable and educational. BRAVO!!
Tremendous. I worked for 10 years in the building across the road from Berry Bros & Rudd, you picked a great day for the video, brings back a lot of fond memories. Couple of things in that area if you ever choose to revisit; 78 St James's St, the old head of the conservative party (unbelievable interiors, the dome in the centre is spectacular), one street up, the final place Chopin stayed before his last public appearance; he was employed by the Rothschild's as their Paris-based paino entertainer in their upscale club (I forget the name, it was near the Champs Elysees) and further down on that street to this day is the headquarters of the Rothschild family office. Finally, Chequers pub, mason's yard.....well, I'm sure you know the connection and for anyone that doesn't, Sam Williamson covers it in his wanders round St James's. Thanks Julian, that was great!.
This is FANTASTIC ! Amazing London. I have to see this shops . Thank you ! 👏👏👏
I feel as though I am on a London walking tour , and you are just beside me telling all your fantastic stories .
Love this one, thanks Joolz! Could you make a video about the canals and narrow boats systems of London? It's a world of it's own tucked away, would be interested to find out more, just an idea, thanks!
Your films about London are splendid. I like to watch them over and over again. London is truly the capitol of Europe!
Well I must say what an expertly put together informative video.Very interesting.I live in Newcastle and the last time I visited London was 1992 and I loved it.Watching these videos makes me want to go back. There's history round every corner..although Newcastle's not too bad for that as well
Keep the videos coming jools and thanks.
Absolutely wonderful video, Fascinating and jolly! And your sisters' music is brilliant, what a charming combination! Superb.
Back in the late 80s there used to be a restaurant at 57 Jermyn Street called - imaginatively - 'The 57'. When I was a pianist doing those sorts of gigs I had a stint at The 57 and it didn't matter so much what I played, as long as I played extremely quietly. Most boring three hours of my life. Definitely not boring was on the way to this gig one night I was on the Piccadilly Line, passing through Kings X on the night of the fire. There was smoke in the tunnel and a lot of stopping and starting but we got through. It wasn't until I was at the gig that I found out what had happened....
I actually admire the way you edit your videos.
First time I've ever seen any of your videos. You just made me fall in love with London and her history again.
