- Tour of London's Mayfair with Julian McDonnell from Joolz Guides.
Claridges in Brook Street was founded by a butler in 1855.
Then in 1860 Victorian and Albert were hosted by Empress Eugenie of France.
During World War II many of Europe’s royal families were in exile, one of whom was King Peter of Yugoslavia who fathered his son prince Alexander in suite 212.
Churchilll declared the room to be part of Yugoslavia for one day and Yugoslavian earth was placed under the bed so he could be born on Yugoslav soil.
Then Churchill discovered he hadn’t been re-elected and came to Claridges to commiserate.
Gordon Ramsey used to run the restaurant but no longer since losing his Michelin star.
Brook Street is also home to the Handel Hendrix museum.
The word brook refers to the Tyburn river which used to run here.
Savile Row is where the Tuxedo was invented by Henry Poole when
James Potter of Tuxedo Park NY was invited by the prince of Wales to sandringham. He wanted the same suit as the prince.
In 1969 The Beatles performed their last ever gig on the roof of Apple Studios at No.3 Savile Row but the police closed it down after 40 minutes.
Burlington Arcade
1819 - Lord Cavendish inherited Burlington house and built this covered arcade to stop people throwing things into his garden.
He recruited beadles from his old regiment the 10th Hussars so his wife and friends could shop unmolested. These beadles are now the oldest police force in the world.
No running, whistling or opening umbrellas.
The Punch Bowl - 2008 It was bought by Guy Ritchie and Madonna for 2.5 million off the son of a gangster.
Ritchie retained Madonna’s share after they divorced.
Famous patrons include David Beckham, Princes William and Harry, Leonardo di Caprio, Robert Downey and Justin Timberlake.
It was investigated for charging tourists more than locals but cleared.
Ritchie sold it in 2013.

Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films would you do a video about banksy art? I love banksy! I’m going to London in April and would love to know where to look
You are already a star
Oh, boy I'd love to go on pub crawl with you, lol🍻🍺🍺🍸🥃🍷🍹🍾
I'm rather charmed by all the helpful, outgoing people working in these very exclusive shops--they're lovely!
Always thought of Burlington Arcade as Piccadilly. Never knew Mayfair extended that far. You learn something everyday!
Same here. It must be on the borderline. I was there in May
@@gmar7836 I lived and worked in London for many years.
I stayed there in that hotel, and Madonna was in the room above. And Prince Andrew walked in with security, and Donatella Versace. Also Steven Spielberg was staying there. Very expensive. I had a butler. Mind blowing experience. Once in a life time, I would say ! Unless you win the lottery...
👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍👍👍💖💖💖
Joolz, I'm so fortunate to have bump into your RUclips channel !
I've been to London 5 times and I seriously doubt I'll ever be able to go back again. Your videos have brought amazing memories of my days in the British capital so I can't find the words to thank you enough, they've made me feel as if I were there myself...
Your Videos are both informative and entertaining,. I'm fully aware they mean hard work but please, keep them coming. Congratulations to you and to the cameraman !!!
Kindest regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina
My dad was Dame Barbara Cartlands chauffeur and went to Claridges every week with Dame Barbara. RIP Dad and Dame Barbara.
Every Wednesday I think. I remember seeing her there several times. I also saw her at Hardy Amies when she and my mother were there at the same time. The white Silver Cloud numbered BC29 if I remember?
Whilst in C virus lockdown it is great to see these videos going through London, thank you for doing them
I love the way this dude will come across something on route and then spit out a random historical fact about it, whether its pre planned I don't know but its bloody brilliant!
I discovered that I have ancestors who lived at number 70 and 69 South Audley Street in the 1800s. They were tradesmen living in a four storey Georgian house. Their shop on the same premises was called Archard's jewellery shop and it was located right across the street opposite Goode's China Shop. The present number 70 at the corner of South Street is not the one in the 1800s. The present building was built about 1899. Before that the Archards lived at 21 Robert Street near Grosvenor Square - Robert Street in Mayfair no longer exists. Many retail businesses have come and gone in mayfair - Archard's was one of many that few people know about. Mr Archard also worked for Alexander Purvis a clockmaker who lived in North Audley Street. My maternal grandmother's maiden name is Archard - that's where I get the ancestors.
What an amazing bit of family history for you. They must have lived comfortably I reckon.
I can't think of any other video about cities that could be better. I feel like I am walking with you knowing so many interesting facts about the streets of London. This time it touched me deeply because I used to walk in May Fair a lot when I spent a time in London a long time ago. And Bond Street always make me remember of the song Bond Street by David/Bacharah. Thank you so much for these videos.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING US ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL 🎈🤗🌏
This is always so funny and interesting ... well done !
Again, another entertaining video of modern London with historical perspective for additional interest! Thanks Julian!
Thanks. Yes, try to mix it up a bit.
The only channel where I hit the like button before the video begins. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing even more!
Thanks AJ. I better not make a bad one to catch you out then!
Brilliant and thank you for the tour...............
