Liz Phair is a genius I mean jeezus her lyrics and melodies are so righteous! Fuck everyone who disregards her because she turned into a pop star - she's still a goddess.
i feel sorry for ppl who can't enjoy music unless a singer has perfect pitch control all the time. you'd miss out on a lot of the best rock music out there
THIS. I couldn't have said it better. I first started listening to Liz when I was 14 (7 years ago) and I just feel in love with her voice. The only way I ever found out about her was because of "Why Can't I". It was a terrible, catchy dorky pop song, but her voice was awesome! Then I bought Exile...and I was just like WTF this is waaay better. Then, I bought Whip-smart and I was like WTFF this is good shit! lol So yeah, I love Liz.
So..Mandy Moore couldn’t break the Cinderella moulde and Liz phair just has men to hate because she has to copy someone who has creative bent ...and that contrasts with musical originality and other than mal intent: what we get from Ryan Adams , their whipping post

Just wanted to add...a lot of people say Liz is a sellout and they couldn't be more wrong about that. 1) Real artists aren't afraid to try new things. 2) If it wasn't for "Why Can't I", then I STILL wouldn't know who the fuck she is. Nor would I be able to call Whip-Smart one of the greatest albums ever written.
But the opposite is what's wrong with American "entertainment". I'd much rather listen to low-fi shit like Liz Phair than over produced live shows that just "use" music as a vehicle for the spectacle. I want to hear PEOPLE that look and sound like friends, not production companies.
I also recorded this on VHS when it originally aired on 120mins. I think '94 was when the whole "alternative rock" thing really peaked. Record companies were willing to take chances. Anyway, loved this performance, including the vocals.
I like Liz's music but I feel like after this the songs courted fame in a way that ended up taking away from the rawness in Exile, which was a strength. It is a shame because that authenticity was really universal and soulful .
Than God you're not (marketable) to the mainstream music industry ( only because they can't buy you. I'm a songwriter singer too. and have loved you for more than 20 years, can't believe it's been that long!!! A song is suppose to evoke an emotion or feeling, A great record does the same thing. I wont buy a record for a single most times I buy it in spite of the single...My point is I think each one of your song is like one of your kids and each record you leave a piece of your soul in it!
@Soul74 yet, what i'm surprised you don't realize, is that both of the aforemetioned artists (and many others in the same, and similar genres) purposely made their voices sound that way to fit the very music they were playing. it's that "freedom of expression" aspect that lends itself to the mere creation of musical genres. and even if this weren't true, who the fuck cares? there're are about 5.3658 jillion bands/musicians out there. they are what they are.
You know.. I really want to like your stuff, I gotta tell ya. I'm a 65 year old unsuccessful rock musician turned IT guy.... And I love you Liz. You turn me on, of course.... but I think Avalanche is the really great song you've done. And it is a GREAT song. But all the Fuck and Run and run shit, well... that's our lives man.... Anyway - Who am I to blow to blow against the wind?
That's ridiculous. His tone and pitch are excellent, it's only a question of mixing and volume and balance. She's a remarkable songwriter but HER voice isn't as clear and accurate as his, which makes it hard to blend with her.
Your comment forced me to listen again. I think my comment was a little flippant....it is the internet after all. I agree, she isn't a vocal virtuoso....but I like her voice and the way she sings. I'm a fan of Bernard Sumner's voice too. So what do I know? The drummers vocals are too up in the mix. You're right-on his own he is ok. Would I rather hear him or Liz? I'll take Liz. As they say, there is no accounting for taste.
