- Op-Amp Big Muff Vintage vs Reissue
In this video I am comparing my Op-Amp Big Muff Reissue with a 1978 V4 Op-Amp Big Muff. This is the version of the Muff that was used by Billy Corgan on a lot of early Smashing Pumpkins recordings. I am using my Boss LS-2 Line Selector pedal to switch back and forth between the two Units. The guitars used in the Video in the order of appearance are:
- Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar
- 1992 Gibson LesPaul Standard
- 2017 Fender American Professional Stratocaster
- 1995 Fender Made in Japan Jazzmaster
The Amp I am playing through a Marshall 2525C Mini Silver Jubilee Combo.

00:31 Pedalboard Rundown
02:36 Johnny Marr Jaguar
03:27 Gibson Les Paul Standard
04:21 Fender American Professional Stratocaster
05:49 Conclusion
06:30 Fender Made in Japan Jazzmaster
Now that's how pedal comparison should looks! Smooth and seamless transition between pedals, some demo in mix, nice guitars and final conclusion.
Hi blam07, thank you very much!
Perfect !!! thanks for your video .. Just what I was looking for
Absolutely fantastic video! Helped push me into picking up an old V4….thank you and keep up the phenomenal work
Hi Will, thank you so much and hope you can get a good deal on an old V4!
The LS-2 is a buffered pedal. A true bypass switcher is recommended to take any additional buffers that can affect the sound and feel. The sound and feel might vary a little more without the LS-2. With that said, there are variations between different units. I have 4 different. versions. The reissue, the V5, and 2x V4's (both with different circuit boards). They all sound similar, but my V5 sounds notably worse than the other two. The two V4's have to be set to different positions on the tone control to sound asl close as possible. Still, one sounds more smooth and the other more abrasive, but both sound good and better in most cases than the V5 or the reissue. I never use the V5, but sometimes use the reissue for different tones or depending on the amp... But in general, the two V4's rule the roost.
Great video! I subscribed!!
Hi Alex, thank you very much!
So much more tone, presence, and feel with the V4/V5
Well done
Hi Carl, thank you very much!
How do you provide power to the '78 big muff? Is it like an ac -> dc or can you use some type of physical battery?
Hi Ulysses, it can be powered both with an AC Adapter (tip positive) or a 9V battery.
@@PaulReno thank you
Your‘re welcome!
Great comparison. The muff reissue is great and so is the Rat. Both are my favorite pedals.
Thank you for the positive Feedback! I‘ve yet to get a Rat of my own, as the one I use in my Videos unfortunately doesn‘t belong to me.
Was is a song at 5:00?
Hi Johanne, that‘s an original composition of mine. It’s inspired by Air and Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow.
@@PaulReno sounds nice man, you should release it on bandcamp oder so
Glad you like it! I‘d like to release more, however, time is an issue with my Dayjob and what not.