Did yo know Mayfair got its name in 1686 when King James II granted royal permission for a fair to be held on the site of what is now Shepherds Market in the first two weeks of May. At this time Soho, Whitehall, and the City were the addresses of choice for the wealthy
Beau Brummel and The Prince Regent did not get on. At a party or event The Prince Regent spoke to a person on Brummel's right, then to him left, ignoring Brummel. Brummel's revenge came a few minutes later when 'Priny' (The Prince's nickname.) was speaking to one of Brummel's friends. Brummel addressed his mate, saying: "Who's your fat friend?"
They used to be close friends.
I used to work at the Mayfair Hotel in 1990/91 when living in London.
Nice one sham!
You walked passed my old office 28 Grosvenor St for about 20 years after I moved from Blanford House. Sigh! I'm homesick.
How about making a video on the chocolate shops of London?
Maia Allman yes, Charbonnel et Walker
I can help with that one 😋
@@paulgabolinscy2502 Rose & violet cremes are the best. 👍
Great idea - Prestats!
HEY GUYS THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING US 🤗💫🌎
Another top notch video Jules. I believe it was Spencer Tracy who said, ‘when I die I don’t want to go to heaven, I want to go to Claridges.’ I loved the BBC series about the hotel.
Nice! Dammit, I should have put that in the video! Where woz yer when I needed ya!!
Thanks :)
It was Spencer Tracy. Also a little boy said that it was the hardest place he had ever had to leave. When I was a child our London house was in Hill Street, and if we had to be in London on Sunday it was always lunch at Claridge's. The dish of the day back then was always chicken pie on Sunday. I think it was oxtail on Thursday, which my father always enjoyed there.
Great shot of my favorite Aspinal of London. Ladies who love handbags know that shop.
I've done my own little YT videos of London recently but yours is miles better and a totally different but engaging manner ! I love your style in front of the camera. I admire the amount of research you have undertaken for your videos to have them packed with interesting background information. Very impressed! Thanks for sharing and best of luck recruiting visitors.
Thanks Terry. Yes, it's hard making videos in London. People get in the way, shout, try to put you off and make stupid remarks. Then there's all the ugly rubbish trucks in the way and white vans and scaffolding. They take a long time but it's good to know you like them!
Your video guides of the smoke are just too good to miss Joolz, so I have just subscribed mate!
Claridge's was founded as Mivart's in 1812 and bought by Mr and Mrs Claridge, who owned the hotel next door. Mr Claridge was known for varying the depth of his bow, depending on whether a guest was Imperial, Royal or Serene highness.
My Dad was Dame Barbara Cartland's Chauffeur and spent lots of time at Claridges.
WE LOVE LONDON ALWAYS 🎈💖🌺
I’m actually going round all these spots right now, love your upbeat pleasant style of presenting thanks for the video
Great guides. Thank you
The Cravatte/Cravat is originally from the Croat culture so I doubt it was Beau Brummell. If anything he just revamped the style to one of his own liking.
Really, Really - two for emphasis of course :)- enjoying your Tours. I am planning my first trip outside the United States this September. Going to explore England, Ireland and Scotland. Spending several days in London. Your tours are exceptionally informative in a fun, entertaining way. I like the way you have successfully made the viewer a participant. I am hoping some places will seem a little bit familiar, just because I "walked" through them with you. Has made me even more excited about the trip. Thanks !
Thanks Sterrin! I'm glad you could enjoy in through my camera lens!
I love your humor! Brightens my day!
Another brilliant tour. 👍
Great as always. ❤😊
"It's my Mom's favorite chocolate shop..." With such an excellent gambit, I felt that your luck (freebies) was guaranteed.
Thank you for the most amazing content I love how you explain more about England it opens my eyes more when somebody explains more about England thank you so much for your amazing content I hope you will keep putting videos up for us to enjoy and I already subscribed and put likes on your videos thank you again you are one of the best and I hope we can be friends someday
I like that there was a brief shot of Gieves & Hawkes on Saville Row
I’m London born. Fun educational video in mayfair area thanks x
Hey joolz wanted to let you know that me and my girlfriend binge watch your videos and loved the ones about Hampstead and Camden. I drop a like on every one of.your videos. You're a cool dude.
Thanks Joe. That's very kind. Yes, I've been getting a few likes lately. I've also noticed I systematically get one dislike for every video. I'm curious to know who it is! I'm sure it must be the same person each time!
Harry Winston was a good friend of possibly the greatest private trader, Jessie Livermore (Reminiscences Of A Stock Operator). He gave his wife a large fortune in jewels and whenever he had a bad run he would give the jewels back to Harry Winston and he would stake him to start up again. When he hit it big (which he mostly did) he would buy the jewels back. Amazing.
Jooze you make my day! I love your vlogs. USA
I like your tour’s about London plus your videos.😊♥️
My first time to see this video, fantastic, love this.Mayfair is one of my favourite place in London.
Was there in late May. I walked on those very streets. I really liked the Burlington arcade
How charming, dear boy. Bless you.