sashaisme What a cool comment. I would DEFINITELY take Liz, too. I love the sound of her voice and she's a genius. The older I get I'm much less snobby about vocal tone and stuff; and I really appreciate the emotion and individuality behind a person singing who's not a "singer".
I have yet to hear a live performance by Phair that was even close to passable. She came in through the "anybody can do it" door opened by Kurt Cobain.
But, I guess you have a point, when you compare her to the Stones or the Who, or many many bands that make you feel so alive and connected when you hear them live. So, I apologize... I didn't mean to contradict you. :)
There is a difference between being "over produced" and not being a compelling live performer. Live shows are a combination of quality music (which, you are right, is often diminished by too much production polish) and personal qualities that make people interested in you. If you have enough musical quality, charisma issues matter less. To me, Liz Phair's music was never as good as was claimed, even on Guyville, and she couldn't do the star thing either. Lo-fi is fine, if it is interesting.
This is interesting. Maybe this is part of why I've never really cared about live music or performances. I just want to hear the music. Compare LizPhair with At Power during this time- poor Cat Power seemed to have all these anxiety issues and play with her hair over her face. Though cat Power was on another level sonically, though they both played simple songs.
Yeah, like, that's your opinion man and you know what they say about opinions and....Guyville was the number one record of 1993 in both the Pazz & Jop Poll and Christgau's Dean's List but I guess you know better 🤣😂🤣
I think the drummer sorta stole the spotlight. his mic was also WAY too loud, and you could hear him better than Liz Phair. He should really stick to doing his job - drumming. That WAS what he was hired for. RIGHT??
It's not his fault they put his mic levels up to high. He's also there to provide backing vocals, which are necessary for the song. Otherwise he wouldn't have been given a mic.
He's singing exactly the notes he sings on the album, and he hits those notes perfectly. His mic was mixed a little too high for some people here, not for me though. I can't believe how many comments there are about it.
I think she is a better songwriter than performer. Some strong material. Most musicians' careers have tanked as the Internet decimated the industry - the people still around are the ones willing to tour constantly.
It's totally within your power not to listen. Actually you should do that. Move on to some other music that you can enjoy. Liz has plenty of fans who actually love her and some waste their time commenting on stuff they hate. It's not for you.
Liz Phair is a genius I mean jeezus her lyrics and melodies are so righteous! Fuck everyone who disregards her because she turned into a pop star - she's still a goddess.
Love this song. The vocal sounds like auto tune misfiring in a cool way. She was WAY ahead of her time. ❤️❤️❤️
Still is
Awesome seeing you here
i feel sorry for ppl who can't enjoy music unless a singer has perfect pitch control all the time. you'd miss out on a lot of the best rock music out there
I love this song
Shes such a great guitar player, her style on "guyville" and the Girlysound tapes is really cool. Thanks for posting this piece of music history!
Vintage Liz...This is soooo cool. Thanks for posting.
I love you liz and your music, you have a tremendous amount of talent with a lot hook and magic in your songs.
This is the golden era of LP, the new stuff is terrible. But the first 3 albums I loooooved.
" Music gives pleasure .. And virtue to enjoy, love and hate righteously "
I fucking love this song so much.
man i heard these last time i was 16 brings great memorys back
20 years and its still as good as the first time i heard it.
THIS.

