Fascinating flower indeed! Ironically, while you were curious about the aunties taking photos of the flowers, your flower photography attracted the curiosity of the uncles. LOL
Yes, kapok can be used to make soup or tea. In traditional Chinese medicine, it can clear away heat and treat dysentery. You can learn about five flowers tea in Chinese.
There were many wood cotton trees along the way to my elementary school. One day, I saw one of my classmates collecting them and asked him why. He told me his mom had asked him to do it because she had a very serious disease and said she depended on these flowers for her health. I was shocked and felt so sorry for him, but as I grew up, I realized how my classmate had been fooled by his loving mom and every time I see this kind of tree, it just reminds me of a little boy under the tree worrying his mom😂
The tree is call Wood Cotton, because the fruit it produces is covered by cotton like fiber to help the spreading by wind. This "cotton" was once collected to be used as stuffing material and used to make things like pillows or quilt. The seeds can be used to extract oil. The tree has a lot of other names. One is called Red Cotton or "紅棉". There is a song call "紅棉" sung by Hong Kong singer Roman Tam. In the song the tree is also called "Hero tree" or 英雄樹 as you have mentioned in your video. There are also many poems (some dating back some 1200 years) on the tree/flower. The flower is the "City Flower" for Guangzhou City and Kaohsiung City, also the County flower of Taichung County of Taiwan.
I found this useful video on the various ways to use the flower in sweet (teas, desserts) or savoury dishes (soups, stirfry) Bombax Ceiba Recipes | 撿些木棉花回家,做成祛濕解熱的老火靚湯!| Summer Kitchen•夏廚陳二十【316】 m.ruclips.net/video/7hXHlc2JrMQ/видео.html
I was visiting my in-laws in Shenzhen this past March. I saw many Mumian flowers fall on the ground. My mother in-law said people cook soup with this kind of flowers. But I never had chance to try them. It was very brave that you tried to cook with them. BTW, I came from your little red book channel. Good job, and please keep shooting more interesting videos.
There are a lot of them! Now they are all spreading cotton like clumps everywhere. I was out today and noticed the fluffy blobs floating in the air. Thanks for your kind words. I have some fun videos coming!
@@cinematicsomething When i was a kid, we used to collect its cotton, our parents will help to clean & dry the cotton and make pillow with it. So much fun.
Noooo you still didn't get the full picture. The those 'wood cotton flowers' are supposed to be used for soups, those cantonese style simmering for hours type of soups.
Great video! very interesting perspective and approach, almost like a philosophy of life~ do you also have a channel on Bilibili? What’s the ID? I want to follow you on Bilibili~
Aren't kapok supposed to make cotton after flowers? I remember kapok trees on a square in Madeira, letting out their cotton, very enjoyable sight, almost like snow, but what a mess too!
This flower is the city flower of Guangzhou, the logo of the government and the logo of China Souther Airline (their HQ is in Guangzhou) is this flower. Your video is insteresting, all the small details in life!
Yes! All true. I noticed the flower logo on the China Southern airplanes and found out it was the official flower of Guangzhou while doing research for this episode. Just another reminder of how important the flower is to the region.
This flower are good for digestion, joint pain, improve skin conditions, only leaves part to boil in water and drink , hay fever person is not suggested.
Gosh, let's see. I don't focus on the gear too much but depending on the shoot I bring lots of stuff. Check out my Wuzhen video to see the travel camera stand I use (LINK: ruclips.net/video/Wde_zB3Avo4/видео.html). Lighting was nothing special, just a little daylight balanced LED panel with diffusion. Macro was a little turntable I have to get the movement and then I used the lens flip trick for the extreme close-ups (Google "macro lens flip trick"). Perhaps I'll do some shorts in the future showing a few of the hacks I use.
Nice video and you spent a lot of effort on getting the various shots. I think if you want to find out what is a good way to cook something, ask a friendly aunty. Another way is to ask any traditional chinese medicine hall. They would probably tell you whether it can be used as a tea or in soups, plus what it is good for.
Thanks for the tip and for watching! I would love to become an auntie's culinary student but it didn't work out for this video. Hopefully in the future. I love those medicine halls as well.
@@cinematicsomething Most traditional medicine is bitter. I think a good way to ease yourself in is to just get some teas e.g. chrysanthenum and rock sugar (maybe add some goji berries too).
It is a kind of ingredient in local medicine or herbal tea, particular found in Guangdong province. Go to consult a Chinese traditional doctor for details.
Kapok is a traditional Chinese medicine that can remove moisture from the body.It is not recommended to take it by yourself. You need to consult a doctor. After all, this is a medicinal material.
I'm still alive! I was a little worried after seeing your comment but it's been a month. My body moisture levels are back to normal. Thanks for your concern.

It's funny the way that works. 😂

This video was really interesting, quick question, do chinese people use this flower for making tea? sometime i see flowers in the tea jar
They sure do! Five flower tea I believe is the most common but there are others too. Do a search for Kapok tea and you'll get some results.
@@cinematicsomething thank you, I will check that out

I'd love that! It's an idea I've been thinking about for some time. I'm trying to figure out the best way to do it.

Another tidbit of auntie wisdom in action! 😂
Oh wow, I just became a hero 😂😂😂

Nice
In order to know about the flower, you must act like aunties. ..... You make me laugh!