Good to see you're getting subscribers increased. Hope for you to reach million soon.. God bless...
Thanks. Yes, it's hard work. It seems that if you upload every week it increases but that's a tough ask!
I recently found your channel and I can’t stop watching. I love the history of England and hope to travel there one day. Keep up the good work.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING 🌎🔥
Thanks for posting, most enjoyable.
Cheers Davy. There are lots more which are better than this one in my opinion. Thanks for watching! I'm glad it's proving popular.
Great fun video thanks so much for taking the time to upload this amazing video
Thanks James. Yes, I have a lot of similar ones. Don't forget to have a look and do subscribe for more! It's free!
I didn't realise I've traveled thru Mayfair till I watched this video,,,,, ha ha... I just walked everywhere went I visited London several times
It's the sort of place I often travel through but never really need to go there specifically.
Yet another great video!
splendid
Only just discovered this channel but its great, fun, informative and really really interesting
Thanks Leo. Yes, there are many videos on there. Have a look through. More to come hopefully!
Wonderful covered arcades! I must visit this Christmas, as their festive decorations are very attractive!
Well, that was a surprise. The sculpture of Churchill and FDR was part of the sculpture exhibition in the gardens of Chatsworth House four or five years ago.
Ah ha! There it was....the "Allies bench of Mr R. and Mr. C". When last I was in your fair city it had been temporarily removed in the midst of some road and construction work. Yet another great video. I must seek out that bench, and that chocolate shop when I soon visit once again! Thanks Joolz!
Ye, at least they put it back....which is more than can be said for the John Snow cholera pump in soho!
WHAT? That pump was a little jewel of historic interest and gave a meaninful back story to the local! Crazy!
Handel played the organ at our local church St Lawrence's, Little Stanmore (near Canons Park).
I really enjoy your videos thanks
Thanks. That's very kind. I am very grateful too as I just reached 10000 subscribers!
Loved the video. I loved your comments.
Thank you!
Fantastic Video of Mayfair! 👍😀
Thanks Anton....again! You are a good man.
You forgot that Beau Brummel created the "stove pipe trousers". Otherwise we might still be wearing knee length breeches and stockings! :-)
Very cool talk as you walk. There’s nothing the man doesn’t know about London, and maybe other things as well.
Oh yes..but a memory like a sieve. Luckily I have these videos now to remind myself!
Very good video. I not missing anything I want see. Thank you so much for upload video🤗
Thanks for the interesting tour, Joolz. Cheers from NEW Westminster, B.C., Canada
Love this
We had a tour with you
Next time
I love Mayfair. Champagne cocktail please!
your videos are amazing
Thank you. Yes, they're pretty hard work but I'm glad you enjoy them. It makes it worthwhile 🙂
I love London, I feel myself as a Londoner I know London much better than my own town, lol.
You are an honorary Londoner!
I love the very, very interesting information. You give, thank you so much, I’m learning a lot!
Brilliant videos. Thank you
I've several of your vids and they are the best i've seen makes me want to come to good old London town looks like a wonderful city
7:30 the cravate or necktie was "invented" by Croat light cavalry military units in 1616... the statue is known as the Dandy, symbol of dandyism in Great Britain, although dandyism had its origins in the USA around 1777...
thats true, thats why its named cravate...Croat soldiers wear them first, i think they fought for napolen in that time..Their wives would tie like a scarf around their necks when they went to battle, french saw that, they liked it as a fashion detail so probably it came to England from France
Enjoy watched this film . A lot of interesting stuff. Thanks
Thanks. More next week I reckon. It's hard to squeeze everything in!
Hi Jules - can you do a London town pub crawl as i would like to join you
Watching this (again) I was reminded that my Panamanian wife thought the sculptured figures on the bench were Laurel & Hardy! I put her right and we subsequently visited the excellent fan-run museum in an old cinema in Laurels hometown of Ulverston, so she wouldn't make the same mistake! As usual, loved the video (again)!!
Great video. Maybe have a video showing where people go for lunch in London?
Yes, good idea. It's hard filming inside places though. People are so suspicious and especially with the hat they think I'm from the BBC. I wish!
There are so many places to eat too. it's quite an undertaking but I'd like to do it.
def subscribing! good work!
Iv got the same rug that’s in Jimmy’s room ,this makes me so happy ,,,, it’s the rug in front of the fire

Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films .. I'm leaving tomorrow to London 😊
I think you were born to do this, Julian. You do it very well indeed! ie showing London off to great advantage.
Thank you.
No Problem. I don't think this is even my best film but it's proving very popular!
A other great video but would have been nice if you have mention the gentlemen clubs in Mayfair
Yes, I do walk past one in the next video and I also make mention of them in my video about Pall Mall. As there's a lot to squeeze in I try not to repeat too much. The good thing is there's always room in a future video I suppose.
Jolly Good show!
Thanks!
Another great video
Cheers Dean. Another coming soon nearby.
Great! Thanks!
Glad I could be of service!
I like when they paint the fronts shiny black