So yeah, I love Liz.
love this track. classic record.
brad wood. the understated genius of that era.
The producer of the album if I remember correctly.
He's from my hometown of Rockford, Illinois.
her melodies are so cool i wanna listen to her talk on the phone cuz you know she talks like this
Man I guess I'm the only weirdo who likes the harmonizing
Ayana J can you hear the copy, instrument and harmony ?
So..Mandy Moore couldn’t break the Cinderella moulde and Liz phair just has men to hate because she has to copy someone who has creative bent

Exile in Guyville: the most played cassette/Cd in my record collection.
I love this. Liz can play those barre chords like it is nobody's business.
U are loved...
LEGEND!!!!
@lissak27 I'm a huge death metal fan but I LOVE Liz!!! Ever since I was 16 (I'm 32)
But the opposite is what's wrong with American "entertainment". I'd much rather listen to low-fi shit like Liz Phair than over produced live shows that just "use" music as a vehicle for the spectacle.

IT's amazing that she looks/sounds just the same now as back then ;)
I love this song but the drummer's mic is too loud. Other than that it's great!
I also recorded this on VHS when it originally aired on 120mins. I think '94 was when the whole "alternative rock" thing really peaked. Record companies were willing to take chances. Anyway, loved this performance, including the vocals.
The backing vocal did make me laugh. Thanks for posting this.
I like it a lot
Every time that I drop by to watch this... I wish that his mic would have just gone dead.
thE DRUMMER
I like Liz's music but I feel like after this the songs courted fame in a way that ended up taking away from the rawness in Exile, which was a strength. It is a shame because that authenticity was really universal and soulful .
Argh. That dude's harmony did not do it for me all the way. Other than that, pure gold.
that guitar looks soo huge in her hands :))
When music is all about talent
@Soul74 hey, thanks!!! although, i don't see what luck has to do with thinking the way i want....that kind of just happens on its own, you see.
Is this on Jon Stewart's talk show from the 90s?
@panzercam He's probably just the best background vocalist of the three guys playing with her. The song has background vocals.
temón
And that was only the beginning, things evened out by the end.
Live not so good but Exile in Guyville is one of the great rock albums.
😂😂😂 can’t stop laughing at how loud he is...I wonder if they realized while they were performing
Yeah, but so does Liz. It's part of the charm of her music.
Than God you're not (marketable) to the mainstream music industry ( only because they can't buy you. The 3 acoustics not working. Love her, love EiG

Drummer needs to stick to drumming. I guess at least he is trying. Thanks for the upload!
That's ridiculous. His tone and pitch are excellent, it's only a question of mixing and volume and balance. She's a remarkable songwriter but HER voice isn't as clear and accurate as his, which makes it hard to blend with her.

:-) I definitely agree.
123 pick up
@wirsindhelden0 You're free to think what you want. Good luck with that.
@horcica22 Now try not to picture what else would be enormous in her hands.
and don't forget Placebo's first album =]
I have yet to hear a live performance by Phair that was even close to passable. She came in through the "anybody can do it" door opened by Kurt Cobain.
thanks - I just did.
I think he's good.... really.
I don't think Brad's bad at singing, his vocals are just too loud in this mix. Mic problems, maybe?
i love you, beautiful, brave, magic grrrl :-)
Yeah...the drummer's mic needs to be dialed down a few notches.
But, I guess you have a point, when you compare her to the Stones or the Who, or many many bands that make you feel so alive and connected when you hear them live.
So, I apologize... I didn't mean to contradict you. :)
@horcica22 It's not the size of the guitar, it's the way you use it Lol
His mic is too loud, that's all.
Man I'd like to smack whoever did the mixing on this the drummer is overiding Liz big time Liz actually was doing a good job rocking it out
Instead of 5 to
@madeyes4u Very.
@RLW1967
no, but she should
Better than being disquired for being 10'0' instead of 5'11"
You are high.
that guy ruins it cuz she's amazing by herself
A little late at :05
the drummer needs to have a big cup of "shut the fuck up"
or at least tone it down a little.
Ditto... could've done without the backup vocals
I heard she was good, maybe not so much......
How can you be rated better than the Beatles is beyond any professionals opinion

She was unique and really fun live when I saw her. Looking forward to new tour.
Yeah, like, that's your opinion man and you know what they say about opinions and....Guyville was the number one record of 1993 in both the Pazz & Jop Poll and Christgau's Dean's List but I guess you know better 🤣😂🤣
that guy is often out of tune and too loud
totally agree, he should get hes ass kicked:P
I think the drummer sorta stole the spotlight. his mic was also WAY too loud, and you could hear him

That drummer sounds awful :P ruining liz's voice!
I hope they fired the drummer after that one
Ewwwwwwww!!!!!!
nothing that special; no surprise her career tanked.
seems like a weird comment with ulterior motives
I think she is a better songwriter than performer. Some strong material. Most musicians' careers have tanked as the Internet decimated the industry - the people still around are the ones willing to tour constantly.
That drummer is so bad hahaha. Great song though.
Wth is this crap music?
It's totally within your power not to listen. Actually you should do that. Move on to some other music that you can enjoy. Liz has plenty of fans who actually love her and some waste their time commenting on stuff they hate. It's not for you.
I'm very interested in your esteemed judgement 🤣😂🤣
@madeyes4u I've got something that's 6' 1" that she could use.
